And this is where you should realize that you should have read the RP by Gabriel. Because otherwise things will just seem entirely out of whack!
What exactly was it that Gabriel had pointed out with so much amusement? The fact he had slipped Despayre a Chinese finger trap to occupy his mind and now Despayre was having quite the difficult time in getting it off, and causing a bit of a ruckus inside of the locker room, drawing some stares from the wrestlers around them.
Despayre flopped onto the nearest bench and put his foot against the finger trap and tried to leverage his way out of it but ended up losing his balance with a dramatic “WHOOP!” and he fell over backward and to the floor. There were some scattered laughs but it didn’t phase Despayre in the slightest as he struggled on the floor to draw his leg back out from his arms and he scrambled to his hands and knees over the fallen bench just as Synn approached.
“Those Chinese certainly know their traps, don’t they???” He said with wide eyed innocence as Synn tucked a hand under his arm and assisted him to his feet.
“Joshua? What about you?” Synn asked the young man who had yet to be revealed to the world as his son and up until this point, was just believed to be a young charge that had fallen under Synn’s (at this point in time) uncharacteristic protection. Gabriel slowly approached the scene to also look at the one who he himself had given the affectionate nickname of “Despy..
It was hard to fathom that when they had first met, Gabriel was apprehensive about forming any sort of bond with Despayre, given the much forgotten and passed over notion that he was quite literally classified as psychotic. But his innocence and childlike demeanor had somehow managed to capture Gabriel’s affections to the point he became more of a brother than merely a friend and tag team partner. In essence, Gabriel was second only to Synn when it came to protecting “his Despy” from harm. But now? The sight of Despayre with both forefingers from his hands stuck in the Chinese finger trap and the growing animosity he was beginning to show was bringing some amusement behind the smile on his lips.
Just a bit.
Synn placed a hand on Despayre’s shoulder, “Joshua.”
“Yo!” Despayre stopped struggling for the briefest of moments and he looked up into the piercing, emerald green eyes of the man who had rescued him from “the bad place”, otherwise known as Broodmoore Hospital.
Synn, sensing Despayre’s wants and needs unlike anyone else, slipped the lightly tan teddy bear known as Angel from the crook of his arms and passed it over to Gabriel to better allow Despayre to figure out a way past the finger trap. Synn gave him his most comforting look and asked, “Are you nervous?”
“Yeah!” Despayre declared hotly and held up his entrapped hands. “I’m likely never to get this thing off!”
Gabriel snorted back the laugh he almost let escape, but knowing it was likely Despayre might take it as a laugh at his own expense, he held back. Synn, not so lucky. The big man closed his eyes and sighed gently before patting Despayre on the shoulder and shook his head.
“No, Joshua.” Synn said gently. “Are you nervous about wrestling again?”
To which Despayre just stared at him with his own bright gray eyes. Despayre blinked, then smiled and said out of the blue, “You silly! I’m not wrestling!”
Of course this brought an interested look from between Gabriel and Synn before Gabriel found himself asking, “What do you mean you’re not wrestling, Despy?”
“Well first of all…” Despayre started to answer his pseudo-big brother and turned toward him, but that was when he forgot all about the finger trap on his hands and saw where he was standing and whipped his head around and looked in every direction. He declared, “Hey wait a minute! This isn’t McDonalds!”
He huffed and tried to shake an accusing finger at Synn but found it carried much less weight when it also brought both hands up for the shaking. He said, “You tricked me!”
“Joshua, I did no such thing.” Synn answered calmly. “I told you I was getting Gabriel and yourself back into wrestling. What did you think I meant?”
Despayre turned to Gabriel all innocent and answered, “I thought he was fixing us up with a couple of chicks!”
This time, Gabriel was not so lucky at holding back the laughter in its entirety. He snorted hard and quickly covered his nose in a grimace of pain. Despayre watched him cautiously and then turned to Synn and asked with hope in his voice, “Are we really wrestling again?”
“You are.” Synn nodded. “I thought you might have realized that from what we were just discussing. Plus my phone calls with Mark Ward. I know you were listening in on them.”
Despayre’s eyes grew wide and he leaned back at the waist with his joined hands over his heart in his best “who, me?” impression to which Synn said, “Yes, you.”
“That’s impossible!” Despayre stated with confidence before he looked at Gabriel and added, “I only do that on Tuesdays and Fridays when Angel is washing his delicates.” And Gabriel nodded with an expression of his own that screamed “oh really?”.
Despayre turned to Synn and asked, “Can we have McDonalds after if we win?”
“When you win.” Synn emphasized with a nod. “And yes, we can.”
Despayre turned back to Gabriel with an excited pose and smile for what was to come.
Las Vegas, Nevada -
12 years, 9 months and eight days later
12 years, 9 months and eight days later
It sounds so much longer than just saying 4665 days later, doesn’t it? Of course, by this time Gabriel Stevens had been not so much retired as having stepped away from the ring so as to focus on his growing family and the GO Gym he shared alongside his wife Odette. Oh and Despayre? His interest in the sport waned when Gabriel had stepped away, although he continued on for a while without him at his side. Despy shared some success as Tag Team Champion with other partners such as Big B and Jake “Rage” Sullivan, but his star truly shined as a two-time Internet Champion. Since that time, Despayre competed in the Blast From the Past Memorial but has not competed since the infamous Angel On the Pole match against the Troll in March of 2022.
Now this was a familiar spot that fans of Despayre and Angel have come to know over the years, the luxurious modern house he shared with his father Synn and their housekeeper, Theresa Aguilera who would seemingly never retire and stop taking care of her boys. Oh - not to mention Angel! You ALWAYS have to remember Angel! It was smack dab the middle of July and the sun over Las Vegas was scorching hot in the triple digits, but that did not stop Despayre from having his fun as he was outdoors in the backyard, taking full advantage of the swimming pool while his father met with Gabriel indoors, well away from the bothersome heat and indulging in the air conditioning.
Hard to believe there was a point where Despayre was afraid of water but the first time he jumped into a pool, he was like a duck in water and it was a most difficult task to keep him out. Whether he was in a pair of swim trunks or fully clothed.
“Wheee!” Despayre gleefully cried as he jumped into the pool with a loud and wide splash and doggy paddled across the waters to the floating lounge chair where Angel rested with a pair of shades over his eyes and a Mai Tai in his fuzzy paw. All of this was casually observed from the kitchen window which led to the patio deck, while Synn and a smiling Gabriel both watched before dropping the shades over the sliding door and continued with their meeting.
“So you got the contract finalized?” Gabriel asked as he took a seat at the island counter in the heart of the house, the kitchen which everyone knew was Theresa’s domain and not to be trifled with. Synn sat opposite him and rested his forearms on the counter’s edge and nodded, answering, “It arrived today. Just awaiting both of our signatures.”
Speak of the devil, the woman of the house and the only one within these walls who would teach Despayre the meaning of the word “no”, Theresa, entered. As if on pure instinct, she proceeded to open the cupboard doors for a couple of glasses and then retrieved a pitcher of iced tea from the refrigerator to serve the two men some refreshment.
Both men thanked her before Synn noticed she was going for another glass and a can of Cherry Coke from the fridge, more than likely to take something out to Despayre so he could have some relief in the sun.
“Not necessary, Theresa.” Synn said as he stood up, confusing the housekeeper who had become more like family to anyone who set foot inside of this house. Gabriel himself wrinkled a brow as Synn again approached the patio door. But before he slid it open, he gave Gabriel a look and said, “It seems I got another contract from Underwood.”
He slid the patio door open and called out, “Joshua! Can you come inside for a moment??? I need to speak with you!”
“Uh oh…” Despayre murmured with wide eyes shifted toward the teddy bear as he slowly sank beneath the waters…
“Yyyyessss?” Despayre stood at the open patio door with his best look of innocence but for him, it was not a difficult thing to accomplish. He dared not set foot inside so long as he was dripping wet, at least not inside of the kitchen while Theresa was around.
“Joshua,” Synn began to say. “I received a contract from SCW offices about Gabriel’s match against Casey Williams this morning.”
“Oh?”
“And imagine my surprise when I received a second contract along with it.” Synn continued, and the look dropped on Despayre’s face and Gabriel’s attention was entirely on the growing situation. “A contract stating you were to team with Candy against Bill and Bea Barnhart?”
“No!” There goes that innocent act again.
“Would you happen to know anything about that?” Synn inquired, prompting Despayre to clasp his hands behind his back and he rocked on his heels, back and forth. A tell-tale sign to any who knew him well enough.. A telltale sign to any who knew him well enough.
“Despy?” Gabriel spoke up. “What did you do?”
“Me? Nothing!” Despayre protested. “Angel did it. He thought since you were wrestling Casey, it might be fun if he were to defend his Universal championship on the same show!”
“Only Angel is not the one competing.” Synn emphasized. “You are.”
Synn held up his phone for Despy to see the screen and the digital contract. Despayre then turned around to face the pool and the teddy bear still floating in complete relaxation. He pointed a finger toward Angel and called aloud, “You stinker! You tricked me!”
“Joshua…” Synn’s baritone voice drew his attention back to his dad and Synn asked, “Are you absolutely certain that you didn’t just want to be on the same show as Gabriel one more time…?”
“I don’t have to stand here and listen to these wild and baseless accusations!” With a hand on Synn’s chest, Despayre promptly marched right inside, across the kitchen, and he opened a door swiftly to step inside and slam the door behind him.
Everyone else - from Synn to Gabriel to Theresa - stood there and stared at the closed door. And they continued to stare for several long moments until Gabriel finally broke the silence and asked, “How long do you think before he realizes he’s in the broom cupboard?”
“Oh he most likely already knows.” Synn answered. “But you know that pride of his.”
“Hunh.” Gabriel murmured. “Where could he have gotten that from?” Earning a bemused look from Synn.
Theresa stepped up to the closed door and she sighed, “Well I hope he comes out soon now that I have all this water to mop up!” And the door suddenly slid open just a smidge and a hand popped out, extending the mop into her hand before shutting once again. Theresa turned to the men and Gabriel buried his head in his arms on the counter, his shoulders trembling in silent laughter while Synn just shook his head.
“Well, whaddya know! Sin City Wrestling actually made it to four hundred shows! Not pay-per-views, but four hundred editions of Climax Control! In this day and age of wrestling promotions, four hundred weeks not counting Supercard events is almost unheard of! And not once did mark Ward or Christian Underwood ever cancel or even postpone a single show since they first debuted back at the end of 2011! Wow…!”
“And what a way to celebrate, huh? Did you see some of the lineup? Mercedes Vargas and Roxi Johnson! Kane and Travis Levitt! And you know everyone is wanting to see Casey Williams and Gabriel lock horns one more time! But here’s the thing - and it’s why I’m here! Despayre - for the first time since the 2016 Blast from the Past, is teaming with a girl to face “Bulldog” Bill and Bea Barnhart! Yes, you heard me! Despayre is back in action, and that’s worth the price of admission, amIright!? Or at least as his publicist, that’s what I’m being paid to say.”
“This one has a LOT of history behind it, including the babes! The last time Candy and Bea Barnhart faced each other inside of the ring was in April of 2020 when Candy was the reigning Bombshell Roulette Champion and she had put the gold on the line against Bulldog’s wife! And I am very thrilled to tell all of you who are just tuning in that yes! Candy did indeed win that match and retain her championship! You know what that means, don’t you? If Bea is watching, I’m pretty sure she knows what it means. It means that Candy has beaten Bea. She beat her then, and she can beat her now when they have the chance to tag into the match and wrestle! But, before that can happen one must first get past the ol’ Bulldog and MY PAL, Despayre!”
“You see, when talking about history in this match, it doesn’t go any further back than Bill and Despayre! These two have not competed against each other since their days in the old AWA - the Asylum Wrestling Alliance! They only met one or two times in that period, I grant you, when Bulldog was already a seasoned veteran and Despayre was in his rookie years. They had some pretty grueling matches between them and reliving those glorious times this coming weekend is going to be GREAT! Bulldog is a big and tough bruiser, but my pal Despayre has been inside of the ring with some of the biggest and baddest! He’s met big guys like Rage and Casey Williams and come out on top! There isn’t a man who has been inside of the ring with him who hasn’t flat out stated that just getting hold of Despayre is harder than anything else!”
“But… it’s not going to be as grueling as MAYBE Bulldog and Bea might want.”
“Yes, this is going to be a Hardcore match, but only under Candyland rules and if you know my buddy and his tag team partner, you just know that means things are going to be interesting. Despayre and Candy are in this to have fun and not hurt anyone - or be hurt in return. THAT is why the Candyland rules apply. Because wrestling aside, they just want to have fun with two familiar faces and maybe come out on top as the winners while they’re at it.”
“So Bulldog? Bea? We hope you’re looking forward to this match as much as Candy and Despayre are because the 400th show is a huge deal, and the four of you are surely going to go off with a glitter bomb - er, bang! Candy is going to handle Bea, and Mister Bulldog sir? We all know what you can accomplish in that ring! But you remember what Despayre is capable of too, don’t you? You earned your stripes over the years training and fighting the biggest and baddest bruisers! Despayre on the other hand had no formal training aside from the basics. Otherwise, it’s all instinct where he’s concerned!”
“I believe Gabriel said it best when he told the world that Despayre does not prepare for any matches he’s in. He’s simply turned loose and heaven help anyone that he’s turned loose against!”
“Oh and if that Felix the Cat guy even THINKS about sticking his nose into this one, well you just remember…”

“There you are!” Despayre said as his bedroom door swung wide open and he came running in. Angel was seated on a chair with a camcorder facing him, propped up on a stack of books. Despayre turns the camera off and picks Angel up into his arms, stating, “Dad warned you about playing with his camera! Now c’mon! We have to leave for California!”
And Despayre went running out of the room, the screen winking out.
