‘Why wouldn’t you be able to trust her?’
Backstage at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York, on the evening of Saturday 23rd December 2017, Lowri Moss is seen sipping from a bottle of water. It is Night Two of Final Frontier, one of the biggest shows in the Frontier Grappling Arts calendar, and ahead of her match later on, Lowri has already changed into her ring attire, which consists of a black two piece outfit with matching knee pads and boots. She is heading back towards the locker room, when she comes across Natalie McKinley, herself an FGA alumnus. Dressed in a pair of light blue jeans and a yellow sleeveless t-shirt, Natalie smiles pleasantly at her compatriot.
Natalie: ‘Hi, Lowri.’
Lowri gives a cursory smile, as she responds in a neutral tone of voice.
Lowri: ‘Hello, Natalie.’
Natalie picks up on Lowri’s matter-of-fact tone, and frowns slightly.
Natalie: ‘Is something the matter? I thought you would be happy to see me, after I agreed to the match with London Underground at Full Circle.’
Lowri: ‘Yeah, sorry, I’ve just got a lot on my mind.’
Natalie: ‘Let me guess - your match with Dom?’
Lowri simply nods. In the penultimate match of the night, she will be in a grudge match against Dom Harter.
Natalie: ‘Well, I was just on my way towards catering, to fetch some ice.’
Now it is Lowri’s turn to frown.
Lowri: ‘What do you need ice for?’
Natalie: ‘For the champagne I brought with me, which we are going to be drinking later to celebrate Molly winning the undisputed title.’
This causes Lowri to raise an eyebrow.
Lowri: ‘Who’s “we’
Natalie gives a nonchalant shrug.
Natalie: ‘Me, Molly, Annie, Do-’
Realising what she was about to say, and who it is that she is talking to, Natalie stops herself from finishing the name of the man who has been tormenting Lowri for the past few months; Lowri smiles despite herself, and nods her head knowingly.
Lowri: ‘That’s what I thought.’
There is a small sigh from Natalie.
Natalie: ‘Look, Lowri, I…’
Her sentence trails off, unsure of what to say next. A brief, awkward silence follows, until Lowri speaks again.
Lowri: ‘I knew that you would be here to support Molly, to cheer her on in the main event - and I’m fine with that. But if you’re going to be spending the night hanging around with her and The New Murder, does that mean you’ll be rooting for Dom rather than me?’
Natalie is somewhat taken aback by Lowri’s question.
Natalie: ‘What?!’
Lowri: ‘I mean, you’re hardly likely to be cheering for me while you’re surrounded by the rest of his crows, are you? I think that would be a bit of a conflict of interest, wouldn’t it?’
Natalie takes a moment to consider Lowri’s statement, before responding.
Natalie: ‘You’re friends with Annie, aren’t you?’
Lowri nods.
Lowri: ‘Yes, like you.’
Natalie: ‘And tell me, who do you think she’ll be rooting for in your match?’
Lowri scoffs at the question.
Lowri: ‘Come off it, Natalie. That’s different, and you know it is. Dom’s her boyfriend; I wouldn’t expect Annie to root for me over him, just like if Molly was my opponent, I wouldn’t be expecting you to root for me over her. But for you to root for Dom over me…’
Natalie interrupts Lowri.
Natalie: ‘I didn’t say that I would be rooting for him.’
Lowri: ‘You didn’t deny it, either.’
Natalie puts her hands on her hips and looks down at the floor, not saying anything.
Lowri: ‘I remember, not that long ago, seeing you repeatedly antagonise Dom on Twitter. But now, because of your relationship with Molly, you and he are what - friends?’
Natalie looks back up at Lowri, with a wry smile on her face.
Natalie: ‘I’m not sure I would go that far. I admit that in the past there were certain tweets I sent to him just to try to push his buttons, but Dom is one of Molly’s best friends, so yeah, I’m trying to be more amicable towards him now.’
Lowri takes a drink from her bottle of water, as Natalie continues.
Natalie: ‘I’m in a difficult situation here. I’ve seen what Dom has done to you and to Neal, and I can completely understand why you would want to get even with him - if I were in your shoes, I would be out for revenge too. But you need to understand that I don’t want to do anything that could potentially mess things up with Molly; I really like her, Lowri, and so if I have to cheer for one of her best friends, in a match in which his opponent just happens to be someone that’s going to be my tag team partner in a few weeks’ time, then I’m sorry, but I guess that’s what I’m going to have to do.’
Another uncomfortable silence follows, with Lowri again being the one to break it.
Lowri: ‘Not that your private life is any of my business, but I seem to recall you saying previously that you weren’t into girls.’
Natalie: ‘Yeah, well, I guess I was just in denial about that.’
This is not much of a revelation to Lowri.
Lowri: ‘I wonder how Molly would react if she found out that you carry a torch for Fujiko.’
Natalie gives Lowri a stern look.
Natalie: ‘You wouldn’t…’
Lowri: ‘Don’t worry, I won’t say anything to Molly about it. She probably wouldn’t want to listen to anything that I had to say anyway, but I’m sure that if she did find out that you have a crush on someone that has been a rival of hers in the not too distant past, then that would go down like a lead balloon, and while I’m not quite sure how to feel about you right now, I don’t want to ruin your relationship with Molly.’
As Lowri sips some of her water, Natalie tucks a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
Natalie: ‘You know, talking about your match with Dom reminds me of a match that I was involved in a couple of years ago, which caused Simon to be torn between rooting for me and rooting for one of my opponents.’
Lowri: ‘Oh yeah? Who was the opponent in question?’
Natalie: ‘Roxi Johnson.’
Lowri: ‘She and Simon are pretty good friends, aren’t they?’
Natalie nods.
Natalie: ‘Yup.’
Lowri: ‘So who did he end up backing, you or Roxi?’
Natalie: ‘Me.’
A self-satisfied smirk then crosses Natalie’s face.
Natalie: ‘And he backed the right horse.’
Lowri: ‘It doesn’t surprise me to hear that Simon knows where his loyalties lie.’
Natalie: ‘What, and you think that I don’t?’
Lowri ponders how best to respond to Natalie, but she decides instead to just dodge the question.
Lowri: ‘Well, I have a match to finish getting ready for - and that ice of yours isn’t going to fetch itself; enjoy your night with your friends in The New Murder.’
Lowri goes to head off towards the locker room, but Natalie grabs her arm, stopping her. She looks Lowri in the eye.
Natalie: ‘I’m not your enemy, Lowri.’
Lowri stares back at her.
Lowri: ‘Maybe not. But I’m not exactly sure that you’re my friend, either.’
Lowri then yanks her arm free from Natalie’s grasp, and as she walks off in the direction of the locker room, the scene switches to inside the living room of the home of Simon Jones, in Cardiff, on the evening of Friday 29th December. Simon can be seen sat on an armchair, wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a grey t-shirt, while Lowri is sat on an adjacent sofa, now dressed in a pair of navy blue jeans and a black hoodie; she repeats the question that she could be heard asking Simon earlier.
Lowri: ‘So, like I said, are you sure that I can trust Natalie?’
Simon takes a moment to think carefully about his answer, before replying.
Simon: ‘I think it would be wise not to judge Natalie by the friends she keeps. In fact, do you remember when I won the SCW tag titles with Ben Jordan, in what turned out to be my final match?’
Lowri nods.
Simon: ‘Ben and I won the titles by beating Tim Staggs and Connor Murphy, two members of The Nobodies. At the time, Natalie was close friends with Celeste North, another one of The Nobodies, but in spite of that, she made it clear she wanted me and Ben to win the match, as she knew how much it would mean to me to win the tag titles.’
With Lowri remaining silent, Simon carries on.
Simon: ‘Similarly, the main reason Natalie accepted this match with London Underground is because she knows how much winning the bombshell tag titles would mean to you. Regardless of what social circle Natalie is currently a part of, when she shows up at Full Circle, I don’t think you’ll need to worry about the possibility of her screwing you over to curry favour with Molly Reid, or whoever else, I think the only thing on her mind will be winning the match, and those titles.’
Lowri thinks over what Simon has said. She then picks up on something.
Lowri: ‘I notice how you said Natalie was friends with Celeste “at the time;†did she burn that bridge, or did Celeste?’
Simon: ‘From what I understand, Natalie did. I don’t know the full details though.’
Lowri resists the temptation to say that does not surprise her. Instead, she asks Simon another question.
Lowri: ‘When you and Ben Jordan won the tag titles, that was about six months after Natalie had cost you the chance to become the first ever three-time SCW Heavyweight Champion, wasn’t it?’
Simon closes his eyes and nods his head.
Lowri: ‘You talked about Natalie knowing how much it meant to you to win the tag titles, as well as her now knowing how much it would mean to me to win the bombshell tag titles, but she also must’ve known how much it would’ve meant to you to make that particular piece of SCW history, and yet she was the one that stopped it from happening.’
As Simon reopens his eyes, he lets out a sigh.
Simon: ‘Natalie would be the first to admit that she has made some bad choices in the past. What she did at Summer XXXTreme III though...she had to do it to pay off her gambling debts.’
Simon then rubs his chin, as something crosses his mind.
Simon: ‘Correct me if I’m wrong, but a few months ago, when SCW announced two battle royals to crown new men’s and women’s tag champions, after both pairs of titles had been vacated, wasn’t Natalie the one that suggested you and her enter yourselves into the match, rather than the other way round?’
Lowri: ‘You are correct, although that was before she started spending time with people who are adversaries of mine.’
Simon: ‘Natalie’s sole reason for suggesting the two of you enter that battle royal was because she wanted to help you win the first title of your career, and while you’ve got your doubts about her at present, I believe she still wants to help you accomplish that. However, I also think there’s now another reason for her to want to defeat London Underground, and win those titles.’
Lowri frowns.
Lowri: ‘What’s that?’
Simon: ‘Actually, it’s to do with something you said prior to the match you had with The Elders. You talked about Natalie having left SCW because she was unable to emulate the success I had there, and from having spoken to her subsequently, there’s definitely some truth to that. Most people in wrestling measure success in championships, and all Natalie has to show for her time in the sport is one reign as the Bombshell Roulette Champion - a reign that lasted just eight weeks.’
Lowri: ‘That’s still one more title than I have to my name.’
Simon: ‘And like I said, Natalie wants to help you change that. She also wants to double her own number of titles though. Whether or not she chooses to continue her career in wrestling beyond Full Circle remains to be seen, but I know she wants to have something else to show for her efforts besides the roulette title, and so she’ll want to beat London Underground almost as much as you do, so that she can get her hands on one half of the tag titles.’
Simon takes a breath, before continuing.
Simon: ‘And as for you, Lowri, I know you’re probably getting sick of hearing this, but you’re going to win plenty of championships in your career - the bombshell tag titles will just be the start.’
That comment brings a broad smile to Lowri’s face.
Lowri: ‘Thanks, Simon.’
Simon: ‘No problem.’
Lowri leans forward, and looks down at the floor.
Lowri: ‘I want to believe I can trust Natalie, and everything you’ve said has given me some reassurance, but I’ve still got these doubts at the back of my mind, because of the people she has been mixing with.’
Simon: ‘I can understand that, Lowri. And that won’t necessarily hinder your chances of winning the titles.’
Lowri lifts her head up, looking towards Simon.
Simon: ‘There’s a bit of a myth that to be a successful tag team, you and your partner need to get on well with one another, but I’ve been in enough tag team matches to know that’s not the case. The two biggest rivals I had during my time in SCW, and possibly during the whole of my career, were Casey Williams and Sean Jackson. They’re also two of the many different tag team partners I had while I was in SCW. Now, I felt the same way about them that you feel about Dom Harter - and I daresay the feeling was mutual. However, when I was forced to team with Sean Jackson, that didn’t prevent me and him from being able to win the match, and as for Casey, he and I almost won the tag titles, about two and a half years before I won them with Ben Jordan.’
Simon edges forward in his chair.
Simon: ‘Lowri, you don’t need to get on with Natalie; you don’t need to like her. You just need to be able to put aside your feelings, and coexist with her for the duration of the match - you do that, and you can win the bombshell tag titles.’
Lowri nods her head.
Lowri: ‘Okay, Simon. I can do that.’
She grins.
Lowri: ‘Because as unsure as I am about Natalie right now, one thing I am sure about, is I want to win those titles.’
And as the conversation between Lowri and Simon then goes on, the scene fades to black.
The scene opens inside Cathays Community Centre in Cardiff, and in particular a once abandoned bingo hall that is now a venue for wrestling. It is the afternoon of Tuesday 9th January, and sat in the the middle of a ring, on a black steel folding chair, is Lowri Moss, who is dressed in a pair of pale blue jeans and a white t-shirt.
Lowri gives the camera a pleasant smile, as she begins to speak.
Lowri: ‘What’s occurring, Sin City Wrestling? Right now you find me sat here within the confines of this squared circle, but on Sunday evening, I’ll be back inside the six-sided ring, for a fourth and final time. After half a dozen years, and more than two hundred shows, it’s still hard to believe that we’re now less than a week away from what will be the last ever SCW show. With Full Circle being the last hurrah, it’s an occasion that could potentially be tinged with some sadness, although with a whopping fifteen matches in store, it seems even more likely that SCW will go out with a bang.’
Her smile broadens slightly.
Lowri: ‘Of those fifteen matches, the one that I’m most interested in is of course the match for the bombshell tag titles, in which Mackenzie Page and Charlotte Elliot of London Underground will be defending their titles against Natalie McKinley and yours truly. Regardless of whether or not I was competing for a championship, I would feel privileged to be a part of SCW’s final show. Ahead of the match that Natalie and I had with The Elders last month, I mentioned that in addition to the promotions I work for full-time, I often make guest appearances elsewhere. Last year I wrestled in nine different promotions, and while it remains to be seen how many promotions I’ll appear in between now and the end of December, given the magnitude of the occasion this Sunday, as well as what’s at stake in the match, I find it hard to imagine that any of the other one-off matches I have this year will be more noteworthy than the one at Full Circle.’
Lowri gently shakes her head.
Lowri: ‘The fact that I’ve never been a permanent member of the SCW roster won’t make Sunday night any less special for me. I’m sure there are plenty of SCW stars, past and present, who would’ve like to have been able to be part of Full Circle, and while I’ve only been in three matches in the six-sided ring before now, that’s still more than a few of the others who’ll be involved in the show on Sunday. My first ever match outside of the UK took place in an SCW ring, and so whatever happens in my career, whatever I go on to achieve, this promotion will always have played a role, however small, in my development as a wrestler. Had things worked out differently, maybe I would’ve been part of SCW on a more regular basis, and maybe I would’ve eventually gone on to compete for the roulette title, or the internet title. That wasn’t to be, but now I find myself with the opportunity to go down in history as one half of the final Bombshell Tag Team Champions, and SCW regular or not, that’s an opportunity that I don’t want to let go to waste.’
The scene then switches to a gym somewhere in Denver, Colorado, on the morning of Thursday 11th January. In amongst all of the free weights, weight machines, and various other exercise machines, Natalie McKinley is seen sat on a flat bench, with her down; she is wearing a pair of black leggings, and a black crop top.
Natalie raises her head, to look at the camera, and then starts to talk.
Natalie: ‘This might be the last time I ever record something like this - it’ll certainly be the last time I record something for SCW - and so I thought, what better setting to use than my natural habitat?’
She quickly glances around at her surroundings, before looking back to the camera.
Natalie: ‘It may be a predictable choice for me, but predictable isn’t always a bad thing. Anyone who knows anything about me, knows how much time I spend in buildings like this. The gym is favourite place to be, and for more than seven years now, it’s where I’ve been every day, working my arse off, sweating and pushing my limits. I’m committed to being the best, or at least trying to be the best - although that’s not something I ever managed to achieve in SCW.’
There is an indifferent shrug from Natalie.
Natalie: ‘During my reign as the Bombshell Roulette Champion - which was now almost three years ago - I spoke about the impact I wanted to make in SCW. I had won one title, but I wanted to go on to have even greater success; I wanted to have a prominent role in the bombshells' division - I wanted the spotlight to be on me. There are a variety of reasons why that never happened, but ultimately the one person that’s responsible for me not reaching the heights that I aspired to get to...is me. Now though, I have another chance - a final chance - to accomplish something in SCW. My on-off relationship with SCW has seen me go through a mixture of ups and downs, and while I never did come close to scaling the highest peak, beating London Underground on the last ever show to win the bombshell tag titles would be a more than satisfying way for me to finish this tale.’
Natalie gives a half-smile.
Natalie: ‘It’s funny to think that having once been banned from SCW for the better part of half a year, I could now be one of their final champions. Mackenzie Page and Charlotte Elliot will have other ideas, but I’m ready to tear them apart to get what I want - and I’m sure Lowri is, too.’
The scene switches back to Lowri, sat in the middle of the wrestling ring in Cardiff.
Lowri: ‘To fully understand my motivation for wanting to win on Sunday, you need to understand what I’ve been through up to this point. For me, this isn’t just any other title match - a win over London Underground would finally bring me the first title of my career. I’ve been wrestling for sixteen months now, but with how much I yearn to be a champion, at times it feels like my wait to win a title has gone on even longer that that.’
Lowri sighs.
Lowri: ‘It was actually fifty-one weeks ago today that I had my first chance to win a championship, when I was one of twenty participants in a battle royal, on a show that took place in Guildford, not all that far from where Mackenzie Page and Charlotte Elliot call home; I made it to the final four, before being eliminated. Two months later I had another shot at the same title, at a show in Camden - even closer to London Underground’s neck of the woods - this time in a triple threat match, but again things didn’t quite go my way. Coming up short in those two matches was easy for me to get over though, as I had only been wrestling for a handful of months, whereas the winner on both occasions was someone much more well travelled and much more experienced than me; it wasn’t until later in the year that the heartache really began.’
She lets out another, heavier sigh.
Lowri: ‘Last June, on the last Saturday of the month, I was part of a seven person ladder match. As the match neared its conclusion, I was at the top of a ladder, battling it out with the then-champion. But just as it looked as though I might be about to win my first title, the ladder was tipped over, and I was sent flying, crashing through two tables at ringside. As much as what happened hurt me physically though, it hurt for even more emotionally. I had told everyone beforehand that I needed to win that match, that I needed to win that championship, but I failed, and for a number of days afterwards, I felt miserable; it would be several days before I got over my feelings of failure.’
Lowri looks down at the canvas momentarily. She then looks back up at the camera, smiles, and continues.
Lowri: ‘In mid-October, I was given another shot at the same title, this time in a one-on-one match. And the match was going my way until, with the referee having been knocked down, someone who has been the bane of my life for the past several months interfered, and gave me a piledriver onto a steel chair; rather than being disappointed, the circumstances of that loss left me feeling angry. I’m determined that come the end of the bombshell tag title match this Sunday, I won’t be experiencing any negative emotions - no anger, no disappointment, only jubilation.’
The scene switches back to the gym, and to Natalie.
Natalie: ‘I’m not exactly in Lowri’s good books at the moment, due to some things that have gone on since this match was agreed to. However, whatever she thinks of me currently, my only intention is to win. She’s having doubts about whether she’ll be able to depend upon me, but I’m not looking to screw her over. I know how much winning those titles would mean to Lowri, and I don’t want to let her down - if anything, the fact that she’s questioning whether or not I’ll be a reliable partner just makes me even more intent on making sure that she and I beat London Underground.’
She gets up from the bench.
Natalie: ‘That two rookies were able to become the Bombshell Tag Team Champions in their debut match says a lot about the state of the tag team division. I’ll give credit where it’s due though to Mackenzie and Charlotte, they still had to go out there and outlast five other teams - it’s not as if they were just handed the belts, they earned them, and since then they’ve been able to hold onto them. But on Sunday, they’ll be up against a duo that’s a bigger threat to their reign as champions than any team they’ve faced so far. That’s not something they don’t already know; they asked for this match because they know how much of a test Lowri and I will provide them with. The thing is though, I’m don’t think it’s a test that they can pass.’
Now Natalie is the one to shake her head.
Natalie: ‘If either Mackenzie or Charlotte were to have a one-on-one match with Lowri, I can say indisputably that Lowri would win. What could possibly stop her from getting her hand raised on Sunday though is if London Underground are able to take advantage of the weak link of the team: me. Because as strong as I am physically, Lowri is the one with all of the talent. However, I am more ruthless than she is, I have more of a killer instinct - something that I’ll admit to having seen from both Mackenzie and Charlotte at times. Lowri plays by the rules, but I stopped being wholesome a while ago, so on Sunday I’ll be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure I don’t let Lowri down, and that she and I win the titles.’
The scene switches back to Lowri.
Lowri: ‘In the relatively short time that I’ve been a professional wrestler, I’ve been through a lot of trials and tribulations; my resolve has been severely tested, but it has only served to make me stronger. A number of people have tried to break my fighting spirit, but they’ve all failed, and while Mackenzie and Charlotte are welcome to try their luck, I can guarantee that they won’t fare any better.’
Lowri stands up.
Lowri: ‘However, I haven’t yet quite managed to win a championship. Instead all I have are stories of near misses, as well as a reputation for not being able to win the matches that matter. I’m confident that I’ll change that though. In fact, I’m going to change it soon, and I plan on starting the change this Sunday, by defeating London Underground.’
Again the scene switches to Natalie, in the gym.
Natalie: ‘My biggest regret from my time in SCW isn’t that I never made it to the level of World Bombshell Champion. No, it’s that after agreeing to be Melody Grace’s tag partner, we then only ever had one match together as a team. Melody was always going to outgrow me, she was bound to be a successful singles wrestler, but I wish that we could’ve competed together as a team in more than just one match. Perhaps we could’ve even gone on to be Tag Team Champions; who knows?’
She gives a shrug.
Natalie: ‘After Sunday though, I’ll be in a position to let go of that regret. There’ll be no wondering about what might have been. Because I have another partner that’s destined to be a star, and together, we’re going to win those tag titles. For the final time in an SCW ring...Mackenzie, Charlotte…’
She takes a deep breath.
Natalie: ‘Nat...will tear you apart...again.’
As Natalie stares confidently at the camera, the scene returns to Lowri.
Lowri: ‘There’s bound to be a lot of buzz on Twitter about the last ever SCW show - I’m sure #FullCircle will be trending on Sunday night. Some people will be boasting about their victories, while others will be reflecting on their losses.’
Lowri takes a few steps forwards, towards the camera.
Lowri: ‘Whenever I go on Twitter, I always seem to see someone bragging about what titles that they’ve won, and with the wait that I’m having to endure for my first title, at best it makes me jealous, and at worst it makes me despondent; it’s time to put a stop to that.’
She takes more steps forwards, so that she is now stood by the ropes.
Lowri: ‘I use the motto “Train, Fight, Win,†but that’s not just something that looks good on a t-shirt - they’re words I live by. I train every day, just like Natalie does, to be the best that I can be. And when I’m in the ring, I fight with everything I have. I know London Underground will being the fight to us, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. We’ll meet them head on; we’ll give as good as we get, and then some. And then, once it’s over, if I decide to tweet about the show, not only will I use #FullCircle, I’ll also be able to use #AndNew.’
And as Lowri leans against the ropes, smiling at the camera, the scene fades to black.
