Endeavor, Part II

The saying goes "Nobody likes surprises."

Not unless they're positive ones.

Not to think that all surprises are positive ones.

But all the same, since Kain and I won the World Mixed Tag Team Championship off of London Underground, we're now facing the similar experience of facing the unknown. Unlike London Underground, we don't have the luxury of the Freebird Rule or playing mind games with our opponents to keep them guessing.

There's only the two of us, and sometines that's more than enough.

Kain and I were kept in the dark on who would be stepping in the ring with us in Irvine two weeks ago. Now, granted, we could have marched down to the office, we could have cornered Christian Underwood and demanded he spill on who our mystery opponents were but that would put us in a bad light, like we were desperate or scared or something, and that would be so unbecoming of a champion. So to wait in that ring with referee Jacob Summers in that moment was tense. Watching the arena lights dim and then hearing Metal Mania's theme hit the PA before seeing Anthrax and Iron Maiden show up was nerve racking. The shocked look on our faces weren't for show, we were terrified. By the start of the match, Anthrax bit Kain; by mid-match I was busted open. Those would be the battle scars we had to live with for the rest of the night.

The last time I saw Anthrax, he was fawning over Sam Marlowe and creeping her out, and the rest of the Metal Maniacs were just along for the ride. Add the fact that Sam feuded with Cadence Carter over the Bombshell Roulette Championship and had to deal with her meddling sister and her boyfriend and one had to wonder how Sam didn't crack right there. Somehow, one thing led to another and Sam not only had to fight for her job but also face her sister and her boyfriend with Antrax as her partner. Somehow, I'm glad Sam got over her nightmare, but who's to say Antrax isn't done with her now that he's back on the roster? Who's to say that Metal Maniacs won't be back terrorizing the roster, or angling for a rematch with Kain and I? I'm getting a little off topic. The important thing here is Metal Maniacs are now in our rearview and now we have to focus on what's ahead.

I suppose I'm getting a little sidetracked from getting to where this should be, our match. I've never been one to overestimate an opponent, even the ones I've had success against, so I would be a fool to think my match will be a walk in the park. It won't be.

First defense this Sunday, but this surprise doesn't seem to bother me that we're facing a lottery team because facing Sam Marlowe and Caleb Storms is a quick study. I can set a plan for them, I know what to expect, and what can happen. So, this surprise isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's another opportunity.

Caleb and Sam made it known last show that they didn't care who they faced in the ring and they would be ready to take them on, and I really hope they are. Kain has a lot to prove since he returned and he's so far lived up to expectations. I wouldn't want to be Caleb right now, much less on Sunday because he's about to step in the ring with a man who can easily kick his ass and enjoy it (Not like that's difficult for any male superstar who's already kicked Caleb's ass in the time he joined the roster). And if he thought the beating he got from Tommy Crimson was bad, it's about to be twice as worse when Kain is picking Caleb's teeth out of his fist. And while Sammi felt she wasn't worthy of being in the Gold Rush after just coming back from injury, I don't think she expected getting a title match in her second match back either. She could have refused this match, maybe have another warm-up match against a marginal talent on the roster or even face a local competitor just to make up for the time she missed while on the sidelines. But, hey, I don't book the matches.

I just win them.

And Sunday I'm three wins away from becoming the winningest wrestler, male or female, in company history. Sammi, we may not be close friends, but I know talent when I see it. As good as you are, it's going to take a lot more to stop this momentum.

I don't care how many people cheer for you. I don't care how many people chant your name or your love for putting smiles on faces. Christian calls you the Girl Scout of SCW, but I'm afraid only one woman is winning this badge, and I'm telling you it won't be you. Some day, one day, you will be champion, but not Sunday. You won't get many chances at this title, so take your best shot, and it better be good.

When it comes to championship matches, I answer the bell, that's when  I'm at my best, and we both know nobody does it better. I'm not letting this opportunity slip through my hands. I'm done pretty well for myself in first defenses and I like to keep that trend going.

Caleb is feeling brave, Sam is determined. Neither is ready for what's about to come this weekend because if they want these titles, Kain and I going to make them earn it. This is going to be fun. Well, fun for us at least. It's going to be a living hell for the both of them.

Just when you thought you have it all figured out...

Surprises happen when you least expect it.

But what good is a surprise when you already know what to expect? What if Sam and Caleb become the World Tag Team Champions?

What if they don't?

"It's mid-August, school is back in session, and I'm looking forward to the last days of summer."

Nothing says the last days of summer than seeing plates full of hot dogs, spiked watermelon, and the occasional lemonade stand. Mercedes is seen playing a late night game of lawn darts. Two teams of two. Mercedes and Irene on one team Hugo and Tomas on the other. Irene raises her hand.

Irma: I couldn't agree with you about that.

Hugo: Why?

Irma: Why? Why not? It's been a cruel summer for me and I'm just ready to turn the page and get back to warm weather for one.

Mercedes: And the other?

Irma: Going back to Mexico. We have production and scrips to go over. I hate it during the summer.

color=teal]Mercedes: Hey, I'm going to call it a night. Another weekend, another title fight.

Mercedes takes her leave, waving back to the others as she heads to her car and drives off, leaving her friends confused.

Hugo: Is there a reason why she always leave just when where about to have a conversation?

Thomas and Irma shrugs as our scene fades.

"Some things are better left unsaid, but you can bet I'm going to say it anyway. I can't help being who I am."

Mercedes walks away from the fairgrounds here at Santa Monica Pier and the camera tracks her now walking along the pier. There's a low tide on the beach west of here as we see several tourist spending a lazy afternoon.

"I could pull a Mikah and complain why this person or that person doesn't deserve a title shot. I could sit here and say that Sam Marlowe and Caleb Storms don't deserve a shot at the World Mixed Tag Team Championship despite Sam just got cleared to wrestle again and she beat a pushover like Portia Alexander who proved to the world that she's a disappointment and carries shame to her last name, and Caleb Storms got blacklisted from challenging for the Roulette Championship because of his mouth. As far as wrestling goes, I'm not sure if he is a clone of Steve Ramone or just Jessie Salco as a man (and a bit more flexible."). Either way, I don't think I can live with myself seeing him carrying these titles because if Caleb Storms is the closest thing to competition Kain has in this match, than the Superstar locker room should be insulted.

"But it's like I said last two weeks ago, Mark and Christian wants to challenge Kain and I, they want us to be ready and at our absolute best against anyone and everyone who wants a shot at our titles. Kain will say his piece about Caleb, but Samantha? I bet it felt so good to actually win again, so here's your applause."

Mercedes claps her hands together slowly and sarcastically.

"After your heartbreaking title loss at Into the Void, I bet it felt even better to see Brittany get hers at Summer XXXtreme, right? Right? Honestly, you should be getting your rightful rematch. Christian can never say no to you. But then, I can never say no to facing you, Samantha, and I think you would probably say the same about me. There's no secret that we have history. You and I have had some incredible matches over the years, and while you've won most of them, it's also true that I've beaten you in two of the three decisive meetings."

Mercedes doesn't even pretend to hide the her singles wins against her opponent. Even though this was a tag match, she hoped that she would pick up her first tag win in her third attempt.

"Still, if competition is what you want, I have no problems with that. I'll be sure to see you on Sunday. Don't come looking for me, I'm coming for you."

Estar preparado para lo peor, esperar lo mejor."
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best."

She pauses for effect, lowering her voice just above a whisper.

"Y que la suerte está siempre en su favor.”
"And may the odds be ever in your favor."
