[Mercedes Vargas sat in the corner of the locker room, her head hung low and fists clenched in frustration. With a deep breath she stares at the floor, replaying each defeat in her mind, especially her latest to Erika Moore in the opening match. The disappointment weighed heavy on her shoulders, the frustration evident in the way she kicked her gym bag across the room. Her resolve was wavering, but deep down she knew this defeat would only fuel her determination to come back stronger.]

"I'm starving. What are you still doing here?"

"I'm solving world hunger. I'm packing my fucking things. What do you think I'm doing?"

[Standing by the door is Ricardo and Irma, who picked up on Mercedes' sarcastic reply. Mercedes continues shoving clothes into her suitcase, not even caring if her friends were waiting on her.]

Ricardo: I don't want to be here longer than I need to be. Could you hurry up?

[Mercedes shuts the suitcase and zips it up before standing up from a kneeling position and shoulders her overnight bag and pulls her rolling tote bag behind her.]

Irma: Another rough night?

Mercedes: You don't miss much, do? What gave it away?

[Mercedes steps towards feints a smile as she fishes through her purse and comes up with the car keys. As she is walking, Mercedes aims her car remote as two brief flashes from the headlights comes from her Porsche.]

Ricardo: Just getting your butt kicked doesn't put anyone in a good mood.

Mercedes: Well, damn, when you put it like that, then I guess I can’t argue.

[Mercedes follows her friends down the orphaned hallways. Even though her match was on the early part of the show, Mercedes stayed until the main event ended. Mercedes steps through the double doors of the arena and into the cool night air.]

Irma: Are you ok?

Mercedes: What did you say?

Irma: Are you ok? You haven't been yourself lately.

Mercedes: No no...I'm fine. I just need to decompress.

[Mercedes, Ricardo and Irma hurriedly enter into the car. Mercedes settled into the driver's seat, adjusting the position of the seat and steering wheel to her liking, Ricardo squeezed into the backseat with a sigh of relief and Irma calmly gets into the passenger seat. The car soon roared to life as they all settled in, ready for their journey ahead.]

Well, that could have gone better.

Actually, now that I think about it, that could have gone much worse.

Another match and yet again I couldn't get the job done. This doesn't make the realization any better, not to mention my mood lately. To be known as someone who can talk the talk, who always come up short, who is always so close and yet so far gets irritating after awhile and people start to lose faith in you that you'll never anount to anything. I'm starting to even question that myself though my foolish pride or ego refuses to let me dwell in on those fears. I'm a two-time Hall of Famer, a two-time Bombshell Champion, the most decorated champion of all time. I've beaten countless Bombshells, past and present, and while 2024 has gotten off to a rocky start, hope springs eternal and it will only be a matter of time, a matter of when, not if, and a matter of who I'll have to go through to get another title opportunity.

And what about Erika Moore? Did she leave an impression on me? She did. I'll give credit where credit is due Now, depending on who you ask, some say her win list week was plain dumb luck. Not to say that she's dumb, or that she won by luck. Others may see that she were there at the right time and place. What do I say? She's still undefeated in only her second match here. Good for her. I hope she enjoys these next three weeks, because I'm telling you now, going against Ariana Angelos at the go-home show and Krystal Wolfe at Blaze of Glory, you know they're bringing their A-game, they're bringing everything they got.

But let's bring this back to where it should be. Now, I know that come the next Climax Control, I'll be in Phoenix, Arizona. I love Phoenix. It's a bit more casual and laid back than other major cities, everything is more approachable than you might expect. They have great Mexican food. There are so many different things you can see and experience. It's hard to be bored. I can do without the triple digit temps, though.

Another reason why I Iove Phoenix? I've lost only once here, at Blaze of Glory. I lost the Bombshell Roulette Championship to Jessie Salco in 2016 and that April day still haunts me. It's a repressed memory.

This year's trip, should be fun. Almost as fun as my match against my next opponent, Georgie Robertson. The current Golden Briefcase holder who hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire. Last week, though? She took out Julianna DiMaria, Bobbie Dahl and Tempest - the top three Bombshell singles champions in the company, the only other undefeated women on the roster in 2024 - in one fell swoop in the main event. The Georgie Robertson I saw last week was a few fries short of a Happy Meal, mentally unstable, an evil, sick, twisted, demented heartless bitch, if I may. If what she did last show wasn't making a statement, I don't know what is.

I also learned Georgie will be at Blaze of Glory. But before she has her triple threat match against Ariana Angelos and Seleana Zdunich at Blaze of Glory, Georgie has a date with me, and I don't think she's going to like this date very much. In fact, I'll make sure of it. I get to put my hands on the girl who tried to make a statement at my expense. And you know what happens when someone makes an example out of me? It lights a fire under me.

So, Georgie, I'm going to leave you with a little word of advice: Don't come looking for me, because I'm waiting for you. Revenge is an act of passion, vengeance is an act of justice. This time, I'm ready for you, mamita. And it's going to be a little bit different than our last meeting because there will be nowhere to run, and no one to help you. When that bell rings, your ass is mine, little girl. Your ass is mine.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. And may the odds be ever in your favor.

[The scene opens on light traffic. Taxis and buses are a blur bypassing a number of neon and LED signs. Carmen seems to be waiting for someone. The camera shifts to one section of the crowd as people start turning around. Mercedes swarms through the crowd and her cousin turns around at the sound of her voice.]

Carmen: I was wondering where you went off to.

Mercedes: Sorry, had to stop to pick up something. So, what did I miss?

Carmen: Well, other than Taylor Swift and that Korean rapper everyone's talking about?

Mercedes: Psy? Gangnam Style?

Carmen: Yeah, that. Not much. You brought grapes. Why?

Mercedes: It's tradition.

Carmen: I don't know if anyone told you this, but we're not in Spain.

Mercedes: I know. I was just hungry.

[Mercedes reaches into her trenchcoat and pulls out the folded piece of paper that was her accomplishments. Carmen pauses from checking something she received on her cellphone.]

Carmen: What's that?

Mercedes: Just my goals for 2024, which I never was able to accomplish.

Carmen: Well, I wouldn't say that.

[Before she knew it, Carmen already had the list in her hand, reading it aloud.]

Carmen: Defeat Bobbie Dahl. Win Bombshell Championship. Audition for host for American Idol?

Mercedes: Well, a girl can dream, right?

Carmen: I don't know about American Idol, but at least you're not selling yourself short like you always do.

[Mercedes snatches the paper away from Carmen, clearly offended.]

Mercedes: I'm always coming up short, but thanks for your concern.While people like Bobbie Williams and Julianna are enjoying their careers, it seems as if mine is at a standstill. My supposed “comeback”, has been anything but these last few years.

Carmen: So what if you weren't able to accomplish everything on your 'to do list, Merce, there's always next year.

Mercedes: Thank you Little Miss Sunshine. Next year can't come soon enough.

Micheltorena Stairs

[REC•]

[Mercedes Vargas pursed her lips together and applies another coat of lipstick. A deep dark shade of red, the perfect complement to her personality – passion, energy, enthusiasm. But not so much these days. Especially these days. The camera peels back just a bit to show us that the SCW Hall of Famer is sat on a flight of stairs that made up the Micheltorena Stairs. The iconic landmark made famous by its bold red hearts and colorful steps, all 177 of them, in fact.]

“Looks like today is shaping up to be another beautiful day.”

[Mercedes turns and speaks directly to the camera, though she has a surprised expression on her face.]

"Is it just me, or is it fair to say that Georgie Robertson has now become the most hated person in SCW? She's got charisma, she's got style, she can outwrestle just about anyone on the roster. Oh, and did you see how she beat the breaks off of Seleana Zdunich last week? Oh my God."

[She pauses for a moment.]

"What am I saying? Georgie Robertson didn't win last week. Mattter of fact, she got embarrassed by someone who hadn't won a match on Climax Control in well over a year and hadn't won in SCW since late November. I bet she's not too happy about that.

"Well, Georgie. Here we are again. Just another random Bombshells match on Climax Control. After a while they start to feel the same. I beat you, it means nothing. You beat me, it adds another defeat to my record. At least you got booked again this week, at least you notch another victory, at least you build a little momentum on your ongoing mission to get another shot at any championship your heart desires so long as you hold that briefcase. Quite a charmed life. And I know Georgie, I know. You're just chompin' at the bit, because, hey, you've got yourself an easy win this weekend against Mercedes Vargas. And why not? You've already beaten me once so far, and I'm starting to think you enjoy these encounters so much that perhaps you'll convince Christian Underwood to have you booked against me every weekend.

"As you get ready for your promo, it's no secret you'll set aside your special time to humiliate me and tell anyone who would listen that it would have been better if I had forfeit our match. If I was a mind reader, you're probably thinking to yourself, 'Yeah, I've got this. It's only Mercedes Vargas, after all. No charisma, no personality, and perhaps the biggest waste of space on the roster. What's the worse that can happen?'

"Let's face it, 2024 has to be the worst year I've had since I debuted in SCW. I've had zero wins in five matches so far and it's certainly something I'm not readily to admit nor am I happy about. But make no mistake about it, Georgie. I'm not some newcomer. I'm not Addisyn Starr or Cynthia Warren. You know that I'm going into our match Sunday and keep up with you from the opening bell until the very end. Competition makes me stronger...and I like to think I play to my strengths.

"Look, Georgie, if you didn't get anything out of my rambling musings, I just want you to know that you are so much better than this, and you can do much better than this.

"What is the worst thing that could happen Forfeiting the match? Lying down so you can get the easy pin on me? No, that's not it. How about getting embarrassed by yours truly? Don't think so? Let's see if lightning strikes again this Sunday, hmm?"

[As our scene opens, we find Mercedes Vargas lounging in the living room of her residence. The television serves as background noise as she is seen lying on the couch listening to a voice on the other end of her cellphone.]

.::MERCEDES::..
Can you believe it? It's been, what, four months, give or take, since I last won a match...It's a good thing I keep myself busy, otherwise I would be on the verge of boredom-induced coma.

[Mercedes reaches for the remote displayed on a coffee table.]

.::MERCEDES::..
No, sos te equivocas, y lo sabés! (You’re wrong, and you know it, too!) I don't plan on losing it anytime soon. Besides, there isn't a single girl on that roster that is on my caliber.

[The door buzzer sounds and she looks up at the intercom.]

.::MERCEDES::..
I'll call you back. Yeah, bye.

[Mercedes ends the call, placing her cellphone on the coffee table. Looking across at her trophy cause causes her to sigh heavily. The thoughts of her most recent title match last week came flooding back in her mind. She planned on walking out of Climax Control with the Bombshell Roulette Championship, but once again had nothing to show for it. At this rate, she could be challenged by just about anyone on the Bombshell roster and it wouldn't have made a difference. Tempest got the best of her. Again.

The door buzzer sounds again, interrupting her thoughts. She puts the replica Bombshell Internet championship back on the table and gets up to answer the intercom.]

MERCEDES::..
Yes? Who is it?

.::DELIVERY DRIVER::..
Delivery for a Mercedes Vargas?

[Mercedes looks confused.]

.::MERCEDES::..
I don't recall sending for any package. You sure you got the right address?

[The delivery person recants the address. The package did match the address.]

.::DELIVERY DRIVER::..
As sure as today is Sunday.

[Mercedes grabs her keys and heads out the door.]

TWO HOURS LATER

“Coming through! Move it or lose it!”

[Mercedes stood with her hands planted at her side watching a moving crew barges through her residence.]

.::MERCEDES::..
Um, can someone explain to me what's going on here?

[One of the movers, pulling a trolley, wipes a gloved hand across his forehead and glanced back at her. He had a heavy New York accent.]

.::MOVER:..
Oh, today is your lucky day, miss. You know how hard it is to get a flat screen up three flights of stairs?

.::MERCEDES::..
No, I can't really say.

Carmen enters the apartment, seeing her cousin. She looks around at the activity, confused as well.

.::MERCEDES::..
Did you have something to do with this?

.:: CARMEN::..
Your guess is as good as mine.

So close, yet so far. Story of my life, I guess. Despite the accolades and the championships and the recognition I've built over the years, it's really starting to take it's toll. An endless cycle of plane trips, hotels, bus rides, the matches themselves...

Maybe I have reached that moment of clarity.

I've been coasting for so long, that I haven't realized that my life had been on autopilot. I've been in this quicksand for so long that the harder I try to fight against it, the deeper it pulls me in, and when I'm looking for something to hold on to - there's nothing to hold on to. Don't mistake this as a sob story, I'm not looking for pity. It's through adversity where you find strength. I'd rather take the road less traveled than the easy way out.

That Bombshell Internet Championship was as good as mine, but Tempest seemingly had other plans, and that other plan was Seleana Zdunich. She took the pinfall, so you can imagine how last week made me feel.

Why am I competing away on Climax Control for the second consecutive weekend? I don't know, I'm not sure, and quite frankly, I don't care. And where I am on the card this weekend is so beneath me. Insulting. A waste of my time and a slap to my face.  I'm not an opening match, I'm certainly not mid-card. I should be seen and not heard. I belong in main events and challenging for championships. But you know what? I'm all but accommodating. I'm going to be the consummate professional only because yours truly gets to face a newcomer to SCW in just her second match.

I don't always face newcomers in SCW, but when I do, it's usually because they're looking to make a statement. Well, credit where it's due, Erika Moore won her debut two weeks ago, albeit against another newcomer, but let's take away her shine. I'm willing to bet the instant our match became official, Erika told all her friends on Twitter and on message boards about her grand victory, and they should be proud of her. It's a great day in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Population: 181,099. (I bet she was prouder that her college team made the NCAA women's basketball tournament).

Now, I know what she's thinking. 'Oh, Mercedes is going to kill me this coming Sunday! What am I going to do? She's going to outclass, outperform, and outsmart me.' Erika's feeling a little intimidated right now, but she shouldn't sweat it. It's perfectly normal. I'm going to give Erika the benefit of the doubt. SCW is looking for the next bright young stars of tomorrow such as Erika Moore and Taylor Sweet to lead them into the future. And I know that day by day she's preparing herself for the match at hand, and she should. We're going to see if she's up for the challenge. We're going to find out a lot of things come Climax Control. This Sunday, she's not swimming with guppies, she's swimming with sharks. Call this her, oh I don't know, trial by fire.

Unlike the training she's got at wrestling school, I'm not going to coddle her, I'm not going to kiss her boo-boo and make it all better, and I most certainly WON'T handle her with kid gloves. Once that bell rings, the gloves come off.

In this company, I've seen a few Bombshells come and go. Most haven't even make it out of their first month. Sadly, more don't even make it after their first match. And knowing that Erika was trained by, let's hope, a good wrestling school, I hope that's not going to be the case with her. No matter what happens, I want her going into Climax Control this weekend at her best. I want her to push yourself harder than she's ever pushed herself before because she's going to need a little bit of luck and a whole lot of talent if she has any plans of walking out with her hand raised and a little bit of momentum on your side ahead of Blaze of Glory. Hopefully, this weekend will be better. If the trip to Stanford, California won’t make it worthwhile, I’m sure my next opponent will. Then again, I've been wrong before.

Except when I'm not.

Congratulations, Erika, you've made the big time. Now here's your chance to take the next step in your career.

You get one shot. Better make it count.

New day, new week, same story. Or maybe I'm living my own Groundhog Day."

[Mercedes is behind the wheel of her convertible, the orange glow reflecting off the side view mirror. She turns down the radio.]

.::MERCEDES::..
You know, while I love quiet time, I'm not much of the silent type. At least say something.

.::CARMEN::..
Sorry, Merce. Let me fill out these last few questions....and done.

[Carmen shuffles paperwork, pins them together with a paperclip, and stores them away in a briefcase.]

.::CARMEN::..
Now, to answer your questions before you think I was ignoring you: Yes; No; UCLA should have won the NCAA Tournament; Probably; UCONN is overrated; I did file my taxes before April 15; I went to church on Easter Sunday; the message wasn't that great; and no, you're life isn't a retelling of Groundhog Day. Truman Show, definitely.

.::MERCEDES::..
Wow. You got all that? I'm impressed. I guess what they say is true.

.::CARMEN::..
What's that?

.::MERCEDES::..
The more things change, the more they stay the same?

.::CARMEN::..
So how was your week?

.::MERCEDES::..
My week?

.::CARMEN::..
Yeah, “Hell Week”. That's what you keep calling it.

.::MERCEDES::..
Right, “hell week.” Well, it certainly was hellish.

.::CARMEN::..
I think we got that part down. Come on, how was it?

.::MERCEDES::..
Nothing this weekend warrior wants to talk about, let's leave it at that.

.::CARMEN::..
It couldn't have been that bad, could it?

.::MERCEDES::..
You try having five matches in six nights, trying to avoid malaria in the Ivory Coast, then having to go to San Antonio and Las Vegas on top of that and see where that gets you.

[While Carmen would not readily admit she was a fan of new wave, there were some scant music choices on thecdial. Blondie, Van Halen, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Carmen reaches for the radio and turns the nob to a rock station as the DJ gives the weather report.]

.::MERCEDES::..
You know, I'm beginning to think this was a bad idea.

.::CARMEN::..
What?

.::MERCEDES::..
I can't believe you talked me into this. I must have been out of my mind.

.::CARMEN::..
You're telling me this after two days on the road and crossing 9 states?

.::MERCEDES::..
Ten states, but who's counting. Did you hear the forecast? An extreme heatwave is across the country, and we had to go through it.

.::CARMEN::..
Well, if you can't stand the heat...

[Mercedes slows down to a crawl, turns down the radio, stop talking and pulls over on the wide shoulder of a deserted road.]

.::CARMEN::..
What's going on?

[She tosses the keys to Carmen.]

.::MERCEDES::..
Drive.

[REC•]

[The scene opens with a birds-eye view of unpaved road somewhere in Bronson Canyon in Los Angeles, California with nary a cloud in the sky. The camera pans across an expanse of clay, inhibited mostly by scorpions, lizards, and tarantulas. At last, through the shimmering heat, a long figure appears. The clip-clop of horse hooves across the dusty trails of a paltry California afternoon. The camera pans up to the rider. Dressed in a simple Reba Wool cowboy hat, blue jeans and a colorful top, Mercedes Vargas sits deep in the saddle and applies pressure with the reins as she comes to a stop. She is standing at the mouth of Bronson Cave, the tunnel entrance best known as the mouth of the Batcave from the 1960s Batman TV series.]

“Well…that was unexpected.”

[She continues on a trail and nearly tramples on a rattlesnake underfoot. When Mercedes reaches out her hand towards the long limbless reptile, it flattens its head and body, vibrating its tail and hissing at her as she slowly doubles back.]

“Okay. That was too close. Never know who you'll run across in these parts. And you know, the same can be said for my match this weekend.'

[Mercedes watches her surprise visitor as it finds shelter among some rocks a few feet away. Mercedes dismounts. With a nervous laugh, she wipes a hand across her forehead and moves on.]

"We're a lot different, Erika Moore, a lot more than you know. I mean, you're from America, I'm from Argentina. You're a country girl at heart with an even bigger heart of gold, I'm very animated at times, but I'm working on overcoming that. You like country music. I usually go for Spanish music. I could go on."

[Mercedes shoulders her backpack and replaces her canteen in its pouch before looking back at the camera.]

"You're still a novice who has yet to know whst winning a championship is like, while I am a multi-time women's champion, which isn't my first rodeo.

"It's a joke.

"Oh, come on, anyone could have seen that one a mile away!"

[Mercedes stops for a moment, taking off her backpack and sets it down on the ground. She takes a sip of water from her canteen to keep herself hydrated from the extreme heat.]

"I'm going to apologize to you, Erika, because no one deserves this, especially you. So, if I hit a little harder than I use to, I hope you can forgive me. If I happen to be more vicious than usual, I hope you can forgive me. There's a good chance you probably won't, but that's okay, too. I'm willing to accept it."

[Her eyes doesn’t meet the camera as she looks down, smiles to herself, then looks up again, her tone needing time to catch to her emotions.]

"I've suffered a lot of defeats, but I keep coming back for more. I know that I haven't been winning lately, but that's what makes this match so important. You get the opportunity to see if you have what it takes to beat a established veteran in SCW. I hope you'll remember to bring your ring gear and bring your A-game. Anything less and I'll make sure this match ends quick so you can make it to bed by ten. Care to prove me wrong?"

[She opens her arms wide in defiance.]

“Erika, I hope you’re ready…because I sure will be. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. And may the odds be ever in your favor. See you Sunday.”

semana del 3 al 10 de marzo de 2024

OK, so things didn't exactly go as planned or as I would have liked at My Bloody Valentine and while I'm a little disappointed, everything happens for a reason, and I'm really starting to believe that. See, it would be easy to say how Bella Madison got lucky, how Bella Madison was the better woman that night, how Bella Madison deserved the win in the elimination chamber match. It would be real easy to say that. Am I saying Bella Madison is better than me? Well, let's not get too carried away here. By no means did I say I was perfect. Everyone has a bad night once in a while, whether you're the most decorated wrestler in the entire company, or someone who is stringing a few wins together. My Bloody Valentine was only a hiccup, a step back. I'll even go on to say it was a setback. It's not the end of the world. Time to dust myself off and get ready to fight another day. I've been dreaming about my next opportunity to right the ship and get that elusive win. Come Sunday, I'm about to show the world why Mercedes Vargas is that...damn...good.

The blurb written about my match had it just about right, but how many people are probably saying that the interactive poll to find Tempest's first challenger was rigged, or that I deserved to be in the running for a potential challenger? Nevermind that Seleana Zdunich somehow found her way into this triple threat because the two fans she has still think she's championship material, but I don't book the matches, so I can't say it's my problem. But you know something? Maybe they're right. They're absolutely right. I don't belong here. I don't belong in this match, and if I had my way, I don't deserve this title match.

I deserve the title.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves. Let's bring this to where it should be. For those of you who missed out on My Bloody Valentine, the pay-per-view certainly lived up to the name. There were high stakes to be wagered, they were feuds to be ended and grudges to be settled, there were titles that were won and lost. You missed out on a pretty good four-way match between Courtney Pierce, Tempest, Luna Pasilno, and Krystal Wolfe. Can't say I didn't expect a title change happening, but that's exactly what happened. That it was Tempest who pinned the champion that night to claim her first singles title, I guess she'll take it. I was taught never to kick a person when they're down, but I never understood why Courtney wasn't particularly liked, whether she was world champion or Bombshell Internet champion. I could have swore I heard a choir singing the Hallelujah Chorus when her reign ended. So sad.

Anyway, Crystal Zdunich awaits the winner at Blaze of Glory whoever walks out of Climax Control with the Bombshell Internet Championship, so there's some pretty big stakes in this match. They say pressure makes diamonds, and that's mostly true. And nobody knows about thriving under pressure or has the uncanny ability for delivering in the clutch than yours truly. I'm not thinking about the bright lights or the thousands of fans in the audience ... The opportunity is there for the taking, so I am fully prepared to see it through. I will make history Sunday.

So what sets me apart from the other two talented women in this match? Resilience. I couldn't care less about Tempest trying to extend her reign because come Sunday, she's going to be in for a rude awakening. Tempest is going to learn the difference between fantasy and reality. The fantasy is she's thinks she's going to hold on to that title another day; the reality is she's leaving Santa Barbara empty handed.

When Seleana Zdunich came to Sin City Wrestling, I don't think anyone thought she would be anything special but throughout that time, throughout her first few months in the company, she was known for being, well, an underachiever. Sure, she became a Bombshell World Champion and she had that run with the Bombshell Roulette Championship, but how many people even remember her reigns aside from the fact that her wife was responsible for those reigns? A fluke world title reign, a Bombshell Roulette reign from three years ago. Seleana has been floundering around the women's division ever since her fifteen minutes of fame with the Bombshell Roulette Championship was over. I bet Seleana is happy about this opportunity. Well, she should be. I know how much this match means to her. Here's her chance to claim the only singles title she has yet to capture in her career, to finally make history. She want this match so bad, she can almost see herself holding up that championship for all to see. That begs the question, does anybody want to see Seleana and Crystal fight for the Bombshell Internet Championship? No? I didn't think so. It's hard to believe this is somebody trying to live to her family lineage and also just so happens to be married to someone who has effortly got her over in SCW, because it's certainly not because she puts on great matches. Me sorprende. It blows my mind.

If anything, Seleana should be lucky to be where she is because in any other company, chances are she wouldn't even be near world championship contention. That seems like it should never have to be said, doesn't make it any less true. I'm sorry that I'm unable to mince words, it's part of my DNA. We love telling lies, but when the truth comes out, it stings a little, doesn't it? The truth tends to stir emotions. The truth causes people to shift around in their seat, it makes their skin crawl. And I know that everytime you're in that ring, that's the verbal responses you get. It's the same reactions you're probably experiencing right now because I will tell nothing but the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God.

This rivalry between Tempest and I have been going on for five years. And for most of that time, I've never had decisively beat her. Singles, tag, multi-woman, it didn't matter. She's had my number in Sin City Wrestling, something I'm not too happy to accept or admit. This is Tempest's maiden defense. Seems to me her luck is about to run out. This Cinderella story was great while it lasted. She might as well get on with making it the best one yet with the few days she has left as champion. Let's face it, Tempest doesn't know what a being singles champion is like. She's been lucky to hang around a few, but she's just a fish out of water. I couldn't care less if what she thinks of my opportunity to adding one more championship to my trophy case and rewriting the record books one more time. If she wants to prevent that, then she knows exactly what to do.

Stop me.

Win at all cost.

Do whatever is necessary in preventing me from having my hand raised as a 15-time champion in SCW and a future two-time Bombshell Internet Champion as if her life depended on it, because it does.

Mercedes Vargas: Bombshell Internet Champion. You know, it does has a nice ring to it. This Sunday, I have a chance to take the next step and claim a championship I haven't held in eight years.

Good things come to those who wait. I've been waiting for too long.

[Carmen and Mercedes are on the side of the street at a fruit stand/market.]

..:: CARMEN::..
You look tired. Rough night?

.::MERCEDES::..
Sometimes I wake up grumpy. Other times I wake up like this.

..:: CARMEN::..
It's a new look for you.

.::MERCEDES::..
If I tried to look as attractive as all of the celebrities I like, I'd end up looking about as ugly as I am.

..:: CARMEN::..
Judgemental much?

[Mecedes stops reading now as she gives Carmen her full attention.]

.::MERCEDES::..
Judgemental, how would you know?

..:: CARMEN::..
I don't really need a hairstylist since my pillow gives me a new hairstyle every morning.

[Carmen reaches across to Mercedes to feel her forehead.]

..:: CARMEN::..
You OK?

.::MERCEDES::..
(swatting her hand away) What? I'm fine. A few bumps and bruises, maybe a mild concussion, and I think I still have a few pieces of my ego lying around here someplace from my last match. Nothing serious, really.

[A man on the street recognizes Carmen. He is disheveled in appearance, but not ragged.]

Man: Hey, Carmen.

..::CARMEN::..
That's Officer Reyes to you, Irvin.

..:: IRVIN::..
 Yeah. Where are my manners? Listen, I'm really...

..:: CARMEN::..
Whatever you're going to ask, the answer is No.

.::MERCEDES::..
That was rude. At least hear what he has to say. Damn.

..:: IRVIN::..
I'm in deep right now, Officer. I’m trying to make my rent.

.::MERCEDES::..
It’s funny how the cost of living is going up but the chance of living is going down.

..:: CARMEN::..
My compassion for people knows no bounds, so it’s gotten me in trouble. I know times are tough, Irvin, but sadly, you’re not the only one.

.::MERCEDES::..
What do you do?

..:: IRVIN::..
Retail. Things have gone downhill with my business. Commission isn't cutting it and I’m left with crumbs. The bills are high and the dollars are few.

.::MERCEDES::..
That's terrible and I feel your pain.

.:: IRVIN::..
Why does it sound sarcastic?

.::MERCEDES::..
It's not. Just take my advice because I’m not going to use it.

[Carmen turns to Mercedes, floored. Without a beat, Mercedes offers her cousin a weakened smile.]

..:: CARMEN::..
I'm going home.

Present Day • Tongva Park
S A N T A M O N I C A, C A L I F O R N I A

[REC•]

[The camera peels back just a bit to show us that the SCW Hall of Famer Mercedes Vargas is at an overview deck at Tongva Park, watching the usual fare of visitors below — kids strolling along happily, folks riding bikes and playing chess, skateboarders trying out the soft-surface of the kiddie park. As of on cue, Mercedes looks up from her folded hands to the camera.]

"So, finally back after another supercard, and not a moment too soon. It's been three weeks since My Bloody Valentine and while I'm thankful for a little R&R, I'm sure most of us who was featured on the first supercard of the year are still trying to get  into the swing of things. The jetlag is real.

"This weekend, I happen to find myself in a triple threat match for the prestigious Bombshell Internet Championship against two opponents that I share a lot of history with and while I hate to say this, familiarity breeds contempt. Over to my left, you have the brand new Bombshell Internet Champion, Tempest, who, while overconfident in her interview with Rocky Mountains this past Climax Control, already claims that she her upcoming title defense well in hand, although she's held the title she now holds for a cup of coffee. Then over to my right, we have "The Cat" Seleana Zdunich, someone who has and continues to be a pain in my neck as she's seemingly has my number over the years. So what can I expect to hear from Seleana? That I don't have a title? Well, I don't see one around her waist either. That it's been two years since my last SCW title reign when I became the first-ever two-time World Mixed Tag Team Champion at Violent Conduct? I'm proud of the fact that I'm not a thirsty title-hungry bitch like her wife. Is it the stats? I like doing my homework."

[Mercedes holds up her hands in reservation.]

"Now, I have long given up on asking why good things happen to those who are just at the right place at the right time, but it is what it is. Tempest has finally reached the promise land with her first ever singles championship, so let's give her her flowers. Good on her."

[Mercedes pauses as she sweeps back her hair from her face.]

"To be fair to Seleana Zdunich - not really sure why I would, but I’m feeling charitable - it's not that she's a capable wrestler in her own right, it's not that I'm looking past her, but even if I gave her the benefit of the doubt, more than likely all she does is prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that she doesn't belong in this title match. I do legitimately feel for her.  And I get it, she wants this to be the big comeback, where she gets up from a very tough six months of lossss. It’s cute, it is.

"Determined, hungry, eager for an opportunity. Seleana gets it here, but I think we both know she is not walking out Bombshell Internet Champion. At Climax Control 387, I'll risk it all to win it all and I'm not heading to Santa Barbara just to lose. Even past my prime, I'm capable of beating any girl on any show in any match at any given time. I'm doing more, saying less. Working hard, playing less. I set the bar that few will ever reach, if they even get that far."

[Looking deadset into the camera lens, her voice drops to a whisper though her words hold conviction behind them. She pauses, mostly for dramatic effect.]

"You know, in the weeks leading up to that battle royal last year at CC 375 back in October, I couldn't help but remember the words Tempest said about our match and, to a lesser extent, me. To hear her tell it, she says I have only on my past to rely on. Well, I'm proud of my past, Tempest. Are you proud of yours, hmm? Are you proud that it took you three years to win your first singles championship. I could just as easily rest on my laurels and simply get by on reputation alone. I'm proud to have an ego and even more proud that I'm the only 14-time champion in history, which I think is a lot more than you have right now.

"No matter what you do, what you say or where you stand, you have never been, and likely never will be, the level of in-ring performer that I am and you will never make the history I have made or will never be as great as me. Period. Full stop. End of story."

[She wears a pained expression and really milks this reaction as her lips pouts while holding a hand to her heart. Maybe sheds a tear or two in there.]

"Since I came to SCW, a lot of people have said they would be the next big thing and turn the company on its head. Rookies, veterans, young, old, upcomers, legends, champions. They're all gone, and I'm still here. A lot of people have tried to put me down, take me out. They're all gone, and I'm still here. A lot of people said that I was all hype and that I wasn't going to last, that I didn't have what it takes to make it here, but you know something? With success comes resentment. Maybe people are writing me off this weekend, maybe people are hoping against hope that your magical run continues past this show. This isn't the first time I've been overlooked in title matches and probably won't be the last. I've learned to get over it. I'm used to the haters and people hung up on my accomplishments and records. I've said this once and I'll say it again. If anything, my records should strive people to be better, not bitter.

"As someone who's been doing this for over a decade, I've got thick skin, mamita. In this business, you kind of have to or you won't survive very long. It's mind over matter and it can be soul-crushing if you allow it to be. It hasn’t stopped me from being the bonafide star I've become, whether some folks feel I'm overrated and undeserving or, well, entitled. I'm living the career most Bombshells only WISHED they had. Proud of it, not ashamed to say it. I've made a name for myself. I've proven that I'm an easy win for nobody and accomplished a lot in so little time. Don't you dare come at me arguing that my ego is how I got to where I am today or trying to reach for low hanging fruit by saying I'm over hyped for my own good."

[Mercedes maintains a calm demeanor in her voice, but you can see the seriousness on her face as well.]

"Blaze of Glory is in 37 days. I'm sure Mark Ward and Christian Underwood will find something for Tempest and Seleana to do, even if it's serving those hungry fans at catering. I'm one match away from becoming a two-time Bombshell Internet Champion and making history one more time. I'm so close to claiming a championship that I haven't held in a long time. I'm not about to phone it in or let anyone believe I'm irrelevant because I'm not holding a briefcase much less a championship, despite what they might say. It was never between me and them anyway.

"They're all gone, but I'm still here."

[Mercedes points at herself.]

"The Mercedes Vargas that was the last woman standing in the first ever Queen for a Day match in SCW. The Mercedes Vargas that went unpinned in her first ten months on the roster, then in singles for a further fourteen months. The Mercedes Vargas that won four titles in a single year alone. The Mercedes Vargas that has made the record book her autobiography. The Mercedes Vargas that has reached milestones, shattered records, and made every woman's life a living hell for over a decade. Is it any wonder why I'm the only surviving member that debuted in 2013? At what point does it stop becoming a surprise when I make history?

"I'm looking forward to giving Tempest the fight of her life and I'll make sure that her first defense will be her last. I can't wait for Climax Control when she's in front of her fans so they can witness for themselves how miserable her life is going to be at the end of the night when she's staring up at the lights and watching me leave the NEW Bombshell Internet Champion.

"The question isn't who's going to let me, it's who's going to stop me?"

It's been one week since the second show of 2024 in SCW. Mercedes is at her cousin's Los Angeles home sitting on the couch and watching television. Carmen has just ended a phone call.

..::CARMEN::..
How did your match go?

.::MERCEDES::..
It was super. I had a title match last week, and I was on fire. I was hitting moves left and right and pulling off feats never seen before. The language barrier was brutal, but, in the end, I stood among my vanquished foes, claiming my victory with a warcry. Ayiyiiyiyiyiyi.

..::CARMEN::..
Lost again, huh?

[Mercedes sighs and hangs her head.]

.::MERCEDES::..
What gave it away? The inflection in my voice, the biting sarcasm, or the overdramatic monologue?

..::CARMEN::..
You can't win them all, Merce.

.::MERCEDES::..
But I try to win most of them. I don't like losing, you know that. I'm a winner. Always has been, always will be. And just because I haven't held a title in a while doesn't change that.

[She stops in mid-sentence, the image of having to relive her string losses still pains her, especially most recently, a title match on national television just made last week intolerable].

..::CARMEN::..
Sometimes, it's not always about winning.

.::MERCEDES::..
Did you think I decided to do this just for fun or collect a paycheck? I don't think so. I didn't spend five years in this business in order to lose. There's a difference between being taken seriously and being viewed as another one of the girls who is only good for rolling around in the ring.

..::CARMEN::..
You say that like it's a bad thing.

.::MERCEDES::..
It IS a bad thing.

..::CARMEN::..
Are you THAT bored?

.::MERCEDES::..
Bored, you say? Hmm, that's a toughie. Yessiree, that's a good one. Gee, let me think it over...

..::CARMEN::..
Ladies and gentlemen, Captain Obvious.

.::MERCEDES::..
I try, I try...

[REC•]

[Our scene fades into a bar as we hear Mercedes Vargas speaking in voiceover.]

"Quite a lively crowd we got tonight."

[We find Mercedes sat by herself at the counter, her head underneath a simple Reba Wool cowboy hat, blue jeans and a tank top.]

"Sightseeing isn't why I'll be in Greeley, Colorado this weekend, though. Far from it. That's not what’s got me upset right now. It's a two-for-one kind of deal on what has me riled up. I noticed that I was scheduled for a match for the second week in a row. I think it’s a good thing, gives you time to pause and reflect. It gives you time to think long and hard after yet another defeat, like what happened to me last week."

[Mercedes offers what she believed to be a sincere smile, thought it's more than likely, well, a 99.9 percent chance that no one would buy it. Nonetheless, there was other matters to discuss.]

"Now I can understand why Georgie Robertson will be upset after she, too, lost just two weeks ago, but let's be honest here, Bella Madison was too good not to lose. Poor Georgie was simply at the wrong place, at the wrong time, so it didn't surprise me why you she came out with the loss. That being said, this weekend, it's Georgie and I. I'm not sure how I really feel about that, but I'm slowly coming along to liking this matchup. I can promise you that our match will be anything but boring. In fact, I expect to have the time of my life."

[Mercedes turns to the bartender on duty as she gets his attention. She articulates using her hands and a few gestures as his slight nod assured her that the message got across.]

"Of course, I can't say the same for Georgie. I mean, really, was that supposed to be the best the reigning Bombshell Golden Briefcase winner can do? Was she really trying out there? Because if she was, then sorry, but this just didn't do it for me. That she had an okay first year in SCW was a given, but there was no excuse for last year. That Georgie has been in SCW for, what, over two years since her debut is amazing. That she has the Golden Briefcase after only being in a handful of matches is the real source of amusement."

[Mercedes pauses as she turns to the counter where a Manhattan ice tea is set before her. She takes it up and takes a sip of it as she faces the camera.]

"Do I care that I came up short in my title match for the Bombshell Championship? Maybe. If Georgie is the best Ive got after that, then I’ve already won."

[She smiles.]

"You know, Georgie, I’m glad SCW sees so much in you, which is why it will bring me so much pleasure of I embarrass you Sunday night. Because no matter how you speak it, British, Spanish, English, Spanglish, there isn’t going to be much of a language barrier as to the outcome, it’s all universal, mamita – you will fall to me and will lose.

I never want to leave here without offering some sage advice, and with that said, here's some advice from yours truly: Get over yourself, Georgie. You haven't exactly set the River Thames on fire, you don't intimidate me, and even on your worst day, you don't intimidate me. So, if I were you, I wouldn't worry about your loss to Bella Madison, I'd worry about what you're up against this weekend.

“But something tells me you won't listen to me, and that's OK, that's fine. My voice will fade, my scars will heal, and time will move on. So, sit back, relax, and get your Kleenex ready. This won't end well for you. You're going to be crying once I'm through with you Sunday night at Climax Control.

“Consider this as another gift to top with a big red bow, courtesy of the Argentine Assassin".

[Mercedes places her hands at her side as a wide grin appears.]

"New year, same me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll be getting my dance on."

[Mercedes makes her way to the dance floor where people line up for square dancing. She skips to a male partner who flies in and they hook arm in arm before he twirls her around, and she finds herself with a new dance partner before the scene cuts to the outside of the bar and our scene fades.]

For well over a decade, Sin City Wrestling has been home to some of the most successful and most memorable legends in history. A who's who of talent that only the most diehard fans can recite from memory. Over time, though, these names have gone on to be celebrated in lore as the best of the best in their craft. Some have gone on to cement their place in the Hall of Fame, others have taken their talents to other promotions on the precipice of SCW providing wrestling on a national and worldwide platform.

The talent in the SCW women's division runs deep. The memories you cherished, the names you remembered. Over the years, in a dizzying turn of events, they were drifting away.  A laundry list of all-time-great gems. Amber Ryan. Mikah. Roxi Johnson. Crystal Zdunich.

The Red Hurricane accomplished what she set out to do in less than three years, with a Hall of Fame induction to boot. The Bombshell everyone loved to hate has since traded in her wrestling boots for sand, surf, sun and enjoying mojitos in Maui these days. SCW's resident Superhero, perhaps one of the greatest in company history, was taking a part-time role after logging in by far one of the longest-active streaks of service. The Rose Queen, c exertainly the greatest in SCW history, has had championship reigns longer than her retirements. Now here she was for another run.

In another world, perhaps there was someone else waiting for their name to get called, the next legend who has defined the Bombshells Division and an era to suddenly get her flowers. Here in SCW, it was hard not to look at who would get that seal of approval and, in that wealth of talented grapplers, let the mind wander to Bombshell Mercedes Vargas and just wonder how much long she'll be a Bombshell.

She checked all the boxes. All-time great? Check. Perhaps the best to ever do it? Check. An ridiculous number of titles and accomplishments to rival her contemporaries? Check? At an age older than her most celebrated rivals —  Check, check, check.

But yet as sure as they were several things that separated Mercedes' career from that of the Ryans and Mikah' and the Johnsons and the Zdunichs of the world, thee were other intangible which made her status wholly different.

Mercedes' legacy remains firmly intact — as does the reputation becoming of her status in the company that, whether said aloud or in silence by the lockerroom, gave her a lot more leeway than most.

Some of this is because Mercedes' perceived excellence isn't just an SCW story. Her time even before she graced the shores of SCW many moons ago only added to it. Experience matters, even for people like Mercedes.

Over her SCW tenure, or at least through her many championships, Mercedes already had it made. That some of the Bombshells she competed in the ring have long since retired or found work elsewhere, it's a testament how she survived this long.  Some Bombshells are spending their golden years in Hawaii. Some, like Mercedes, seem to prefer staying in the ring that's defined her career, the 11 years of it.

Mercedes was not Amber, or Mikah, or Roxi or Crystal. She was not any of the Golden Age Bombshelks like Misty or Vixen. Mercedes' bad yesrs doesn't matter, because, like every new year, there's a sense of hope. Forget her ein-loss record or lack of title wins. All in all, hope springs eternal. And with that Mercedes finding winning again.

The possibilities are endless. She's tasted true success before and there was no reason why she couldn't do it again.

[REC•]

[A gym. Several training equipment of all sorts surround the facility, from the modern to the highly advanced. In the center of the white-washed and wood tiled room is a wrestling/boxing ring.]

[The gym is practically empty, although it’s late in the afternoon. However, one person is actually getting a workout today, and that person happens to be none other than Mercedes Vargas. Today she is wearing a grey t-shirt and black shorts. She is running the ropes as three girls, all of medium stature and height stand around watching.]

[Mercedes bounces off the ropes one last time before putting on the breaks as she turns to the girls.]

"Now THAT is how you run those ropes, people! Alright, let’s see how you do with chain wrestling. Who’s first?

[Lydia, a brunette wearing glasses raises her hand. Mercedes smiles as the bespectacled girl removes her glasses and hand it to the girl on her right. They stay at a safe distance as she and Mercedes circle each other before locking up.]

[Mercedes allows Lydia to get her into a wrist lock, but quickly overtakes her with one of her own and wrenching her arm behind the girl’s back.]

"Not bad, for a rookie…"

Without much effort, Mercedes sends the girl on her back with a modest over the shoulder judo throw, but holds up on the arm as she wrenches it apart.]

"...but surely you can do better."

[Mercedes looks at the camera for the first time now as a smile comes across her face.]

"When you’ve been in Sin City Wrestling for as long as I have you don’t think about losing; when you’ve had the success that I have had, you don’t think about losing. When you know that you've actually made it, you don't think about losing. Now, granted, I’ve had more failures than I have had successes the last few years, there is no hiding that, but in my failures I have learned, and I have been driven, and I have figured out how to be on top in SCW. And whenever, say, Climax Control or pay-per-view, I give it my all, give everything I have, and I still lose, it teaches me something about not only my opponent but about myself."

[Mercedes releases the hold as Lydia is helped up by the Hall of Famer and the second girl, Aisha, comes at her.]

"This Sunday, I could potentially make history and walk out of the second Climax Control event of the new year a five-time Bombshell Roulette Champion, but not only has history not been kind to me in title matches but I'm pretty sure I'll have my work cut for me against the champion Bobbie Dahl and fellow contender Seleana Zdunich. Names I know, abilities I can match and exceed.

“Last year, I lost every title match I took part in. The last one hurt the most. I did the damn thing. I didn’t defeat Julianna, nor did anyone thought I truly put the champ in jeopardy. But I made Jules work for the W. Most Julianna matches are foregone conclusions. That’s partially based on how she's been dominant on her part and the lack of real challengers in the women’s division. It’s different with me; I'm established and can talk the talk and walk the walk. If anything, it’s a victory that Julianna didn’t run through me easily or even at all."

[Mercedes sends Aisha across the ropes and sets her up for a crippling tilt-a-whirl backbreaker followed by a neckbreaker. Obviously, the Double Jeopardy combo.]

"Now, it’s bigger than ever. Different title, different champion, same goal. Because if I don’t succeed, if I don’t win Sunday, then that’s it. Back of the line for me. And who knows? If I don’t beat Bobbie then who will? Who will stop her? The stakes are if I lose I never get to challenge Bobbie for the Bombshell Roulette Championship ever again. That is a title that I have made famous ever since I joined the roster. Almost every Bombshell Hall of Famer have held that title. I have held that title four different times and was the first woman to do that, one more and I am tied for the most, 295 more days and I have held that title the most. And my rivals, the legacy of that championship, means so much. Before Samantha Marlowe became a thing, I was the reason why the Bombshell Roulette Championship became the most prestigious, most relevant title in all SCW and I will continue to make sure that it is the most prestigious and relevant title in all of SCW."

[Finally, Zoe attempts a clothesline but Mercedes Matrix’s out of the way before sending the blonde with a hip toss. She comes at her again before Mercedes collars her with a sleeperhold. She applies it tighter, and Lydia and Aisha stare at Zoe as she began fading before Mercedes gently lays her opponent on the mat.]

"Now, I understand Seleana wants this as bad as I do, that's no mystery. But let’s be honest, the bigger mystery is how Seleana somehow became a part of this match because as far as I'm concerned, she's the same Bombshell who was a literal dumpster fire in 2023 and she probably thought this was a pay-per-view because she couldn't even win one match on Climax Control to save her life. Of course, I didn’t understand a damn word she said as I’m not Swedish, but I’m pretty sure she probably broke the sound barrier every time she lost. Now that her wife is back in SCW and will give her a good pep talk, maybe that Seleana gets an extra dose of motivation.  If I was her, and I’m sooooooo glad I’m NOT, I would call in sick, I would forfeit the match and let me and Bobbie fight for the title. I have a little score to settle with her, and I would love nothing more than to take that massive chip on her shoulder and the gold around her waist."

[Mercedes invites the trainees back in the ring, but the girls were too hesitant to last another round with her. Taking their leave, they all roll out of the ring, backing away towards the rear exit door. With an indifference shrug, Mercedes turns back to the camera, with her hand akimbo.]

"You saw me put on a wrestling clinic just now. Trust me, after Sunday, Bobbie and Seleana will both be in need of a real clinic after I’m through with them.

"Come Sunday, Bobbie, I am not playing. I am doing whatever it takes to bring that title around my waist home. I think it's time I remind you and Seleana why I am that damn good. It's only a matter of time before I add your names on my checklist, courtesy of yours truly, the "Argentine Assassin".

[Mercedes fluffs and straitens out her hair as she leisurely sat on the ring apron.]

"It’s been awhile since I last held the Bombshell Roulette Championship. Whether history is made, delayed, or denied won’t matter. I’ve got nothing to prove and everything to gain."

[She slowly cross her arms<, adding a condescending smirk.]

"So, then, chicadees, the question isn't who's going to let me. It's who's going to stop me."

[Sitting outside on the veranda of a cafe, Mercedes Vargas hides behind a newspaper. She lowers it to reveal her wearing a sunhat to cover her hair. Across from her is Janet the Makeup Lady, a glass still half full of pina colada in her hand.]

Mercedes: It's no use trying to hide my shame. If I had to do this, it had to on my own, just not now.

Janet the Makeup Lady: I think it's a new look for you, get to see how the other half lives. Now, come on, Merce, take off the hat.

[Janet goes to remove the hat, but I swat her hand away and give her a murderous look.]

Mercedes: I'm not going to tell you again. Quit it, or you're going home with one less hand tonight.

Janet the Makeup Lady: It can't be that bad.

Mercedes: I'm too angry right now to go into details at the moment, but that match with Harper should have been mine.

Janet the Makeup Lady: EVERYONE is talking about it. Harper didn't deserve that, if you asked me. She can't seem to catch a break.

Mercedes: Really, Janet. I thought you had my bsck. Just when you know who your friends are.

Janet the Makeup Lady: And what about Jessie talking smack about you?

Mercedes: It's Jessie Salco. When was the last time anyone took anything she said at face value? If I were her, I'd stay retired.

Janet the Makeup Lady: You realize Harper wants to face you at December 2 Dismember? It seems she don't like you. At all.

Mercedes: That hasn't changed.

Janet the Makeup Lady: It's like you and Jessie all over again. Aren't you two ever going to get along? Life is too short to be holding grudges.

Mercedes: Were you watching the same show? You saw what she did to me earlier when Jessie got in my face. Harper got her payback. I got mine. So we're even.

Janet the Makeup Lady: Even though you lost to Harper two weeks ago? I think it's time you let this go, Mercedes. It's not healthy.

Mercedes: What would you know about healthy? Anyway, I got Julianna DiMaria to worry about.

Janet the Makeup Lady: Aren't you excited?

Mercedes: About challenging for the Bombshell Championship again? Yeah. I can't decide between my first go or my 22nd. Seriously, I've been ready and everything.

Janet the Makeup Lady: How good are you?

Mercedes: I don't know, I'm not sure. But it's going to be fun to find out.

[Fade.]

Blog: Almighty Fire
semana del 19 al 26 de noviembre de 2023

So not everything has gone according to plan in 2023. Once again I've lost more matches than I won. I've come up short in a few number one contender matches. At least three times have slipped through my fingers. Getting winds on Control or pay-per-view is another story entirely. The last time I won on Climax Control, I beat Selena Zdunich. That was back in mid-July.

But Thanksgiving is upon us, and it's usually a time to be grateful. I have a lot to be grateful for. When you're a two-time Hall of Famer, how can you not. No matter how much I want to avoid it, time happens to everyone. Yes, even a international superstar like me. I've been in SCW for ten years now and despite what I've accomplished in my career, I've had to weather the storm, rolled through the punches, and watched the endless conga line of girls walk through this company with some not even lasting barely a month. It's a sad reality, but I never let it be my reality.

Something to be grateful for.

Harper Mason should be the most grateful these past few weeks. She got not one, but two wins in back-to-back weeks because of me, and the only reason why she didn't spend the night lying in ICU in some dingy hospital somewhere in Flagstaff, Arizona is by the grace of God and because I'm a nice person. I don't know what her idiot cousin has been telling her, because like the movie Groundhog Day, Harper keeps living the same outcome over and over again. I guess that's life when you're related to Jessie Salco.

Anyway... When I glanced at this weekend's card, I was shocked to find my name in the main event – wait, is that a frown on your face or are you happy to see me? - because there's a lot of girls on the roster who would have killed to be challenging for the Bombshell Championship. A match with one of the upstart talents in the division is an opportunity anyone would and should take. But, hey, I'm not complaining. Depending on who you ask, either I just got lucky or the short end of the straw. A lot of people are probably wondering how I got this match, that I don't belong in this match, and even if by some miracle of miracles I end up having my hand raised, that I don't deserve a title, but you know something? I don't book the matches, so I can't say it's my problem.

I couldn't pass this up, and it's not because my opponent is coming off her first successful defense or that I wasn't successful in my last match outing, but because there needs to be closure, don't you think? Let's face it, save for maybe Courtney, very few woman has been able to give Julianna that challenge in 2023. Week after week, she ended up disappointed after each victory, and every week the fans were left wondering who would end her reign.

I know what I'm in for at Climax Control, another tough match with one of the future stars of the Bombshells division and while we have never met before, Julianna knows I'm going to push her to the limit so I expect this match to be more of a heavyweight fight. I don't have a problem where our match is placed on the card - I just want to be the one who ends Julianna's streak. Honestly, I'm was in no hurry for another title match, but I'm going to make Julianna work to protect her reign.

Julianna has had quite the few months. Being unpinned for five months-plus is impressive – no where near to my 14-month record – but impressive nonetheless, and Courtney was her only real threat. I get the feeling that I won't be the favorite in our match, but that's alright, that's okay. I've gotten used to the underdog label by now, and I've managed to open a few eyes and drop a few jaws along the way. It's what I do. I'm not called “Big Match Mercy” for no reason.

Some people feel I don't deserve to be in this title match to begin with, others see me as a warmup for Julianna before December 2 Dismember and some say I should be desperate ahead of our match because of my history in previous world title matches. I say a world championship reign is long overdue. I've got the ability, I've got the talent and I've got the drive. It's up to me to put it all together and end the night with my hand raised in victory.

There will be those who criticize my career. There will be those who question if I'm ready to be the hood ornament of the women's division again. There will be those who doubt how long I'll stay at the top. And then there will be me ready to prove them wrong.

Like I said, it's Thanksgiving Week, and I have a lot to be thankful for, but come Sunday, you will be thanking me.

"Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.

"Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God."

[Clock ticking. A sewn-in black satin ribbon page marks an opened red-letter bible. A candle burning next to it. Father McCarthy, a bespeckled man who took his devotion serious than anyone had a right to be, recites a passage of Scripture.]

Father McCarthy: Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
    for theirs is the kingdom of hea --

[A proud, pouty tone causes the middle-aged clergyman to look up, annoyed, from the text.]

Mercedes: Father, I need a favor.

Father McCarthy: Yes, my child, what is now?

Mercedes: I have a friend of a friend who knows a friend who is getting married and they need someone to officiate the wedding. Luckily for me, I have the best person for the job.

[The priest sighs while shaking his head.]

Father McCarthy: I'm sorry, Mercedes, but I can't. You'll have to find someone else, I'm afraid.

Mercedes: But why not? You've been doing this for years. Aren't you supposed to be doing the Lord's work?

Father McCarthy: No, I think I would be just doing your work. Besides, I'm stepping away from ordaining weddings and for a good reason.

Mercedes: It can't be that bad.

Father McCarthy: Want to bet?

[FLASHBACK. Texas. Inside a quaint chapel. Father McCarthy dressed in regal attire. He leads the bride and groom in exchanging wedding vows.]

GROOM: Ooh, my little pretty one, my pretty one.
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Ooh, you make my motor run, my motor run.
Got it comin' off of the line, Sharona. Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind. I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind. My, my, my, ay, ah, wooh! M-m-m-my Sharona.

[Father McCarthy gives a bristled response as he turns to the bride.]

Father McCarthy: Now for the bride.

Bride: Um, wow. How can I top The Knacks?

[Flustered, the bride turns to Father McCarthy, who urges her on to continue.]

Bride: Dear Bradley, I promise to be your co-pilot, your navigator, to take you in sickness and in health, regardless of the dangerous stuff I put you through.

Father McCarthy: Wonderful. And at this time, if there is anyone who cannot see why these two should not be in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace.

[The camera pans to the crowd, most of which has their hand raised. Father McCarthy points at one woman in the front row.]

Father McCarthy: Yes, we'll start with you.

Woman: Uh, hi. My name is Tabitha, I'm the bride's roommate. Sharona, you barely know this man. You just met him in the IHop commercial. You two have no compatibility and you yell at each other at most things. Don't make this mistake.

The bride and groom say their peace.

Bride: Tabby, there's nothing wrong with IHOP. Stop being so jelly belly.

Groom: Tabitha, think of it this way. You're not losing a roommate, you're gaining a roommate.

Father McCarthy: Yes, we'll take the woman to the right.

Woman #2: Yes, Ethan. It's your wife, Lola. L-O-L-A. Lola. Real quick, why are you throwing our marriage away? Think of the children.

Groom: Your concerns are noted. Also, the alimony and child support says you have nothing to worry about.

Father McCarthy: There seems to be a line forming in the aisle. Settle down, we'll try to get all of you. Okay, sir in the rather loud suit.

Man: Yes, I'm the father of the bride. I just to say this. Sharona, why are you with this man? Your mother and I didn't approve of this.

Bride: Daddy, don't you DARE ruin this for me!.

Man: Don't say I didn't warn you.

Father McCarthy: Yes, to the gentleman wearing the headset.

Man #2: Ethan, it's Coach Adams. We won the state championship two years in a row. You know you have one more year of eligibility to join the team. What do you say to a three-peat?

Groom: Well, gee, Coach. I don't know how to say this any more clear: Yeah, no. No. Absolutely not. There's no chance. It's gonna be a no from me. A hard no. Definite no. And, uh, how do I say, HELL NO!

Father McCarthy: Well, then. I, too, would like to add my objective. By the power vested in me by the Church, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now seal your vows with a kiss.

[END FLASHBACK]

Mercedes: Oh, you poor thing.

Father McCarthy: I knew I should have taken up acting when I had the chance!

[REC•]

[The scene opens up as we see the hands and partial arms of someone struggling with a tripod. After a few minutes, the person steps back, reaching out to adjust the device before looking back at the camera with a sidelong glance. Mercedes Vargas waves back at us. The Argentine is at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California. In the background is the entrance to Frank Gehry's Santa Monica Place.]

"You know, Jessie,, after Crystal Caldwell took her retirement from Sin City Wrestling all those months ago, I thought for sure you would be following her out the door. You lost your match at Violent Conduct, you lost the Bombshell Roulette Championship. I thought we would never hear or see your face again. But as it turns out, you're still here, plugging along, keeping your head above water in SCW and that's something to be admired. Now you took your cousin under your wing and you've found your voice. On Twitter, you're claiming about injustice being served because poor little Harper has become a punching bag lately. It's just too bad that the last two weeks haven't been memorable, despite the cheap wins she's gotten the past two weeks, but I digress. What I find comical, even hilarious, is the fact that your cousin wants a match with me. Thing is, Jessie, for as long as we’ve been in SCW together and the fact that we've had lengthy careers, I thought you of all people were smarter than this.

"Harper challenged me to a match at December 2 Dismember. She wants my answer? She will have my answer the same time you and the world will - this weekend at Climax Control 379.

"But, see, my attention won't be solely focused on Harper. Because that same weekend, though, I have more important matters worth my time and attention: Julianna DiMaria and the Bombshell Championship. A championship that's been eluding me for awhile now and it's certainly something I'm not readily to admit nor am I happy about."

[Mercedes remains calm, eyes steady on the camera lens. Clearly the shame and embarrassment of the outcome of the tag match two weeks ago hasn't sat well with her. With a heavy sigh, she looks up again, shaking her head.]

"These past few weeks, months, years only serve as setbacks to setup my comeback. I've had my ups and down, successes and failures, but I never let failure get the last word. I plan on walking out of Climax Control as a winner, because that's what I am. No excuses, no exceptions."

[Mercedes looks back at the panoramic view of the Los Angeles skyline before looking back at the camera.]

"I've been called many things. Some of them were nice, others not so much. Depending on who you ask, some call me determined. Most called me obsessed. And then there are those who tend to look at me as being past my prime, including Julianna, and that's fine. If she thinks I'm washed up, that I'm past my prime, I'll be more than happy to prove her wrong and take back my mantle. And if it means going through the new flavor of the week who hasn't tasted a defeat for a over a few months, well, guess who's about to end up on my checklist?

"I've perservered through all kinds of matches and opponents, injuries and setbacks, and the stigma that followed me when I was a member of one of the most infamous stables in the company. It's any wonder why I'm still here after that episode. Disrespect, I can live with. But as for you? For you, Julianna, it's another story. It doesn't matter if I speak to you in English, Spanish, or a mixture of both, it's all universal: You're only getting started.
Oh, sure, you're on en fuego right now. You're stacking up wins right now, taking everyone's best shot."

[She holds a finger in a wait-a-minute gesture.]

"There is just one problem. Every opponent is different, and no week is ever the same. You know the pressure is getting to you. It's why you get me this weekend before the next pay-per-view. Will you still make the card? Probably. Will you still be champion by then? That's what we're going to find out.

"I bet the view looks nice up there, sitting in that ivory tower. What you seem to forget is all it takes is one loss and everything collapses. Come Sunday, I'm going to be the force of nature that's going to cause that tower to crumble.

"Jenga!

"And, when that happens, mamita, the world will be forced to witness everything you worked for disappear just...like...that."

[Mercedes snaps her fingers to underscore each word.]

"There will be those who criticize my career. There will be those who question if I'm ready to be the hood ornament of the women's division again. There will be those who doubt how long I'll stay at the top. And then there will be me ready to prove them wrong."

[Looking deadset into the camera lens, her voice drops to a whisper though her words hold conviction behind them. She pauses, mostly for dramatic effect.]

"Estar preparado para lo peor, esperar lo mejor."
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best."

[Mercedes stares menacing into the camera. She lowers her voice, barely a whisper.]

"Y que la suerte está siempre en su favor."
"And may the odds be ever in your favor."

[With that, Mercedes walks off, but the camera stays on the picturesque view of the boardwalk as our scene fades.]

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

[Open in the backstage area where Ms. Rocky Mountains stands with a microphone in hand next to Mercedes Vargas, who is all smiles after an eventful High Stakes supercard. As the cameras are rolling for this exclusive interview, the Hall of Famer has since changed from her wrestling gear into street clothes, a patterned, pastel coloured crop top with high rise jeans, and is wearing her hair loose, sunglasses rests on top of her head.]

Mercedes: Start the interview, let's go. I've got a plane to catch.

Ms. Rocky Mountains:  Well, alright. Mercedes, tonight you and longtime rival and fellow Hall of Famer Samantha Marlowe put on quite the match at High Stakes right here in Sin City. You get the 1,2,3. No more curse at High Stakes. Finally.

Mercedes: Finally.

Ms. Rocky Mountains: Your first win at this pay-per-view in nine years and third win overall.

[Mercedes performs a victory clasp gesture while Rocky continues.]

Ms. Rocky Mountains: That said, how does this win change your outlook on finishing this year on a positive note?

Mercedes: Surprised, Rocky? Don’t be. You didn’t need a crystal ball to realize that I was going to have my hand raised, it was expected. Samantha gave everything that she had. She still is one of the toughest Bombshells to beat in SCW. But after we put each other through hell, in the end there was always going to be one Hall of Famer left standing.  They say what happens in Vegas stays there. Well, an exception was made. Because what happenned tonight was seen by the entire world.

Ms. Rocky Mountains: I guess the next question I just have to ask is…what's next for you on the cycle leading up to December 2 Dismember?

Mercedes: I don't know, I'm not sure. But it's going to be fun to find out.

[Mercedes rubs her hands together and turns to the camera. She then turns to Rocky.]

Mercedes: We done here?

Ms. Rocky Mountains: Do you have any -

Mercedes: Okay, thanks, bye.

[Smirking, Mercedes spins on her heels and walks off without another word.]

Blog: Almighty Fire
semana del 5 al 11 de noviembre de 2023

The holiday season is just around the corner, but we know better because things really get going by the time Halloween rolls around. Millions of children across the country put on costumes and went out to get free candy and future cavities. That now leaves, well, Thanksgiving. And what does everyone do at this time of year? Stuff their face with turkey while remembering to be thankful for everything in life. I bet those fans in SCW are thankful for the overseas tours we’ve been on this year. I'm sure they're just as thankful for the entertainment after one of the biggest supercard events of the year happened three weeks ago.

Many will say that my victory over Samantha Marlowe was pretty decisive, and I can’t really argue that point. Truth was, I wanted to teach Samantha a lesson she would not soon forget, but I wasn't planning on stopping there. No, no, no. She was just the start. Those lessons I planned for Samantha will be the same lessons that my next opponent will be in for this Sunday. I come to teach Harper Mason a lesson that only I can teach. Because when she steps into my ring, she's no longer in Orlando, Florida. She's no longer in front of her fellow graduates at Hero Academy. She's now in my world. Her cousin has seen me make history again and again over the years. We've shared the ring together side by side, we’ve stood across the ring from each other many times. And if there is one opponent I have no shame in beating over and over again, it would be Jessie Salco.

For Harper, looking past this match would prove fatal. This is no time for her to put the proverbial cart before the horse. Because there was someone more than willing and able to overturn that apple cart. Barring injury, an act of God or being suddenly abducted by aliens, this match will happen. If Harper can pull off another daring escape Sunday night like she did at the High Stakes pay-per-view three weeks ago, then her mission would be complete. Defeat me at Climax Control, and maybe just maybe she will inch closer to achieving success the likes her cousin could only dream of. Fail, and maybe she will have to temper her expectations down a notch. Crossing two months since joining the roster, she might want to take that advice. Because whether before my prime, in my prime, or past my prime, Harper Mason is going to need a little bit of luck and a whole lot of talent to even keep up with me.

If you want a silver lining, Harper has been moderately impressive for a rookie, to say the least. Other than that, losing to Bea Barnhart isn't a bad thing - I've never lost to her in SCW, so I have that going for me - but at some point she's going to need to answer the question as to whether she can event step out of her cousin's shadow.

Come to think of it, maybe she already has.

I know I'm just a cog in the wheel and had I decided to quit today this company will march on with or without me - just as it did when Crystal Caldwell retired for the umpteenth time or when Roxi Johnson finally does - but think about the dark future you would have. Realize that Mercedes Vargas didn't need Sin City Wrestling. Sin City Wrestling needed Mercedes Vargas.

Many people believe that I should have hung up my boots a long time ago, most probably still feel that way now. I wouldn’t be surprised if opponents started sending me Depends in the near future. Harper has it easy. When you're 18, you can vote. When you're 21, you can drink. And when you're 25, you can rent a car. But what do you get for staring down the big 4-0? Harper won't have to worry about that for quite awhile. If life really begins at 30, then I should have had everything figured out close to 40. Everything in life is a trade-off. You give up one thing to get another and you can't have it all.

If there’s one thing I've learned, it’s that I can’t have everything. Focus on a few things really well.

As it turns out, I'm pretty good at this wrestling thing.

Many women have come and gone from SCW over the last decade-plus of my career, but I also know that many have gone before me and here I am standing on all the hard work paved by those that has walked before me.

You're guaranteed nothing. I've won titles and tournaments, received accolades and accomplishments. I thought I knew everything there was about the business despite being less than a decade in, but I'm always reminded of that. I'm not the first to walk this trail, climb this mountain, or witness these views. Someday, one day, when I finally decide to hang up my wrestling boots and look back at my SCW career, I will realize that many will come after me when I'm gone. SCW already has a roster that is capable of leading the company into the future and many new faces has eventually found their way to the here. I'm just hopeful to leave my mark and, just as I'm thankful of those who came before me, the future will be thankful for my accomplishments in due time.

It's never as good as it is and it's never as bad as it seems. That's just how I'm looking at my life. It's kind of helped me out to be where I'm at now. But that's enough for me.

I just ended a five-match losing streak lasting over three months. Before High Stakes, my last win was against Seleana Zdunich, back in mid-July. You know how embarrassing that is?

I’m not saying you don’t have potential. I’m not even saying you don’t have heart. But heart can only take you so far, potential won’t stand a chance against the most dangerous opponent you're going to face right now, and promise isn’t going to save you from your second loss.

I don’t believe in queens and princesses and goddesses. I claim nothing, I prove everything. So, Harper, you start your training camp at Hero Academy, train with your cousin to your little heart’s content, you watch all the tape on me you want and take notes. There will be a pop quiz after. Do whatever it is you have to do, and I promise you you still won’t be prepared for what I do to you.

Come Sunday, don’t come looking for me, mamita, I’ll be waiting for you.

Do your worst, bring your worst. Matter of fact, bring your best, too. Bring everything that you have. Because, little girl, I’m going to hurt you. I’m going to break your body. I’m going to break your spirit. And I’m going to enjoy every moment while I make you cry, and then use your face as a mop to wipe your tears off the canvas. Writing me off before you ever step foot into a ring with me, big mistake.

Question my victories and accomplishments, but never my resolve.

Appraiser: And you have no idea what this armour might be worth?

Woman: Not a clue, my husband bought it at a garage sale. It's a lovely piece. I'd say it's Victorian.

Appraiser: At auction, this would bring in more than eight thousand dollars. You have a winner.

Woman: Yes!

[Mercedes and her friends slips into the ballroom where the appraiser event is taking place at Buffalo Bill's Resort and Casino. Irma wheels in a couple of her art pieces on easels, though the pieces are hidden under cloths at the moment.]

[Back to the opening scene, the woman now gestures at another antique beside her.]

Woman: What about this rocking chair? Is it an original too? My grandfather said it once belonged to Marilyn Manson.

Appraiser: It certainly looks it. The carving looks authentic and so does the inlay....

[The appraiser gives the hairloom a critical eye. The woman is brimming with excitement as she clasps her hands together, now hanging on his every word.]

Appraiser: But I'm sorry to say this chair is a reproduction, worth at best one hundred and fifty dollars.

Woman: Oh, what a shame.

[Mercedes spots a filming crew.]

Ricardo: I didn't know this was being televised. Wasn't on the flyer.

Mercedes: Well, Primm isn't exactly Vegas, so a little exposure isn't a bad thing.

Irma: I'm going to get these appraised.

[Mercedes and Ricardo are looking at an abstract modern painting.]

Ricardo: Did you hear about the guy who removed a banana that was duck taped to a wall at an art museum?

Mercedes: No. That must have been interesting.

Ricardo: Yeah, he did it as a prank, and people got mad. The banana was $120,000.

Mercedes: That's crazy. What is even art anymore?

Ricardo: This isn't your grandmother's Sistel Chapel.

Irma calls to Ricardo and Mercedes]

Irma: Hey, y'all, come over here, they want to put me and my paintings on TV.

Mercedes: I can't appear on TV looking like this. Everyone we know watches this program.

Ricardo: It could be worse.

Irma: So what do you think of that, guys? They said they've never seen anything like it.

Mercedes: Irma, I don't know.

Irma: At this point, I don't care. This is my moment. You only live once, right?"

Director: Everybody ready? Action.

[The director shouts that tape is rolling so Ricardo and Mercedes back off out of view from the camera. A select portrait is on a table in front of the camera. Irma and the appraiser are standing around the table. The portrait shows a moving company moving a set of pictures while a movie crew films it all].

Appraiser: So, Irma, yes?

Irma: Yes.

Appraiser: So, Irma, what brings you here?

[Irma plays to the camera.]

Irma: Well, I heard that there was the convention in town so wanted to take my commissions here for a free appraisal.

Appraiser: And what do you do?

Irma: Oil. Watercolor. Cavern.

Appraiser: Would you like to evaluate your commission?

Irma: That's what I'm here for.

Appraiser: Well, you rarely see these in this condition. For example, the Old World framing, the antique gold finish. Just exquisite.

[Irma calls out to Ricardo and Mercedes.]

Irma: You guys believe this shit?

Appraiser: Ma'am, you can't say that on television. We have advertisers.

[By now, Ricardo and Mercedes, baffled by the findings, have walked into camera view and are standing alongside Irma.]

Irma: Yeah, okay. But what about the painting?

Mercedes: What am we looking at here?

Appraiser: Excuse me, we're talking with Irma.

Mercedes: Hi, my name is Mercedes Vargas.

Appraiser: Mercedes...Vargas. From Sin City Wrestling?

Mercedes: Yes! You know who I am?

Appraiser: Of course! You're a two-time Hall of Famer. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a legend here in Primm, Nevada.

[Mercedes poses for the camera as it zooms in on the Argentine. While Mercedes and the host of the show are chatting it up, Irma is seen seething.

Appraiser: For the people watching at home, what’s the feeling like after a pay-per-view and you’re a winner going after it?

Mercedes: Exhilarating. It's a two week window for most, so you want to get into the next cycle with momentum.

Appraiser: You are a 14-time champion, the most ever in Sin City Wrestling, but you've only been wrestling in SCW for 10 years. What is left for you to accomplish, and what’s on the bucket list of things you still want to do? Have you thought about how much longer you plan to do this? Do you want to be a three-time world champ? What do you see as your future?

Mercedes: I don’t know. I just take it day by day. I feel like I get better every year. I think that says a lot, considering I have done it all, that I’m still not complacent. So in my mind, I still think that I’m going to work hard to create something that people thought was unobtainable. I don’t know what that looks like, but I know it’s out there.

Irma: AHEM! CAN I GET MY APPRAISAL!

Appraiser: My apologies, Irma. I would say if this was to go to auction today, this picture...

[He gives a hard look before making his estimate.]

Appraiser: ...is worth a thousand words.

Irma: Really? Unbelievable.

Appraiser: Thank you so much for bringing it in.

[Mercedes reaches out and strokes the painting like a favorite possession while she and Ricardo smile into the camera.]

Appraiser: And now for some background information on the beautiful city of Primm, Nevada.

Present Day ♦ S A N T A M O N I C A, C A L I F O R N I A

[REC•]

"So I heard that Harper Mason wanted to face me and, well, now she gets her wish. I’m going to look forward to welcoming her to SCW just as Jane McCulligan did in her successful debut. Congratulations, I guess?"

[Open on Mercedes Vargas with a nonchalant shrug of her shoulders. Yes, Harper's debut was two months ago and she's already four matches into her fledging career, but like all newcomers have come to learn here in the Bombshells division, if you wanted to start your career on the right foot, winning your first match was necessary.]

"Poor Harper. I almost feel sorry for her. Almost. I bet she's going to be tossing and turning the night before our match, maybe wake up in a cold sweat and start biting her nails and her mind racing wondering just what in the hell she's got herself into.

"Oh, I know what I’ve got myself into. A golden opportunity to wipe that smirk off her face and knock that ego down to size. Yeah, I know she beat Laura Phoenix at High Stakes. A match between Harper Mason and Mercedes Vargas, though? That would be like asking someone who's played three games of flag football in their life to beat Tom Brady."

[Mercedes stops, smiles, and shakes her head.]

"Don't think I haven't read the details for this match, it's all there. We've got an upstart rookie looking to make a name for herself in the toughest women's division in the world against the most decorated woman in the division, the crème de la crème, The Dynasty of Sin City Wrestling. And what’s funny about that is, Harper, as much as your cousin wants to make you out to be the next sensation, you have a long ways to go.

"Do you feel that, Harper? The anxiety, the butterflies, making a first impression. Having to measure up to your cousin. Living up to the hype you've built up for yourself is going to be a lot tougher than you probably expected. And yet no matter how many times you convince yourself, the butterflies in your stomach never seem to let up, but then this is what you signed up for. The first few months will be telling as to whether you'll stand from the crowd, or just be another face in the crowd."

[Mercedes pauses as she sweeps back her hair from her face.]

"Like I said, I already know what I’m in for. This five foot seven Latina from Buenos Aires, Argentina may not be winning another championship anytime soon and her name may not strike fear in the hearts of opponents anymore, but you best believe that this weekend, you pick the wrong opponent to mess with.

"So, yeah, Harper. Your cousin was right, and you'd do yourself a favor to listen to her. Regardless of how Jessie feels about me, even she knows that I don't play games, I win games."

[The camera pulls back on the lasting image of Mercedes smiling as we fade to black.]

semana del 6 de 13 de agosto de 2023

Violent Conduct is two weeks away. The Queen for a Day participants have been decided. Zoey Lukas, Tempest, Kim Pain, and me. Neither of us got here by accident, we weren't simply just waiting for a handout. Every Bombshell here earned her way into this match, believe it or not, whether you like it or not, and there's not anything anyone can say or do about it.

Of course, my distractors still take the time out from their boring, mundane lives to run my name and reputation through the mud, which, let's face it, is purely because I am everything they’re not and everything they wish they could be and because I'm living the career they only wished they had. To me,  with or without a championship, whether I'm in a pre-show match, the opening match, the mid-card, or the main event, I've proven without a doubt that I'm the most accomplished talent in the women's division. While my competition is still so desperately trying to reach for brass rings, I already have mine, two of them.

OK, so they're not actually brass rings, or made from brass, but my Hall of Fame rings look so much better.

Apparently, I had a match last show, but why even bother mentioning it when my opponent didn't care about the outcome in the week leading up to it? They say you’re only as good as your last match. Well, I'm not defined by one match, or several matches. Because like I've said before and I'll say again, I don’t lose. I win or I learn. Why bring attention to someone that has had just a few good months? Why waste my words on someone who deserves silence?

Out of sight, out of mind. Moving on.

Anyone who has known me, knows that I am too resilient and too tough to stay down for long. So motivation for my match against Tempest this weekend was at an all-time high. That I'm facing a familiar name who has given me a tough challenge in the past is always a match you get up for

That said, the history between Tempest and I isn't very long, but it did have its moments, particularly the time where Goth and I beat Tempest and Austin James Mercer for the World Mixed Tag Team Championship It's true that they won the first round, but Goth and I got our sweet revenge, so there's that.

However, the first time Tempest and I met, one-on-one, she beat me. She won. Haven't exactly gotten over that, but good things come to those who wait. So, with all apologies to a 90s song I heard the other day: it has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime. What better place than here? What better time than now?

I remember when Tempest first made her debut in SCW. That she had to face her fellow GO Gym Graduate, Krystal Wolfe was ironic to say the least, but Tempest won that match, and pretty convincingly, I might add.

Most opponents who stand in Tempest's way don't stand a chance, much less have a prayer. In her eyes, they're not even an opponent. They're a ragdoll, a chew toy, a sacrifice, a simple act of charity given by SCW.

What I find funny is that in the more than two years since Tempest's Christmas night debut, her only claim to fame is that tag title run. No doubt she could go on a long singles title reign, but something seems to be missing. Since losing the World Mixed Tag Team Championship, what exactly has Tempest done since in her career? She should have won the Bombshell Internet Championship in that battle royal instead of Kayla Richards last year. She and Austin had to be the favorites in the four-way mixed tag World Mixed Tag Team Championship match at Summer XXXTreme this year. You know, maybe, just maybe, Tempest isn't the threat she claims to be. Maybe she's destined to be a tag team wrestler forever and only trotted out for special occasions like some kind of pandering show pony or a rodeo clown.

She's lost only three times in singles matches, which in and of itself, is impressive. She beat Alexandra Calaway in her last match. Impressive, yes, but sometimes it's not about the opponents you beat, but the opponents who beat you. And the three opponents who own a victory over Tempest are the last people I wouldn't even give the time of day: Bella Madison, Bobbie Dahl, and Seleana Zdunich.

Oof.

Did I say that out loud?

Sorry, not sorry.

Tempest has had her way with a lot of her opponents in SCW, yet very few have really challenged her, and I like to believe I'm one of them. With Tempest, she's expecting to see fear and desperation in my eyes, and there should be. But that's not what she's getting. No, behind these eyes, mamita, is anticipation. Behind these eyes are little flames dancing in excitement because now I get an opportunity to wipe that smirk off your face before I crush your dreams two weeks later when I climb that ladder, rung by rung, and claim that Queen for a Day contract. You, Zoey, and Kim will witness history while I make history one more time. I mean, at this point, Tempest, this should be nothing for you because two years ago in late November 2020, I became a record three-time World Mixed Tag Team Champion.

I like Rio, I love Rio, but there's a time for business and pleasure, and I'm going to have both this weekend.

Sunday can't come soon enough. I'm waiting with baited breath for the moment I get the opportunity to step in the ring with you and finally add your name to my checklist.

Revenge is an act of passion, vengeance is an act of justice. And while they say good things come to those who wait, something tells me Tempest isn't going to like what's coming to her.

As a matter of fact, I guarantee it.

FLASHBACK || RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL || SUNDAY, JULY 28, 2013

[Mercedes Vargas buries her face in her hands and sighs deeply, sitting in her hotel room, reflecting on what happened to her moments ago.

Some would call it a tragedy. Others would call it a case of simple bad luck. But she knew better. She knew a lot better to know what this really was. It had to have been an hour or so after the show ended.

Mercedes: All I wanted was to go out. Is that too much to ask?

[Even if the plan was to sit inside a warm, dry bar, she didn't expect her newfound friends to postpone for another day. Well, rain seems to be an occurrence here in Brazil, so this was normal. At least this is what her roommate tells her.]

Roommate: Are you listening to yourself right now?

«She sits on the bed next to Mercedes. She gets up and moves away, turning her back towards him.»

Mercedes: Sorry, it's just that I hate being cooped up in my room all day. It's been raining all day.

[She turns around and faces him.]

Mercedes: This was supposed to be My TIME. MY MOMENT. AND IT WAS ALL TAKEN AWAY FROM ME! DAMN MOTHER NATURE!!

Mercedes failure to compose herself doesn't end well as her roommate slowly stands to his feet, shaking his head.»

Roommate: I told you this would happen, you didn't believe me. Now you see for yourself. Are you going to be okay?

Mercedes: Yeah, I guess so.

Roommate: If we hurry now, we just might catch the last flight out of the country.

Mercedes: I'll be down in five minutes. I just need to be alone right now.

Roommate: Take your time.

[The roommate walks out of the leaves before he stops and turns back to Mercedes.]

Roommate: I'll be downstairs.

Mercedes: Just go!

Present Day ♦ RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

[REC•]

"Another week in South America? What did I do to deserve this kindness?"

[Open on Mercedes Vargas at a juice bar in Rio, which is common in this city. Dressed in a red dress and high heels, her brunette hair into a tumble of soft curls.]

"Beautiful people, breathtaking scenery, vibrant nightlife. What's not to love about Brazil, especially Rio? When they said this month would have a lot of tourists here, they weren't joking. You know how long it took me to find a place to get some peace and quiet?

"Anyway..."

[She takes a sip from her half-full glass, puts it down on the counter.]

"Wow! This papaya drink is amazing!

Anyway, my match last week in Peru didn't exactly work out how I wanted to, but that's okay. New week, new city, new opponent, same goal: to win. With Violent Conduct just around the corner, momentum is important, but little did I know that my opponent is one I'll be seeing again in two weeks. Oh, and did I mention this is a Throw in the Towel match? I didn't? Well it bears repeating: A Throw in the Towel match. Which means it's an I Quit match. Well, this sure wasn't on my bingo card for 2023?"

[Mercedes offers a side eye roll.]

"Well, if you've been following my career in Sin City Wrestling for the past ten years, you know that I have never backed down from a challenge yet, and I don't quit. Ever. I've survived and thrived and rolled through the punches in SCW, even when things weren't so great. I've  survived Bombshells trying to end my career, I've had mealy mouth bitches serve up put downs and disses and throwing negativity my way for most of my career."

[She pauses for a second.]

"It didn't work then, it didn't work now. Tempest, you know better than anyone that I'm a fighter, because that's who I am. How did you think I got where I am in my career? The only way you're going to get Kim to throw in the towel is in your wildest dreams.

"Come this Sunday, I'm going to be the reality staring you in the face at the go-home show. And the reason Zoey throws in the towel on your behalf isn't to stop the match, it's to save you from me!"

[Mercedes points at herself before she gives an intimidating look at the camera.]

"See you Sunday!"

semana del 30 de julio al 7 de agosto de 2023

I know I have a match this weekend, but I got a lot on my mind after the last show so if I start rambling, well, I could give two shits whether you like it or not.

After the last show in whatever city we were in - Sorry, I'm a little fuzzy on the details. I guess, apparently, that superkick from Georgie Robertson must have been more devastating than I thought - I was on the hunt. If it wasn't for the security, referees, and personnel holding me back from reaching the Bombshells lockerroom, I'm pretty sure I would be going to jail that night. And if Ms. Rocky Mountains wasn't being the annoying April O'Neal she usually is, she would be the first casualty.

One thing is for sure, two things are for certain. The only reason why Georgie girl gets to live and tell the story is by the grace of God and because I'm a nice person. Maybe not all the time, but most of the time.

That Bombshell Roulette Championship match was mine for the taking. I was ready to make Jessie Salco lose her smile at the go-home show and end that reign. But Georgie had to ruin it. You know what? That's okay, that's okay. I hope Georgie wins at the go-home in Brazil next weekend, because when I win Queen for a Day at Violent Conduct, I'm going to make her life a living hell.

Don't take it as a threat, don't take it as a warning, take it as a promise.

But let's get this back to where it should be. I have a match this weekend against one-half of the reigning and defending Mixed Tag Team Champions of the world. Eiley.

Eiley came into SCW looking to make a name for herself and even though she's been here just over four months, she already has a title over her shoulder, or around her waist. Consider me convinced Good on her. She has potential. Seems to happen a lot for the new girls around these parts. They hit the ground running, win a couple of matches. If they're lucky, maybe they go a few months undefeated or unpinned. Sooner or later, though, that shine starts to come off. That shiny, new toy, it's not shiny anymore, it's not new anymore, either.

You can throw out Eiley going undefeated. She lost her debut match entering the Blast From the Past Tournament. Now, granted, not every Bombshell will win the lottery by getting a Despayre or a J2H as a tag partner, but, hey, at least she tried.

Going unpinned didn't last long either because not even two months in, Eiley was handed her first loss - by someone just as new in the wrestling business as she is. Here I thought Eiley was going to show her mentor Mikah proud with a win over Aleesha, but I guess she had other plans.

3:10 to Yuma.

But, hey, Eiley bounced back from that loss. And now after Summer XXXTreme, she has a title to her name, so all is right in the world. And she beat Samantha Marlowe recently, an SCW Hall of Famer and the all-around goody-two shoes of the Bombshells Division. Maybe she's turning the corner. Except when she did, she just ran into a Bombshell who isn't simply going to roll over and die.

See, Eiley, the moment Christian Underwood booked this match should have told you that you are about to have one of those days where you wished you never came to work. I don't play games, I win games, little girl. And you picked the wrong opponent to fuck with.

I won't get my match against Jessie, so I have to settle getting my hands on you this weekend. And when I do – and I will – I'm going to do the one thing your parents should have done when you were a kid, and that's by kicking your ass. Honestly, if this is how your attitude was when you were a kid, I can see why your parents gave you up.

I get that a lot of my success is tied to my accomplishments and championships, records that I've set, tied, or broken over the years - a few are so impressive they may never be broken. Some people say that glory days have passed me by, and maybe they're right. That same argument has been used by everyone since.

But before the lights came on, before the cameras were rolling, before the closeups were taken, before the championships, records, and accomplishments were won, there was a girl, a porteña, who didn't know a wrist lock from a wrist watch.

As a matter of fact, I didn't even want to become a wrestler. I did the modelling thing, I dabbled in acting. I wasn’t born knowing about wrestling, I wasn't fortunate to have someone in my family tree show me the ropes. I was a late bloomer who climbed the ladder to get to where I am today in my career. I was a champion many times over in many promotions but I came through the doors of Sin City Wrestling with nothing. I didn't become a star overnight.

I started from the bottom, now I'm here.

It's been a decade of dominance ever since.

These days, I don't carry around the top title, or any title for that matter, I don't main event as often as I used to, and my name doesn't strike fear in the hearts of opponents, that much is certain. Wins for me have become a premium. You can even take away the championships, the records, the accomplishments, all the things that made me great.

But at the end of the day, I'm still Mercedes Vargas. I am still a living legend. And win or lose, title or no title, before my prime, in my prime, or past my prime, I will STILL be a living legend.

So, then, the question you should be asking isn't what happens if I don't win, Eiley.

It's what happens if I do.

You're probably thinking, 'Mercedes is not better than me. She's just much, much older than me.' And you're not wrong. But then again, I'm not a Bea Barnhart or a Ruby Steele, opponents anybody could beat while blindfolded and one hand tied behind their back. I'm certainly not Samantha Marlowe who probably had an off night against you. You're facing someone who can still beat any Bombshell, on any Climax Control or supercard, in any match, at any time. Ask around, they'll tell you.

And if you do happen to beat me Sunday, if you happen to pin my shoulders to the mat, Given the chance, if you pin me, that silences all the critics, doubters, and naysayers that I you just beat another SCW Hall of Famer. Momentum or no ahead of your title defense with Oliver at Violent Conduct, you still won't be making it to Mexico in one piece.

When we step into the ring, you better hope you're as good as your threats Sunday and I want you to give me the challenge that I know you can and will be. Can you do that, mamita? The world will be watching and waiting and wondering that very same thing. Take your best shot, Eiley, and it better be a good one. Because if you don't, as God as my witness, I'll make sure you live to regret it.

I want it all. Every ounce of skill, determination and will you have, Eiley. Because I want to see the look on your face when you give it your all and realize not that you weren't good, but you weren't good enough.

[Beijing, China is one of the most beautiful and sought after cities you can't experience just once. That's usually the case for most people. For Mercedes Vargas, this was her first time visiting the city, but her third trip to China in more than a decade and first in more than eight years.

Of course, the best part of visiting Beijing was actually leaving Beijing, and the less time Mercedes had to relive the assault by the brazen Georgie Robertson, the better.

Now, if only this flight could get here.

Mercedes has been traveling a lot in her career, and it never fails that most of that time was spent inside an airport. Layovers can be a bit of a headache, but sometimes they can't be avoided. Seemingly bored despite the swank furnishings and entertainment, Mercedes is seen with one hand drinking a cup of coffee, the other hand holding her cellphone as she looks down at her cousin Carmen on the screen through video chat.]

Carmen: Another morning, another great day to be alive. Beijing, huh? I bet you're having a great time. I'm jealous.

Mercedes: Don't be. I was about to go home before I found out I had a match this weekend. I'm traveling to Peru as soon as this layover is over. I can waste so much time refreshing Twitter before boredom sets in.

Carmen: Ah, the dreaded long layover, that break between flights that seems to last forever. I take it you didn't get enough sleep?

Mercedes: Oh, I slept like a baby. Not really. I slept very little on that last flight. To be honest, I'm feeling pretty tired. I know that I'm awake, but I still feel asleep, you know?

Carmen: Did you pick the aisle seat or the window seat if you wanted to sleep on the flight?

Mercedes: My flight was so overbooked I'm lucky I got any seat. You know I always take the aisle seat, Carmen. I don't want to get crushed in a wall by the window seat, I need the freedom to stretch my legs, I wont have to climb over people to get to the restroom, and I can exit the plane faster. Aisle, always.

Carmen: Okay, but don't you want to relax and enjoy the view?

Mercedes: Who the hell wants to see clouds for three hours? That's crazy.

Carmen: You can't see the Rocky Mountains or the Grand Canyon from the aisle seat. Plus, I read somewhere that you can catch germs easily in an aisle seat. You did tell me you're a germaphobe.

Mercedes: I'm also claustrophobic. I guess if it's a short flight, I could take the window, but that's the only exception.

Carmen: Anyone with you?

Mercedes: Just me, exhaustion, and my belongings. And hunger.

Carmen: Let's face it, airplane food isn't the best. So if you've got a layover to kill, you might as well grab something to eat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Mercedes: Food looks pretty decent. Scrambled eggs, some fruit, and some pudding. It's going to be an all day travel adventure.

Carmen: Aunt Estelle told me what happened. You know, you pick and choose your battles.

Mercedes: I may actually have to fight them. And you don't have to know about all of them.

Carmen: No, just the really important ones.

Present Day ♦ C U  Z C O,  P E R U

[REC•]

[The scenic surroundings, beautiful weather, and incredible culture have made South America one of the preferred travel destinations. For the adventurous to the zealous, all of South America had something to offer. Peru had its own wonders, from the Inca ruins to iconic landmarks like thr Machu Picchu; cobblestoned alleyways to beautiful monuments,

Each lazy day spent wandering was one more day she did not want to leave. But the sightseeing is over because it was now time to take care of business this weekend. The camera steps back, showing Mercedes walking in and around the city.]

"Welcome to Peru. I'm walking along one of the many markets here in Cusco. The market at Pisac is crowded on Sundays, when all the indigenous people come to the main plaza to sell their goods, but anytime is a good time to visit. The quaint streets of the small village are filled to the brim with vendors selling everything you could imagine. Amazing."

[Mercedes continues talking but not directly at the camera.]

"With less than a month until yours truly, Mercedes Vargas, graces the stage at Violent Conduct, and perhaps maybe leaving this pay-per-view event with the Queen for a Day, I'm so looking forward to facing Zoey, Tempest, and Kim Page in Mexico. Before that, though, I have Eiley as my opponent.

"The only problem is, just how am I going to prepare for this match? As someone who has never faced one of Mikah's prizes students, I should be freaking out, right? Maybe start pulling my hair, right?"

[Mercedes grabs a handful of her hair as she says this]

"I should be pulling my hair out, waking up in cold sweats and biting my nails and worrying about our match. Wait. I think the better question is should I be."

[She pauses for a second.]

"Or, rather, should Eiley be?"

[Mercedes stands to her right, the sun casts an orange haze below the horizon now. Almost despite herself, Mercedes nods in understanding. It was as good a reason as any why she felt strongly the way she did, but it's not like Mercedes booked her own matches or anything.]

"See, because it doesn't matter what the stipulation is. It doesn't matter the count is. I don't have to get ready, I stay ready. Whatever challenge Eiley poses is nothing compared to any opponent that I've beaten.

"Eiley will try her level best to get me off my game, but as she'll find out at Climax Control, the game plays her. I can already tell she's got a mouth on her - typical of anyone trained by Mikah - and very few people have not been able to get under someone's skin the way she has. Something tells me she won't be exchanging Christmas cards with the other Bombshells this year.

"I know she's likely going to mock me for everything that I've done and everything that I am, and that's okay.
If she wants to hold that against me, that's fine. She's not the first, she's not the last. She's just going to be the next to realize first hand why that mistake will be the last thing she will ever do."

[Mercedes stops and turns to the camera, tossing her hair about. Apparently, she was ready to bring this promo to a close as she folds her arms crossed in front of her with an unfazed look.]

"So come on, Eiley. Tell your adoring public what you're going to do to beat me, tell them, and then tell them what you told them. And if you do, and if they take your words as gospel, come look for me. I'll be waiting for you in the ring, waiting for you to come on down. You bring your belt...bring Oliver....bring everything...that...you...have. Because I'm not heading to Peru this weekend just to lose. But somebody has to. Somebody has to lose at Climax Control 369 and unfortunately for you, it will be you."

[Mercedes lifts her head up and runs her right hand through her hair and continues.]

"And after this, that's it, it's over, Eiley. After I beat you, when I stand, victorious, over your limp, lifeless body...."

[Mercedes mimics having her hand raised then her arms goes limp.]

"You will know the difference between fantasy and reality. The reality is you're about to get beat. The fantasy is thinking you had any choice in the matter."

[Her tone softens and she perks up now sounding rather upbeat.]

"No tiene pelos en la lengua. Crees que eres el mejor, chica? Tres palabras simples...Demuéstrenmelo."

[Mercedes tilts her head, looking back at the camera, then raises a finger as if she clearly forgot something she needed to mention.]

"Woops! Sorry, Eiley. I'm not sure if you really understood that. But if you didn't, that's okay, too. Instead of translation, how about I show you first hand why Latinas do it better, and why Mercedes Vargas is the best.

"Long before you knew and long after you remember."

[With a parting wave, Mercedes walks off and we're left with another shot of the Pisac market as we fade.]

Now, I know what you’re thinking. "Mercedes, you just walked out of yet another Summer XXXTreme, in yet another title match, in yet another pay-per-view, in yet another opportunity at the Bombshell Roulette Championship, and boarding yet another lonely flight back home with nothing to show for it. Isn't it about time you, you know, retire?"

I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a part of me that wonders what it would be like to sit back and relax on some beach with a drink with a little umbrella in there instead of living out on a suitcase. I know I'm not getting any younger, some already say I'm past my prime to compete with the competition.

Maybe I should just give this up. Maybe I should cut my losses now and quit while I'm ahead. So many opportunities, always finding myself in contendership or title matches, never quite getting the job done. I think I qualify as a choke artist. And I get it, I totally get it. It's a 'what have you done for me lately' kind of world we live in. Retirement sure sounds good right now.

Listen, I'll cut a deal with you: if Jessie Salco wins the Bombshell Championship, I'll consider it.

But let's get this back to where it should be. I just lost another match in what is another lost year for yours truly. But still, I am a two-time SCW Hall of Famer, a two-time Bombshell world champion, a one-time Bombshell Internet champion, a four-time Bombshell Roulette champ, a six-time Tag titleholder between the Bombshell World Tag and Mixed Tag titles, and a former and the first ever Queen for a Day. I have to win sometimes, right? I wouldn't have the second-most career wins ever in the company if I wasn't.

Right?

Right.

Facing Seleana Zdunich this weekend wasn't exactly on my bingo card, but I'm thinking I'm going to show mercy against everyone's favorite little Swedish idiot. I just don't know if her ego can take much kicking after the year she's having, but I'm pretty sure I'm obligated to do so. So, that being said, I hope she enjoys eating the canvas again.

So, final words, I hope Seleana brings her A-game, because I sure will be. You best believe I'm going to be out to ruin her summer.

ABOARD THE SUN PRINCESS CRUISELINER

[Four weeks ago, Mercedes Vargas had her first win in SCW in a very long time. Sure, it was only a dominant win over a member of the prestigious Steele family, but, in the end, it didn't matter. Her hand was still raised at the end of the match with Ruby. It was no big deal, really. Grand Canyon University Arena was just another venue she's visited many times before. Her dominant victory against Ruby was trivial to the one thing greater than facing an inferior opponent, it was greater than her victories few and far between this year.]

“Looks like today is going to be another beautiful day.”

"You're in a good mood. This is, this is good."

[Mercedes spun around on her chair where she gazed at the screen of her open laptop in front of her, and there was the familiar visage of her parents, Estelle lazily on the couch, half interested in the telenovela on the television. Fernando pops in and out of frame.

[Even after an active-filled week aboard the Sun Princess, Mercedes Vargas is tired, but sleep is the last thing on her mind. Instead, admiring herself in front of a mirror, Mercedes adds the finishing touches to her makeup to conclude what was a half hour session. She exudes excitement despite her lack of sleep and disappointment.

A week removed from Summer XXXTreme, the Hall of Famer was looking forward to what was to be another exciting supercard, especially the tall task she faced on the weekend when she battled Jessie Salco and Laura Phoenix. No doubt visions of a Bombshell Roulette Championship triumph in the Ultimate X Over the Pool. Salco and Phoenix, legendary ring generals like herself, Mercedes hoped to once again defy expectations in making history one more time.

As was the case this year, history was delayed.

Mercedes takes up her iPhone and, sure enough, they were already tweets talking about the night's main event the world over. J2H reclaimed the world championship in what will likely be one of the most remarkable come back stories of the year.

If only her own match turned out the same way.]

Mercedes: Why wouldn't I be, Mom? I'm on an all-expense paid two-week vacation, I get to lounge around in a mini-suite if I want, and there's so much to do on the ship. It's like groundhog's day.

Estelle: Par for the course. You've had this luxury for 10 years.

Fernando: How come you never invite us?

Mercedes: Not true. Every year, I tell you about the cruise. You always promise to come, but you never do.

[In reality, she was glad her parents didn't come. It's been awhile since her last win at Summer XXXTreme, and she didn't want to live to see another disappointing night.]

Estelle: Maybe it's best we didn't.

Mercedes: What? What's that supposed to mean? You're my biggest cheerleaders aside from my friends.

Estelle: The next overseas trip is in Rome, right?

Mercedes: Yeah.

Estelle: I'm not going.

Mercedes: To Rome? Why?

Estelle: Think of the last time I went to Italy.

Fernando: Was it as exciting as Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Katherine Hepburn in Summertime?

Estelle: I'm serious. I never liked heights, I never liked flights, and last time I've been to Italy, I have never come home from somewhere saying to myself, "I don't want to go back there." Just when passing people on the street I felt a very "unfriendly" vibe.

Mercedes: So you had a bad experience nine years ago. Anything can happen in cities these days. I'm thinking this has something to do with me then this trip.

Fernando:  I think what we were trying to say is we really don't want to look back at your life and wonder about all the roads you could have travelled but didn't.

Mercedes: I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

[Mercedes stands to her feet. She looks off, thinking, smiling, then back at some notes in her notepad.]

Mercedes: I've got to go.

Estelle: Fernando, mi corazón, ven conmigo. Venga.

[With that, Mercedes closes the laptop. Another weekend on the high seas and already she wanted to return back stateside. With another overseas tour just on the horizon, she couldn't wait to be over.]

Present Day ♦ R O M E, I T A L Y

[REC•]

"I don't always visit Rome, but when I do, I never want to leave. Just look at this place!"

[The photos over social media, travel brochures, magazines and the web doesn't do one of the most beautiful cities in the world justice. Behind Mercedes is the famed Pantheon. Mercedes stands just before the fountain in front of the landmark architecture.]

"You know, I've come so close to tasting championship gold a few times in Sin City Wrestling. I've come within fingertips of capturing another championship to add to my legacy. But it was not to be two weeks ago, the memory of Summer XXXTreme still haunts me even now. Come to think of it, my success at this supercard isn't anything to write home about. Ten times I've been on that card. Only won once, and that was more than five years ago. Haven't won since. Go figure.

I've had some tough moments. The time I was part of the main event in 2016, the Elimination Chamber match? Crystal Caldwell retained the Bombshell Championship. I didn't even make it in the final three in that match. That one time teaming up with Delia Darling to regain the Bombshell World Tag Titles from The Fallen in 2015? We failed. Turned out that match would be Delia's last match in SCW. Another tag match, this time with me, Celeste North and Veronica Taylor against Devona, Amy Santino, and Jessie Salco. Yup, lost that one, too. The Mean Girls quietly disbanded after seven months and Celeste North quit as leader after three months and promptly left the company, just like that."

[Mercedes brushes away a few strands of her hair from her eyes and takes a deep breath as she sees her breath in the cold. Having to relieve these series of unfortunate events aboard the cruiseship were some of the highlights - or, rather, lowlights, of this supercard.]

"But through all that? Those moments didn't hurt like what happened two weeks ago. It wasn't as bad as in 2019 when my fourth Bombshell Roulette Championship reign ended. None of those moments haunt me then two weeks ago when I had a golden opportunity in making history one more time aboard the Sun Princess. Five years ago, I walked in as a challenger and I walked out one-half of the World Mixed Tag Team Champions, became the only Bombshell to win every championship in the women's division, and became a two-time Bombshell Grand Slam winner. Two weeks ago I walked in as a challenger and I walked out with nothing to show for it."

[A pause is met as she gathers her thoughts before raising her head again.]

"When my third Bombshell Roulette Championship reign ended in 2015, it took four years before anybody broke the records I set for that title. I had to sit there and watch people like Jessie Salco and Amy Santino trade the title like a game of hot potato.

Now in the Year of our Lord 2023, I have to live with the fact Jessie Salco lives to see a fifth title reign and another title defense and I didn't get the chance to wipe the smirk off her face. That I have to see her defend the title against Laura Phoenix - and good on her to stepping up to the plate to challenge for the title in this weekend's main event - just pisses me off. I don't need the Bombshell Roulette Championship, that title needs me. I just wanted to win the Ultimate X match just to deny Laura her first championship, and to see Jessie squirm.

"But I know I can't stay mad forever. Because this weekend with Seleana Zdunich in this Queen for a Day qualifier, I get an opportunity to compete in the Queen for a Day match. We both know what's at stake. Seleana's already been in one. I've been in three, including winning the first. But this isn't 2014, and this won't be a battle royal. I've been in the ladder match, so I know what must be done."

[A pause is met as she gathers her thoughts before raising her head again to finish her promo.]

"Now, a lot of people know the history between Seleana and I in SCW, always competitive, try to leave everything in the ring. Sunday, I'm coming for blood. I'm going to do whatever it takes, whatever is necessary to claim my spot in the Queen for a Day.

"Seleana, looks like it's you and me, sister. And it seems like you haven't had an easy time in the win column lately, which is sad and kind of pathetic at the same time. Where is The Cat and what have you done with her? Has she lost her claws?"

[Mercedes laughs and tosses her hair back.]

"I know how much this match means to you. You’ve been on this downward spiral lately, and you’re probably thinking that a win, any win at all, will somehow turn your fortunes around. The important thing is at least you’re getting up. At least you’re not giving up. And this Sunday, maybe, just maybe, fortune will smile upon you because you got me at a bad time. But make no mistake about it - you're still facing Mercedes Vargas.

"Do I still have to prove myself to you, Seleana? Is that a challenge? Because I love challenges, and I hope you’ll be able to put your money where your mouth is. I really don’t have to prove myself to you or anyone else for that matter. I’m already a proven commodity, none of my previous accomplishments - or yours - matters here.

"I am amazing. You know it, I know it, and SCW certainly knows it. I know you're not going to stay down, though you should take that offer into consideration, it would save you from being embarrassed. Or, even better, just forfeit the match.  It would save us from having to go through with this altogether. But knowing you, you’re all too willing to ignore my foolish advice. The only way you’re going to beat me is by divine intervention…

"Hope for the best, prepare for the worse. And may the odds be ever in your favor."

[Our scene fades on Mercedes waving at the camera, adding a smile as she does so and we fade to black.]

They say you learn something new everyday, and that couldn't be further from the truth. The three most unbelieved statements in the world are:

1) The check is in the mail;

2) Of course, I’ll love you in the morning like I do tonight, and

3) I’m from the government and I’m here to help.

And just for a bonus, I'll add one more.

4) Ruby Steele, Bombshell Champion.

Well, the only time that last one happens is if Ruby gets a replica championship from SCW Shop. But let's get this back to where it should be.

This year has not been the best for yours truly. This was supposed to be the year I  finally achieve my ultimate goals of winning a championship for the first time in a long time.

I haven't won a match in seemingly forever and despite the losses and the putdowns and all the criticism regarding my career, I've become an afterthought in the women's division - and I'm a two-time Hall of Famer.

At this point, no one thinks I can do anything. I had no business losing to Bobbie Dahl or Samantha Marlowe, I could have won the Bombshell Championship from Roxi Johnson. That Bombshell Roulette Championship contendership should have been mine at Blaze of Glory.

Losing happens to everyone. There are few things that are worse than losing. But I guess things isn't all that bad. I mean, I could be Ruby Steele. You remember Ruby, right? She of the illustrious Steele Family. The English tart whose only claim to fame was that one time she got lucky in winning the Blast From the Past Tournament (not to mention she got to have a second chance when her original tag partner bailed on her after the first round) and failed to win the Bombshell Championship after the fact.

For someone who was the protege of a Hall of Famer like Mikah and being married to Mikah’s first ever student, Courtney Pierce - the new Bombshell Champion - you would think that success would rub off on Ruby.

For one thing, I can't figure out the Steele's obsession with trying to stay relevant. I understand why like her cousin, Kate, that Ruby will do absolutely anything to try to stay with the cool kids, but come on. Coincidence? I think not.

No, that's not it. Just Ruby looking for clout. The Steele Family is notorious for this.

When you know, you know.

So Ruby steps in the ring with me and while this year hasn't been anything to write home about, a motivated Mercedes is a dangerous Mercedes, and I still got the experience to put Ruby away and get back to being the best version of myself.

I know that Ruby is coming off that loss to Eiley a few weeks back answering the question of who was the better protégé of Mikah - the match we never wanted but needed - so she's looking to rebound from that loss. Only thing is, she picked a bad week to do it.

But let's rewrite history. Let's pretend that Ruby is who she is in SCW. Let's pretend, for a moment, that despite the vast experience between us that's going to be clearly seen when we're put in the same ring, that you prove me wrong. Let's go with admitting that I respect Ruby even though she doesn't respect me.

I  know Ruby is a fairly good competitor, I've seen what she can do. It's just that when it comes to you and me, me and you, you don't stand a chance. That's not an opinion, that's not theory, that's just plain facts.

I'm done playing games. I've more than proven a lot of doubters wrong over the years. My resume in SCW and longevity says a lot and more often than not it tends to drown out the haters. In a women's locker room that often sees competitors come and go within a couple years, if that, I've been one of the longest active here. I've been such a constant presence for the past 10 years now that it's almost easy to forget about my successes. I get no respect. With or without a title, I've proven without a doubt that I'm the most accomplished talent in the women's division and there is not a person alive on this roster that can say that I don’t have what it takes to become champion.

They say you’re only as good as your last match and it’s not how you start but how you finish. I've had more than a few weeks to reflect on my defeats and this Sunday I'm going to go take care of business. I'm going to go fix that. I'm going to right the ship. I'm going to find a way to win my next match and end this losing streak I’ve been on since May. That's what I'm trying to do, that's what I'm going to do. I'm wrestling again this weekend, getting an opportunity to finally put this losing streak behind me and I plan to show Ruby why she picked the wrong week to face the Dynasty of Sin City Wrestling.

Long before she knew and long after she remembers.

You ever get that feeling when no matter what you do, nothing seems to go right? It starts small, a series of unfortunate events. A razor-thin loss here, coming up short in a title match there. A second off from saving a match before the bell in a multiwoman match. Having a bad day can happen from time to time, but when those days turn into weeks or months or years? When life keeps piling it on? Sometimes the annoyances and frustrations build up that it’s hard to stay motivated when you’re stuck in neutral.

I wear many hats, but I live my life in the wrestling ring, more than I care to admit. I also travel. At some point, I’m going to be tired living life out of a suitcase. Maybe I already have. I wake up, work, go to bed, and repeat. 14 years. 10 of those years in Sin City Wrestling.

I’ve seen it all, I’ve done it all. I’m at a place in life where I’m most happy and I could go without winning another championship and still be more relevant that I am now. People come and go, give excuses, criticize the company. But while the names and faces may change, one thing is always constant: Everything, everything, is a competition. Whoever said winning isn’t everything, never knew what it is to start with. It’s not even about the will to win…everybody has that. Why do you think we show up every night in the six-sided ring? It’s certainly not to parade around the ring like pandering show ponies.

No matter how much I’ve won in my career, no matter how many matches I’ve been in, no matter how many championships, no matter how many records set, tied, or broken, the Hall of Fame inductions, I’m not winning now, so this is where I’m at. I’ve been to the mountaintop many times before, but maybe this is what it feels like to hit rock bottom.

The critics are always right. The only way to keep them quiet is by winning. I’m a pretty good winner, I’m also a sore loser. And I rub it in pretty good when I win. Proud of it, not afraid to say it. At the end of the day, when it comes down to it, while it's important to pause after a defeat, or in my case a series of defeats, I shouldn't stop. So I can’t, and I won’t. I need to climb out of this hole and get back on track.

I’m not always in tag matches, but when I am, it’s usually set up against opponents I really don’t like. Facing a member of the “prestigious” Warren clan is bad enough, but adding Seleana Zdunich makes it worse.  Dawn means well - that she honestly thinks her career will be greater than her brother or cousin is comical at best and downright sad at worse - but you have to think that her little win streak she’s been on has been to luck. That ends this weekend, she just doesn’t know it yet. As far as Seleana goes, luck won’t even save her this weekend. She’s fucked.

Besides the fact she is married to Crystal - and yet even that is questionable these days with how her wife changed her name for the millionth time - Seleana made her way to the top of Kim Pain’s hit list, through no fault of her own but was likely to happen due to something Crystal did or said or by simply existing. That’s just life when you’re married to Crystal. Too bad talent isn’t sexually transmitted. If that was the case, Seleana would be a lot further in her career than she is now.

They say that familiarity breeds contempt. True words were never spoken. Now do I hate Seleana? Hate is a strong word. Every fiber of my being hates everything about her, but that’s besides the point. That we’re standing from each other in a match in SCW for the fifth year in a row makes me sick. Was I really that evil in my past life?

Some might say I should feel a little insulted with this match, that I probably should angled for a better opponent, but to be honest with you, I'm perfectly fine with it. I'm not going to lose sleep this weekend because of The Cat. No, I don't think I will, and why? Because no matter what Seleana’s last name is, she is, was, and always will be just another marginal talent on the roster who had it too good for too long and only got by because she had enough skill to avoid sitting backstage at catering every week. That she’s still reeling from that loss to Kim Page two weeks ago, and believe me, it was tough seeing her staring up at the arena lights since her last win but in October, but maybe her better days are behind her? As a matter of fact, I wonder if she could offer me a few tips ahead of our match, but I would love to see her fall flat on her face again. And when that happens? They'll be no pity party here because I'll be too busy laughing when she gets her ass handed to her in this tag match.

My partner in Kim Pain knows her way around the ring, so I’m not complaining. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t be more happier. She and I seem to share a kindred spirit almost. We like competition, we’ve been successful practically everywhere in our respective careers, and we can mix it up with just about anyone inside the ring. But in order to make this partnership work, I need to hold down my end.

Dawn Warren is off to a hot start while Seleana, like myself, is still seeking her first win of 2023. I like to keep Kim undefeated in SCW, so I’m going to try my damndest to walk out with our heads held high and our hands raised.

If I was Dawn and Seleana, I wouldn’t want to show up to Reno, Nevada this weekend. It will be the last thing they will ever do.

[Mercedes Vargas sits leisurely on her living room couch in her Los Angeles residence. On an otherwise clear seventy-degree afternoon, the Argentine and SCW Hall of Famer kept her brunette hair firmly hidden under a fedora while sporting a t-shirt and skinny jeans. The somber mood is just as dark as the watercolor impression she stares at from afar. Irma stands back to gaze at her handiwork, a work in progress, her palette and brush at the ready.]

MERCEDES: Guess what?

IRMA: What?

MERCEDES: My washer is out again….

IRMA: Are you concerned?

MERCEDES: Yes. This is a matter of life and death. And laundry.

IRMA: Would you like to talk about it?

MERCEDES: I just did.

[Irma paints a whole forest with just a few strokes of her hand.]

IRMA: They say the average person says about 16,000 words each day. It is not yet 9 a.m. and you haven’t exceeded your limit for the day.

MERCEDES: Brevity is key.

[Irma unwraps a Twix bar and takes a bite.]

IRMA: You seem crabby.

MERCEDES: Sorry. I just had a bad couple of weeks.

IRMA: What’s really going on?

MERCEDES: I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, a lot of soul searching, and I think maybe it’s time to walk away.

IRMA: What? You already told everyone you would never walk away unless -

MERCEDES: People change their mind all the time about things. The doubters, critics and naysayers made their choice. Does that make me a loser? Does that make me just another face on the roster seemingly looking to return to their former glory? Does that mean my career burned twice as bright before lasting half as long?

IRMA: Have you heard about Napoleon?

MERCEDES: The emperor who lost France? Yeah, what about him?

IRMA: La gloria es efímera, pero laoscuridad es para siempre. Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever. People remember your fame, Mercedes, but once it's gone, it's forever.

MERCEDES: That's why there's the record books. I’ll never be forgotten.

IRMA: Maybe that’s why you will never walk away. You miss the crowds and the energy that comes back from them, it's hard to get that anywhere else. It’s not like you can’t go back to acting and modeling.

[She begins adding more detailing on the canvas.]

Mercedes: Is there really a difference between left and right Twix? Maybe I am all messed up since I can’t tell.

[Irma uses a script liner brush to sign her latest work, a foggy scene.]

Irma: Whichever side of a Twix you eat first, either is a good choice.

Mercedes: That…that was really deep.

[REC•]

"So my last match in SCW didn’t exactly work out as I thought it would, considering what happened two weeks ago."

[Our scene opens where the last one left off as Mercedes is back again lying back in a hammock and enjoying the weather. For a moment, she sits up and positions herself to address the camera.]

"And, yes, while those poor fans will be seeing Roxi Johnson challenging Amber Ryan for the Bombshell Championship at Blaze of Glory again this year, this is my fault and I take full responsibility for that. I don’t want Roxi to tie the record for most Bombshell Championship reigns, and I’m sure Amber doesn’t want to see that happen either, let alone having to relive losing the Bombshell Championship this early in her reign.

“That being said, I have my own match to worry about this weekend. I still don't know what I did to deserve a match at Blaze of Glory much less the go-home show this weekend before the supercard, but at this point I’ll take any match I can get if only to get my first win of the new year. I just didn’t think it would be in a tag match.”

[Clicking her tongue partly out of dismay and partly out of the sheer wonder of it all, Mercedes' smile faded as she briefly shakes her head, a look of disappointment is there too.]

"Anyway, maybe this weekend will be better. I'll be honest, I didn't think I'd been on the card but here I am. Don't get me wrong, the competition won't make it easy and they're going to try their damndest to make that a reality. Despite the losses and the putdowns and all the criticism regarding my career, that's just giving me more motivation to succeed. For far too long, I've survived and thrived in Sin City Wrestling even when talent has come and gone from this company more times than I care to remember, and why? Because I haven't accepted the conventional wisdom that my competition is better than me.”

[Mercedes was always told to err on the side of caution, but such advice meant little to her. Murphy's Law has a funny way of ruining plans - even the best laid plans - but there's just no way she could mess this up, right?]

"Speaking of, this is my first time facing someone new for a change in SCW and while Dawn Warren has picked up a few notable wins, if you can call it that, I haven't exactly been catching up. She calls herself *checks notes* The Pink Puppy.”

[She musters a deadpan expression, then gives an innocent shrug.]

“You can’t make this stuff up. Among a list of grating nicknames names, imagine what Dawn’s career would be like if she took herself seriously instead of going with something that sounds like a newest addition to The Littlest Petshop. At least Seleana had the right idea. A cat would be tough to take in a fight. Sharks, bulldogs and snakes are vicious, tough and dominate their territory. A puppy is not an intimidating or cool nickname at all. How hard must it have been for Belinda and Jason calling the action or Justin saying “the pink puppy” whenever there’s a match? They are plenty of other animal names that would have worked better.

“When you’re just starting out in wrestling and trying to make a name for yourself, you don’t have the luxury of taking a day off. Thing is, Dawn is going to have to, how you say "level up", if she's going to have any chance of walking out of this match with a victory. She didn't do too bad against Luna and somehow got past Krystal last week, but she's in way over head this time around and I think she knows this too. She's not gonna stumble across a couple of newcomers in wrestling school. She's coming up against champions, people who are used to the pressure, people who know how to pick apart people not on their game and she's so far off her game it’s not even finny. To be honest, I almost feel sorry for Dawn, and I’m being kind when I say that.”

[Mercedes shrugs her shoulders, offering a sincere look of an apology, or as close to one as she could muster.]

“We’ve seen this movie before about the plucky underdog overcoming the odds and riding off into the sunset. Life doesn't work like that. And come Sunday, Dawn and her mentor are going to find that out the hard way so I hope she enjoyes the selfies she took, the tears she cried, the hugs she got, the night of free games at the arcade because it won't be long before it's over."

[Mercedes angles her head to one side as her arrogance shines through. A small smile turns into a satisfying grin.]

“Seleana is known as one of the most underrated women on the Bombshell roster, which is puzzling because for someone with her looks, personality and pedigree as a second-generation wrestler she would be a far bigger star in SCW than she is. She will never become as big as her wife, but she still is commended for her hard work and strong effort to improve. She got a few championships to her name so it has to count for something.

“It's almost cute the way Seleana is desperately trying to get me to crumble at her badassery, like I'm supposed to be intimidated, like I'm supposed to be scared of her. Trust me, nobody is scared of Seleana Zdunich. People don’t shell out tickets to see Seleana Zdunich. Seleana and I have a storied history in SCW so she knows there's no limit to the lengths and depths I will go to bring the fight to her.“

[Mercedes points to herself. She speaks slowly, and clearly articulates her next words.]

"This here...this is what success looks like. This is what it looks like when you’ve made it. This is what it looks like when you've proven your worth in this industry. Some say age comes before beauty. I say age comes with experience and experience comes from a lot of good judgement. And I'm a good judge of character. I like to think so anyway. For all her skill, determination and will, there's nothing Seleana can ever do to get on my level. Sunday isn't going to be an audition, it's a reminder.”

[Mercedes pauses for emphasis, taking time to gesture at her checklist, complete with the names of Seleana and Dawn already added in cursive in felt-tip red Sharpie.]

"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best….”

[Mercedes stares menacing into the camera. She lowers her voice, barely a whisper.]

“And may the odds be ever in your favor."

[With that, the scene fades on Mercedes' confident smirk before she offers a heart gesture with her hands before breaking it in two.]

semana del 29 de enero al 5 de febrero de 2023

My career has been a lot like a road trip. Sometimes I take a detour. Adjust the speed. Change my destination. Ask for directions. Take rest stops along the way. I was here for all of them. Yet no matter how bad the road and accommodations got, I reminded myself that sometimes it's the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.

This is my tenth year in Sin City Wrestling. Spending a decade in one company, while extremely rare, is an impressive feat, and now I’ve joined that exclusive club alongside Jessie Salco and Roxi Johnson. Something to be proud of.

I’ve had consistency of success in my career, and that can’t be argued. To see where I am now and what I've been through, anyone in my shoes would have thrown in the towel and quit the next day. But this five foot seven, 125-pound Latina has come a long way. If you asked anybody in that locker room, anybody who have stepped foot in the six-sided ring and laced up a pair of boots, that my career would last this long, they would probably call you crazy. Most would still. I must be crazy too thinking that I somehow could keep up with an ever-changing roster that gets more talented by the day.

But let gets this back to where it should be.

There is so much to say about Roxi Johnson in defense of her position as the SCW’s GOAT. The four world championships, the overall nine championships to her career, the deserved Hall of Fame induction, her many Year-End Awards wins, the longevity of her career, the leader in career wins, main event wins, overall main events matches, the chance of being the first wrestler reaching 100 wins, the amazing and almost uncanny ability to win and win and win.

Alicia Lukas is SCW. That’s according to the mysterious intern behind SCW’s Twitter account. But to be fair, it’s been awhile since we heard those lofty words - something along the lines of four years, give or take a few leap years - after the fact that our Sassy Southern Belle wrestled only two matches just four months into her debut at the time. Once upon a time, Alicia was the hood ornament of the Bombshells Division, and it really didn’t take long for that to happen. Outside of the hiccup of losing the Bombshell Championship to a certain Bombshell (see: Zdunich, Seleana), she still managed to become a three-time champion quicker than either me or Roxi. 19 months. She was the first Bombshell to win Wrestler of the Year and Woman of the Year and of only two woman to ever pull that feat off. If that doesn’t make her a big deal, then I don’t know what will.

But, see, history has a way of forgetting as much as happening and the past tense can be brutal to those who crave history. This is the boat that Roxi and Alicia are both on. And to a certain extent, yours truly. With names like Amber Ryan and Masque de Lune staking their claim in the division in the last year or so, their rise has also slightly, slowly, but inevitably help many to remember Alicia, Roxi, and me as something that was, not something that is.

As much as people want to put Alicia and Roxi on some kind of pedestal, my legacy will last in ways their greatness won’t. Despite our respective accomplishments in Sin City Wrestling, no matter how many matches I’ve lost, no matter how many times I’ve failed, the
debate of who is the most accomplished woman in the company isn’t much of a debate at all.

I’ve won the present just as much as the future.

Well, the immediate future begins Sunday. Christian Underwood, in all his infinite wisdom, had decided to put Alicia, Roxi, and I in a triple threat where the winner gets Amber Ryan at Blaze of Glory. Either one of us can pose a threat to Amber on her worst day. But we all know we’re going to have to be on our best day to wrestle the title from her grip. There’s a reason why she had an iron grip on the Bombshell Championship for almost a year.

That said, the history between Alicia, Roxi, and I runs deep. There’s not going to be some magic moment at which we’re sitting around a campfire toasting marshmallows, singing 'Kumbaya'. I don’t like them, they don’t like me, and Alicia and Roxi don’t like one each other. I’m almost sure we won’t be exchanging Christmas cards this year.

I haven’t forgotten that I beat Alicia last year. It was a feel good moment for me in a year that had few good moments aside from taking my pen and rewriting my name in the record books. I haven’t forgotten the last time Roxi and I were part of a triple threat match either. Wasn’t my night, but Roxi retained the Bombshell Championship. Kudos to her.

Alicia is just rearing to go, and that’s great, because if she wanted to fight, hey, I have no problem throwing down. Roxi wants another go at Amber, but I just might be the one to play spoiler. I might still be coming off my loss at Inception, but I'll be more then happy to show Alicia and Roxi why underestimating me will be their biggest mistake. Anyone should know better than to count me out of any match. I'm a different breed of opponent and no matter the outcome, I don't get ready, I stay ready.

Alicia thinks I’m not worthy of being in this match, and that’s okay, SCW knows I'm championship material. You don't win championships in each of your first nine years in the company much less become the most decorated wrestler in the company if you weren't good enough.

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me! And if you hate me, well, I rather be hated for who I am than who I'm not. What separates me from the pack: I am everything they’re not and everything they wish they could be.

Come Sunday, if I win...WHEN I win, I get a date with the Red Hurricane herself. I may not be the favorite, but I have enough drive to make it a fight with anyone. I'm going to try my damndest to win this match. I'm going to be the number-one contender. Because I AM the contender.

Not a threat, not an promise. Just a matter of fact. Alicia and Roxi wanna prove me wrong?

They got one shot.

“I wish I didn’t get married. The BS from the in-laws, my husband is lazy, my children are failures….”

[When Estelle looks back up, she sees her husband and children all standing there with aplomb.]

.::MERCEDES and FERNANDO::..
WHAT THE HELL, MOM?!

.::ESTELLE::..
Uh, how long have you all been standing there?

.::FERNANDO::..
Long enough to be uncomfortable.

.::ESTELLE::..
Mercedes, can you lower your standards and get a husband?

.::MERCEDES::..
What? But Mom, I don’t have any standards. Kind of like you.

[Estelle shoots her daughter a dirty look.]

.::MERCEDES::..
I don’t understand why anyone gets married. Almost all of my friends are miserable.

.::ESTELLE::..
What are the odds?

.::MERCEDES::..
65 percent. At least that’s the divorce rate in California.

.::ESTELLE::..
Maybe you need new friends.

[While her parents’ visit was unexpected, Mercedes trudges through what was she felt was an interrogation.]

[Fernando gets done feeding a school of guppies in an aquarium. Mercedes watches as the fish gobble up the flakes.]

.::FERNANDO::..
Can I ask you a question?

[Estelle gives her husband an arched eyebrow.]

.::ESTELLE::..
You can ask, sure. Whether you’ll get an answer is another matter.

.::FERNANDO::..
 I’ll take my chances.

[He tilts her head to the side for comic effect.]

.::FERNANDO::..
It’s getting late and there isn’t anything for dinner.

.::ESTELLE::..
Just so you know, UberEats is a thing now…

[She gives a nonchalant shrug.]

.::FERNANDO::..
Sure, but no one cooks like you.

.::MERCEDES::..
 To be fair, mom, your cooking is truly unforgettable

.::ESTELLE::..
Someone’s a little jealous I see.

.::MERCEDES::..
Unforgettable isn’t always a good thing.

.::ESTELLE::..
Mercedes, we visit you at least three times a year. Are you getting enough oxygen here?

[Her parents looks around the apartment as Mercedes kicks the door shut using her boot.]

.::MERCEDES::..
Sorry for the mess. If I had known guest were coming, I would have cleaned up sooner.

[The scene opens on Mercedes Vargas with a smug look on her face. The two-time SCW Hall of Famer spends the afternoon feeding wild ducks on the boardwalk of the Santa Monica Pier. Wearing a pair of black-rimmed library glasses, the Argentine seems to enjoy the tranquil nature of her surroundings. She throws what left of the pieces out of a box of Wheat Thins she has in her hand before turning to the camera. The Argentine has her signature clipboard in hand, which she tucks underneath her arm for the moment.]

“Sin City Wrestling, how are you doing? Good? Good.

"You know, as one of the longest-tenured veterans on the roster - and THE most successful might I add - it amazes me that year after year, there’s always a new turnover of talent just waiting to make a name for themselves. In my career, I’ve seen of them all, I’ve more than likely beaten them all. Sometimes they’re only around for a cup of coffee, other times the trash take themselves out. The names may all change, but one thing remains the same…”

[Mercedes points to herself.]

“This woman right here is, was, and always will be the gatekeeper of the Bombshells Division. And, no, Jessie Salco, that’s my full-time job, not yours. Know your place, mamita.”

[Mercedes pauses for a moment to glance at her checklist before she looks back at the camera.]

“Now at Inception and on the first two Climax Control episodes of 2023, we saw a few surprise returns and some fresh new faces making their debuts. Some won, others loss, but just the same they all brought something to the table. How many of these newcomers will still be here in three months, six months, a year from now, is the real test because Sin City Wrestling has a reputation as one of the toughest places around, and for good reason. To survive here, you need a little bit of luck and a whole lot of talent. Those who debuted last year at least got their feet wet.

“Now let’s see how they do at the far end of the pool.”

[Mercedes gives the camera a dismissive wave of her hand, the excitement in her voice remains as she continues.]

“As for me, I’m anxious to get back in the ring after how Inception didn't exactly pan out, especially what was a title match I should have won easy. That said, this Sunday I get to makeup for my defeat with this contendership match against none other than Alicia Lukas and Roxi Johnson - two names who are part of the upper echelon of talent here in SCDub, and with good reason.

"You don't need to tell me how important this match is. Just ask my opponents, they'll tell you. I'm not going to make excuses, because I don't have any, but I’ll give credit where it's due. If I don’t walk out with the win, I guess we're going to find out if either Alicia or Roxi takes advantage of a golden opportunity, or it ends up as a wasted opportunity."

[Mercedes points to herself.]

"You’re probably asking where do I go from here after Inception. The short answer? I'm not "going" anywhere. I'm definitely not getting bent out of shape just because a pay-per-view match didn't go my way. I'm better than that. Think I'm more than proven in this sport and I don't have to prove myself to anybody. My time will come again to contend for the world title. And looking at the roster, I don't think I'll be waiting very long.

"It's an express lane here.

“There’s no better place than here. There’s no better time than now.”

[She offers a nonchalantly shrug.]

“Now, Georgie Robertson is still kinda new, but she has had an okay start to her career. Being the new girl and all, I kinda had second thoughts about how she would do last year. She wasn’t good, she wasn’t bad. She was just okay. Then Inception happened. Georgie beat Roxi Johnson in what should be called an upset, because it is. On any given day, anybody can beat anybody. You know how hard it is to beat Roxi? OK, so it's more than that: Sure, Roxi did get by Krystal Wolfe last week, but the loss at Inception probably rocked her to her core, and while she will no doubt have an excuse ready why she got beat, her track record is better than anyone's during their time in SCW. Not to say I’m easily impressed most of the time, but I have to make an exception.”

[Mercedes brings her hands together for a slow, lifeless showing that was just as cutting.]

“With Alicia and Roxi, while familiarity breeds contempt, that's the least emotion I'm feeling this weekend."

[Mercedes shakes her head while mouthing the word “no.”]

"More like redemption. That's why this match is one where I'll be showing up.”

[Mercedes swipes a hand over her face. The once proud smile she had has transformed into a serious expression. It was time to address the matter of the opponents that stood across her from her in a serious light.]

“That I get to visit an arena I've already been to is a moot point. At Climax Control, I'm reigniting that fire and focusing all my energy because it's about time I get back to the potential I know I have. I'm willing to risk it all. I'm willing to put my cards on the table. I'm willing to do whatever as it takes to take down whoever is in front of me, and I'm not too picky. I know that I'm still a threat. Sunday won't be a lesson, it will be a reminder. At Climax Control, I hope Alicia and Roxi are prepared because I’ve been prepared.

“A woman who knows her worth is a dangerous one... when no one can use you, play you or get over on you, that makes you a threat. I am not a joke, I am not a punchline. I AM A THREAT.

"I may not be headlining the show. I may not be in the main event, I may not be one of the top stars here, yet, but I can promise you that I'm making this match worth the price of admission. It's up to everyone else to try and top it."

[Mercedes tucks her checklist under her arm again, then starts rubbing her hands expectantly.]

"So, Alicia, Roxi, I'll see you Sunday night for Climax Control."

[A pause is met as she starts speaking in Spanish.]

"Estar preparado para lo peor, esperar lo mejor."
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best."

“Y que la suerte está siempre en su favor.”
"And may the odds be ever in your favor."

And all is right with the world again.

That match with Jessie Salco sure was something, huh? She has to rank right up there as one of my toughest opponents….ever.

I’m joking, obviously. Losing to Jessie would have been embarrassing. Ever since she ended my Bombshell Roulette Championship reign many moons ago, I promised myself I would never allow Jessie to pin my shoulders to the mat again in a Sin City Wrestling ring.

Maybe she came into our match a little unprepared. Perhaps she came in and overestimated me. Maybe she just wasn’t as focused after her cousin was attacked unprovoked by Melissa. Whatever the reason, yours truly got another victory at her expense, and I can’t say I feel bad about it. And why should I? Because Jessie tried downplaying my win to secure her insecurities? I did what I had to do. She would have done the same.

Sure, beating Jessie isn’t what anyone would make a big deal much less call a statement win, but would I have made the drive to Microsoft Theatre just to finish her off in, say, thirty seconds? You know what? Regardless of how it went down, that counts as a win at the end of the night - and my name etched again in the record books. Did I mention I earned my 80th career win in SCDub and became the first wrestler to reach 50 singles wins?

Not a bad night if I say so myself.

But as far as this week...

I’m facing Zoey Lukas for the first time, and I’m all for it. See, Zoey’s not like most girls. Six foot one, one ninety five. Raw power. Agility. Tough as nails. So was Tempest. Believe me, I haven’t forgotten the morning after I stepped in the ring with her three times last year. She’s the reason I’m taking pain meds to this day.

Zoey probably didn’t enjoy losing her pay-per-view debut to Tempest last month at High Stakes and I definitely picked a bad week standing across the ring from her. I don’t stand a chance, I don’t even have a prayer. In her eyes, I’m not even an opponent.

I’m a ragdoll.

A chew toy.

A sacrifice.

A simple act of charity given by SCW.

Whatever momentum Zoey thought she had in her earlier wins in SCW vanished in thin air the moment she ended up staring up at the arena lights. She probably won’t enjoy what’s going to happen Sunday because I’m primed to ruin her Christmas holiday.

Sunday can't come soon enough. I'm waiting with baited breath for the moment I get the opportunity to step in the ring with another member of the Lukas family and wipe that condescending smirk off their face.

I've done it before, and I can do it again.

I'm going to be ready for Zoey.

Oh yes, indeed.

I’m glad we have the opener for Climax Control because there’s going be some real fireworks Sunday night.

[Even with how miserable 2022 has been for Mercedes Vargas, and even as she entered her recent match on the brink of a two-month winless drought, the Hall of Famer knew she would be alright.

Many things have changed in the Bombshells Division this year - for better or worse - but at least one thing has remained the same.

Mercedes Vargas is still Mercedes Vargas, and Jessie Salco is still Jessie Salco.]

M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
SCW | BOMBSHELL
I must be owning stock around here, because it's starting to feel like I own Jessie Salco.

[Much as fans of the Heavy Metal Bombshell might not want to hear it, Mercedes’ retort couldn't have been more accurate. With a chance to bounce back from Salco’s win over her and Bea Barnhart in a Bombshell Roulette Championship number one contender’s match several weeks ago, Mercedes continued her mastery over her fellow Hall of Famer in singles matches, dropping Salco to 1-5 against her and a fourth straight loss. Vargas hasn’t lost to Salco since she was beat for the Bombshell Roulette Championship in April 2016 at Blaze of Glory, which seems like light years ago.]

M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
SCW | BOMBSHELL
Like how Tom Brady always beats the Buffalo Bills or how Aaron Rodgers torments the Chicago Bears every year, I own Jessie Salco.

I was planning on maybe recreating the Aaron Rodgers moment when he was yelling at Bears fans after he ran for a game-sealing touchdown last year, but that would be adding insult to injury, especially after Jessie’s cousin was assaulted by Melissa earlier in the night.

[Unfortunately for Jessie, Mercedes might not be done with her. These rivals have shared the six-sided ring at least once since Mercedes joined SCW back in 2013.]

M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
SCW | BOMBSHELL
I don't think this is my last one against Jessie, but I have enjoyed every single one of them. Looking forward to our future match in 2023, hopefully.

[For now, Mercedes’ future, at least her immediate one, now turns to one Zoey Lukas, her opponent Sunday on the milestone 350th episode of Climax Control, the final SCW event of 2022 and the go-home show leading up to Inception VI in mid-January, where Vargas challenges Kayla Richards for her Bombshell Internet Championship in a return match from Climax Control 346 last month, which Vargas loss by submission.

If anything, Zoey Lukas is far from a warmup match, or a pushover for that matter. She also had two things going for her: she towers over most of the Bombshells at a statuesque six feet one (the only one taller is Tempest, who Lukas lost to recently at High Stakes XII on Halloween eve, at six foot three), and she’s the younger sister of former three-time Bombshell Champion Alicia Lukas.]

M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
SCW | BOMBSHELL
I’m going to have my work cut out for me against Zoey Lukas, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I never backed down from a challenge before, and I’m not about to start now. Zoey thinks she can exceed expectations at my expense?

[Mercedes spreads her arms wide, obviously a clear invitation and challenge.]

Tráelo.
Bring it.

[Split screen. Mercedes is driving while Irma is on the phone from her house. Mercedes watched Irma with the dabs and strokes coming together into a nature scene. Irma continues adding paint on top of still-wet paint.]

Irma: Hey, how did your match go?

.::MERCEDES::..
Wouldn't you like to know?

.::IRMA::..
Uh, yeah, that's why I asked.

.::MERCEDES::..
I won, for the first time in a long time. It’s like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Colors are brighter. Coffee Is richer. The sky is bluer.

.::IRMA::..
 Funny, because you were making a big deal out of it the moment the card was announced.

.::MERCEDES::..
Even the best loses matches sometimes. Like I said, it's nothing to worry about. I’m sure I’ll be back in a title scene sooner than I think. I’m heading to San Francisco.

.::IRMA::..
 Oh?

.::MERCEDES::..
 I don’t always go to San Francisco. But when I do, I like to sing the jingle to Rice-A-Roni. Don’t judge me.

.::IRMA::..
It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive.

.::MERCEDES::..
What are you up to?

.::IRMA::..
Another art exhibition this weekend and I got a few samples I want to show off. I think I’m getting this water color ice cold. How’s the memoir coming?

.::MERCEDES::..
Slowly, but surely. Like my career.

[Irma gives a long hard look at Mercedes. She wanted to say something, but decided to hold her tongue. Getting up, she mutes her TV playing The Joy of Painting.]

.::IRMA::..
 I know this book was really hard for you. How are you dealing with everything?

.::MERCEDES::..
I don’t know. I mean, there’s still so much to tell, so much to do. I’ve been putting it off for so long. I’m coming up on another contract year, so I have a lot of decisions to mark.

.::IRMA::..
We just show you how, but you make the decisions. When you have this much power, you make the decisions. There’s beauty in every tree and bush. Just take the time to look at them.

.::MERCEDES::..
That was deep. I guess I never thought about it that way. Who told you that one?

.::IRMA::..
The Joy of Painting. Bob Ross should be a philosopher.

[Cloudy skies. Mercedes Vargas, hidden behind a pair of sunglasses, is standing in front of the Paul Smith wall, the famous big pink wall where people post photos and selfies. Mercedes is shown thumbing through some glossy magazine. As if on cue, the SCW Hall of Famer looks up and unconsciously puts the magazine away and leans over towards the camera, grinning. Her hair has clearly been done up here too, messy curls pinned back in a half updo and ordained with a black rose tucked on the left side of her hair.]

“So, my recent match two weeks ago was a success. I'm the number one contender for the Bombshell Internet Championship again. And it's not like I really need it because let's face it, I can get a title shot for any title against anyone and at any time, but it's a nice feeling all the same. In just a few weeks, it's going to be me and the great and powerful Kayla Richards in Stockton, California. But that’s in five weeks.”

[Mercedes holds up five fingers.]

“The date is set and the time has come. This weekend, all roads leads to San Francisco, California for Climax Control 350. Climax Control 350 is a landmark for Sin City Wrestling. Climax Control 350 marks 350 episodes of yours truly bringing smiles to your faces. I’ve been known for making memorable moments and history over the years. I've been on the milestone 75th, 100th 125th, 175th, 200th, 250th, and 300th episodes of Climax Control. Did you think I would miss this night? Not for nothing would I miss this night.

“When I said last week that I wanted a match for the milestone 350th episode of Climax Control, I have to say I was surprised when I came across this weekend‘s card. Not so much that I’m opening the show - wherever I am on the card is required viewing - but that I get none other than Alicia’s younger sister. The fact that Zoey has beaten the likes of Jessie Salco and Samantha Marlowe says a lot about her talent in the ring. Zoey is related to one of the very best professional wrestlers not just in Sin City Wrestling but in the game today, and for good reason. Alicia is celebrated in SCW for what she’s accomplished: a three-time Bombshell Champion; she once held the records for the longest singles reign and most singles defenses; the first woman and one of only two to win both Wrestler and Woman of the year. Again, for good reason.”

[Mercedes raises a finger in a wait-a-minute gesture as a smile crosses her face.]

“But, see, Mercedes Vargas has never been known as a slouch, or a wallflower, or someone who backs away from a challenge. I live for matches like these, Zoey. Because no matter how high the stakes, no matter the odds, no matter how intense the pressure, I always answer the bell. Come Sunday, the world will be watching and waiting and wondering if you can pull off an encore performance. And at the end of the night, they will have their answer.

“There are few better in the women’s division than yours truly so I must have done something right to earn this match. Every person who calls themselves a wrestling fan owe to themselves to get in the building to witness it all go down. Climax Control 350, the final SCW event of 2022 and the first time yours truly, Mercedes Vargas, will step in the ring with Zoey Lukas.

“It will be the first time, and the only time, I will once again make history by accomplishing something no woman has done before or since. And that is beating Alicia and Zoey Lukas in an SCW ring.

“You love to see it.

“Come for the action, stay for the drama. Don't blink, you might miss something.”

[Mercedes fluffs and straightens out her hair, lowering her voice just above a whisper.]

"Estar preparado para lo peor, esperar lo mejor. Y que la suerte está siempre en su favor.”
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. And may the odds be ever in your favor."

semana del 20 al 27 de noviembre de 2022

Losing happens to everyone. That’s just a fact of life. There are few things that are worse than losing. There are few things that are worse than losing to the same opponent. There are few things that are worse than losing to the same opponent multiple times.

Don't laugh.

That all happened to me at High Stakes.

I entered into a championship match expecting to leave once again with a title around my waist. For the fifth time now I left empty handed.

Don't laugh.

That all happened to me two weeks ago at Climax Control 346.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, but what do I have to be thankful for? First match of the new year, it was my fault why Goth and I lost the World Mixed Tag Team Championship at Inception back In January. 10 months later, I still don’t have a championship around my waist and I’m about to close this year title-less for the second time in three years. Despite the fact I managed to compete at every pay-per-view this year, break, tie or extend numerous records and once again wrestled the most matches this year.

At this point, no one thinks I can do anything. I had no business losing to Kayla Richards two weeks ago. Don’t get me wrong, Kayla is talented and she felt the need to tell everybody she is that good, if her win-loss record is anything to go by. She made sure to get herself booked that night for a reason. I don’t think she was aiming to defend her title for the second time in three weeks, but anything to get her from sitting in catering can only be a good thing, right?

Kayla’s the champion so she was obviously the favorite. Me, I’m the dark horse. It does drives me to go out there and prove to people how good I am. This wasn’t about Kayla Richards. This was more about me shutting her up than about taking her title, but I was perfectly fine killing two birds with one stone. After all, making history and continuing my legacy is what I do. It’s just that I’ve lost so many title opportunities this year, that they all seem to blend together. I know what Kayla can do and I know what I can do and while I’ve had the worst luck in title matches this year, I’ll be damned if I don’t take it all back.

If there is anyone who was bona fide, certified, and qualified to put a stop to Kayla’s title reign, SCW management found the right one. If there was any Bombshell Kayla thought she could intimidate, she found the wrong one, and if there was any Latina who was going to be the next Bombshell Internet Champion, they got the best one.

I've accomplished so much in SCW already as a multi-champion, Grand Slam Champion, Hall of Famer - and the list goes on and on if you want to go to Wikipedia yourself - that it’s easy forget that it's been nine years since I debuted.

If I somehow got past Kayla, that would be a miracle in and of itself. But then again, I've never doubted myself either. For someone who was said to be in a midlife crisis, past my prime and washed up, I think I've proven a lot of doubters wrong over the years. My resume in SCW and longevity says a lot and more often than not it tends to drown out the haters. It was supposed to be my time to prove the doubters wrong one more time because I had my date with destiny.

I planned to show Kayla why she shouldn’t mess with the La Campeon de Champeon because I planned on ending this year with gold around my waist.

I failed. Again.

They say you’re only as good as your last match and it’s not how you start but how you finish, both which I find true. I lost at High Stakes, I lost at Climax Control 346, I had two weeks to get over it and now this Sunday I'm going to go take care of business. I'm going to go fix that. I'm going to right the ship. I'm going to find a way to win my next match and end this losing streak I’ve been on since June. That's what I'm trying to do, that's what I'm going to do. I'm wrestling again this weekend, getting an opportunity to finally put this losing streak behind me while continuing to assault the SCW record books.

And something tells me Jessie Salco will be the   perfect tonic.

~~~
[The first two fallout shows following High Stakes has come and gone, but for Mercedes Vargas the sting of losing was still raw even two weeks removed from her latest setback at Climax Control 346 and nearly a month removed from the final supercard of 2022. In what was supposed to be a get-right kind of match and an opportunity to finally exorcise the demons that was this supercard and final claiming her first win over an opponent who has seemingly had her number as of late, none of those things happened as Mercedes once again found herself starting up at the arena lights to Krystal Wolfe and submitted to Kayla Richards, failing to win the Bombshell Internet Championship.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: What am I doing? Seriously, what the hell is wrong with me? The first half of the year, I did okay, but now? I’ve won only won once since the second half of the year started. I thought things were starting to get better, but things are just getting worse. I don’t know what’s more embarrassing: that I haven’t won at High Stakes in eight years, that Krystal got the best of me, again, or that I can’t win a title match to save my life. Ugh!
[2022 is again shaping up to be another lost year for the Hall of Famer and it’s abundantly clear that every loss is testing her patience.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: Bad enough I hear people keep telling me to call it a career just because I’m not stringing along wins like I’m used to. Now I have to hear people like that mealy mouth Aussie sullen my good name? The only reason Krystal got to live and tell about is by the grace of God and because I’m a nice person.
[Mercedes holds up her hand in a wait-a-minute-gesture]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: Maybe not all the time, but most of the time.
[While Krystal wasn’t scheduled to compete on the first Climax Control following her triumph that weekend, even Mercedes knew better that Krystal would likely show up in Long Beach just to gloat. Kayla too. Probably. Of course, her upcoming match against Jessie Salco this weekend was now priority. At least changing the subject would get her mind off her most recent setbacks.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: What did I think the Hall of Fame and SCW Year-End Awards? Of all the people who got in the Hall of Fame, I’m surprised Jessie got in, but then I’m not. Remember when I said that it was only a matter of time that she would get in. I called it. The only thing I’m disappointed in is they didn’t also give her personal section for most career losse, but I guess we’re supposed to make the nominees look good now.
[Leaning back in her arm chair, she’s amused at it all.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: Truth is, I’m happy for Jessie. I still hate her, but I’m happy for her. Jessie’s Hall of Fame moment might as well be her World Series, Super Bowl or even World Cup. You could say it might be her Bombshell Championship moment since, you know, she won’t be winning that title anytime soon.
[Jessie Salco had a chance of making history as the first five-time Bombshell Roulette Champion, but Ariana Angelos had other plans. Salco’s golden opportunity ended up as a wasted opportunity. When word got to Mercedes about Jessie’s comments about her ahead of their clash Sunday, her tone shifts from friendly and chatty to slightly more serious. She stops nodding and smiling.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: As far as Sunday goes, I can't wait for Climax Control. Sunday is about taking a stand, it's about making a statement. It's about sending a message that I don’t take a backseat to nobody and that includes, Jessica Marie Salco.
If there is anyone who runs their mouth the way she does, I have yet to find them. This match is going to be fun. And by fun, I mean Jessie’s getting crushed.
[She goes quiet again, a small chuckle as she slightly looks down before raising her head again at the camera.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: Anything less would be uncivilized.
“There's nothing routine about our holiday routines.”
“We’re the only family where we cook turkey for Halloween, give presents on Thanksgiving, and hand out candy on Christmas. Make it make sense, Carmen!
“About as much sense as we’re out here in the hot sun, running around after a ball?”
[Mercedes is trading volleys with Carmen at the Santa Monica Tennis Center. By her own admission, Mercedes wasn’t too bad at the sport as she has beaten Carmen on an occasion or two, but she almost always won in the end. Mercedes was keeping up with Carmen swing for swing.]
CARMEN:
What got you pissed off today?
MERCEDES:
Let's just say that I had a lot of anger to work off. I’m fine.
[Mercedes stumbles, almost throws her racket away, but was able to backpedal to return a low serve. Mercedes and Carmen kept sending the ball back and forth over the net. A few people saunters on the court to watch the match. Carmen's forehand shot nearly caught Mercedes off guard, but she volleyed the ball right back.]
CARMEN:
Mercedes.
MERCEDES:
We're spending Thanksgiving with family. I don't know why we do this every year, it's annoying. Plus, they normally spend the holidays with us. Why do we have to go over there?
[Carmen laughs.]
MERCEDES:
Have you come to laugh at me in my miserable state?
CARMEN:
Nobody is forcing you. You want to go, fine. If you don’t, that’s fine too. We’ve been through this before.
MERCEDES:
I don't think I can do this anymore.
CARMEN:
Don't let this become something you'll later regret.
[Carmen sends the ball out of play. Mercedes sighs as she retrieves it.]
MERCEDES:
I’m out of regrets. My career is at a crossroads and yet I know I'm a competitor. I come into every match knowing I’m the best.
CARMEN:
What about desire, heart, the will to win...
MERCEDES:
I have a lot going for me, I guess humility is not one of them.
[Carmen trots back to her side of the court and bounces the ball with her racket before she tossing it in the air and hitting it. Backpedaling, Mercedes hit a return topspin shot which Carmen sends back over the net. Victory was hers, and she was going to rub it in, whether Mercedes cousin liked it or not.]
MERCEDES:
Juego, set y partido!
[Game, set, match!]
CARMEN:
Good game.
[Mercedes was upset, whether that had to do with the loss or her stubbornness made no difference. She plays it cool, like she’s being interviewed after a match in SCW.
Working the weekend as usual, Mercedes had bigger issues to worry about. Namely, a fellow Hall of Famer who as of recently beat her in their last match.
Revenge is a dish best served cold. That Mercedes and Jessie were facing each again couldn’t have happened sooner. She was in a mood to get out some of this frustration from last show.
She only hoped that SCW was ready for some fireworks Sunday night.
Present Day ♦ L O S A N G E L E S, C A L I F O R N I A
[Mercedes Vargas kicks back in the living room of her Los Angeles residence. Under the brim of a bucket hat with the Argentina national team logo, the two-time SCW Hall of Famer sits down comfortably in an armchair while polishing her nails with a nail file.
“I’m out of answers. 2022 was supposed to be the year I put it all together, the year I was supposed to get a good run going and finally achieve my ultimate goals of winning a championship for the first time in a long time.
“I remember when I got off to a rough start, which wasn’t unsurprisingly surprising. I was more than ready to throw in the towel. Not that I was never too far from the title picture.
“I've been in Sin City Wrestling since 2013. I’ve practically done it all here. But it took something to realize that maybe just maybe I’ve reached my moment of clarity. That being said, I think it’s time for a career change, and after the losses to Kayla and Krystal, I thought a long time about this.”
[She covers her face in shame. The respective losses to Krystal Wolfe and Kayla Richards was something she did not expect, an upset, if you will. Nonetheless, upsets seems to be happening to her a lot more often than she cared to admit. With a sigh, Mercedes looks up again at the camera.]
“I may soon regret this, but at this point I don’t really care anymore.”
[A digital watch alarm beeps. Mercedes glances at it before looking back at the camera.]
“Time for my Only Fans. And the only thing I’ll have on is the vacuum.”
[We see Mercedes as she was before, still fully clothed, except this time we see her struggling to keep her hair from her face. Pan to the right to the hum of several fans operating at once. A pair of small table fans are next to a portable tower fan. Above these, a pedestal fan lets her hair blow upwards slightly.
Mercedes is running a vacuum over a Persian carpet. As if on cue, she powers off the fans and the vacuum, sets the latter aside, and turns to the camera.]
“Well, Jessie. Here we are again. Just another random Bombshell match on Climax Control. After a while they start to feel the same. You beat me, it means nothing except furthering your career, and adding another defeat to my record. But at least you got booked again this week, at least you have another victory ahead of our match, you build a little momentum on your ongoing pursuit of the Bombshell Championship, though I'm surprised you’re not one of the very few that's challenging Masque de Lune, considering that there’s very few Bombshells who wouldn’t stand a chance against her.
“Let's face it, 2022 isn’t the result I wanted and it’s certainly something I'm not readily to admit nor am I happy about. But make no mistake about it, Jessie, I'm not some newcomer. I'm not Bella Madison or Bea Barnhart. You know that I'm going into our match Sunday and keep up with you from the opening bell until the very end. Competition makes me stronger...and I like to think I play to my strengths.
“They say familiarity breeds contempt, and I’m really starting to believe that because we seem to run into each other more often than I care to admit. Like Thanksgiving, it happens every year. What I find comical, even hilarious, Jessie, is the fact that you of all people can talk down to me. Yeah, I know that I haven’t been winning lately, I know you’re one of the few Bombshells who have been here for over a decade, I know you recently became a Hall of Famer. Thing is, Jessie, for as long as we’ve been in SCW together and we’ve both have had lengthy careers, not to mention that we’re both now in the Hall…”
[Mercedes shows off her pair of Hall of Fame rings.]
“You think this gives you a pass, gives you any leeway, to disrespect me? No, no, no. That’s just not going to fly, mamita. Criticise me all you want, but I’ve been just as loyal and successful in SCW as you. Worked hard and got over on my own. Came back from concussions and nearly having my career ended several times. The Bombshell Division you see today, I played a huge part in that. I made an impact. To do that, you have to be a leader, a role model, and the best. There’s no need to look any further, I’m the woman who have it all— and there’s nobody good enough to take it from me.
“If you want to talk about dedication, if you want to find one of the pillars of the women’s division, you don’t have to go very far. I’ve been on practically every show. Whether on Climax Control or at pay-per-view; whether I was featured in the opening match, the mid-card or main event, there was a good chance my name was on the card and a very good chance you would see me in the ring.
“I'm too important in this company to ever be considered a stepping stone. I’ve reached milestones, shattered records, and dominated opponents since I joined the roster. With or without a title, I've proven without a doubt that I'm the most accomplished talent in the women's division and there is not a person alive on this roster that can say that I don’t have what it takes to become champion.
“You may be tired of us seeing each again and again, but I get a kick out of it. The fact that I have almost twice as many wins over you is one. That your wins over me were in tag and multi-woman matches is another. Oh, and the lone singles win over me when you took my Bombshell Internet Championship - you know the one win you keep beating that drum about - was six years ago. You know how many times I’ve beat you one-on-one?”
[Mercedes holds up four fingers.]
“Four times, including each of the last three times you stepped up to me. I put you down in a street fight last year, Jessie. Do you seriously think you’re going to beat me again?”
[Clicking her tongue partly out of dismay and partly out of the sheer wonder of it all, Mercedes' smile faded as she briefly shakes her head, a look of disappointment is there too.]
“Oh sweet summer child.”
[Mercedes begins to draw a graph on a mini whiteboard.]
“The more you fuck around, the more you’re going to find out.”
[Mercedes makes a horizontal line on the whiteboard, adding arrows on the ends of the line to indicate it is a number line. She puts the label "FIND OUT" to the right of the line to indicate the x axis. She marks the center of the line with a vertical tick mark and label it 0. This is the origin of the graph.]
“I’ve been blessed to have competed in over 200 matches in Sin City Wrestling, another faucet that you and I have in common, Jessie. Just so happens we’ve been involved in 25 matches in that time. Almost half were in multiwoman matches. A few of them saw either of us won, and that’s what I’m focused on. In the 14 matches between us that were important, you FOUND OUT that I was not to be underestimated.
“Nevertheless, you persisted. For example, our first ever one-on-one match, or the time I beat you and Amy Santino in retaining the Bombshell Roulette Championship. Oh, and that time me and Delia Darling beat you two in a tag match in rather short order.”
[Mercedes holds up a finger in a wait-a-minute gesture]
“Now, depending on who you ask, some might say you were a glutton for punishment. Others might say you were too dumb to live. Still others might say you’re beyond help. But then, it doesn’t really matter what the outcome was because at the end of the day, I guess you and I are destined to fight forever. When you think about it, no matter the year or the type of match, Jessie, as long as we’re still breathing we’re always going to find our names opposite on a match card.”
[She makes equally spaced tick marks on the rest of the x axis. She labels the tick marks from 1 to 10 on the right side of the zero. She put the label "FUCK AROUND" above the line then make equally spaced tick marks on the y axis. She then labels the tick marks from 2 to 20 above the 0.]
“Now for the most important part of the my FAFO graph.”
[Mercedes draws a line which intersects her graph diagonally.]
“I think we all figured out how much we found out and how much we can find out. For example, the three Ultimate X Over the matches we’ve competed in our careers. I’m going to label this a level of six...”
[She draws a circle around six on the FIND OUT portion on the graph.]
“So I draw a horizontal to my gradient line, then I’m go straight down to the FUCK AROUND line.]
[She draws said line.]
“So this tells me how much did Jessie fucked around to find out what she needed to find out.“
[Mercedes repeats this motion drawing a horizontal line from the ten tick mark to the vertical line and then draws a straight line to the ten on the y part of her line].
“So you see, Jessie, the more you fuck around, the more you’re going to find out. Not that finding out isn’t always a bad thing. It could be good, it could be bad. But to find out sometimes you gotta take those risks in life and fuck around! Or you will never find out!”
[Mercedes then draws a circle at the zero part of the graph.]
“But also if you stay down here and you never fuck around - in other words, you forfeiting our match Sunday - you’re never going to find out. The choice is an easy one, Jessie.
“But then, I’ve never known you to take good advice.”
OK, I’m going to say something I would gladly die on a hill: Roxi Johnson was a boring Bombshell Champion.
The women’s division was boring having Roxi as Bombshell Champion because there are many other great women on the roster, not just her. The commentators built her up as someone who represented the division, but I know there are other great contenders out there who can do that and better. And better.
[Mercedes raises her index finger for a moment, considering the thought then shakes her head.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
SCW | BOMBSHELL
Don’t get me wrong, I wasn't rooting for Masque. Roxi was nothing special in my eyes. She had her moments, but the only reason she she won matches is because her opponents made mistakes and she made them pay for it. Out of all the defenses she had, I'm the only one who made her work in retaining. I took her to the limit. Masque took Roxi off her game, got in her head, made her make mistakes, got her frustrated and it was wonderful to see. Credit where it’s due, Masque had focus, a good gameplan, and that made the difference.
Far as I’m concerned, this needed to happen. Now that we're saved from the straightjacket that was Roxi’s reign, it's now a level playing field and there can be other champions, which is good for business and the division as a whole.
I said Roxi’s reign would be mercifully over, and it turns out I was right.
Happy days are here again.
CAMERAMAN: So will you be sending Masque de Lune a Hallmark card this year?
If I’m not caught up by The Rapture by then, I’ll get back to you on that.
Beating Candy at Violent Conduct? I couldn’t be happier. She can go back to her stupid glitter for all I care. Nothing is going to dampen my mood after the supercard, and you want to know why? Because I finally have her name on my checklist.
[Mercedes presents her clipboard and sure enough, it’s been updated with Candy’s name in bold letters followed by a check mark.]
I think I'm going to be enjoying this match for a long, long, time. You love to see it.
[A gym. Several training equipment of all sorts surround the facility, from the modern to the highly advanced. In the center of the white-washed and wood tiled room is a wrestling/boxing ring.
[The gym is practically empty, although it’s late in the afternoon. However, one person is actually getting a workout today, and that person happens to be none other than Mercedes Vargas seen here in a kickboxing training session with a partner.]
.::ETHAN::..
How did it go?
.::MERCEDES::..
Not bad. Well, better than I had hope.
.::ETHAN::..
It's progress, at least.
[Jab, Cross, Uppercut, Duck.
Mercedes keeps in mind the workout combination.]
[The camera turns pulls back and we see for the first time Ethan, who was standing by with Thai pads taking in the contact.]
.::MERCEDES::..
What? No witty remark? Nothing clever to say?
.::ETHAN::..
I’m trying to be on my best behavior. Besides, you got a match this weekend.
.::MERCEDES::..
Don’t remind me.
[The trainer feeds a straight right. Mercedes her head outside to slip the punch; and then, follows up with a left hook to the body.]
.::MERCEDES::..
Masque is good. But what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.
.::ETHAN::..
I know you're trying your damnedest to be tough... but the truth is, you're terrified.
.::MERCEDES::..
I can't hide anything from you, can I? I guess I’m not a very convincing liar. I'm fucking terrified. And you would be too. Did I mention this is life or death?
.::ETHAN::..
There's no turning back now. She seems...dangerous.
.::MERCEDES::..
She’s perfectly safe! Safe-ish.
[Next is a kick, punch combination. She does this in a rhythmic approach with no pause or break in between strikes.]
.::ETHAN::..
Merce, she almost killed Amber Ryan. Probably would have done the same to Team Hero if she had the chance. Now that she holds the top, who’s to stop her?
.::MERCEDES::..
Me.
[Mercedes goes with a straight left punch, along with a right kick. Then, right away go into a straight right punch, with a straight left punch, into a left back kick.  She does this in an endless combination and with smoothness and fluidity.]
.::MERCEDES::..
I’m not going to be womanhandled by Masque. If she’s going to leave still champion, she won’t need to kill me.
[Mercedes goes with a roundhouse kick, which her trainer ducks just in time.]
.::MERCEDES::..
But she’s going to have come pretty damn close.
.::ETHAN::..
I think that’s enough practice for today.
Las Vegas, Nevada
10:20 PM
O brave new world that has such people in it!
[The camera shows a Porsche 911 driving through the streets of Las Vegas. Along the way we see various people working and living their lives. The car drives past buildings, suburbs, a playground, a lake, and more. The voice over continues.]
Las Vegas, Nevada. It's called by many names - The Gambling Capital of the World. Sin City. The Jewel of the Desert. Or just simply, Vegas.
[A series of quick cuts showing the outside exterior of Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino at night, a up-close shot of a monitor from a virtual slot machine, a crowd full of people dancing to music inside Studio 54, and a newlywed couple renewing their vows at a wedding chapel as an Elvis impersonator looks on.]
To those who live here, it's home. To those who visit, it's a paradise. For me, though?
[We cut to inside the moving car. Mercedes Vargas is in the passenger side listlessly turning the pages of a magazine as Jorge, her brother, is behind the wheel while bobbing his head to the car radio.]
It's an almost common occurrence. After being overseas for over two months, I’m glad to finally be back in Sin City.
[illuminated skyscrapers, neon signs, and various hotels line every street as Mercedes looks out at tourist enjoying the night.]
After all, what’s not to like about being in Vegas?
Present Day ♦ L A S V E G A S, N E V A D A
[REC•]
[Our scene opens to a visual of a parish at the end of a boulevard, just at the break of dawn. A gust of wind sweeps debris around these orphaned streets before the camera pans on  Mercedes Vargas sat on the steps of the quaint house of worship. She was conservatively dressed wearing a black and white high-collared blouse and a knee length black skirt.
“Here is the church. Here is the steeple. Open the doors and…wait where are the people?”
[Mercedes gives off a nonchalant shrug.]
“Never let it be said that the good paying fans at every SCW event aren't thoroughly entertained. Look what happened at Violent Conduct. Sure, there was the fire breathers, the trapeze artists, the magicians, the lion tamers, those people who get shot out of cannons, a picture show or two. Pretty sure they really had the ooohs and aaaahs going during the freak show portion during the supercard. Oh, and every title changed hands - who had that one on their bingo card - Oh, but this vaudeville show isn't over yet. This weekend, the best is saved for last.
“Sunday night, the people will stand in line, get their tickets, and pack out Gold Coast Hotel and Casino for a Climax Control they will never forget. Come one, come all! Hurry, hurry, step right up! It's the greatest show in town. Seven acts under one roof for a single admission. And for one night only, see the one they call Masque de Lune completely annihilate another no-name, no-talent Bombshell right here in Las Vegas, Nevada! Guaranteed to be amazed. Don't let this moment pass you by!”
[Mercedes keeps a level expression but we can tell she’s also having a little fun with this.]
“They have billed the main event as a singles contest, but read your program again. They won't be expecting a match. No! What they will get is a public execution live on television. Looks like yours truly is first in line to challenge Masque de Lune for the Bombshell Championship and I’ll be honest here, I can’t wait. When Masque beat Roxi in Mumbai, India, she became the one in Roxi’s 8-1. Bye-bye undefeated streak, bye-bye title reign.”
[Mercedes hasn’t completely forgotten when she last challenged Roxi a few weeks ago at the go-home show. The Argentine only got more scathing from there on the now former champion.]
“I guess that means Roxi learned something on two week ago. Because when you set yourself up as untouchable like she was, the fall is going to be that much more painful when she realizes that she was beaten inside of the ring. 1-2-3.”
[Mercedes holds up three fingers to remind everyone of the humiliating defeat Roxi had suffered against the Bombshell newcomer.]
“Roxi had a good run. But that gut feeling she had, that uneasy feeling she was talking about ahead of her match? It wasn’t butterflies, it was the pure dread that she was going to lose the Bombshell Championship to someone that was much better than her. Roxi should have known better the moment Masque was named number one contender that her fate was sealed.
“Of course, now, things are different. I know a lot of the Bombshells are wishing they were in my shoes right now - well, come to think of it, I’m sure if they had to face Masque, most of the girls would probably call in sick - but let’s face it, when it comes to being the One-Woman Dynasty of SCW, they have pretty big shoes to fill.
My career is almost beyond comparison, easily, easily, one of the most incredible in SCW history. That can’t be argued.
“So after the Violent Conduct event, I’m sure Mark Ward and Christian Underwood met in their little office and I wish I was a fly in the room to hear what they were saying. I can imagine that conversation going, “Well, hot damn. That was a great main event. Now we have to talk about Masque’s first defense. We need to put her across the ring from somebody who will challenge her, somebody who will take her to the limit, somebody who the fans want to see her tangle with.’
“Well, somebody has to face Masque for her first defense. Don't know if she was waiting for her match with Roxi in the rematch this weekend, but I've never backed down from a challenge, and I'm not about to start now. Competition makes me stronger, and I like to think I play well to my strengths. Masque de Lune versus Mercedes Vargas? I don't think anyone could say no to that. In my eyes, that’s no punishment, that's a dream match. As far as the main event, it’s not because I think I deserve it; and it’s not because I think that I have another opportunity to make history; it’s because I’m going to finally put to bed and put to rest any doubt that Mercedes Vargas can be world champion in Sin City Wrestling. The Bombshell Championship means something in the hands of The One-Woman Dynasty.
“So as Climax Control 241 is fast approaching, I’m sure there’s a lot of you out there wondering, ‘Hey, Mercedes. How is your match with Masque de Lune so special? How will it stand out from the great matches from Violent Conduct, especially that main event, the matches Sunday at Climax Control or any of the matches you’ve had in your SCW career, now 200 plus matches and counting?’
“Well, one one side there’s Masque. She’s cold, calculating, and someone who will stop at nothing, and even go beyond that, to take out every person standing in their way. Pretty soon, there will be no one left. She’s lost only twice, Roxi’s the only woman to pin her shoulders to the mat, and Masque has defeated a good third of the roster, including our Paragon of Justice. Masque is practically the second coming of Amber Ryan, only she’s wearing a mask and have a prosthetic hand.
“And then on the other side, there’s little ole me. Nine-year experience in SCW, two-time SCW Hall of Famer, a 14-time title holder, the most decorated wrestler in SCW history, the first ever Queen for a Day, the one who has wrestled the most overall and pay-per-view matches, the one with the longest consecutive pay-per-view appearance streak going. I could go on.
Masque is having the career of a lifetime. She won her first championship, she put Amber Ryan on the shelf, and, most recently, she finally beat Roxi Johnson and captured the Bombshell Championship in one fell swoop - and this is just in her first seven months.
I’ve been called a lot of names in SCW. Arrogant, conceited, overrated, selfish. A pushover isn’t one of them. When people look at what I’ve done in my career, they are filled in awe and wonder. Even now as I’m still breaking records and winning championships. Speaking of, it’s been a while since I last held one around my waist, but I’m planning to right the ship and make that a reality. Go ahead and ask the women I’ve beat for championships. The list is pretty long.
“Something you’ll notice about Masque is that she loves the element of surprise. It’s how she got to Amber, it’s how she got to Keira and Roxi. Now that Masque is champion, she’s now the prey. Not knowing who will come for her next, or in this case, who will come for her first.  Against any other opponent, the only way Masque loses that title is someone starting a Change.org petition. Come Sunday, I’m going to make sure Masque’s first defense will also be her last.
“The sky is the limit. That Masque reached it in so little time is impressive. Sunday, I have nothing to lose because I have no limits. On that note, I know how much Masque is looking forward to crushing another talent under her boot. It must be nice to know that even after coming off a convincing win at the recent pay-per-view, there's always another martyr coming her way. The one thing I am not is a martyr. So don't ask me for whom the bell tolls, because if it is for me, I'll answer it. I will not go gentle into that good night, at least not without a fur coat, boots, and a baseball hat. The forecast is supposed to be below fifty, I heard."
[Her tone is overly enthusiastic.]
“Masque’s reputation proceeds her. My reputation for overcoming the odds, even more so. And since we'll be in Vegas, that is some pretty long odds and a sure bet that she’ll be favored. I've been fortunate to have faced a lot of crazies in my career to know that unstable people are probably the most dangerous opponent staring across from you in the ring. After all, people fear what they don't understand. You can't define something that can't be defined. But then, you can't break something that can't be broken. I cannot be broken, Masque. Beaten, yes, but not broken. You pride yourself on intimidation, mind games, and fear, and there are more than a few who are spooked by you once in a while. I'm not one of them. There's nothing that you can conjure up in the dark recesses of your mind that will even make me bat an eye. So you put on your best top hat, make sure that mascara doesn't run, and you best bring every one of your parlor tricks, sweetheart. I’m coming to take away YOUR title and if I have to rip off that prosthetic hand and beat you with it, I will.
“I’ve had a few title opportunities slip through my fingers this year, I’m a little surprised this match fell in my lap. You have to take opportunities when you get them, so here I am. Some people are probably thinking that I'm only in this match to make Masque look good, or it could be that this match is only important because I'm in it. To me, it doesn't matter whether this is a dark match, the opening match, the mid-card, or the main event, just so long as it ends with Masque getting pinned or submitted.
Last time we met, nobody won. That won’t be good enough this time.
But that doesn't mean this can't be a one-woman show. Puedo bailar, puedo cantar, toco un poco el piano. Hago de todo.
If Masque wants a performance, I'll give her one that she will never forget. One night. One match. One last opportunity.
That’s all I have left. And that’s one of the many reasons why I can't fail again. Twice I was so close and yet so far. Twice I've let this opportunity slipped from my fingers. The third time isn't going to be the charm, the third time isn't where I'm going to strike out. The third time is where I'm going to win and I'm prepared to go at any lengths to have that title around my waist. I see the glass as half-full.
In the eyes of others, seeing Mercedes Vargas as the new Sin City Wrestling Bombshell Champion seems impossible, some would say even improbable.
I'm going to make that inevitable.
Come for the action, stay for the drama. Don't blink, you might miss something.
"Estar preparado para lo peor, esperar lo mejor."
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best."
[Mercedes fluffs and straightens out her hair, lowering her voice just above a whisper.]
"Y que la suerte está siempre en su favor.”
“And may the odds be ever in your favor."
[Mercedes Vargas battled Seleana Zdunich to the bitter end, but the former Bombshell Roulette Champion got the better of the Hall of Famer once again, just after beating her for the first time in a long time in their prior meeting before last week. This wasn’t the result she wanted, especially after ending the then-winless streak she had against her rival, in a most satisfying way to end the slide.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: I've been replaying it on loop for the last week. Whatever I try to do, I can’t shake off Seleana. Now I have to see her again Sunday? Was I really that evil in my past life?
[Of course, the other major headline was Mercedes facing Candy at Violent Conduct in addition to Masque de Lune being named the number one contender to Roxi Johnson’s Bombshell Championship. When word got to Vargas about this, her tone shifts from friendly and chatty to slightly more serious. She stops nodding and smiling.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: Not sure why they would give Roxi an extra title defense before the supercard, but I don’t make the matches. See, I could have shown up in Mark and Christian’s office to plead my case for a title shot but I didn't have to. Obras son amores, que no buenas razones. Actions speaks louder than words. Seleana should count herself lucky she even had this win-and-your-in scenario but she’s done herself no favors. Now that she’s involved, there's no chance she’s walking out with the title. End of story. She talks all she wants about having my number. She can say whatever she wants, tell the people what they want to hear, but even she knows she needs divine intervention to walk out with the Bombshell Championship. It happened three years. It won’t happen Sunday.
Her golden opportunity is going to end up a wasted opportunity. I wouldn't miss it for the world.
[Now that she has an opportunity to dash Seleana’s hopes at a second Bombshell Championship reign. But what of Mercedes’ goal to claim her third world title overseas?]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: I won my first Bombshell Championship in Japan. I won my second in New Zealand. I would love to win my third in India. I guess you can say I love winning championships overseas, hmm?
[She goes quiet again, a small chuckle as she slightly looks down before raising her head again at the camera.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S: I can't wait for Climax Control. Hopefully, I can play spoiler, though I'm going to have my work cut out for me. Roxi isn’t a champion for a reason.”
[In the meantime, Vargas will be doing promotional work to hype up the supercard, though she's keeping those details close to the vest.]
“Well, if I told you, it wouldn't be much of a surprise now, would it? You're going to have to keep your eyes peeled. You never know where I might show up.”
Blog: Almighty Fire
semana del 14 al 21 de agosto de 2022
You know, they say good things come to those who wait. But it seems like I'm still waiting for a lot of things in Sin City Wrestling. I'm still waiting for my first pay-per-view win in quite awhile, still waiting for my first championship this year, still waiting for the respect I think I so richly deserve. Hell, even before this little match, I was assuming I was getting a one-on-one title match. Ahead of my match last week against Seleana, she got a little incentive. Didn’t matter if I didn’t last week, she didn’t deserve it in the first place, and I still stand by it.
Only a few actually make it to the very, very top in Sin City Wrestling, almost no one can do it for as long as I have. People come and go, give excuses, criticize the company. But who stay and work hard definitely become legend. I’m at a place in life where I’m most happy and I could go without winning another championship and still be more relevant that I am now.
And yet people don’t respect me. I don’t get the respect I deserve from Sin City Wrestling. I don’t get the respect I DESERVE from the fans. I don’t get the respect from anyone in the locker room. I mean, I went on to become the first and only Bombshell to win every championship available in the women’s division. I’ve won 14 championships in this very  company. I was and still am the only Bombshell to reach 10 championships in a career. I have main evented at Summer XXXTreme and at Climax Control several times. But I still get NO RESPECT. I’ve heard that people think I’m bitter about other Bombshells getting opportunities I should have got, and honestly, that never bothered me, not in the least.
When I began my career, who’s around now that was around then? I could count them on one hand. Who is left of the Mean Girls, the most dominating faction in the history of SCW?  Nobody. I am the one CONSTANT in Sin City Wrestling. I am a pioneer in the women’s division. Every Bombshell who comes down that entrance ramp eat at the table I set for them. I walked so others can run, I paved the road so they can travel, I set the bar so others can reach. Before I came here, that bar was lowered. Yet as I look at the state of the division, maybe I raised that bar a little too high.
Yet I get no respect. I worked for it, I earned it, I deserve it. But I don’t. Why is that? Is it because I don’t light up everyone’s Twitter timeline on Women Crush Wednesday like some desperate attention whore? Is it because I have never been left off a supercard since I joined the roster? Or is it because I didn’t just use wrestling as a stepping stone to bigger and better things such as, oh, I don’t know, acting or modeling. I didn’t just pay my dues in front of hundreds of thousands of people. I’ve paid my dues in front of millions of people.
I’ve accomplished everything that there is to accomplish in SCW, and in less time than most people in their careers. I started my career already as an international talent, and now, I’m a bonafide legend. I don’t put my life on the line every night for your approval, much less your entertainment. Is that why you don’t respect me?
Since I’ve been in SCW, a little over nine years now, I’ve made enemies left and right, more enemies than I care to admit. Some people have been jealous of my success since day one. Others think I’m too arrogant for my own good. But no one, no one, has gotten under my skin quite like Seleana Zdunich. She goes around acting like she’s so special. Let's just go ahead and leave out the fact that it took me six months to get another opportunity at the Bombshell Championship while she gets to be in another title match after four months. After her fluke win last week, she probably think she really has a chance of pulling off a miracle this Sunday. But the only person she’s fooling is herself.
As for Roxi Johnson, she knows that as champion she’s got a target on her back. She’s gone through a long list of women on her way to becoming champ, and staying champ. Great to hear, good for her. Roxi has a rematch with Masque de Lune at Violent Conduct, and it’s assumed she will still be champion by then.
While Roxi probably thinks Seleana and I will be in her rear view, she needs to remember one thing:
Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.
And so, without getting too cocky, which I am wont to do, I’m going to walk into the go-home Climax Control to Violent Conduct and I’m going to take the Bombshell World Championship around Roxi’s waist. And honestly, I don’t care who I have to beat to get the job done. These past few weeks, months, year only serve as setbacks to setup my comeback. And despite what you may think, failure isn't fatal. But I am.
I’m the ultimate veteran. I’ve seen it all and, yes, I've done it all. But I'm not done yet in SCW and I will not sleep until I'm once again Bombshell Champion. My chances may be thirty-three percent, but my confidence is 100 percent that I’ll do whatever it takes to once again make history. I've not only overcame odds, I've beaten them. Has it happened all the time? No. But you've seen enough of my matches to know that while I may be down, I'm never out.
Now, you can call me what you want. Smug, arrogant, delusional. But the only thing you need to refer to me as is the uncrowned Bombshell World Champion.
Long before you knew, and long after you’ll remember.
K O L K A T A, I N D I A
“At some point, I’m going to be tired living life out of a suitcase.”
“Seem like you’re having a good time to me.”
[Mercedes Vargas smiles broadly as she takes a selfie with her smart phone before transferring back to her video call with her friends. Irma and Ricardo are at the studio going through a brainstorming session. Each have a pile of script rewrites before them.]
Mercedes: What can I say, I like selfies.
Irma: There’s only so many duckface selfies you can take in one session, Merce. Think you got a little “snap happy.” there.
Mercedes: I’m only sharing my experiences with the world I live  in. Is that so wrong?
Irma: I’ve been told it’s a form of online narcissism.
Mercedes: I never thought about it like that. What are you working on?
Ricardo: There’s a film festival coming up later this month. As you can see, things aren’t going so well.
Mercedes: That rough, huh? Such is the life of a film writer.
Ricardo: Thank you for sharing my pain.
Mercedes: I’ll send you a postcard from India.
[Mercedes takes another quick selfie.]
Ricardo: Nevertheless, she persisted.
Irma: Did you practice yoga like I told you?
Mercedes: Yeah, I think I’m less stressed out before I started. I’m still trying to master the Tree Pose. I just don’t know if it’s really exercise or creative standing. I was always told I was awkward. How do you do it?
Irma: Balance.
Present Day ♦ C H A N D I G A R H, I N D I A
[REC•]
[Scene opens as we see throngs of people from all walks of life out and about in the city square. Shops, cafes, all could be found in this bustling part of the Chandigarh, India. Despite a slight breeze blowing in, the sun shone brilliantly on this afternoon as Mercedes enters the shot. She smiles at the camera.]
“And so I find myself in a world title match for the first time in a long time since my last time competing for the Bombshell World Championship, which this time it’s against Roxi Johnson, which isn’t our first time and it sure won’t be our last. Regardless, this time Roxi won’t get the best of me because I’ve proven that I can string along a few wins together at any given time.”
[She crosses an intersection and, once on the other side of the street, she continues.]
“There’s just major development to this match. I guess some people think I’m only in this match so I can make a run at the world championship. That's about all that could've been asked of me.”
[She shrugs.]
“This all could have been avoided, this triple threat match. I thought I had Seleana Zdunich right where I wanted her, but like her namesake, the Black Cat had nine lives and lived to fight another day, at my expense. That day is just around the corner. A triple threat match for the Bombshell Championship held by Roxi Johnson. And while she’s held this title for since March, it’s becoming increasingly clear her days as champion are numbered.
“It’s one thing for yours truly having a need to find motivation for when I have absolutely nothing left to prove. I realize I’m closer to the end of my career than the beginning but just because I’ve accomplished a lot in my career, doesn’t mean I’ve lost the chip on my shoulder. That's how I’ve stayed on top this long. As one of the most established stars in the Bombshells Division, I’m pretty much teflon. And I don’t even need to flaunt my accomplishments. I’m like a Venus flytrap — beautiful and deadly at the same time.”
“It goes without saying that I have a lot more to lose than Seleana does this Sunday. If I lose, I still have my legacy to define me.”
[Mercedes does a stereotypical Swedish accent, though it sounded more like an exaggerated Northern Minnesota accent ala Fargo.]
“If Seleana loses? Well, yeah, she’s still got that fluke title win to fall back on, ja?”
[Her voice has a sharp edge and there was a lot of passion and intensity behind it.]
“When the referee counted the three, I knew I gave my all against Seleana but it wasn’t good enough last week, and then I remembered that I’m only as good as my last match. I’m not defined by one match, or in my case, several matches. Obviously, I haven’t been the champion in a little bit, but I’m not defined by my title drought either. I am in the title picture, and I will always be in the title picture.”
[Mercedes raises her index finger for a moment, considering the thought then shakes her head.]
“It's one of those unfortunate side effects of being that damn good.“
[Mercedes stops, crossing her arms and now giving the camera her full attention.]
“When it comes to big time matches, nobody does it better. Triple threat? I AM the triple threat! I am second to none. And when it comes to making history, I am the first to do it.”
[Upon saying that, she uses both hands and motions at herself.]
“So if I were Roxi, I wouldn't plan on holding that title for very long.”
[Smiling while saying that, her arrogance was at an all-time high and that is saying something because we never thought that Mercedes  could get any more arrogant than what she already was.]
“Roxi may be champion but she’s also on notice. It’s not on you, it’s in you. A CHAMPION.”
[With that, Mercedes walks off, but the camera stays on the picturesque view of the city as our scene fades.]
Blog: Almighty Fire
semana del 7 al 14 de agosto de 2022
Before I begin, shout out to Crystal Zdunich on an amazing eight-year career in Sin City Wrestling. Crystal got fired this past Sunday on Climax Control to the surprise, shock, and utter horror of only three of her fans but this was pretty much an easy decision made by the top brass, and I can’t say I blame them. That’s not to say that Crystal hasn’t earned everything she’s accomplished in those eight years - and she’s been a lightning rod of controversy for most of it - but whatever people may say about her, there’s no doubt in my mind that she’s earned her status as a Hall of Famer and a bonafide legend in the six-sided ring.
Crystal being fired is the real world equivalent of Donald Trump no longer being President. You knew it was coming, you just didn’t know when.
Our long national nightmare is over.
A lot of you are probably saying, “well damn, Mercedes, how could you be saying that about Crystal when the two of you have traveled down the road together and have been fierce frienemies for over a decade? You two were even part of the same induction class in the SCW Hall of Fame!” Not to say that this point isn’t valid, but upon realizing that I just find it funny that the same person who inducted Crystal into the Hall of Fame is the same one who inducted her into another one - former SCW talent.
This is why it’s never a good idea to get on the bad side of Christian Underwood.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Anyway, to business.
They say opportunity knocks only once, though I have my doubts about that because lately it seems like opportunity knocks all the time for some people in SCW. I’m not knocking it, no pun intended, I’m just wondering when some of that is going to fall off my table.
I guess my prayers were answered because such an opportunity is waiting for me this weekend. But it’s not just about getting an opportunity, it’s about seizing it. And I’m about to carpe diem in less than a week at Climax Control. I found out that next week I’ll be challenging for the Bombshell World Championship at the go-home show before Violent Conduct. Though if I don’t beat Seleana Zdunich this weekend, then my match becomes a triple threat - and I really don’t want Seleana of all people shoehorning her way into MY title match. This unintentionally highlights a problem. When would the official number one contender in any sport be facing someone who has already had three title matches this year and had zero wins? Not in boxing, not in MMA, and perhaps not even in pro wrestling. Seleana should be building herself up with credible wins, not just getting title matches on a whim.
Even if by some divine miracle Seleana gets past me this weekend, does anyone think she stands a chance winning the Bombshell Championship, let alone beating Roxi for it? Remember, she already failed once against Roxi for the title way back in April at Climax Control 329, and in the main event no less. She failed to beat Roxi during her third reign two years ago, which was also the main event of the night. Never mind the fact that Roxi owns Seleana in SCW anyway as she’s beaten her at every point of her career - singles, tag, and multiwoman.
So why does Seleana gets to have this opportunity, especially after coming off competing for a title just two weeks ago? You can’t tell me that my match with Masque de Lune wasn’t more impressive than Seleana’s predictable epic fail in the Bombshell Internet Championship battle royal or that she defeated her estranged wife at Summer XXXTreme. I mean, seriously? It’s not fair, it’s not right, and I deserve better than this.
Seleana has found herself in a situation where she is simply at the right place, at the right place at the right time. And I can't really fault her for what she did. Maybe Christian Underwood calls it initiative. Well, I'm sure there would have been several Bombshells who would have jumped at the chance for a handout like Seleana is getting, but me? I'm not one of those people. Because I take pride in knowing that there isn't a single soul on this roster that can take me out. Many have tried, none has succeeded. I take pride in knowing that I've earned everything I've worked for not just in my career, but in this company.
So yeah, Seleana is the right girl, at the right place, at the right time. And this happens to be my Groundhog’s Day moment. I already faced Seleana three times this year alone, and I’m just about sick of this and sick of her. I’m almost sure that Seleana is going to have extra motivation this weekend following Crystal getting fired - or maybe she’ll be the complicit mail order bride she’s been known for since they got married. I know she’s hurting, I know she’s bitter, angry, and miserable, and I don't blame her one bit.
Honestly, I really don’t care.
This is going to be a bad week – for Seleana. And if I were her, and I'm sooooooo glad I'm NOT, I would forfeit the match, I wouldn't even show up. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't even BE in the same city we'll be in this weekend. But if she does, if Seleana does show up, if her music hits and she walks down that ramp and she enters that six-sided ring, I promise you, I swear to you, that it will not be a pleasant experience.
I hope Seleana knows what’s coming to her. Whether she likes me or hates me, she will respect me. And if she doesn't? Well, I'm going to have to beat the respect out of her. And when I kick her ass this weekend on Climax Control, you're all going to want to be tuning in.
I’ve got unfinished business in two weeks, and I prefer to have my alone time with Roxi Johnson. This is what I’ve been waiting for. It’s what I’ve worked for. This is what all the sacrifices are for. So Seleana can forget about another title match. For her to get to that, I'd have to move over.
And I'm gonna stand right here.
~~~

So, it’s been three weeks now since the SCW overseas tour of India. For the most part, India has been been interesting, for the most part.

What else can I say, I’m a fish out of water, especially one who is still adjusting to the time difference. I’m still thinking it’s 9AM when it’s 6 pm.

[Mercedes Vargas steps out the balcony of her hotel room, cup of coffee in hand, looking down at the city below.]

MERCEDES: Good morning, my neighbors!

NEIGHBOR: HEY! FUCK YOU!

MERCEDES: YES! YES! FUCK YOU TOO!

At least the neighbors are friendly, so there’s that.

LATER…MUCH LATER

“Well, hello! How are you?”

“Well, I’m fine! How are you? And, might I add, who are you?”

[Mercedes is invited into an Indian family home. This was already getting awkward just from conversation from the man who she was talking to at the moment.]

Mercedes: Who am I?

Man: Am I supposed to know?

[Mercedes’ expression changes from happy to crestfallen in two seconds flat.]

Mercedes: I’m Mercedes Vargas. You know, international extraordinaire, multiple-time champion. Most talented wrestler in Sin City Wrestling?”

[Even Mercedes efforts of jogging the man’s memory proved fruitless. The man and his family nod their head.]

Man: Sin City Wrestling. I’ve heard about that company. Very good wrestlers.

Mercedes: What’s this?

[The man takes out an open notepad and hand it to Mercedes, whose face lights up.]

Mercedes: You want my autograph? Sure, no problem. Most people know that I am must-see TV. You are lucky that I took time out of my busy schedule to do this.

Man: Um...I don't even watch your matches.

«Mercedes nearly dropped the pen out of her hand.»

Mercedes: Now, why don't you want my autograph?

Woman: Because you’re mean, and treat everyone like dirt. That’s not positive behavior for my children.

Mercedes: Now where did you hear that?

Woman: Candy.

Yeah, that was my second guess. Of course it would be Candy. Poisoning the minds of children since 2019, even in reruns. This is exactly how rumors get started. Now this family will never shut up about it! Looks like I’ll have to do some damage control. Damn you, Candy!

Mercedes: Oh, that's just a silly rumor. This was someone's idea of making me look bad, that my name is being dragged through the mud, that they're trying to ruin my reputation. I'm a human being, damn it! My name has value!

Little girl: What does 'rumor' mean?

Mercedes: Don't you learn anything?

Man: She’s home-schooled.

[Mercedes' face contorts briefly in a show of mock sympathy.]

Mercedes: My condolences.

Little Girl: Do you know Candy?

Mercedes: Know her? I’m her sister. Why do you ask?

Woman: Really? I didn’t know she had a sister. Could you get me Candy’s autograph after the show? It's the only one I don't have of the Bombshells who matter.

[Mercedes pretends to concentrate on her crossword, though she is truly hurt by this.]

Mercedes: Trust me, you don't want an autograph from Candy. Her and kids don't go well together.

Oh, if only they knew. If only they knew of the horror stories and what Candy does to those poor, innocent souls, they would be scarred for life. I bet those kids were, too. There’s only so much glitter a person can take. The little girl really should ask for another Bombshell’s autograph. Candy makes Twisted Sister look like Joan of Arc by comparison.

Woman: What about Seleana Zdunich? She says you’re the worst person ever.

Mercedes: You're going to believe her over me? That’s not fair. Just because someone's said something about you doesn't mean it's true. Besides, they've got nothing better to do than sullen my good name. You know what? No autograph for you!

[The man asked Mercedes to take a picture and then introduces her to his whole family. To say that being invited to an Indian family wasn’t one of the more special experiences in India would be an understatement. Mercedes was glad to check this moment off her to-do list.

Present Day ♦ K O L K A T A, I N D I A

[REC•]

[Here in Brahmapur, a neighborhood in Garia, Kolkata, we find Mercedes Vargas sat on a curb. Walls covered in interesting abstract art are on either side of her.]

“Not sure what’s melting down faster. Our glaciers due to global warming or Todd Williams the morning after he realized his ex-wife got fired and that he’s royally fucked now that Christian Underwood can do with him as he damn well please because he’s under contract.

“At least somebody is standing up for Crystal in her time of need. Now, look, I’m not a therapist, or play one on TV, but for someone who is supposedly married, don’t you think Crystal’s moral support should come from her current spouse instead of someone who used to be part of her life? Whatever happened to in sickness and in health, for richer for poorer? Crystal is no longer the breadwinner in her household, so it’s up to Seleana to hold down the fort, and I don’t think she’s even capable of doing that.”

[An unapologetic shake of her head follows.
With the shocking news of Crystal’s dismissal from the company, maybe the situation could have been handled better, but the Mercedes still believed that this cautionary tale was the shot in the arm the division sorely needed.]

“As far as her SCW career goes, I am not here to take anything away from Seleana. The Cat isn’t just a nickname, this is a woman who has scratched and clawed her way to a somewhat respectable place in the Bombshells Division. Not a bonafide star, but just above the gatekeepers like Jessie Salco. She is a proud former Bombshell World Champion…. who fluked her way to victory no thanks in part to Crystal costing Alicia Lukas the title. Seleana is also a former Bombshell Roulette Champion, just holding that title for over three months, but only got the title match in the first place thanks to Crystal using her Queen for a Day matchmaking powers. Seleana has won two championships and has just north of 30 wins in her career, though she’s been with SCW for four years. Know where I was after my first four years in?”

[Mercedes begins counting on her fingers while still keeping her gaze at the camera.]

“A Bombshell Triple Crown and Grand Slam champion, an overall nine-time title holder, exactly 40 wins to my name, a two-time Bombshell World Champion, and the first-ever Queen for a Day.

“Do you see where this is going? As good as Seleana is, she always leaves you wanting something more, always leaves that door open for someone to be that much better than her.
I’m not just that damn good, I’m not just better, I’m simply the best. At the age of 42, I’m at the latter end of my career. That isn’t lost on me. But if age is just a number, I must be magnificent. I’m a two-time Hall of Famer, the most decorated talent in the entire company, and still the only Bombshell to win every championship available in the division, including the World Mixed Tag Team Championship. I continue to win championships, break records, set milestones, and add to my legacy. I’m one of the greatest that this company has to offer, and it doesn’t matter where I am on any card, for any championship, at any time. Why? Because I’m the One-Woman Dynasty of Sin City Wrestling - there is no substitute or comparison.”

[Mercedes smiles at the camera, sliding her sunglasses over her head.]

“This Sunday, Seleana, you and I will be seeing each other once again, if only for someone else’s amusement. But that makes only one of us because when I saw the card for this weekend and found out about this match, I was not amused, more like disgusted. Still am. Probably won’t change before, during, or after our match Sunday either.

“It’s been three years since you last held the Bombshell Championship, you’ve been chasing that title for the past three years since you lost it - and you won a grand total of never. Five opportunities in three years, Seleana. I’m willing to bet when you heard about this match you ran and told all your friends, so I know how much this match means to you. Except, you know how they say that if you follow your dreams you’ll succeed? Don’t ever follow that advice because sometimes when you wake up, Mercedes Vargas is your reality.

“Do you remember what happened last time we faced each other, Seleana? I sure do. You were calling for the Kattoga, the Asai DDT, to end the match. But in an instant, by some cruel twist of fate, you ended up getting dropped on your head with the Black. Rose. Overdrive. And on Sunday, it’s going to end the same exact way that it ended nearly two months ago in Tucson, Arizona.

“What you need to realize is that when Crystal got fired last Sunday, it was her own fault why she’s now out of a job. Crazy people do things to tempt fate while stupid people do things that seal their fate. And now that your wife is gone from SCW, and hopefully gone for good, Christian isn’t going to stop there. He’s not only going to make her Todd’s life a living hell, oh no.”

[Mercedes lifts her hand and wags her index finger accompanied with a devious little smile.]

“He’s going to make your life one too. He did it once before.”

[It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Pretty sure that moment in time was a repressed memory Seleana would not want to revisit. Christian Underwood was notorious for getting revenge on anyone who dared crossed him, real or imagined. Mercedes almost felt sorry for what was about to happen to Seleana. Almost.]

“And if there is anyone who is bona fide, certified, and qualified to be the first one to send you on your way to joining Crystal in unemployment, Christian found the right one. I’ll be more than happy to do just that. And this time, Seleana, I’ll be crossing off your name for the last time.”

[Mercedes reaches over for her checklist and slowly, methodically, takes a red Sharpie and draws a line through Seleana’s name.]

"Estar preparado para lo peor, esperar lo mejor."
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best."

[Mercedes fluffs and straightens out her hair and then slowly cross her arms. She pauses for effect, lowering her voice just above a whisper.]

"Y que la suerte está siempre en su favor.”
“And may the odds be ever in your favor."

[Need to know today's forecast? Want to know tonight's Lotto numbers? Sorry, Mercedes Vargas is probably not the person to ask. If you're looking for spoilers for the Summer XXXTreme pay-per-view three weeks ago, well, you're just fresh out of luck. Even if she was eerily accurate on every match at the supercard, though that was few and far between, she would have enjoyed this night more.

Mercedes sat in her Porsche Cabriolet on a cool night in Los Angeles, stuck in a pensive mood on the night that was as she contemplates on what could have been. The Hall of Famer has made a career out of making moments and making history. That night aboard the Sun Princess, history was denied - again.

It’s tough losing a title match. It’s even tougher on pay-per-view. Before she was set to board for another international trip, how would she psyche herself out of another defeat at one of her most unluckiest supercards this time around?]

M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S:

“I was this close, this close. Can we just say that I’m cursed at Summer XXXTreme? God must be punishing me. I mean, even Jessie Salco finally won at Summer XXXTreme. How do you go ten straight events without winning at least once?! Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for her. In a perfect world, no one should lose that many times but that’s crazy!”

[An unapologetic shrug follows. Point made.]

M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S:

“Melissa won the Ultimate X match and the Bombshell Roulette Championship, good for her. I feel awful just thinking what she must be going through right now. Winning a championship is one thing, keeping it is another. Next.”

[And then then there was what happened at the first Climax Control following Summer XXXTreme at CC 336.]

“Beating up Kat Jones after her loss to Crystal last week. Do I have any regrets? Hmm, let me think about that. No. Can’t say that I have. I bet she never sent it coming though. Serves her right for what she said about me. Well, here's the wakeup call she never saw coming: it's time to shape up or ship out.”

[When asked about Mercedes’ match with Masque de Lune, the Argentine bristled at the question.]

“I don’t know why this match didn’t happen sooner. They say you often meet your fate on the road you take to avoid it. Well, I think we’re on a collision course this weekend and I bet those fans can’t wait to see how this ends. Me crushing Masque’s throat under my boot would be great.

“I'm one of SCW’s mainstays, and I wasn't even here on the first show. If Sunday is the last time you see me in an SCW ring, would you tell Oprah I love kittens?”

[You can't fault Mercedes for the ambition -- she’s not going to get up there and say he's happy just to make the card for-- but both she and SCW fans will likely be disappointed this weekend if they're actually expecting an upset.]

“For as long as I've been here, I haven’t back down from a challenge, and that's not about to start now. Ask around, they’ll tell you. At the end of the day, Masque can be beaten. It’s been done before, it can happen again.

I’m ready for it. Let’s go.”

[Cautiously optimism or foolish endeavor. Sometimes the lines are blurred. One thing was for sure, she wasn’t going to be no one’s martyr if she could help it.

For whom the bell tolls? She would answer it.]

Blog: Almighty Fire
semana del 26 al 31 de julio de 2022

Some people are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them. Some have the longevity, others have consistency but rarely does someone has both such as yours truly. Thing is, it seems to me that when you’re good, nobody remembers you. When you’re bad, nobody forgets you.

Life is funny like that.

I am a bonafide legend and my accomplishments speak for themselves. I have accomplished nearly everything I could have ever dreamed of and then some. I've had my share of ups, downs, failures, and successes and coped with them all. Of course, the difference between me and the laundry list of names who breezed through this company? I came out stronger for it. That's why you'll never see me leave this promotion unless I'm CARRIED out, something neither one of you, even with the same brain cell, will be capable of doing. Go ahead and mock my title reigns while you're at it. The record book still says I'm the most decorated champion in this company, and that’s never going to change.

The SCW Women's division has risen to a new level. Maybe it’s a course correction. Or maybe I’m just looking too deep into it because the times, they are a changing. I’m not better than anyone else, but nobody is better than me. Nobody. I built the foundation and can still compete with whoever is brave enough to stand in my way.

That isn’t arrogance. It's the facts. And you can’t argue with facts.

But let’s get this back to where it should be.

Everybody knows about Masque de Lune. She has no conscience and sleeps great at night with no concern over her misdeeds. Similar to Amber Ryan. And yet, out of pure jealousy or spite or malice, all it took was a brutal assault to make Masque public enemy number one in Sin City. Mostly every Bombshell wanted her blood, some still do. It didn’t stop at Summer XXXTreme when she got exposed, let’s make that clear. Now, I was taught to never kick someone while they’re down - and most people with violent tendencies wouldn’t stop at that when it comes to Masque these days - because more often than not they will get back up again.

Roxi was right as rain when she said that Masque will be coming for her because she didn’t stop Masque, she just slowed her down. Until that time, Masque will no doubt circle the date she and Roxi meet again. For now, Masque has a date with me this weekend. But you know something, I get the feeling I’m not going to like this date very much. On the night of my milestone 200th career match, I guess I wasn’t as lucky as Jessie Salco when she had her 200th match last week, but those are the cards I’ve been dealt with, so I’m going to deal.

The fact that Masque failed to win the Bombshell World Championship from Roxi Johnson three weeks ago is not lost on me. I also know Masque has been looking forward to our match for awhile because as you might remember, it was me and Diamond Steele taking on Masque and Amber until Diamond had a change of heart and bailed on me at the last second so the match had to be changed. Again, I wasn’t going to take on Masque and Amber by myself and I sure as hell wasn’t going to face them with a new partner so I took the night off. I’m sure Masque and Amber were disappointed, but the Metal Maniacs are always after a good time, so I’m glad they stepped up when they did.

Only this time, I’m going to step up and back it up.

Masque wanting to face me this weekend probably makes her want to tap dance down the aisle. She has an appetite for destruction that makes Twisted Sister and Iron Maiden seem pale in comparison. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment. Or, maybe, just maybe, I’m looking forward to this match too, Masque.

You think you’re so badass and cool with your little plastic mask. Not that I’m scared, not that I care. I don’t care about your mask. You know what that tells me. It tells me your scared, it tells me you’re insecure. When I see my opponent I look them dead in the eye and I want them to look at mine. Because there’s no fear behind these eyes, only anticipation. What are you hiding? Honestly, I don’t care if you have a plastic mask, a prosthetic arm, a glass eye, or a peg leg.

Don’t get me wrong, your record, just like your reputation, precedes you. I won’t let your mask fool me because beyond that lies someone who is a killer. But If you think you can be just as evil and ruthless, just wait until you see the other side of Mercedes Vargas. That’s the side that you will be getting on Sunday. When I rip off that mask of superiority, I want to look into your cold, sullen eyes and see what I see. And for the first time ever, you will know pain, you will know hurt, and you will know loss. And when I beat the ten shades of shit out of you, you’re going to respect me.

There are prime time players and those who say they are. I’m ALWAYS going to show up and show out because I rise to every occasion. I’m not like these other girls you got scurrying around. I’m a different breed and I’m nothing to fuck with. Regardless if it’s you, if it’s Kayla, or Chloe, or Melissa, or someone coming up from Sin City Underground, no matter what happens Sunday, you are going to remember that you were in a fight with me. Full stop. Period. End of story.

This Sunday I will be wearing black because there’s going to be a funeral, but it won’t be mine. Roxi already put the nail in your coffin at Summer XXXTreme and come Sunday, mamita, I’m going to be the hammer that drives it home.

So you tell yourself whatever you need to get yourself to sleep each night, you say whatever words you think will give you some validation but know this... None of it means a damn thing to me. I learned a long time ago that people will say whatever they have to, to get what they want. Just like you're going to convince everyone that you're the best without.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. And may the odds be ever in your favor.

“So, it’s 2AM and my neighbor is outside mowing his lawn. I’m about to call the cops because what the hell?”

“So miss… Whatchu do for a living?”

[Mercedes Vargas is in the backseat of an Uber as she is driven to the airport. The eyes of the Uber driver seemed interested through the rear view mirror.

Mercedes seems reluctant to answer.]

Mercedes: “Uhhh… I’m a box maker.”

[Mercedes doesn’t always lie about her profession but sometimes she still do so she doesn’t get bombarded with questions. The secret is the most boring the career, the better. She says she’s a sports writer and the Uber driver talks endlessly about his sports team. Say she was a realtor and there are in the market for a new home. It never ends. So box maker it is. Nobody ever wants to talk about making boxes.

Uber driver: A box maker? How did you get into that?

Mercedes: Funny, you say that. I was always told I was good with my hands. And I like keeping things simple. It pays the bills, at least.

Uber driver: So you know your way around boxes? So you’re like the Gordon Ramsey of cardboard?

Mercedes: “Yeeeah … Something like that.”

[Mercedes is so deep in this web of lies she probably thinks she’s actually working for him now.]

Uber driver: That sounds pretty easy.

Mercedes: Oh, trust me, it’s not. I have a deliberating condition that makes me hate waking up early and rather staying in bed.

Uber driver: And there's a word for this?

Mercedes: Clinomania.

Uber driver: Clinomania?

Mercedes: Google is your friend. Look it up.

Uber driver: How do you force yourself to get up every morning to get to work?

Mercedes: Coffee, concealer, and Jesus. Sometimes not in that order.

Present Day ♦ J A I P U R • I N D I A

[Mercedes is standing in front of City Palace wearing minimal makeup and dressed in a pashminas that cover her shoulders, partly in protest of the heat and partly because of the laws here in India, especially important in religious temples.]

“So it’s been over three weeks since Summer XXXTreme and I’ve had some time to pause and reflect. I didn’t win the Bombshell Roulette Championship, I wasn’t even in the final two in the Ultimate X Over the Pool match, but the last few weeks meant more to me than winning a title could ever have. My mini-winning streak was all I needed to remind everyone in the back AND myself that I’m still a major player in this division. I’m so capable and I’m proud of myself.”

[And why wouldn’t she be? Mercedes wasn’t just a pretty face or another name on the roster. If anything, she was one of if not the most consistent performer on the roster.]

“I’m especially proud about what I did to Kat Jones last week. Did she seriously think she was getting away with what she’s been saying about me? Kat got just what she deserved. If it wasn’t for Melissa getting into my business, Kat would be sitting next to Amber Ryan on the injured list. But Kat isn’t my concern this week. It’s Masque de Lune. Raise your hand if you saw this on your bingo card?”

[The odds of that is slim, but this was still the match the fans thought they didn’t need.]

“Masque de Lune. What do you say about Masque? Well, Masque doesn’t lose very often. She's only lost two matches in the almost six months she's been here, and she's only been pinned once. She’s downright scary. You know what’s scares people more? Success. And every time someone gets to the top there’s haters that want to bring them down. Pillars get knocked down, but foundations stay standing, and I’ve been a foundation in this company for nearly a decade. See, the problem isn't people seeing you too well, Masque. It's people hearing you too well. You seem like a fairly smart girl. Then you start to talk…

“Oh, your words. Your words hurt, your words cut, but they're not a sword. Most of the time when I listen to you, I can't honestly understand a thing you say. All you ever do is
talk in circles.”

[Mercedes makes a circular motion with her hands].

“I'm not here to make fun of you. I'm not looking down my nose at you because you're different, that you dress different. You're an outcast, a pariah. That’s fine by me. Come Sunday, do your worst and bring your best, Masque, because I’ll be right here waiting.

“You want me, come and get me.”

[Mercedes spreads her arms wide, obviously a clear invitation and challenge].

“See you Sunday.”

[Mercedes waves at the camera and smiles. She holds this for a moment as our scene fades].

semana del 19 al 26 de junio de 2022

So, here’s a fun fact for you: 2022 makes it 13 years of wrestling for me, nine of them here in Sin City Wrestling. I’ve held 25 championships total in six different promotions. More than half of those championships I’ve won right here in SCDub. I guess you can say wherever I am, success always seems to follow, no?

The trials, the triumphs, the injuries, the roadblocks…they were all worthwhile because it made me the person I am today. No matter what happens this point on in my career, no matter what anyone says about me - behind my back, to my face, or in front of a camera - I’m not better than anyone else, but nobody is better than me. Nobody. See, because, everyone knows exactly who Mercedes Vargas is. They know that I'm not going to back down from anything or anyone. They know that I'm the most hated woman in the Bombshells division. My reputation precedes me. My time will come to fight for a championship, and you can bet that I'll be champion once again. When I'm ready, I'm going to be coming back for the Bombshell Roulette Championship, and I plan on walking out of Summer XXXTreme the next champion.

So last week I had to face the wife of an SCW Hall of Famer. This week, I have to face the wife of an SCW Hall of Famer.

Life is crazy sometimes.

Anyway, Melissa is just getting into the wrestling business and if she had to be trained by somebody, you can’t go wrong with Goth. There’s a reason why he’s a bonafied legend in the AWA and SCW. He is THAT good. Will that translate to instant success for Melissa in the Bombshells Division, time will tell. But she’s off to a good start. She didn't do too bad in her last matches, which explains why she’s still undefeated. I think she's in way over head this time around and maybe she knows this too. She's not gonna stumble across a couple of warmup acts this weekend. She's coming up against a multiple-time champion, someone who is pretty much used to the pressure, someone who knows how to pick apart an opponent not on their game and make them pay for it. To be honest, I almost feel sorry for Melissa. Almost because this is the first time she is not favored to win a match. She’s now the underdog having to overcome the odds, and the odds won’t be in her favor.

But maybe luck smiles on her Sunday. I want Melissa to try her luck, see what happens, because to get past me takes a little bit of luck and a whole lot of talent. Every woman worth their salt knows that while I love to talk, I can back it up. Melissa has backed her words before, so I hope she backs up those words one more time because other than pointing out my championships and accomplishments every chance I get, there's nothing I enjoy more than proving people wrong. I’ve been doing that for nearly a decade. Pretty sure no one can argue against that track record.

Why have I been so successful for so long? Because experience tells you what to do, confidence allows you to do it.

Someday, you'll understand.

I’m a magician. I cut Ms. Jon down to size, I made Alicia Lukas’ undefeated streak disappear, and I didn’t need nine lives to beat The Cat.

For my next trick: I’m going to tame The Lioness.

Say abracadabra!

[There is no such thing as a working vacation, at the very least, a working vacation where one actually gets to enjoy time off. For Mercedes Vargas, finding out that the next Climax Control was returning to Arizona was, to put it mildly, a godsend. Short trips are always a good thing. Here Mercedes spends an afternoon at Madame Monsieur, a sidewalk bakery and cafe on a busy Downtown Los Angeles street with modest tourists, Mercedes is finding the perfect opportunity to finish up the Sunday's Los Angeles Times crossword.]

MERCEDES: I’m not buying that you think you know me better than I know you, Richie.

[Ricardo sits across from her, seemingly enjoying the challenge.]

RICARDO: I’m buying, and I have a bridge to sell you. I know that you indulge in Wheat Thins. What’s that about?

[Mercedes fills in a clue to one question before looking up to answer.]

MERCEDES: Not impressed. Everyone knows that I enjoy Wheat Thins. What else you got?

RICARDO: You do crosswords in pen - blue ink.

MERCEDES: That’s too easy.

RICARDO: You never had a wrestling match on your birthday, and you drink Shirley Temples or Pina coladas.

MERCEDES: Are you psychic?1

RICARDO: I might be. You went shopping today, right?

MERCEDES: Yeah, and?

RICARDO: Made out a grocery list?

MERCEDES: Uh-huh.

RICARDO: Probably went straight to the express lane - 20 items or less?

MERCEDES: Oh, you’re good. Next thing you’re going to tell me is you know everything on my list.

RICARDO: $10 says I can name five.

MERCEDES: How many chances do you want?

RICARDO: Three guesses.

[Mercedes thinks about it, then smiles. She reaches out to shake Ricardo’s hand.]

MERCEDES: Deal.

RICARDO: Grapes.

MERCEDES: Yes.

RICARDO: Greek yogurt.

MERCEDES: Yes.

RICARDO: Colombian coffee

MERCEDES: Three out of three.

RICARDO: Duct tape.

[Mercedes nods, holding up four fingers as well.]

MERCEDES: And the last thing?

RICARDO: Orange juice.

MERCEDES: Wrong. I didn’t buy orange juice. I win!

RICARDO: I got two chances left.

[Mercedes’ face is crestfallen.]

RICARDO: Pineapple juice.

[Ricardo holds out his hand.]

MERCEDES: Singles, fives, or a ten?

RICARDO: Thanks for playing.

Present Day ♦ L O S A N G E L E S • C A L I F O R N I A

[REC•]

“Happy first week of Summer!”

[Our scene opens where Mercedes Vargas is seen in the backyard of her residence relaxing in a hammock while eating an apple and enjoying the pristine weather that only Southern California can provide. For a moment, the two-time SCW Hall of Famer sits up and positions herself to address the camera.]

“It’s that time again for sand, surf, and sun. I don’t think you would see much of that in Arizona, though. I, for one, can't wait for Climax Control and my match with Melissa. Hopefully, I can continue my winning streak, though, but I have a sneaky feeling I’m going to have my work cut out for me Sunday.

“Oh, and speaking of Sunday…”

[Mercedes quickly holds up an index finger in a wait-a-minute gesture.]

“Is it me, or does anyone else find it strange that three of the four women in the Ultimate X Over the Pool match at Summer XXXTreme in three weeks also compete this weekend at the go-home show? Kat Jones, our reigning and defending Bombshell Roulette Champion, faces the Bombshell Internet Champion Masque de Lune in a non-title main event. Hey, I’m all for it. Everybody here and around the world is ready to see it. If I had to pick a winner, I hate to say it, but there’s a reason why Masque is undefeated in singles matches. I don’t think that’s going to end this weekend.”

[Mercedes shrugs.]

“Sorry, not sorry.”

[There’s a chance Kat could be upset seeing this - not that Mercedes cared or anything, or even that Kat wouldn’t be upset or cared either way - but the Argentine stood by her prediction. Nonetheless, Mercedes had her own match to worry about.]

“As for me and Melissa? I can see why we’re going to open the show, and it’s not because she’s just the newcomer or that Jessie Salco was given the night off. It’s because everyone else on the card will have to follow what we do on Sunday because our match will steal the show.

“They say you're never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you're never as bad as they say when you lose. You're only as good as your last match. Melissa, I was seemingly impressed by your recent victories - sure, they were against Chloe and Ariana, not exactly what I call competition, but impressive nonetheless. You have a bright future and endless potential. But then again, I seem to be a broken record these days because I often say that a lot to the fresh-faced newcomers that walk through these hollow doors. Most of the opponents I’ve faced are either injured, retired or have since left the company and the rare few aren't in the company long enough to realize their true potential, and that's a shame.”

[Clicking her tongue partly out of dismay and partly out of the sheer wonder of it all, Mercedes' smile faded as she briefly shakes her head, a look of disappointment is there too.]

“It’s a good thing you beat Ariana to qualify for the Ultimate X match at Summer XXXTreme because I don’t think your ego would take it if you had to face Jessie Salco in your pay-per-view debut. It’s not the first time Jessie has punched above her weight but I’m pretty sure you would enjoy crushing her like a bug than having to beat three other women in your first title match.

“I don’t say this often to many people, but Melissa, I respect you, I respect your fiancé, I respect your journey, but make no mistake about it, I’m a killer. I don’t need to say it, I do it. So my question is before you have to step in the ring with me how are you enjoying your fifteen seconds of fame? Because you just went from the shallow end of the pool to the great big ocean. Talk about pressure!”

[Mercedes wipes her forehead.]

“You must be really good if you were handpicked by Christian Underwood to face me. But understand Melissa that I am the ultimate veteran. I’ve seen it all, I’ve done it all. If you are going to beat me, I'm going to make you earn it, mamita. And there's no limits to the lengths and depths I will go to bring the fight to you. So I hope you bring everything you got. Anything less, and you can say bye-bye to your undefeated streak.”

[She offers a finger-wave.]

"I don't wrestle, I slay. My checklist is proof of that. Maybe you’ve heard of it. Don’t worry, your name will be part of it soon."

[Mercedes angles her head to one side as her arrogance shines through. A small smile turns into a satisfying grin. Mercedes was always told to err on the side of caution, but such advice meant little to her. Murphy's Law has a funny way of ruining plans - even the best laid plans - but there's just no way she could mess this up, right?]

“Just remember one thing: I'm not in that ring with you, you're in that ring with me.”

[For a moment the smile returns to her face while running her fingers through her hair.]

“See you Sunday.”

[With that, the scene fades on Mercedes' confident smirk before she offers a heart gesture with her hands before breaking it in two.]
