Faith - A Tribute To George Michael

Los Angeles

Pride Radio is a dance Top 40 Radio network, targeting listeners in the LGBT community. It is early Friday morning, just past the hour of ten a.m., as listeners around the area of Los Angeles and across the country on the Internet radio, are tuning in as the closing lyrics of Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha's "In the Name of Love" plays across the airwaves...

Would you fall in the name of love?
When there's madness, when there's poison in your head
When the sadness leaves you broken in your bed
I will…

And is soon replaced by...

Delana: That was "In the Name Of Love," as requested by Chris who is listening in Tucson, Arizona. Now, I promised all of our listeners a special surprise, and I am delivering. I have a special guest sitting across from me in the studio as we speak. He's flighty and flamboyant, but above all else, he's fun! And right now, he is competing out of Las Vegas, Nevada for Sin City Wrestling. I am of course speaking of the former World Tag Team Champion, Jamie Dean! Jamie, thanks for stopping by and talking to everybody.

Jamie: Boy, you just had to toss in that 'former' bit there, didn't you?

Delana: How about I amend that and say soon-to-be two-time World Tag Team Champion, Jamie Dean?

Jamie: Better! It might take awhile to get there as my partner, Ben Jordan, and I have other things on our plates that are keeping us busy, but I sure wouldn't be opposed to wearing the gold again.

Delana: And you have been busy, especially outside of the ring. You and Ben Jordan have been working tirelessly for our community, raising funds to help shelter the homeless, especially kids who have a greater risk on the streets.

Jamie: Right, and given how cold the temperatures have been dropping, we wanted to make sure that we got these kids off of the streets ad into a place where they'll be safe. So far ben and I have gotten some churches and community centers to help out, but we've also been working on something bigger and better.

Delana: You're speaking of Oasis? For those listening who may not be aware, Jamie and Ben have worked together ands will be opening a youth center for homeless gay teens right here in the Los Angeles area. When will that be opening, Jamie?

Jamie: Things have been progressing a lot faster than Ben and I could have possibly hoped for. With all repairs and furnishings finished, we'll be ready to officially open in early March, if all goes right.

Delana: Can you fill us in on some of the details of Oasis?

Jamie: Well, you might think of it as a two for one special, courtesy of Ben and myself. On the bottom floor, we're opening what you might call a teen nightclub. A gay club for teens to be able to come to and be themselves and express themselves in a safe and dun environment. No drinking, no drugs. Just soda, snacks and some kick ass dance music.

Delana: And above the club?

Jamie: Above the club is what you might call the 'real' Oasis. We've converted the entire top floor into a shelter, a great big dorm room to house the kids who need a place to stay and to sleep. Twenty to forty percent of the homeless youth population are gay teens, thrown out of their homes because their families can't accept them for who they are. At Oasis, we can and will show them they are worthy. They'll be allowed to stay and watch out for one another, the only condition being they have to continue and complete their education. We want them to have options.

Delana: And that's not the end though, is it?

Jamie: Not by a long shot. Although this stage of things was my personal dream, Ben thinks, and I agree, that we can't discriminate in who we help. So after we finish getting this started, we're going to move on and try to further help the homeless who need it. Straight or gay, youth or adult.

Delana: And Ben Jordan, he's not gay, is he?

Jamie laughs.

Jamie: In a perfect world, but no. Sorry to break the hearts of all his fan boys, but Ben Jordan is the straightest of the straight men. He's just an incredibly open minded and secure man. I've never met a guy like him before. He didn't think twice about bartending at a gay bar for charity, going out on the dance floor when he had a chance, and tonight we're even hitting a club for a special Karaoke night dedicated to George Michael. Ben Jordan is just special. There aren't many men in the world quite like him.

Delana: I'm sure he'd like to think he was completely unique.

Jamie: Ha ha! And I would have to agree.

Delana: Now moving on to your career as a professional wrestling, the business has come a long way when it comes to gays being involved, hasn't it?

Jamie: Oh it has, there's no arguing that point. Behind the scenes, there have been and are closeted gay men and women in wrestling, but it seems over the years more and more have been 'coming out' of the closet and being themselves. It's a huge step.

Delana: Do you credit any of this to any one in particular or take any credit for yourself?

Jamie: Oh no. I came later in the game, pun intended. If I had to say anyone opened the doors, I'd have to say it was Christian Underwood, one of the owners of Sin City Wrestling. Years ago when he first entered the sport, he did so as an openly gay man and was, to my knowledge, the first to do so. He didn't care what others thought of a gay man being a wrestler, he just wanted to prove that it was possible for one to be.

Delana: And he did?

Jamie: Yes he did. Three-time World Champion. World Tag Team Champion. More regional titles than I can count, and now part owner of one of the most successful indy promotions in the country. And now, I think thanks to him in part, being a gay wrestler almost seems to be the 'in' thing these days. Everywhere you look, there's a wrestler that is either a gay man or a lesbian. Hell! Take a look at twitter these days! Lesbians as far as the eye can see!

Delana: Do you really think there are that many gay women in professional wrestling?

Jamie: Well just judging by Twitter, I'd have to guess that it's a sixty to forty ratio. That is, if they're all genuinely gay, that is.

Delana: What do you mean?

Jamie: Well given how popular it seems to be, being a gay professional wrestler, I'd have to think there are at least a few men and women out there who are only acting the part to join in on the craze and gain themselves some much needed publicity. Chris Shipman's been doing it for years, so who knows?

Delana: And if I may ask, how are you treated backstage by your peers?

Jamie: Very well, I have to say, but whether that's because some genuinely don't care that I'm gay or the simple fact that one of our bosses is also a gay man, I couldn't say. Personally, I'm aiming for the former. Nobody would want to get Christian pissed off, and it's not just him. The other owner, Mark Ward, is also a pretty open minded guy who is a damn fierce defender of gay rights. I've never been treated outwardly with any form of disdain until just recently, but the world isn't perfect, so we can't expect everyone in it to be. I've met my very best friends in this business. Amy Marshall and I instantly clicked. Couldn't ask for a more loyal friend than her. Then there's Ben. Top notch guy who I can always depend on, and through him, Sammy Marlowe who is a doll.

Delana: And that recent action you spoke of? It has to do with your upcoming match this weekend and one of your opponents?

Jamie: Pretty much. I and nine other men are in a Battle Royal to see who is going to get to wrestle J2H, the World Champion, for the gold in a few weeks.

Delana: And what exactly is a Battle Royal?

Jamie: It's a match where all the people are in the ring at the same time, and to win you have to throw your opponents out over the top rope and to the floor. Last man standing wins and gets the title shot.

Delana: And it was one of your opponents in this match who hasn't been as open minded as others?

Jamie: That's pretty much it. His name is Xander Bishop and he has a pretty good fan base, but he's risking a lot if he doesn't curb his attitude. Especially the way he was talking down to Ben Jordan who is one of the most popular men in the company. One of the first things Xander brought up was my past at Can-Am and the adult entertainment industry, saying some crude things. The man practically advertises himself as a homophobe in blinking neon lights. He said things like I need to find Jesus, which is awfully ironic considering the man has about as an offensive language barrier as they come. He was calling his opponents the 'N' word left and right. I don't give a damn if he thinks of it as casual slang or not. I'd feel the same if a gay person called me the 'F' word. I won't tolerate that from anyone. If he wants to call me that again, I'll knock the words right out of his mouth.

Delana: How does someone like that rise to being what you call a 'face' in the industry?

Jamie: God knows! It's 2017, not the 1980's! Whenever I hear him talk or read his tweets, I feel like I'm watching a bad edition of Boys N the Hood, not Sin City Wrestling. Next thing you know he'll be strutting around with see-saw shoulders and wearing his pants below his backside. He told me that I had better not try any of those things with him, which speaks volumes on the kind of man he really is.

Delana: And that would be?

Jamie: Insecure. I mean, if he was comfortable with his manhood and masculinity, he wouldn't have anything to fear. Not that he does in the first place. I'd be surprised if he could land a woman, let alone be lucky enough to draw the attention of another man. Given what he said, I feel very comfortable in saying I could get better meat biting my lip. I mean, you have this...

The crowd in AKBAR cheers as a tight backside in even tighter blue jeans shook back and forth, from side to side, to the beat of the music played over the Karaoke sound system. The camera moves up to showcase a stylish black leather jacket on a feminine physique, and turning around, it is revealed to be none other than SCW Hall of Famer, Amy Marshall, on the stage!

Amy: Well I guess it would be nice
If I could touch your body
I know not everybody
Has gotta body like me!

True, the music of George Michael was not really to her taste as she preferred a heavy metal flavor for her ears, but the cause was worthwhile and Jamie Dean was her close friend, so she figured, 'Fuck it! Why not?' And here she is, hamming it up and having fun just like everyone else present! She moved about the stage with microphone in hand, and proved she could carry a tune if need be. It was just a matter of altering her tones from heavy metal to a more R&B style which was much of what George Michael was famous for.

Amy: Baby, I know you're askin' me to stay
Say please, please, please don't go away
'Cause you're givin' me the blues
Maybe, you might mean all the words you say

And everyone present was enjoying her performance, obvious by the cheers and whistles in her direction, from men and women alike! Not to mention the generous tips being gathered by not just Amy herself, but also the drag queens working the crowd, and all going to the charitable cause for the evening! A fact fast becoming the standard for Jamie Dean and Ben Jordan, both of whom were seated at a special VIP table along with Samantha Marlowe, and Jamie's two closest friends outside of the wrestling business; Sandra King and her wife, and Ben's major gay fangirl, Kathy Greene.

The song draws to a close and Amy holds her arms up and smiles, all possible butterflies in the stomach forgotten as everyone, Ben, Jamie and Sam especially, stand up and give their pal and peer a rousing cheer for her successful efforts! Amy hops down from the stage and wades through the men and women, many who offer their congratulations. She arrives at the table she was sharing with friends, new and old, and Jamie wraps his arms around her and lifts her off of the floor.

Jamie: You did it! You did it! You did it!

Amy smiles as she shakes her head in mock disbelief at her own actions.

Amy: And I must have been half drunk to have agreed to do that!

Ben: Not yet doll, but trust me, you'll get there!

So saying, Ben extends his arm and in his hand in a small glass filled with a warm, amber liquid from the bar. Rum! Amy gratefully accepts it with a smile and holds it up, and all present hold up their own and clink glasses before downing the contents in a hearty round of gulps!

Amy: So! Who's next??

She pulls out her chair and spins it around to face the stage, taking a seat on it backwards so she too could now enjoy the show!

And the evening continued as more songs made famous by the late George Michael was performed by fans, from "Father Figure" to "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," and much, much more in between! And it would not be a Jamie Dean promo if the man himself did not get involved, almost dragging the normally shy and reserved Sam Marlowe onto the stage to assist him in performing his personal favorite...

Samantha: Like a warrior that fights
And wins the battle
I know the taste of victory...

One can tell that Miss Marlowe is quite nervous at performing on this stage in front of these people watching her, quite the surprising factor considering she competes in front of thousands of fans inside of a wrestling ring. Perhaps the act of singing was more intimate in nature, one might not be able to tell, but even her closest of friends are surprised admittedly to find that their favorite ginger has a very pleasant singing voice.

Jamie: Somehow I made it through the heartache
Yes I did. I escaped.

Quite the contrast when Jamie is concerned, who did not have a bad voice, per se, but a recording contract is definitely not in the foreseeable future for this flamboyant wrestling Superstar! Still, he is there having fun, and doing it to honor an artist he had been a fan of since his teen years, and someone he at one point saw as a gay idol, someone a man such as himself could look up to with pride and no shame.

Jamie and Samantha Together: When the river was deep I didn't falter
When the mountain was high I still believed
When the valley was low it didn't stop me, no no
I knew you were waiting.
I knew you were waiting for me

And with the cheering support of Ben and Amy, along with Sandra and Kathy and everyone else in support of this charitable cause, Sam eventually loosened up and really put her all into the performance, with Jamie hamming it up while singing as only he might be capable of!

Ben: Here you are, luv!

The Cockney King cheerfully says as he drops an impressive tip into the collection jar from one of the club's many 'hostesses' for the evening, and the song comes to a close to much applause. Jamie and Sam step down from the stage and Sam shyly moves through the throngs of people, while Jamie embraces several of his former work colleagues and faces he knew from his days when he bartended.

Once he arrives at their table, Jamie finds several eyes on him and subdued smiles, and he can not help but automatically defend himself.

Jamie: Hey, I never said that I could sing, now did I?

Sandra: Good thing too, otherwise you would have been struck by lightning.

Everyone, even Jamie himself, laughs at the good natured ribbing in Mister Dean's direction, as a chuckling Ben slides a beer across the table to his friend's waiting hand.

Jamie: Maybe I shouldn't. The drink has already made me sing off key, just in case I want to try again.

Ben arches an eyebrow as Amy and Sam exchange glances.

Ben: Really? That's your excuse?

Jamie nods.

Jamie: And I'm sticking to it!

The laughter at their table is joined in by the general good feeling of the evening while there is a break in the show and songs performed, while waiters make their way around the tables to replenish drinks and freshen things up. One of the hostesses of the show, known in their local circle as the 'Black Cat,' a statuesque diva of a drag queen, steps up to their table in a shimmering black gown lined in silver. She rests her hands on the shoulders of Ben and Sam and looks around the table.

Black Cat: Are we enjoying ourselves tonight?

She is met with words of affirmation from all present, and Ben signals to a passing waiter and looks to the drag queen with his usual charming smile.

Ben: Share a drink with us?

Black Cat: Well my oh my! Aren't you the gentleman?

Ben: Well luv, I've always been taught right how to treat a lady.

The Black Cat looks around the table with an impressed expression, and her look is met with smiles from all around. Jamie reaches over and pats Ben on the shoulder.

Jamie: That's our Ben, charming as ever. I think we'll keep him.

Black Cat: Well I'd love to join you, but I'm on duty right now. Maybe later ... and a body shot?

That offer is met with some cheers and whistles from those at the table as Ben just shakes his head with a smile while he rolls his eyes. And perhaps he has just a faint tinge of pink to his cheeks. Just the body heat from all the people present we can assure you!

Black Cat: So! Anyone else joining in on the fun tonight?

Jamie: Just one!

Jamie twirls a forefinger around in the air and points it right at Ben, the tip of his forefinger right on the muscled sternum of Mister Jordan. Ben smirks and can't help himself as he speaks up,

Ben: If I told you once, Mister Dean, I told you a thousand times: I respond to no man's finger.

Poor Jamie, as he was taking a sip of his beer and immediately started choking as Amy, Kathy and Sandra howled in laughter! Samantha's eyes opened wide as she too laughed, her own cheeks now flushed. Once Ben claps Jamie hard on the back to help clear his air way, the Cockney King addresses his buddy...

Ben: Too right I am, but I believe we had ourselves a deal?

Jamie leans back in his chair with an audible sigh, reaching into the pockets of his skin tight pants and he pulls forth with considerable effort, a check and hands it over to the Black Cat. She accepts it and gives it a casual glance, then does a double take.

Black Cat: Really?

Jamie nods.

Black Cat: But this is for five thousand?

Jamie: I'm aware. It's what it cost for Ben here to put his body on the line!

Ben smiles as only he can as he slowly stands up...

The sultry beat of one of George Michael's biggest (and most controversial) number one hits plays and everyone - literally, EVERYONE -- is on their feet as they dance along with Ben Jordan who is showing to one and all that not only is he fully comfortable in this environment, but he himself has an impressive set of pipes when it comes to belting out a tune.

Ben: There's things that you guess
And things that you know
There's boys you can trust
And girls that you don't

Ben dances along the stage, having no qualms at all at working the crowd with shaking his booty and throwing in a hypnotic grinding of his pelvis, drawing serious positive heat from everyone watching, once again stealing the show!

Jamie looks at Sam in wonder...

Jamie: I don't know if he just hypnotized me with that thing but I'm no longer afraid to fly!

Ben: I want your sex
I want you
I want your sex

Ben rolls up his sleeves in a fluid motion while singing, making certain to flex his impressive arms. Ben then actually hops off the stage, the first of the night to do so, and starts dancing around the tables, working the crowd to get even bigger tips donated for the evening's charity!

Ben: I swear I won't tease you
Won't tell you no lies
I don't need no bible
Just look in my eyes

He turns his back to another table and swings that backside of his, admired by his friend Jamie for so many months, back and forth!

Ben: What's your definition of dirty baby
What do you consider pornography
Don't you know I love you till it hurts me baby
Don't you think it's time you had sex with me

.....

Outside of AKBAR in the cool night air of Los Angeles, the club's door swings open and Ben staggers out, his jeans tussled and shirt torn from his body, exposing his bare upper chest. His eyes are wide and his breathing deep, as if he is trying without much success to catch his breath! Jamie, Amy and Sam are following him outside into the evening, beneath the stars as the evening's proceedings are still going on, the music of the club still going on behind them.

Sam has a concerned look on her lovely face, while Amy is restraining herself from laughing, something Jamie himself is having no success at doing!

Jamie: Are you okay!?

Ben: I guess so but ... *pants* bloody hell! I should have known that might happen! Charity or not, I'm not a damn stripper! I swear if I hadn't gotten away, I'd be nekkid right now for all to see! I never saw anything like it! Hands all over the place and they wouldn't stop!

Sandra and Kathy emerge from the club and walk past the trio, the remains of Ben's shirt in Kathy's own hands.

Kathy: Yeah, my bad!

"Let's get one thing straight -- I'm not."
