All Star Roxi Issue #30: The Horrors (Part 2)
« on: October 30, 2020, 11:54:46 PM »
{Our scene opens with Roxi sitting at her sewing machine, gently pushing material through the machine and pushing down on the foot control steadying her hand. Once goes through and completes, Roxi pulls the small jacket out now with several zippers sewn onto it.}

Roxi – Perfect.

{Roxi stands up and walks to the doorway and calls out.}

Roxi – Nate! Come here baby.

{Withing seconds Nate wanders into the room with a smile on his face.}

Roxi – Come on, we gotta try on your costume.

Nate – Okay.

{Roxi assists Nate is putting on his halloween costume, the “Bad” version of a Michael Jackson costume. Roxi smiles as she watches Nate walk around with it on.}

Roxi – Does it fit okay?

Nate – Uh huh.

Roxi – Okay, that’s good. Later we’ll put some gel in your hair to make you look even cooler.

Nate – Okay.

Roxi – Do you like it?

Nate – Uh huh. Thank you, mommy!

Roxi – Of course, baby. You are my special little man, you know that?

Nate – Uh huh.

Roxi – Do you know where Mama is?

Nate – Uh, she’s downstairs.

Roxi – Okay, have Gramma take you down there to show her how cool you look.

Nate – Okay. Gramma!

{Nate runs off into the living room and runs into Elizabeth}

Nate – Gramma, look at my costume!

Elizabeth – Whoa, that is really cool.

Nate – We need to show Mama!

Elizabeth – Well let’s go!

{Elizabeth walks with Nate to head towards the basement. Roxi turns to the intercom and pushes the button.}

Roxi – Hey, you doing okay down there?

{There is a brief pause before Keira answers, clearly out of breath.}

Keira – Yeah... what’s... what’s up?

Roxi – You're going to have a visitor in a little bit.

Keira – Oh?

Roxi – Yeah, his costume is finished.

Keira – Okay, let me dry off and... oh, there he is now.

Roxi – Let me know what you think.

Keira – You got it.

{Roxi eases off the intercom and sits back down, but only for a moment as her wrist communicator goes off. Roxi reaches over and picks it up to answer.}

Roxi – Vision.

Vision – Hey Rox, so... you remember that weird dismemberment case a few weeks ago?

Roxi – Yeah?

Vision – Looks like the bite marks have a match.

Roxi – Great. So... why the call?

Vision – The marks match that Matt Frank guy.

Roxi – The one who Murphy said was dead?

Vision – Yeah.

Roxi – Spooky.

Vision – Not the word I would use, but I think they’re going to refer to us on this.

Roxi – Now wait a minute, we fight monsters and supervillains, not the undead or ghosts.

Vision – I think this is pretty serious.

Roxi – I'm just saying, I have the number to ghostbusters.

Vision – I think Murphy is going to want to talk to you about it.

Roxi – Alright. I’ll do some research and I will figure out what I can do.

Vision – I'll let him know.

{Roxi ends the call and sits down and begins to think, but after a moment Keira stands in the doorway, towel around her neck.}

Keira – Hey.

Roxi – Hey.

Keira – I saw the custome.

Roxi – What did you think?

Keira – Cute.

Roxi – I'm glad you like it.

Keira – I do.

Roxi – How are feeling otherwise?

Keira – I’m... I’m nervous, I’m scared. I’m over the moon and I’m feeling anxious. I’m a ball of nerves Roxi. I don’t know what to even think anymore.

Roxi – Can only do so much as once, Keira. You just need to calm down and take it one step at a time.

Keira – Roxi, I’m not you. I don’t process things like you do. I have way too many things going on at once. I have two possible world title matches, I have a demon assaulting my family and friends, and Oh, all of this is happening at the same time. It’s the best and worst timing of all time!

Roxi – Well, if you want, I can speak to the higher ups and maybe give you a raincheck on that championship match.

{Keira growls.}

Keira – That’s not funny. I worked long and hard to get this opportunity and you know that!

Roxi – Yes, I do. I’ve watched you work very hard and get better.

Keira – But of course, Sin. Of course, Sin rears her head now! I never should have gotten her extracted.

Roxi – You would rather deal with her inside rather than outside?

Keira – If things weren’t all coming here right now, I could deal with it. But there’s been too much going on and I just... I need a break.

Roxi – And there’s one coming soon.

Keira – I’m not letting Sin get to you. I can’t let Sin do that.

Roxi – Remember what you always told me? That I don’t have to face the world alone? That’s why we have always done things together. Things like this are the reason why we’re a team.

Keira – Rox, I know that. But there’s a huge problem with that. This is MY mess. I have to clean it up. I can’t let you fight this, I mean, you already tried and damn near got yourself killed. I have to be there to protect you. There is no other option.

Roxi – You don’t have to worry about me. I can take care of myself. This is your opportunity. I don’t want you to waste it.

Keira – I won’t. But your safety comes first.

Roxi – Just continue to train and get yourself ready. You have a huge match regardless of what’s directly next

Keira – Just promise me something?

Roxi – Sure. Anything.

Keira – You go to your match, you take care of Mercedes, and you get your ass back to me as soon as possible.

Roxi – I told you before I’m not going to live in fear of what could happen. That’s not a way to go through life. I refuse to let Sin dictate what I can and can’t do. If she comes for me, I will be ready.

Keira – Ready? You were ready last time and look what happened!

Roxi – Keira, I will be fine. I can hold out long enough for you to be there. That’s all that needs to happen. But I’m not going to run away like a scared puppy because of it.

Keira – Stubborn to the end.

Roxi – Likewise.

{Keira sighs and shrugs.}

Keira – Fine. Just be careful, that’s all I ask.

Roxi – And I will be. But anyway, I’ve gotta hit the road.

Keira – What? Where are you going?

Roxi – I need to talk to AJ.

Keira – About?

Roxi – Possible Zombies.

{Keira arches a brow.}

Keira – What?

Roxi – It’s a long story. Just trust me on this. Had to do with the crime scene I was at a while back. I just need to be sure that I’m not dealing with a zombie or a cannibal. Or a cannibal zombie.

 Keira – What in the world are you are talking about? Look, you know what? I don’t even wanna know at this point. You just be careful and if you even feel the wind going in the wrong direction, you better call me.

Roxi – I won’t be long. I promise. If anything happens, I will call you.

Keira – You better.

{Keira and Roxi share a kiss before Roxi heads out to speak with AJ.}

{We are now with Roxi as she knocks on the door to Amy Jo Smyth’s home. It isn’t long before AJ answers.}

Amy Jo Smyth – What's up now?

Roxi – So, I need to talk to you about zombies.

{AJ looks around and motions for Roxi to follow her into the house. She closes the door and locks it behind her.}

Amy Jo Smyth – Okay, level with me Roxi... how much do you know?

Roxi – What are you talking about?

Amy Jo Smyth – You can’t just mention zombies and not know anything. You’re in the super hero business, you must know about zombies!

Roxi – I have yet to fight a zombie if that’s what you’re asking.

{AJ frowns.}

Amy Jo Smyth – Well, that sucks. You got my hopes up for nothing.

Roxi – No, No. I need you to tell me about zombies from a medical standpoint.

Amy Jo Smyth – I am not a medical doctor.

Roxi – But you can research it.

Amy Jo Smyth – Well so can you.

Roxi – AJ, don’t tell me you don’t have medical research on zombies here. I know you.

Amy Jo Smyth – ...

Roxi – Don’t hold out on me.

Amy Jo Smyth – Fine. Fine. Follow me.

{AJ leads Roxi to her basement and into her lab. She pulls out some files from a drawer.}

Amy Jo Smyth – That’s what I got. Zombies are... Well... They're rotting corpses. Decaying, usually after 30 days a normal body starts to really decompose pretty badly.

Roxi – Right, but what about a reanimated corpse?

Amy Jo Smyth – Well, it’s still going to decay. I guess it depends on what we’re talking about. What ARE we talking about anyway?

Roxi – The cops found a dismembered corpse with bite marks and hunks bitten out of it. The teeth marks match someone who is... well... dead.

Amy Jo Smyth – Really? You mean it could actually be a real-life zombie?

Roxi – That’s what I intend to find out, but I just want to know how bad this could get.

Amy Jo Smyth – Again it all depends. There are several possible causes for potential zombie stuff. We could be talking about a virus, we could be talking about a bug that lives inside you, or mad cow disease. There’s a lot of option here.

Roxi – Well, looks like I need more information from the crime scene.

Amy Jo Smyth – Yeah, we get that and I might be able to get you at least a cause.

Roxi – I’ll look into it.

Amy Jo Smyth – By the way, how did it go?

Roxi – What?

Amy Jo Smyth – The bomb.

Roxi – Oh, worked like a charm.

Amy Jo Smyth – Ha! I knew it. She’s pissed, isn’t she?

Roxi – Very.

Amy Jo Smyth – Ha! Awesome.

Roxi – I wouldn’t say it’s awesome, but it worked.

Amy Jo Smyth – Oh don’t let her scare you. She’ll get over it.

Roxi – Somehow, I doubt that.

Amy Jo Smyth – Sooner or later.

Roxi – Yeah, gonna go with later on that one. Much, much later.

Amy Jo Smyth – Well, just relax, and if you need anything like that again, just call.

Roxi – No AJ, I’m gonna handle this one without anything like that.

Amy Jo Smyth – You know what happened the last time you did that.

Roxi – I do, But I learned. I’ll be okay. In the meantime, just don’t... blow yourself up or something.

Amy Jo Smyth – I do what I want.

Roxi – I know. Look, I gotta run, I gotta meet with the Lieutenant.

Amy Jo Smyth – Alright, just see what details you can get.

Roxi – I’ll do what I can.

{Roxi and AJ embrace and Roxi soon departs.}

{Much later, on the roof of the Police HQ, Murphy waits with his cup of coffee and cigarette. Roxi, now in full costume arrives and lands on the roof.}

Roxi – You wanted to see me?

Lieutenant Murphy – You took your time.

Roxi – I said I was going to do some research. Now, the teeth marks?

Lieutenant Murphy – They are a match for Matt Frank, who is dead.

Roxi – Okay, anything else?

Lieutenant Murphy – I’m done with this halloween bullshit. This whole month has been one prank after another.

Roxi – Could it be a mistake?

Lieutenant Murphy – They match Frank’s dental records.

Roxi – So how is that possible?

Lieutenant Murphy – I was hoping you could tell me.

Roxi – Well, without actually seeing Frank’s corpse, how do we know he’s really dead?

Lieutenant Murphy – He died in prison. Coroner’s reports all confirm it. There’s no question about it.

Roxi – I think we need to see a body.

Lieutenant Murphy – Well, Frank’s body was never claimed by relatives. So, in order to do that, we need to go to Texas.

Roxi – Texas?

Lieutenant Murphy – Bodies of prisoners who die in prison are transferred to either Texas, Louisiana, or Mississippi to a prison cemetery. Either that, or they get cremated.

Roxi – Do we know which happened to Frank?

Lieutenant Murphy – Body was transferred to Captain Joe Byrd cemetey in Huntsville, Texas according to records.

Roxi – Then I guess we need to go there.

Lieutenant Murphy – And do what?

Roxi – Dig him up?

Lieutenant Murphy – Ha. You know how much red tape there’d be in that? Digging up graves, especially of prisoners would be highly controversial. And I’m not about to risk my job for that.

Roxi – It’s part of this investigation, Lieutenant. Until we know 100% for sure that Matt Frank is dead then we have to run with the possibility that he is still alive and operating here. It’s the only logical conclusion.

Lieutenant Murphy – They say he’s dead. I believe them.

Roxi – Well, if he’s dead, he’s doing pretty well for himself with the notable handicap.

Lieutenant Murphy – It’s not him.

Roxi – So is someone using his teeth? Is he a zombie? We have to know for sure.

Lieutenant Murphy – Zombies....

Roxi – It is Halloween.

Lieutenant Murphy – Okay, okay, enough. I’ll see what I can do about the grave. We’ll look into it, but no promises.

Roxi – That’s all I ask.

{Roxi turns to leave but turns back.}

Roxi – But, you know I’d... be prepared for zombies either way.

Lieutenant Murphy – Very funny.

Roxi – Talk to you soon Lietenant. Happy Halloween.

{Roxi flies off as the scene fades.}

"If I've learned anything living in Gotham -- it's that only the good stay dead.

-Batman (Detective Comics Vol 1 825)

Hello SCW.

I can’t say as I’m really thrilled with the outcome of my last match. But I knew going in that not only was it going to be tough, but that Crystal was going to be at 100%. But I don’t make the matches, I just go out and try to do my best, and make the most of a troubling situation. I’ll put the blame on myself, I should have done more to help, and I didn’t. I wish at times Crystal thought a lot more about her actions before she acted out, but I can only say so much. I don’t control Crystal so I can’t make her do anything she doesn’t want to do. So, while I know that Amber and I have one more encounter coming very soon, and I will get my Andrea in the ring at some point soon, there were more important things to me coming out the last couple of weeks.

Namely, that Sin is now after me, which is not a surprise. I’ve dealt with scarier things in my time, but this is what I would rather have, then putting off of you in danger. I’m the superhero, so I’m going to handle, like I said before. And while Sin has devastated many of the roster, the fight we have now is bigger than that. And if it’s on my shoulders, then fine. I know Keira feels awful about this and she’s going to make sure she does everything she can to assist in making sure that Sin gets exactly what she deserves.

And speaking of Keira, I am very proud of my wife for the improvements she has made in the face of adversity like this. It’s amazing to think that she is doing all of this, basically feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. And it’s awesome that she is now going to face Alicia Lukas, and possibly for the SCW Bombshell’s title. I have every faith in my wife in doing something amazing each time she’s out there and how much she fought through all the issues and continues to inch closer towards her goal. She never gave up and that’s great. She has proven herself, and now I am in firm belief that she can and will be Bombshell’s champion very soon. And she earned it by beating Mercedes Vargas to boot. Which is exactly the matchup I have this week.

I’ve already spoken at length about Mercedes and how she loves stats and she loves to keep track of things, and that’s all well and good. But you know what’s crazy? Despite all this time that we both have been in SCW racking up wins and championships, we actually have never gone one on one. Sure, we’ve been in tag matches, mixed tag matches. Multi-woman matches and all that fun stuff, but to the best of my knowledge, this is the very first one on one match between us. And we’ve already done the hard part and gotten into the hall of fame and everything. But never once has it just been myself, and Mercedes Vargas. And now, we get to change all that and I am excited for it.

 I mean sure, the challenge of Mercedes is something I’ve looked forward to for a long time, but honestly? I’ve been eager to show that while we possess many of same accolades, there is a vast difference between Mercedes and I.

 It took me years of hard work, battling legends and hall of famers seemingly on a weekly basis to have that singles wins record, which is cool, but not the end all be all. Heck, when I left to raise my son, I didn’t even know I had it. I didn’t know I had the pay-per-view record for a little bit too. And while that’s great and all, it’s not how I define my career. But if you ask Mercedes, it is what’s she’s about. Mercedes will gladly tell you she broke my records, all of them as a matter of fact. Her name is at the top of almost every bombshell’s accomplishments lists and that’s awesome. But at the end of the day, it took me less than a year to just take records back. It didn’t take much to do it, either. It just seems to me that while I was away, Mercedes enjoyed all this success, and it just seems like she was padding stats to inflate her own status.

 Because I asked this once, and I still don’t have an answer. Who is Mercedes Vargas?

I asked this before because I’ve known Mercedes for... going on 10 years now? And I still have not been able been able to answer this question. I searched for a long time to find one definable thing about Mercedes and the most I’ve ever been able to come up with, is that she is a chameleon. She had been able to adapt and just sort of be around and involve herself in a lot of things. It’s always been something that Mercedes has done. She loved to jump on the gravy train to soak up what she can out of the deal. The Mean Girls was a prime example.  You think of Delia, you even think of Veronica Taylor, you had to remember that Mercedes was a part of it. Because, well, it’s just the way it is. It’s an ugly truth but it has to be said.

Plain old Mercedes Vargas, is boring.

I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. Mercedes can try and tell you, me, and everyone else that she’s made a career out of winning titles and all that, but honestly, think about it. What does anyone know about Mercedes, other than she holds various records? She was part of the Mean Girls? She did the... Latina thing with Crystal I think? But everybody knows this wasn’t Mercedes’ idea Not by a long shot. Mercedes has never been the brains of an outfit of stable or anything else. She has been a follower, not a leader. There appears to be nothing about Mercedes personality that is hers either.

Because despite never actually having faced her one on one, I can already tell you that I’m about to hear a lot of super hero jargon. Comic books, the Marvel cinematic universe and the like. Because for some reason, Mercedes has brought this up numerous times to me. I guess to show her geekdom or to be accepted by me or something like that? I’ve never understood it. My only guess at this point is that believes that it gives her some kind of advantage because she “speaks my language” or something. Or that she can relate. Because that’s what Mercedes does. I almost pity someone who has done so much and yet, has so little to call her own.

 I say almost, because I don’t understand the desperation move of attacking Candy. There’s no need for something like that. Mercedes, regardless of what I think about her, or anyone else for that matter, got it done in SCW. She won all the titles, she’s in the hall of fame. What does it say for Mercedes’ standing right now to attack someone as sweet and innocent as Candy? A legend has to attack someone like that? It just reeks of desperation to stay relevant and important. You would think that someone that has done anything close to what Mercedes has done, would be above this. You would think that someone like Mercedes would be far more secure in her own legacy. But sadly, this is where we are now with Mercedes Vargas. A bitter, insecure woman who has lowered herself to attacking the new rising stars like Candy for no real reason outside of jealousy. That’s all I can think that it is. Mercedes should be proud and happy with what she has, but instead Mercedes appears to be worrying about her status and her standing. In this case, she is her own worst enemy.

 Regardless of how Mercedes is doing in the win-loss column right now, nobody can take away her accomplishments. But if Mercedes actually evolved into something rather than rest on her laurels and float along, clinging to 11 or 25 title reigns then we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. I wouldn’t need to be talking about this. Candy didn’t do anything to Mercedes and Mercedes has chosen to attempt to outright bully Candy. And that’s not right at all, and it really should be conduct unbecoming of someone of Vargas’ status.

 So, it makes me more than happy that Candy chose me represent her this week. I’m always ready to help a friend in need and this is no different. Candy is a member of Team Hero after all, and teammates stick together. Friends stick together. And that may explain more about Mercedes than she may want to hear. You can see that no one that has been around Mercedes that long, stays around that long. It seems that friends, much like victories, appear to be abandoning her. Forgive me for piling on here, but you don’t get just to bully one of my friends and get away with it. No, this time, this time Mercedes and everyone else can yell and say I have a hero complex and I need to save the day. I know that Candy is more than capable of winning any match and more than able to beat Mercedes on her own. But this, this match is for me.

 This match is where I take the fight to Mercedes and show her that her actions have consequences. Trust me, if you thought Keira beating up Mercedes was something, you just wait until I step into the ring with Mercedes. Normally this would be a match that while I enjoy, I wouldn’t be out to really go above and beyond to prove a point. But in this instance, I am. Mercedes is going to learn the hard lessons about herself, and about why she is where she is right now. Mercedes Vargas is going to get her ass kicked and I am going to show her what happened when you attack people I care about when you don’t need to.

 I sincerely hope that Mercedes is ready, and yes, I hope that Amber is watching too. I know what lies ahead and I know what’s at stake. If Amber ever needed reassurance that I am ready for her and everything that’s about to go down, I hope she watches what I do to Mercedes Vargas. And for Amber, it will be a sign of things to come.

 I’m going to erase any and all doubts about what I can do on Sunday.

I will see you all there.
