The heart wants what it wants. That phrase has been said time and time again. It’s supposed to be sweet, it is supposed to tell everyone that no matter what happens in the world, you should follow what your heart wants because your heart will lead you to truth and happiness. But in the cold harsh reality that we all live in, and the truth is that the heart wants what it wants is a cop out. It is an excuse. An excuse the people use when they cheat on their significant other, an excuse the people use when they can act like a complete dickhead.

It is a misnomer. The saying that no one should ever care about or listen to in their right mind. The heart is something that will lead you astray. The heart is something that will cloud your emotions and make you think in circles.

A few weeks after revealing that he and his now ex-wife had broken up, Alex stood in the main area of the Wolfslair gym, and he could feel the eyes on him. He could hear the whispers. Although he and Aaron had tried to hide the relationship, it hadn’t gone well. The two of them had spent more and more time in the office together alone, and through the weeks people who knew Alex noticed small changes in him. They also noted changes in Aaron and her appearance and the way she would act. And it had started spilling over into public.

A stolen glance here, a small smile there. And the senior members of the gym had really started to notice. Alicia and Austin especially.

Aaron and Alex stood in front of the office door talking. At first, it looked like a regular talk between two people who are working together. But then it happened, Aaron giggled and put her hand up to her face before reaching out and lightly touching Alex on the arm. She smiled and turned walking away, looking over her shoulders. Alex gave her a small nod. Alex moved into the office and Austin followed. Alicia reached out to grab Austin‘s arm, but Austin turned, grabbing her hand and shaking his head.

He moved into the office behind Alex, closing the door behind him, causing Alex to turn and look at his longtime friend with a raised eyebrow. “What are you doing?” The question hung in the air and Alex simply folded his arms over his chest waiting for more of an explanation from Austin as to exactly what he meant by that question. Austin‘s nostrils flared and he stepped closer. ”What are you doing with her?”

Alex shook his head and folded his arms over his chest, leaning back against the wall. He knew that Austin wasn’t going to let this go. Austin was like a dog with a bone – when he wanted to know an answer he was never going to stop. Alex took a deep breath, closed his eyes and pushed it out before speaking, choosing his words carefully. ”What does it look like? Sonja is gone and Aaron and I fell into a relationship. These things happen. You of all people should know that, Austin.”

Austin’s eyes narrowed, his long hair was tied back in a bun and his beard had grown back. A pad that was protecting his healing collarbone was visible underneath his shirt. ”And what exactly is that supposed to mean?” Austin’s eye twitched as Alex stayed calm, leaning against the wall.

”You have no right to judge me.” Alex paused for a moment and ground his teeth together. He pushed off the wall and stepped closer to Austin. The two men coming face-to-face as Alex took a deep breath and continued. “Your wife was murdered, and now you are in a relationship with a woman who lost her husband, her husband that you had a direct hand in taking out. Because he had a direct hand in murdering your wife. And after all I’ve done for you, you want to stand here and judge me for this?”

”That’s different.”

Alex scoffs and shakes his head ”Different, yeah, yours was worse. Who do you think kept that detective off your back? Who do you think? Kept everything quiet? I did. And after you and Alicia got together I said nothing. Because you both seemed happy. So don’t I deserve the same courtesy? Don’t I deserve the same chance at happiness?”

Austin shakes his head ”Happiness? Happiness is one thing. I knew Alicia for years and we found each other. You and Aaron barely knew each other until she weaseled her way into the gym. And have you thought about how Finn will feel?” Austin raised an eyebrow. He brought up a good point. But Alex simply shook his head and stayed strong.

”Finn? I don’t care. That might seem cold to you or strange but the truth is he doesn’t factor into anything that I do in my life.” there was a certain amount of venom in Alex‘s voice as he spoke about Finn. There was clearly no love loss between the two. ”Can’t you just accept that I’m happy? We’re supposed to be friends. I took you in when your father asked me to train you. And even though he’s gone along with your stepmother, I have always taken care of you. With family Austin. Family has each other’s backs.”

He was gaslighting Austin. And Alex knew it. But it seemed to work. Austin‘s body language changed, his face softened and he let out a deep breath before shaking his head and running his hand through his hair. ”Just… be careful okay? Aaron is complicated and you and Sonja only broke up recently, the ink isn’t even dry on your divorce papers.”

”I appreciate your concern Austin” Alex smiled and offered up a small life before tapping Austin on his good shoulder. ”I’m not some lovesick teenager. Trust me. I know what I’m doing. Aaron and I are taking things slow. Nothing is going to change in Wolfslair.” Austin nodded slowly, understanding what Alex was trying to say. But Alex was wrong. He just didn’t know how wrong he was going to be.

He walked out of the office, Austin following him. He looked over and saw Aaron smiling as he moved over to her. Austin sighed heavily moved over to Alicia getting ready to tell her everything that just happened inside the office. Getting ready to reveal the relationship between the two.

Run it back

”Are you all happy? Are you all entertained? I ended Finn Whelan’s title reign, I stepped back and was ready to defend the championship against Carter. And I told each and everyone of you exactly what you wanted to hear.”

Alex sits forward. His long hair is tied back away from his face, his beard more grown out than normal. His cold blue eyes stare ahead as he tries to maintain his composure while a searing and bubbling reservoir of anger sits just below the surface.

”This company is a cesspool of egos. But I’m the only one who will admit it. I let my ego pull me in many different directions. I let my ego overrun me. But again, I’m the only one real enough to admit that. The entirety of this company is built off of the fact that so many of you believe you are better than you are. You believe your delusions of grandeur to the point where you are clouded to the realities of life. That World Championship is not meant to be held by everyone. It is not meant to be a bargaining chip handed around just because you think you should have it. It has been kept out of the hands of ungrateful people.”

“Like Miles Kasey, like Alexander Raven. These names are just a few of the examples of those of you who believe they should be at the top, but never had the talent. Carter was one of those people. But, in one moment, in one shining moment of unbelievable hubris on my part, he was able to beat me and walk out with that championship. And I can’t even have a chance to rectify the situation because he was the first defence. I beat Finn and immediately lost it to him and now I have to sit here while Carter goes onto face J2H…”

“This is indeed the darkest timeline. This entire company has fallen to a place that no longer resembles the shining beacon of honesty and dignity that this sport needed. For the longest time, I was able to point to SCW and tell the world that this is where true talent was rewarded. That the cream would rise to the top and everyone else would fall by the wayside.”

“Austin James Mercer, Ben Jordan, J2H, Kris Ryans, Ferris, myself, Mac Bane, Finn Whelan, even Michael Harris. All of these names are men who were worthy of being the World Champion. You see, a world championship is not just something you throw in the collection and say that you earned. A world championship is something that becomes part of your life. Part of your very being. So many of you don’t understand what it is to be a world champion. The type of pressure that ends up being thrust upon you because you are looked at as the best of the best. In the fact that Carter has that championship in his hands now? It makes me sick to my stomach. And the fact that he want it from me makes it even worse.”

He takes a deep breath, he’s nostrils flaring as he keeps the venom down as well as the bile that’s rising up from his stomach

”But, life goes on. Life and careers go on and that is exactly what we are going to focus on, isn’t it? The fact that this business and the company in general just breeze past all of this and keep on going towards the next event, the next person, the next big thing in the next title reign while leaving everyone else in their last week. I was forgotten once before. We all saw how that ended, didn’t we? Finn Whelan was a dominant champion. A monster in orbit statue. A man who would verbally and physically cut you down and make you nothing. nothing. It is something that so many of you just couldn’t handle. Carter couldn’t handle it, Miles couldn’t handle it. None of you could until I came along and I'm damn sure I was able to end that monster’s reign of terror.”

“And how was I thanked? How was I rewarded? I was beaten, I was shuttled aside. All because everyone was so happy that Carter finally won the big one. The big one. After how many attempts? How many times did Carter have to have opportunities thrown at him?”

“I was thanked by listening to Carter fiddle and fuck around through cutting promos against Me that made absolutely zero sense. Sitting there talking about me sitting in catering. Are you kidding me? That lame excuse that we’ve heard from so many other people like I apparently grab hold of Christian or Mark‘s hand and forced it on a fucking book to write my name down? That’s the argument that you went with, Carter? And the fact that these idiots believed it. The fact that you had people actually listening to every single word you had to say going into that match, believing that you were right and not just full of shit because you had nothing better to say?”

“You arrogant little shit. Before we had our match, you actually told people that I was jealous watching the younger generation take centre stage. Really? You beat me one time and become the world champion and suddenly you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread? You call me self absorbed? Bitch, what the fuck did you just say before our match? You are one of the most self-absorbed people in the fucking planet and you wanted to judge me?”

“Me?”

“I have been a World Champion in every company I have ever been in. I have been the standard for greatness for two decades and you want to stand there and honestly say to me that my success was like a participation trophy? You shouldn’t have beaten me. That might sound arrogant, that might sound self-righteous but you should not have beaten me. Because you aren’t the best.”

Alex gets so angry that he spits across the table. His hands slam against it as he stands up. The chair that he was sitting on kicking back across the room and hitting the wall behind him.

”And soon, well soon you’re going to see it. Do you know why? Because J2H is going to kick in your fucking skull. He’s gonna take that championship from you and you’re going to be looked at as an afterthought. Because winning a championship one time is not going to make you a legend, Carter. You can prance around like you’re the best of the best and you can tell people how great you are but when push comes to shove and the bright lights are on you and you do have that “centre stage” feeling you are going to find out what so many others have. That winning a championship and being a Champion are two completely different things.”

“Being a champion means turning up day in and day out. Being a champion means listening to all of those silly little things that people who think they’re better than you say and shrugging them off. Being a champion is going into a match showing respect to have an athletic competition instead of just ripping some arrogant little shithead’s head clean off his body, and sticking it straight up his fucking husband’s ass.”

“The truth is, you little piss ant, is that I should have been so much harder on you. But instead, I showed you respect. Too much respect. And instead of her looking at me for what I was, a teacher, a champion, a legend, you decided to spit on my fucking legacy. And in one moment you were justified. You were proven right when you were able to beat me. And you did, you did beat me. Congratulations Carter. Clap clap for the conquering hero who is able to beat someone who was a mediocre mid-card star.”

“Your words…not mine.”

“Way to bury the lead, shithead. Oh am I breaking the fourth wall? Sorry, tends to happen a little bit in this company doesn’t it?”

“But hey, at the end of the day this match is inconsequential. I beat you before I defended the championship against you. Then you beat me. Now for some reason, I’ve been booked in this match against you despite the fact that my old broken down ass just wanted to get drunk with my girlfriend and enjoy my life. But I’ve been called back again and again. I’ve been called back because I’m making your championship ring seem more interesting. A hell of a lot more interesting than facing Artie.”

“But, in the end, what would you get by beating me again? You sat there and decided to piss all over my career and then you beat me. So you belittled your own win. But I guess they don’t really count for things like that, do they? Good luck Carter. I’m still in this company. I’m still contractually obligated to turn up but that heart that I had, that soul that I had, everything that I was and everything that I am. That’s mine now. My career and my legacy doesn’t belong to this business or this company any more. Fuck SCW, fuck Christian Underwood, fuck Mark Ward and most of all fuck you. I’m out.”

Manipulation

It’s a funny thing, growing older. In some ways the adage that with age comes wisdom is completely true. But in others growing old and facing one’s own mortality, coming to terms with the fact you are not indestructible or immortal can break that wisdom and lead to a heightened level of irrational thinking.

And stupidity.

We call this a midlife crisis.

Alex had started going through this months ago. Coming to terms with the fact that no matter what he did his body was going to break down and not allow him to do the one thing on this planet that he wanted to do. So instead he decided to throw himself into everything else. Running the gym, training the next generation as well as training his oldest son while also trying to be there as a father for his two youngest that he had with Sonya.

But throwing yourself into work, especially a job that was running parallel with your dreams was never going to work. And Alex wanted more. That is where we join him. Just after his first appointment flying back in from getting experimental stem cell treatments. He had arrived home. Realizing that Sonya had already left and gone to the gym, he followed. Walking through the front door he looked up, Sonya stared at him and shook her head going into the office.

Alex knew he was in for a fight.

He walked into the office after Sonya and folded his arms over his chest ”Arent you going to ask how it went?” Sonya ground her teeth together and stayed silent. She was angry, her body language showing it clearly. Alex shook his head and sighed ”I see….you really are pissed at me aren’t you? For improving my life.” Alex shook his head and looked away.

Sonya took a deep breath and put her pen down. She sat back and tilted her head to the side staring at her husband with a mixture of anger and disappointment. ”Improving your life….if that’s all it was I would be happy. But you and I both know that’s a lie.” She paused and took a deep breath ”You and I both know that you did this because you want to get back in the ring. You want to go back to wrestling. But for how long? That treatment will make you feel better for a while but in a few months maybe a year your body is going to break down again. And then what Alex? I’m going to be left to pick up the fucking pieces again”

Alex rolled his eyes and shook his head. Now it was his time to be angry. His turn to be disappointed. ”Really? So, I go get this treatment, my body feels better than it has in about a decade, I want to get back in the ring and help train everyone here as well as maybe have a few matches and you’re going to get angry over that? Angry over me trying to live my dream again?”

”You live your dreams! You lived with them for 20 years. And now you can’t let it go. And you’re not the one who suffers. Yes, you get hurt and yes, you have to leave those dreams behind but you lived that life. Me, the kids, everyone here who cares about you? We are the ones who have to suffer through this. You’re being selfish.”

”Selfish?” Alex shook his head, shocked that she would say something like that. He swallowed hard and took a deep breath before throwing his hands in the air. ”Nice, I do something for myself and that makes me selfish. I do something because I’m sick and tired of standing around here acting like everything is fine. That’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve been acting like everything has been fine when it hasn’t been. I’m not happy, and you don’t care.”

Sonya shook her head, getting to her feet she moved past Alex. The two of them stayed silent. As Sonya left Alex shook his head. He grabbed a small coffee cup and tossed it across the room. The anger welled up inside him as he ran his hands through his hair and paced back and forth. The door opened and Aaron stepped in. She took a deep breath and shook her head before falling her arms over her chest. ”I hate that she talks to you like that”

”Yeah, me too.” Alex kept facing away from her, he took a deep breath trying to calm himself down before shaking his head and running a hand through his long hair. He turned and looked at Aaron with a small shrug.”Not much I can really do about it. Was there something you needed?”

Aaron just shook her head. ”I just came in to check on you. That’s all. I heard the argument, hell everyone out there heard the argument. I just want to make sure you are okay.”

”I’m not but I will be…”

”I should go give her a piece of my mind. How dare she talk to you like that. You were doing something for yourself. Doing something to make your body feel better after all the sacrifices you’ve made.” Aaron growled and looked toward the door.

Alex shook his head and stepped toward her. ”No. Don’t do that. Just let it go, please. Why does it matter to you anyway?”

”Because you deserve better! You deserve someone who is going to support you. Someone who isn’t going to make you feel guilty about making choices for yourself. When will you see that? The months any time you have tried to do anything for yourself, she has been right there in your face trying to stop you. I’d never do that.” Aaron shook her head and turned to leave Alex with his thoughts.

Alex shakes his head taking a deep breath as she leaves. She’s right, and part of him knows it. He’s miserable, unhappy, unfulfilled. This isn’t the type of relationship he wants or needs. A decision needs to be made. And time is running out.

Punishment

”Three times. Three times I have become the world champion of this company. After the second time and my body started breaking apart, everyone wrote me off. Everyone. I rode off into the sunset and I went home to just train the next generation. And people forgot about me. This entire company forgot about me. They welcomed others from the past back with open arms. People with the last name of Harris, J2H, Kris Ryan. They all got welcomed back with smiles and happiness.”

Alex chuckles to himself and shakes his head. Holding the SCW world heavyweight championship in his right hand he turns it toward himself and looks at it.

”But I stayed away. I stayed away and watched as Austin pissed his career down the toilet. I stayed away and watched as the young Australian from my gym came in and became a mid-card star. I watched as Alicia Lukas got treated like an afterthought. And I watched as Finn Whelan was able to become the longest-reigning world champion of all time. Over 400 days of him holding this world championship. And none of you being good enough to take it off of him. And in the beginning, I didn’t really care. In the beginning, I smiled as Finn became the world champion. Letting him believe in his little delusion that he was the be-all end-all of the professional wrestling world made me laugh with a certain amusement that I hadn’t felt in years.”

“But, that fire was still there. You know the one don’t you? I’m not arrogant enough to believe that I’m the only one who feels these things. And it’s not just in the professional wrestling world. It’s everywhere everywhere. You see it in the eyes of a retired baseball player who has become a manager on a team. They watch the young men run out onto the field and get ready to play a game that they are no longer physically able to. You see the defeat in their eyes, but there’s always that fire…that spark, that ember.”

“You see it in the eyes of different commentators on Fox Sports or ESPN while they watch an NFL game. Hell, I saw it in Tony Romo’s eyes when he was commenting on a game. He still had that fire burning. But his body could no longer keep up with it. His body had betrayed him.”

“Just like mine.”

“But, a few months ago, I decided to do something about it. I looked into everything. Different rehabilitation programs, regular medicine, and alternative medicine, and eventually I settled on stem cell research. I know stem cells are a dirty word. But they worked. The treatments made me feel 1 million times better. So good that I was able to get back in the ring. So good that I was able to come back. And when I made that decision I made that decision not just for myself but for the entire company.”

Alex loves to himself and shakes his head before getting to his feet. Pacing back and forth taking a deep breath here then continues.

”And now, my first match as the world champion. I’m going to be facing someone who lives perpetually in his brother‘s shadow, and also his girlfriends. My first title defense is going to be against someone who keeps failing to blast through that glass ceiling even though he has an entire fan base of people standing right behind him trying to push him toward it. All of the big stars in this company, all of the big names, and this is what I have to face. I can’t look forward to whoever is going to win the blast from the past because I have this other match in front of me first.”

“I have all of these amazing professional wrestlers scraping and chlorine to win a tournament to face me. Or Carter if he is able to shock the world. Alexander Raven has returned, and we have J2H floating around the company, Finn should still be trying to come for this championship if he’s able to find his balls in Kayla’s handbag. But in the end, I’m stuck facing Carter and his extended family.”

“And I warned you.”

“I warned you to your face Carter what I was going to do to you and your extended family. And the company listened and instead of keeping me away from them, they put me against one of them. Kind of funny isn’t it? I’m laughing about it, but I can promise we won’t be. You Carter, and you LJ, and hell Miles might have some feelings about it. None of them are going to be amusement at what I’m about to do to you.”

Alex slowly smiles and continues taking a deep breath.

”But the question is, should I feel bad about what I’m about to do to LJ? I mean think about it LJ, if it wasn’t for Carter and this situation that he finds himself in would your path have crossed mine? Possibly, but this soon? While I am the world champion? I don’t think so. You have been put in an impossible situation. Facing the New World champion who just beat a guy who many thought was unbeatable. And you haven’t been able to do anything of note the entire time you’ve been here.”

“Carter has been a champion and also just won an elimination chamber to earn a shot at Me. Your brother Miles has been bouncing all over the place winning championships and trying his hardest to break through that same glass ceiling. Carter has. Those two might be failures, but at least they’re failures who have ambition. You on the other hand seem to lack ambition and our content with playing second fiddle to everyone. Whether that is your brother or your girlfriend. And now that I think about it if I wanted a real challenge, the company should have booked Alexandra against me not you.”

“I am going to hurt you. Very very bad.”

“And it isn’t even your fault that this is happening LJ. You are just in the wrong place at the wrong time and you are part of the wrong family. I don’t dislike you and I don’t hate you. I have no personal issue with you whatsoever I don’t even have a professional issue with you. You are a young kid trying to rise up that ladder and become something greater than you are. The only problem is you lack the talent to do it. You lack the killer instinct to do it. You are exactly the same as your brother and your brother-in-law. And now you’re going to have to face a world champion who is very very pissed off. Good luck kid. You are going to need it.”

Heart Shaped Box

There is a stigma that goes with seeking help. If you have any type of depression or anxiety seeking help for that often leads people to believe that you are mentally unstable or something is wrong. But, seeking help is never a negative. In fact, it takes great strength to realise when you need help and even more strength to ask for it. Going to therapy was never something that Alex thought about. It was a new revelation for him, being strong enough to go and talk about how he felt. It was something that his wife had brought up to him on a few different occasions and this time he had completely agreed.

In the beginning, it was hard. Alex struggled to open up. To talk about anything. But as the weeks went on, he slowly started to talk. At first, it was about simple things – the struggles of balancing his work and his personal life with his children. Eventually, it moved on to feeling like he was letting his kids down.

But then there was more. Struggling with the prospect of never being able to do what he loved to do again. Feeling like his body was betraying him. The anger that he felt deep inside himself as he came to the realisation that he was not immortal. That he was not invulnerable. And that is where we were at now. Alex closed his eyes and took a deep breath; he was leaning forward on the small leather couch sitting across from his therapist. A lovely older man with a British accent. His hair was cut short and parted down the left side as it swung over the back of his head covering a small bald spot on the top of his crown.

He wore wire framed glasses and had a five o’clock shadow. He looked like every single stereotypical therapist you have seen in a movie. His office was very bland. A few bookshelves with self-help and psychology books going from left to right alphabetically sat along the far wall, as well as some statues and awards scattered across the place with pictures of the therapist with friends and family.

Alex shook his head again, clasping his hands together and staring ahead as if he was staring into space. “A job like mine, being largely physical…it takes a toll on you. It destroys your body and it destroys your spirit. But it still doesn’t mean that I’m not sad to see it all end. Especially since it wasn’t on my terms. And I don’t think my wife understands that.”

”Empathy isn’t always easy to come by. In fact, some people really struggle with it. But it’s not with everything. Physical pain or a loss in the family with some kind of death or terminal illness, that is something that people can empathise with. The loss of a job or the ability to do that job? It’s not always as simple as that to understand it.” Alex gave a small nod as the therapist closed his notepad and got to his feet.

Alex stood up as well, shaking his therapist's hand knowing that they were out of time. He turned to move towards the door as he left and contemplated the therapist's words. He was right – not everyone can empathise straight away with any given situation. It takes time and understanding.

Alex drove back to the gym. as he pulled into the parking lot and stopped his car. He took a deep breath. His hand started shaking, his heart started racing. This had been happening more and more. This feeling of dread and anxiety that would overcome him before entering the gym.

It was hard, seeing all of their bright young faces. Their careers ahead of them or in some cases they were in the middle of them. Looking at people who had known for years like Austin and Alicia, ones that he had stood beside and helped become stars. They could still do what Alex could not. And it made him physically ill. It filled him with sadness and pain as well as anger that he couldn’t get rid of. An anger that made him surge with heat and fury. Something he never felt before.

With a groan and a grunt, he got out of his car, closing the door and grabbing his small briefcase. He moved up and threw the main door and around to the office. He looked over with a smile giving Austin a small nod as he saw the hulking tattooed former world champion doing drills with the young kids. Getting them to run the ropes, getting them to do front rolls, getting them to do flatpack bumps. All the things that Alex used to show, it was now Austin‘s job. He then looked over to the grappling mats where Alicia was sitting back on her heels on her knees, explaining different submissions and how to get in and out of them with the female talent. Alex took a deep breath and forced a smile. He was happy but at the same time there was something inside him that hated what he saw. It made him feel irrelevant and useless.

He was jealous. Jealous that they were still able to do what they all loved to do and he couldn’t.

Austin called Alex over, and Alex shook his head and gave him a thumbs up before going into the office putting his briefcase down. Sonja looked up from her laptop and smiled with a nod ”Hey, how was it?”

”It was good, talked through a few things, it’s really helping. Talking to someone who is impartial and not swayed either way…” Alex sat down across from Sonja. She smiled and nodded at him and the two sat and went about their work, Alex looking through his emails before seeing one sent from his surgeon. An advertisement for stem cell research. He leaned closer, his eyes moving across the words and all the information. ”Hmmm…”

Sonja slowly looked up from her laptop with an eyebrow raised, ”Something interesting?”

Alex nodded and sat back, twirling a pen in his fingers. ”My orthopedic surgeon sent me some information on stem cells…..he seems to think it might work…”

”Work for?”

”My knee….it could give me…well…everything.”

Sonja took a sharp inhale and got to her feet, pushing out the breath in a way that made her seem even more annoyed than normal. Her nostrils flared and she stepped forward, getting closer to Alex as she leaned down across his desk. She grabbed the top of the laptop and slowly closed it. Alex turned his head, looking up at his wife as she clearly wanted his attention.

”What?”

Sonja shook her head and uttered one simple word. ”No”

”No?” Alex replied and raised an eyebrow.

Sonja shook her head again and leaned closer. ”Alex, please, don’t even think about it. You’re retired. Going through something like this, these treatments, they might work or they might not, but at the end of the day it still means that you’re going to go back to something that you’ve spent a long time trying to get over and end. You should just keep up with your therapy and get back to doing what we have been building. Keeping this gym going.”

He took a deep breath and shook his head, ”But I-”

”But nothing! You’re retired…accept it…please…”

Sonja stormed out of the office leaving Alex sitting at his desk. Alex shook his head and stared out the window, not hearing or seeing Aaron enter and shut the door behind her. ”Hey…you…you ok?”

Alex flipped his laptop open and growled back, ”Yeah…fine…did you need something?”

Aaron swallowed hard and looked down, she seemed sheepish and almost hurt that Alex snapped at her. She shook her head and turned grabbing the door ,”No…sorry…I…nevermind”

Alex sighed heavily and stood up. ”Wait…” Aaron turned and Alex folded his arms over his chest. ”I’m sorry, I was being rude…I’m not okay, but there’s nothing that can be done…I guess I’m going a little crazy with the whole retirement thing….that’s all.”

Aaron nodded slowly and sighed stepping forward closing the distance. ”Yeah, stepping away feels…wrong. Like a part of you is missing…and it’s a part you always want back, one you’ll do almost anything to get back. I get it…If you need to talk, ever…I’m here.” Alex gave a small nod and a smile, it was nice, knowing that someone understood, Aaron went to leave and Alex cleared his throat.

”Hey…thanks….I appreciate it…” Aaron shot him a small smile and closed the door, leaving Alex in the office alone as he opened the laptop to read more information about the Stem cells

The Answer

San Francisco, California. The opposite side of the country from where Alex Jones currently calls home. The opposite side of the country from where his gym and home are located. He takes a deep breath, slowly walking along the walkway where he can look across the bay and see the Golden Gate Bridge. He stops taking a deep breath.

”Well, that wasn’t what everyone expected was it? The main event of Inception, ending in a disqualification. I get it, people don’t understand why it happened. Honestly? Frustration is something that can get into anyone’s mind. It can eat away at you and it can cause you to lose part of yourself. And, I did. Finn and I went at it and at the end of the day, I could have thrown that chair down, and he and I could have continued the match. I could be standing here as the new Sin City Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion.”

“I want to be really clear on this since a lot of you don’t understand, or don’t seem to care. But no, I didn’t ask Aaron as a fixer to come down to the ring and get involved in my World Championship match. I didn’t ask her to go after anyone or throw a chair into the ring or anything. Why would I do that? Why would I destroy my own shot at being the World Champion?”

“Do I look like an idiot? With how long I’ve been in this, with how long I have been winning world championships and being a part of all of these different companies, you really believe I wouldn’t be smart enough to know what was about to happen?”

“This issue between myself and Finn is not over. Because coming up at Blaze of Glory I get another opportunity at Finn. And there’s a lot of people who are complaining about this. You see Andrea Hernandez has to defend her championship inside an Elimination Chamber. Meanwhile, on the men’s side the elimination chamber is for a shot at Finn. Or, a shot at Me when I become the world champion. And I keep hearing the little whispers, the little complaints, everyone wondering why I’m getting another shot at Finn and why I don’t have to be in the chamber.”

Alex rolls his eyes and throws his arms in the air. He has black bandanna tied around his long hair that flows down his shoulders and his back. A black and red Wolfslair shirt over the top of a pair of baggy blue jeans.

”it’s simple. We don’t have to be. Finn has been the champion long enough that beating everyone in a chamber like that wouldn’t do anyone any favours whatsoever. And at this point in my career, with everything I’ve done, I’ve earned the right to call my own goddamn shots. So, while the rest of you are all scrambling over each other to get a shot at myself or Finn, I’m going to be doing everything I can to beat the shit out of that arrogant little pissant and take the SCW World Heavyweight Championship. And I’m going to do it at the biggest show of the year. I’m going to become a three time World Champion in this company.”

“Yes, three times. And that would be just in this company. I have won so many championships that my trophy room needed to be expanded. And coming up at Blaze of Glory, I have a chance to add to it. Meanwhile, there are a list of hopefuls, stepping into the chamber, all getting ready to beat the living hell out of each other to earn the right to face the World Champion. And that is how it should be. The SCW World Championship should be looked at as a – surprise – something to be earned. Something to be fought for. People like me have earned the right to come back and say that we want a shot at that title. We don’t take back doors into it.”

“And that is what everyone will be fighting for in that chamber, including my opponent this week.”

“And trust me Carter, this match is more exciting to me than you realise. See, I’m not gonna sit here and bullshit my way through this. I’ve never been one to do that. I’m not going to Big Brother/Little Brother you. I’m not going to go down that same road that others do and start spouting off some nonsense about how you haven’t done anything in this business. I’ve seen plenty of what you’ve been able to accomplish in your time under the SCW banner. You started off in SCU, and you grew from there. You’ve done everything you can to get your name out there and be viewed as a star and the truth is, you are one. People love you, Carter.”

“You come out to the ring and people applaud and cheer. They get on their feet and they clap their hands and they stomp their feet and they do everything they possibly can to show their appreciation and love for you. Getting the fans behind you in a way that you have? It's not easy. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things that you can possibly do in your life. But you’ve been able to do it. You’ve been able to do it and when you won the Internet Championship off of Peter Vaughn. I sat at home watching that show and I saw the entire crowd explode.”

“It was amazing.”

Alex nods slowly and gives a small round of applause before taking a deep breath and continuing.

”I’m not someone who is delusional enough to say that you can’t beat me. Anyone can beat anyone else on any given night. But against me, you are definitely Ice skating uphill. You might think that my focus is going to be just on Finn and getting that World Championship. But what if I told you there is a motivation for me to face you and to beat you that goes well beyond that World Championship? Intriguing right? You see Carter, I’m very happy that Miles was able to find you. I’m happy that you two are in love. And you are, we all can see it. The way he looks at you, the way you look at him, you have a storybook romance and a storybook love that most people should envy.”

“But, there is a small problem with it. You see Carter, Miles was a member of my family. He was someone who I affectionately called one of my kids. Miles, along with Lachlan Kane, Sierra Williams, Aiden Reynolds, Johanna Kreiger, Kallie Reznik… they are all my kids. Ones that I have had a hand in training and trying to build up as champions. And there was a time where Miles simply disappeared. We all know this story.”

“He took off without saying a word to any of us. Took off to see you. Now, I’ve never been in the way of anyone finding true love, but the fact he just walked away without saying anything to any of us was a bullshit move. And nobody, nobody took that harder than me. Finn might like to play the victim like he was so hurt by the fact Miles walked away, but we all know that self-centred piece of shit only used it as an excuse. But me, Carter? I was hurt by it. He was a member of my family, a member of my gym. I gave all of my attention and all of my knowledge to that kid and he spat in my goddamn face. And that happened when he started seeing you.”

“Now, it might not be any of your problem. I’m very very aware that this whole thing was probably due to Miles being an immature little dickhead. But at the end of the day, we let him back in and he spat in our faces again when he attacked Finn. Now, I stabbed Finn in the front. I told him I wanted a championship match and went after him. Miles, on the other hand, stabbed him in the back. A big no no. And you, instead of helping to guide him toward a better outcome, instead you blindly followed him.”

Alex rolls his eyes and shakes his head before leaning close

””Carter, let me tell you a little something. Something that you might not get. You are here in your little fantasy land where you believe that love between you and Miles is both of you just blindly agreeing with the other person following them around like a little lost puppy dog. Avoiding conflict wherever you can and just smiling for the cameras and smiling for your family and never having an argument between yourself and your significant other. But real love? Real love is pain. Real love is walking through that pain and telling your partner and the person that you love when they are being a complete raging arsehole. That is something that you as a human being failed at.”

“You failed to call Miles out on his bullshit. You failed to be the partner that he needed instead of being the partner that you thought he wanted. Now, I don’t think you’re a bad person, Carter. I think you are a good human being. You have an amazing heart, and you show it every single time you get in the ring. Even if you are outmatched physically, which you are most of the time. Even if you are outmatched by someone with more experience, like you are most of the time. You still put everything on the line. And that’s what you’ll have to do against me.”

“But, you and Miles have a lot of things in common. One of which being that you are constantly banging your heads against a glass ceiling. Everyone talks about his potential but I want to talk about yours. Your potential. The potential that you refuse to acknowledge except and push push. And hell, the truth is that if you and Miles had gone about things differently, you could’ve come to Wolfslair…”

“You could have trained with the champions. But instead, all you are is a former Internet Champion who has had many many other chances to step up and become the main event star that a lot of us saw you as. But exactly like Miles you just squander opportunity after opportunity and end up being a nobody. And it breaks my heart. It really does, Carter. I know that you should be better than this. I know that you should be more than this. But the fact that you’re facing me this week, well, I have a lot of issues I need to work out with you. And it isn’t just the Miles stuff.”

Alex closes his eyes and instantly his demeanour changes. As his eyes open up again, he looks cruel, cold, like something is wrong.

”Right now. you are standing in the way of me getting to that World Championship. Momentum is everything in this business, Carter. I’ve been around long enough to know what happens when someone breaks that momentum. And facing you? If I beat you and steamroll over you like I know I can, then that will give me momentum going against Finn. If I lose to you? I break that momentum. So what do you think is going to happen, Carter? You know how much I have left in the tank. You know how angry and how frustrated someone can get when they think that their championship aspirations are being taken for granted.”

“So, I have to ask, what do you think is going to happen? What do you think is going to be the line that I will cross? Because when it comes to that championship there isn’t a line that I won’t cross. And you are standing in my way. You might not think it, but you being booked in this match against me is you being an obstacle. And I have made a career out of removing obstacles. I have made a career out of doing everything that I possibly can to get world championships and this is going to be no different. If I have to destroy you to get that momentum to go and beat Finn and take that championship at Blaze of Glory, I will do it. And I’ll do it without an inch of remorse.”

“I am not like you.”

“You are a good person. A kindhearted person. Someone who is filled with respect and love who will do everything they can the right way. I’m not like that, Carter. I am not a good man. I’m not a good person. I have done a lot of things in this business and my personal life that I should be ashamed of that I’m simply not. It is all a means to an end and I will destroy you to get to Finn. And if you somehow drag your broken carcass to the elimination chamber and win it? Then you’ll be facing me again. But this time I will be a World Champion. Because unlike you and unlike Miles? I know how to actually reach my potential.”

Gone away

It was 5 am. Alex Jones had arrived at the gym, turning on the lights, cleaning the mats, and getting all of the computers turned on and ready to go. Going through paperwork, making sure everything was in its place. He closed his eyes and shook his head, his heart sinking as he looked over at one of the rings inside the main room. His fingertips stand still on the canvas, His other hand moved up and slides across the bottom rope.

He pulled himself up onto the apron, stepping into the ring. He leaned on the ropes, he had an urgent inside himself to start running across the ring, to run the ropes, to hit them like he used to, but as he took a step he felt his knee click. His body popped a few times in different places. He shook his head sliding from the ring to the floor and walking over to the large metal roller door, leaning down to unlock it he slid it straight up in the air waiting for everyone else to arrive. He moved back to the office. Sitting down with the pile of paperwork in front of him, he went about his day.

As everyone arrived, he looked up through the window, giving them a small nod of acknowledgment. From students, to professionals, to members of the gym who were in his inner circle. They all received the same greeting. From Finn Whelan to Austin James Mercer and Alicia Lukas, they all got the same small head knot. Even his wife Sonja.

Alex just went about doing paperwork sitting at his desk sipping a coffee and showing no emotion even as he heard the sounds that always emanated from the gym. The sound of talking, laughter, weights hitting each other and being lifted as well as small competitions being run on the grappling mats and in the ring. It was a sound that Alex loved, a sound that used to fill him with so much happiness and something he would usually partake in. But right now? He couldn’t bring himself to even look outside, he couldn’t bring himself to look at any of the wrestling rings that he had set up all the grappling mats. He couldn’t even bring himself to talk to anyone.

And there were only two people who knew about his injuries. Two people who knew that it was the end. Finn and Sonja.

But, it wouldn’t be long before everyone else realized the truth. It wouldn’t be long till the whispers started and the rumors filled the gym. Things like this do not go unnoticed. People would see that Alex was not out there, that he was not getting in the ring, that he was not being physical and active. Even though he would work out while no one else was around, it was all cardio and weight work. He hadn’t stepped inside a professional wrestling ring in weeks.

He signed a piece of paper moving it across his desk before hearing the click of the door and locking up. Sonja stepped in slowly smiling and moving across to her desk. She looked down realising that all the paperwork that had been sitting on her side of the office was now on his side and was done. She shook her head and folded her arms over her chest. Her long blonde hair tied back in a bun. ”I appreciate that you have done so much paperwork and made my life easier. But, isn’t there anything else better that you could do with your time?”

”Like what?” his answer back was short and sharp. There was almost no emotion in it.

Sonja sighed and shook her head stepping to his desk, she placed her hands flat on the top of it and leaned forward ”Oh, I don’t know, maybe go out there and help some of these talented youngsters that we have under our roof? Give them some of that knowledge that you’ve accumulated over the last 20 years?” Her voice oozed with authority and a hint of sarcasm. Alex shook his head continuing to sign more papers and read through them. Sonja, clearly frustrated, slammed her hands on the desk a little harder trying to get his attention.

Alex took a deep breath and sat back ”What?….” his voice was still flat and emotionless. Almost cold in its delivery matching Alex‘s demeanour

Sonja shook her head and folded her arms over her chest ”Really? We’re going through this again?” This isn’t the first time you’ve been told that you can’t wrestle and every single other time you’ve gotten up got in the ring and at least helped these kids. You even returned last time.”

Alex took a deep breath and sat back ”It’s not the same. Every single other time it’s been an advisement that I should retire. But at the end of the day, I’ve had a medical release and I’ve been able to go back to work. Every other time it has been a suggestion. But not this time. My doctor wouldn’t even entertain the thought of signing a medical release to allow me to go back to work. It’s over Sonja. I’m done.” Alex got to his feet, moving to the filing cabinet to put away some of the papers. Standing and turning his back on his wife.

Sonja ground her teeth together and took a long deep breath. ”Yeah. I get it. Every other time you’ve been told you shouldn’t be doing something. It was just a suggestion. This time, there’s a finality to it. Being told you shouldn’t do something and being told you can’t do something are two completely different things. But does that mean that you’re going to hide in here for the rest of your life? That you’re not going to go out there and actually help these kids?”

Alex’s breath hitched in his throat, his life and problems being laid out like that right in front of him by the woman who was supposed to love him and support him hit him in the chest. He slammed the filing cabinet door shut and turned. ”Help them? How? By sitting on the ring apron or on the top rope and telling them all these different stories about the good old days when I could do what I’m trying to teach them to do? They need to be shown, physically shown. And it’s way better if someone like Austin or Finn does that. Or Alicia. Help look at what Finn has been able to do with Miles. What Austin has been doing with Aiden. Or Alicia and Aaron have with Kallie….” Alex trailed off and took a breath calming himself down

Sonja stepped closest reaching out and taking Alex’s hands in hers ”And you can’t contribute? You can’t go out there and tell them anything about your career or what you’ve accomplished?”

”And what would that accomplish?” He raised his voice and stepped closer ”Forcing me to be around all of them, around a ring and around the business. What would it accomplish aside from making me miserable?” He looks to the window and places his hands on his hips ”What do you want me to say? What do you want to hear? That I’m scared? That I’m depressed?….well….I am…ok?…I am… and I have no idea what to do about it”

Sonja, caught off guard by Alex and his passionate confession took a deep breath, stepped forward, and just wrapped her arms around him. The two of them stand in silence unsure of what to say to each other.

Pitiful.

”Well, what a return that was. One filled with a chance to win and go after whoever the winner was going to be in the world championship match. I said "whoever" the winner was going to be, but I called it then and I knew I was going to be right. There was no way in hell Miles was going to be able to beat them. Meanwhile, I had to come back after a lengthy layoff and get thrown right into an over-the-top-rope battle royale to try and earn a shot at whatever championship I wanted”

Alex can’t help it chuckle, his long dark hair tied back in a bun as his trimmed beard sits close to his skin only showing a few glimpses of the small streaks of silver that had formed since we last saw him.

”And, I wanted a shot at the world championship. A shot at Finn. See, other people have issues with him but he and I have our own history. Something that I’m sure a lot of you are going to end up hearing about about. But the fact remains that my first match back was that Battle Royale. I had the same chance that everyone else did going into that match to win and earn my shot. But I failed. I got my arse dumped out onto the floor and I watched as the chance flew out the window. But, something that you all have to remember is that one on one I’m still the baddest motherfucker on the planet”

“We saw the return of Connor Murphy, we’ve seen the rise of Miles‘s little brother. And we’ve seen as Finn stays on top of the pile and everyone else is too scared to challenge him directly.”

“Let may be very clear here. I’m not here to just have some kind of nostalgia run where everyone gets to see me a few times, applaud me, and watch as I ride off into the sunset. This isn’t a situation where I want to come back and go out in front of a live crowd wave my hand in the air thank everyone for their time and effort in watching Me and then leave. It’s not what I want. It’s not what anyone wants. I’m back and I’m back to take heads and championships. I’m back to have one more run as a world champion in a main event star. A chance to prove why I was put in the Hall of Fame.”

“And a chance to prove that I’m better than Finn. That I’m better than all the other names that have been floating around this company while I’ve been sitting at home.”

“How quickly people forget. But the truth is, I don’t blame people for it. I don’t blame most of you for forgetting the kind of man I am. I don’t blame you for forgetting that I came into this company and led a young Austin James Mercer to the world championship. I don’t even blame people for forgetting that I stepped forward and became a double champion when I beat Mac Bane for the world championship while I was the roulette champion. And while we sit back and see that he along with recent Hall of Famer Mark Cross and a whole host of others never returned to the company or gave a shit about SCW. I’m still here, and I’ve always been here.”

Alex growls and sits forward. He wears a red and black Wolfslair t-shirt and black jeans with black boots. A leather jacket sits on the back of the chair as he sits down and stares forward.

”I love this company. And I have noticed that while a whole bunch of stars have left no one has really stepped up to become the next big name. Finn returned and has done an excellent job as the world champion but where is everyone else? Why hasn’t Fenris come back? Why is J2H happy being Kevin Carter‘s bitch? Why has Alexander Raven disappeared? Why is Ben Jordan only floating around instead of being one of the baddest people on the planet like we all know he can be?”

“And why are we pretending that Miles Kasey is a main event star?”

Alex shakes his head, pushing off the table. He gets to his feet and steps sideways, grabbing a beer and popping it open before taking a sip and placing it back on the kitchen counter in front of him.

”Look, Miles, kid, I have watched you try everything in your power to break through that glass ceiling that seems to be above you. Everything. You came to ask and you wanted to get better. But while everyone else was committed to getting better, you have been committed to doing nothing. Your entire career became an afterthought after you met Carter. Now, I’m not one to speak ill of someone’s love life. And I’m glad you have found someone who loves you. I’m glad you have that relationship. Everyone deserves to have that one person in their life that feels like they complete them.”

“However, when that relationship almost completely derails everything you’ve done all because you couldn’t be bothered to talk to the people around you there is a problem. And you sat there and acted like you were a victim. You walked back into the gym and we all welcomed you with open arms because of thin. Because he went to bat for you because he told us that you deserved another chance because you were just a young dumb kid in love and you wanted to come home.”

“And like a pack of blazing dip shits, we believed him. And we believed you.”

“And then what happened? Just as you were getting accepted back into the fold, just as we looked at you as one of us again and you started to get that Park mentality what did you do? You walked out there you attacked Finn from behind numerous times all to get a shot at his world championship. now, while I admire your determination to become a world champion and while I admire the steps that you were taking the fact that you did it to Finn is the problem.”

Alex shakes his head, clearly disappointed in the steps that Miles took in getting to Finn and trying to become the world champion.

”The worst part about all this is that you just didn’t get it. Finn and myself and everyone else in that gym weren’t pissed off at you because you wanted a world championship match. We all want to be the champion that is why we do this. We were pissed off because you decided to go about it in a way that dishonored him and dishonored you. And when confronted with this fact, when presented with the idea that you were wrong instead of realizing it and apologizing you double down and then try to act like the victim.”

“The victim…”

“Acting like we all didn’t have your back from day one”

“Acting like none of us would have been there for you if you had asked. Acting like Finn would have said no if you asked for a shot. You stopped around like a child talking about how everyone thought you were a joke and how you needed to prove us all wrong. Miles, I never thought you were a joke. The years every single one of us has been talking about your potential. Talking about how you could rise up and be a world champion. Talking about how all you needed to do was believe in yourself.”

“Attacking someone from behind isn’t believing in yourself. Especially when that person is someone who let you into his home, who did everything he could to help you, that isn’t an act of someone living up to their potential that is an act of somebody trying to take a shortcut. And we have never been about taking shortcuts. You come into this company, you come into this business and you earn everything that you get. Earned his shots at that world championship, and I earned my world championships. Hell, even Kayla Richards who you seem so happy with throwing under the bus because she doesn’t like you earned everything that she has. And that’s coming from me and I hate the bitch”

“But you? You whine and cry and act like everything should be handed to you on a silver platter because you have skills. Yes Miles you are an incredible professional wrestler but it means nothing, and I mean nothing, if you can’t string it together and get your head out of your ass. Even Carter, Carter has his head on straight. Carter is someone who could be a world champion just like you but he has way more of an upside because unlike you he doesn’t play the victim card.”

Alex can’t help but laugh to himself as he folds his arms over his chest and leaned back against the wall.

”Look at everything you’ve done. Attacking him from behind, deliberately distracting him so he would lose matches. Costing him the mixed tag team championships. And what was it all for? What did it accomplish miles? You got that main event and you had a chance at the world championship but in the end, you failed. You failed. I’ll say it again again just in case it hasn’t drilled into that ignorant skull of yours.”

“You. Failed.”

“And it cost you almost everything. Friends, family, respect. You have Carter, and he loves you, and that’s great. In your mind, you’re probably thinking you don’t need anyone else. And maybe that’s true. But you had brothers and sisters, members of a pack, all of us ready to cheer you on and be behind you.”

“Now, I haven’t kicked you out of the gym and I allow you to train there because part of Me still believes you can be redeemed. Part of Me still believes that you can wake up to yourself and stop being such an arrogant dickhead. And yes, a small part of it is that Finn and others like to see you suffer because you come into the gym and no one wants anything to do with you.”

“And since I know you’re going to bring it up, that’s super kick was for your own good.”

“I wasn’t going to sit back and allow you to constantly get involved in Finn‘s shit and think that you can get away with it. So I kicked you in the head. I didn’t apologize and I don’t plan to. Just like I won’t apologize for giving you the tough love that you sorely need. I’m gonna get in the ring with you Miles and I’m going to beat the hell out of you. And maybe, just maybe you’ll learn something.”

History is a flat circle

”Move, now. Get up, hit the ropes and drop down. No Slackers.”

Alex stands on the ring apron, his arms folded over his chest. A black and red wolfslair shirt on and a pair of training shorts. Inside the ring some of the newer trainees where rotating with each other, hitting the ropes, dropping down and leapfrogging and switching.it up. Since his loss to Mac Bane he had been a domineering and almost dictator like personality. Working his trainees and team mates to the bone.

He sneers and shakes his head jumping down from the apron. Charlie Jones, his younger sister, manager of Wolfslair Orlando and now the General Manager of upstart promotion Pro Wrestling Excellence steps next to him as Alex looks over at Johanna Krieger and Aiden Reynolds, two international stars signed to PWS Apex and SCW respectively. ”Get in and show them.” Johanna and Aiden look at each other and get up and they start to roll with the trainees who are out of their depth, one by one Johanna takes their back sinking in a choke and Aiden locks in a variety of limb locks. Cries of pain ring out and Alex shakes his head.

”Going a little hard on them aren’t we?” Alex raises an eyebrow as Charlie turns her back and leans on the ring apron. Alex scoffs and lays his hands flat on the mat, his eyes tracing back and forth as Johanna and Aiden step down from the ring and go back to working out with Austin and Alicia. ”They aren’t going to get any better just being beaten down and then beaten up by your more..elite names.Alex groans and rolls his eyes pushing off the ring

”That’s it for the day, hit the showers. Use some ice” The trainees all groan in pain and gingerly move from the ring as Alex lets out a sigh looking at his sister. ”Steel sharpens steel Charlie. I need to get these kids ready, they need to know that they aren’t going to break like glass” He moves away leaning down grabbing some of the workout gear packing it up as various other workout sessions go on without him, Alicia and Johanna rolling on the mats trading submissions, Austin and Aiden having a contest involving cardio.

Numerous others, names we have not seen or know who work in the independants also train and seem to be working hard. Alex smiles slowly as Charlie’s next words ring out in his ears. ”But they aren’t steel yet, you can break them and not in the good way.”

Dallas Texas, 12 Years Ago

22 year old Alex Jones stood in the ring, there were other young men around him, Alex had two years of training and in ring experience behind him, he wasn’t sure about the others. Outside the ring, an aging Texan legend “Wild” Bill Harrison stood with his arms crossed. His long black hair that used to be a thick mane connecting with his handlebar mustache was now thinning on top and tied back.

Even in his 60’s he was a commanding presence. A mountain of a man at six foot five and still in the high two hundred pounds. He let out a grunt, one that seemed to be annoyed and angry.

”Pathetic.”

With that one word the other trainees all seemed to look defeated, all but Alex who raised an eyebrow and pushed his chest forward. Bill circled the ring, his footsteps very heavy. ”You all have no heart at all. I don’t even know why you’re in my ring. Some of you have experience in companies but it just shows how soft your generation is.” The air was thick with tension, Alex breathed deep as Bill growled locking eyes with the young grappler. ”Indian squats….go till you can’t stand...you pussies.” Bill blew his whistle. Alex sneered and started doing squats, the others growl and already look defeated. But Alex didn’t care, he was driven and ready…

Pain was only temporary….

”Alex?....are you fucking listening to me?”

He snapped out of it, turning back to Charlie who raised her eyebrows, her long black hair was tied back away from her face, her eyes raising as she tilted her head waiting for her older brother to acknowledge her. Alex just slowly smiled and gave her a nod. ”I hear you….Charlie, you remember what we went through…” He stared right into her eyes, he could see a switch get flipped, her eyes darted to the side, the memories seemed painful for her.

He stepped forward putting his hand on her shoulder, Charlie flinched and pulled away. ”Yeah, I remember. I also remember it was hard on Dylan, I remember I quit wrestling for six years because of it…” Her voice trailed off, this was one of the first times she had brought up Dylan, one of the first times his name had been uttered inside the halls of Wolfslair New York. ”Dylan didn’t….he didn’t do what he did because of the training, it was because of things outside wrestling, outside the life…you know that…”

There was an awkward silence, Charlie swallowed and snapped out of it looking over at all the trainees, laughing and mingling. Alex wasn’t yelling at them, cursing at them or trying to belittle them, he just smiled. That was the difference. Context. He knew when to be hard on everyone, when to be soft, when to listen and when to talk. Charlie gave a small nod and looked over at them to. ”Yeah, I guess you’re right, besides you’re not like the guy who trained us. You actually care….I wish Dylan was alive to see it”

Alex swallowed, he tried to hide it all, the emotional impact of thinking about their deceased younger brother. The feeling of coming home to find him on the floor, Charlie kneeling next to him, cradling his head in her lap, tears streaming down her face and screaming for help. A chill went up his spine, but he shook his head before offering a smile to his sister. ”I think he…would have loved it here…” Charlie let out a sigh and folded her arms over her chest, silence was all that was between them now. But, they both knew….Alex was right.

Deja Vu

”I could have sworn I have done this song and dance before. Recently in fact…”

Alex Jones, the (now) former SCW Heavyweight champion, sits in front of a chessboard. Not a traditional one, no. The pieces are modeled after various figures in greek mythology, his left hand moving over to the knight, modeled to look like Area, the god of war. He slides it up and to the side, in the L motion, dropping it in the middle of the board.

”This is the first match of the new year. New year new me right? That’s how the saying goes. New year's resolutions and all that jazz?. The truth is, I don’t need to change. I’m fucking incredible the way I am. I am now a two time SCW World champion. An eleven time world champion. And I get it, I do, So many of you can claim to be a forty seven time world champion in a whole host of different companies that no one gives a shit about and haven’t been active in decades. I’m looking at you Matt Knox. But me? Look at my history. Look at the companies that I have been the champion of, that I have risen to the goddamn top of. Aside from SCW…”

“There’s Honor wrestling, twice I became the champion there. I was the first Honor wrestling champion, the first one to hold that belt high in the air. Oh, by the way, completely unrelated but, welcome Finn Whelan to SCW everyone….”

Alex winks and moves a pawn forward before clearing his throat.

”The fact remains I held that title twice, once as it’s first champion and then again as the most important to bring that company back from the brink oif death, buying it some extra time to get the SCW merger done. But, then there’s WWH. Everyone knows that company, for better or worse. Myself, Austin, Kat Jones, Mercedes Vargas, Alicie, Sierra, Finn, we have all been in that company over the years. And in my case, in Kats case, in Finns case, we all held the WWH world title. There is IWF, the company everyone sees finally popping up all over twitter? Yeah I was the Imperial champion there too, not that anyone would knows….”

“Record deletion is kinda lame…”

“But I was at the top there, and the XHF network? That giant conglomerate of companies? Guess what? The original XHF? I was the world champion there to. That is just a small sample of the world titles that I have held, the companies I have represented and been at the top of. This is what I have done my entire career. And while some of you are so narrow minded you don’t see the scope of the wrestling world and are happily sitting there thinking SCW is the only wrestling company that matters, people like myself have been on top everywhere we have gone..”

“So, while some of you want to act like the new year is some kind of magical reset button, I’m here to tell you that it’s bullshuit and you’re just as untalented as you were last year…”

He smirks and shakes his head, moving another Ares knight before turning and getting up from the table, a walk off checkmate that he didn’t even need to exclaim as we hear a groan from the other side of the table, a decidedly feminine one as a few choice German expletives are heard moments later.

”And I have to be honest, most of you have to know by now that Mac Bane is counting his lucky stars, he’s keeping four leaf clovers, he’s looking for Rabbits to steal their feet, cause he knows how lucky he is to not only get out of that fourway with the title but to also have not only won it off me but also do it in a match where I don’t even get my rematch. I want you all to think about that for a moment. I beat Mac Bane, I beat him a second time in a rematch that HE wanted. Then, when he is able to get handed another opportunity this match conveniently has a stipulation that stops me from getting another shot…”

“How is that fair? How is that right?”

“It isn’t”

“See, I carried this company on my back and I defended it against Mac and his cronies yet Mark and Christian seem to be blowing Mac Bane. Wolfslair has been successful as a unit but we have never EVER talking about SCW like it has needed saving. So, I’m locked out. Truth is, that little stipulation would have been fine if it was just on Mac, since he had opportunity after opportunity but in the end it screwed ME over. It made ME get shoved down to the bottom of the ladder. And I have never left the company or taken a break after losing a title.,..I have never walked off like a child…”

He smirks and sneers shaking his head.

”Which brings me to Jack Washington. I have so much history with Jack, I have seen his face across the ring from me just as much as I have Mac. See, I beat Griffin Hawkins for that title, I faced Jack and he was able to beat me. I didn’t take the rematch against Jack for a few reasons. One was that I didn’t believe I deserved it. I held the title for two weeks, The other was, at the time I wanted to see sopme new blood as a world champion, that was you Jackie boy. You deserved that time in the sun and I sat back and watched, I went back to the bottom of the ladder and prepared to work my way up expecting you to be there when I worked and earned my way back to you…”

“Unfortunately it didn;’t work out that way. You traded that title back and forth between yourself and Kris Ryans before losing it to Mark Cross. You and I never got to face each other while you were the champion. However, we did face while I was the champion. You got your shot against me, you got a chance to prove the first time wasn’t a fluke and we went at it and as expected you were a goddamn challenge Jack, I will never sit here and say you weren’t a challenge or you’re not a threat Cause I know damn well you are. But while I have always acknowledged you as part of the main event scene of SCW you have never afforded me the respect I deserve.”

“That’s why you’ll never reach my heights Jack.”

“That’s why you will never be a respected part of the company. You make excuses, you make childish comments that make zero sense. Shit, I watched and listened to you against Supreme Machine. You sat there and rattled on about the guys name. His name Jack. The guy could have been named “Fluffy McNuggets” and it wouldn’t have mattered. What mattered was that you were teamed with Krystal Wolfe who has been one of the most dominant bombshells over the last few months and you weren’t able to get the job done. You had a shot to go through and win the blast from the past, to get a match against Mac Bane and end his reign of terror. Something I can’t do..something I’m not allowed to do…”

“But, you failed, you failed and now for some reason, my first match  back, from time off that I never asked for….is against you…”

“And I have a need to prove myself again Jack, a need to get in the ring and get back on that horse. And the only way I can make sure Christian and Mark wake up and see what they’re doing and where they went wrong is to make sure they know I am un-fucking-deniable. So get in the ring with me Jack, get in the ring and lets burn the goddamn house down again, and lets show Mac and his cronies that SCW doesn’t need saving…”

Kin…

I always felt like an orphan.

Abandoned by everyone I let close. My father, as much as I hated him for being a weak, pathetic, alcoholic mess, was still my father. He was meant to guide me, to take me by the hand and lead me into becoming a man. To show me the way. To show me what it meant to be a better brother, son, husband and someday a father to my own children. That’s what a father does. And in failing that, you always have your mother.

After all, mother is the name for god in the lips and hearts of little children.

William Thackary said that. Profound in a way but also wildly depressing and obvious. When you’re a child you are gullible, naive. You don’t know any better. So the person who gives you life, who then keeps you alive. To you they are god. Before you even know what the word is. And then you depend on them, for everything. To teach, to care, to love. But what happens when they leave before you’re ready?

Many would argue that you are never “ready” to lose a parent.

But I walked away, I didn’t see my father waste away, and when I came back I had that sense of family, that feeling of purpose. I tried to step into his shoes thinking it would be easy. Thinking I could guide the family. Help my sister, my brother and my mother. But instead, our mother walked out. Free from the tyranny of her late husband she now wanted to be free of the responsibilities and prison of being a mother. And as the oldest I clearly had to take the lead.

And I fucking failed miserably. I couldn’t save my brother. I couldn’t stop him from the self destructive past he chose. I couldn’t stop my sister from leaving. I can’t stop anyone from leaving.

And that….that’s why I feel like an orphan…

”Weird isn’t it?”

The voice of Austin James Mercer breaks his thoughts. The inner monologue fades away and Alex can feel everything. The heat from the vents above keeping the New York Winter at bay, the steel rail pushing against his forearms as he leans across it surveying the gym. He gives Austin the smallest of verbal grunts and a raised eyebrow.

”Thinking how far we’ve come, from where Wolfslair started.” Alex just offered a small smile, his hands clasped together with his right foot up on the lower rail. Austin folded his arms over his chest, the two of them were far enough away from everyone else that he knew they wouldn’t be disturbed or heard. ”Amazing that we’ve been able to build this, Sonya did a great job, but she had to deal with Alicia, who isn’t a people person, me, a guy with family issues…and you….someone who doesn’t trust anyone….a guy who even now after all we have been through isn’t as open as he should be.” Alex swallowed and looked down.

He took a sharp breath in before shaking his head. ”Aus…don’t”

Things went silent. Austin placed his hands on the railing overlooking the gym from the stairwell leading to the roof, Austin knew Alex was here, it’s where Alex always went when he wanted to think, be alone. The office was always crowded, even if it was just Alex and his wife. ”You have done so much for so many people. Always been there for them, helped mold some of the best champions this company has ever seen, you’ve gone above and beyond for some of these kids and when my family fell apart you were there, when I went off the rails you never gave up on me…but you won’t let us get close…”

Alex shook his head and tried with everything he had to stay silent. He didn’t want to open this door. ”I always have trouble letting people in, don’t dwell on it…I’ve just been burned man..guys in my past like Spike, guys I thought I could trust who stabbed me in the back…I just-”

”Bullshit….total bullshit. You are not keeping everyone at arms length in your personal life because a guy you thought was your friend screwed you over in the wrestling business…for fucks sake if that was the case not one person in this gym would trust anyone…” He was right of course, and that infuriated and impressed Alex in equal measure.

He took a moment, staring ahead as Austin pushed off the rail shaking his head, turning away from Alex to give up for the day. [color-red]”Everyone leaves Aus…” He stopped in his tracks, Alex ground his teeth together and let out a louder sigh. Pushing his breath out and running his hands through his hair. ”My dad, my mom, my younger brother, even my sister for a time. They all left. And it’s just continued on….I love my wife, I do…and I don’t think she’ll go anywhere but there’s always that fear…”

He paused, Austin didn’t say a word, instead he moved closer and just prepared to listen. Alex swallowed hard and looked up, away from everyone training and to the roof, the rafters. The steel beams. He needed something else to focus on, something non organic, something not human. ”Elena she…” He stopped realising he was saying to much, not only was this something he never talked about with anyone out loud, this was also Austins former stepmother. The woman that his deceased father loved with all his heart. Austin tilted his head and shook his head.

”What does Elena have to do to with this?”

”We didn’t mean for it to happen Aus. When we were kids life was simple. I’d left home, I…I ran away from my dad, my responsibilities. I just wanted to do this, be a wrestler…” He trailed off before pushing off the rail and turning to Austin, unsure of if he wanted to hear this, but the look in Austins eyes, he needed to know. ”I met Elena when we were both teenagers. I was 19, she was 18. We connected and I was going to stay in the UK with her but….I found out my dad died…I had to go home..” His heart was heavy, filled with regret and it hurt. Anytime Alex thought about that time it was a double edged sword, a smile on his faced remembering the innocence he had, the woman who was his first real love, but then the pain of it all.

”This I know Alex…you two had a fling when you were younger…” Austin knew there was something else, his voice inflection changing through the sentence as if he was asking a question without framing it as one.

Alex nodded slowly and laughed to himself. He needed to tell him. ”I loved her. Really loved her. And when I had to stay home for my brother and she, she ignored my calls, my letters, everything It broke me. Thats why when we both ended up in Honor years later…I took it as a sign, I don’t know why” He felt like an idiot now, believing it and going through with it. ”Ana and I were having a hard time, we broke up, she right away wanted a divorce, something else I took as a sign, a great big neon one that read “now’s your chance”. It was stupid. But I loved her….”

There was more silence, Austin staring ahead before nodding and saying the words. Ones that he didn’t want to, but had to. ”You..slept with her…” Silence again, Austin was working it out, remembering the time and where they all were in their lives. ”She was with my dad….she cheated on him?..” He turned and pushed out a breath, he looked confused and had no idea what else to say.

Alex shook his head and laughed under his breath. ”I don’t know why we did it, but for a few months we were together. I think your dad and her were having problems. But for a while it was everything we wanted it to be, it was like we rediscovered each other…” He smiled and shook his head again. ”But it was a lie, in the end she chose him, she walked away from me. No matter what she felt for me she couldn’t leave him. She left…just like everyone else…”

”Thats why you hold back? That’s why you don’t trust people?”

Alex couldn’t hold back anymore, his hands wrapped around the steel rail and his muscles tensed as his head snapped sideways. ”You think I don’t trust you or others? You honestly think that? Aus this ain’t about me trusting you, or Ali or Johanna, or anyone else down there or in my life. This is about me…not trusting myself…” He paused and swallowed hard trying to choose his words carefully. ”People walk away because of me. I don’t blame them. My dad died from his own disease run by his demons, my mother needed to be away from us, I failed to save Dylan, I failed to be there for Charlie, I wasn’t good enough to stand with Spike or MGK or any of the other friends I’ve had in the wrestling business and I wasn’t good enough for Elena….I don’t trust myself to be who you all need me to be…”

Austin didn’t know what to say, that was evident. Alex just shook his head and turned looking down at the member of the gym before nodding slowly and moving passed Austin giving his friend a tap on the shoulder.

”I’ve accepted that Aus…”

Third times a charm?

”Been an interesting year for me hasn’t it?”

Alexs’ voice rings out as he comes into view. His hair back and away from his face as his lips curve into an all knowing arrogant smile. Obviously much happier in his professional life than he has ever been, despite the hurdles and issues.

”This time last year I was in a hole. Professionally it wasn’t good for me. I was questioning who I was and if I had a place in this business anymore. Not just this company the industry as a whole. Who was Alex Jones in 2020 and who would he be in 2021? That was the question that was laid out in front of me. I had run a former world champion out of the company by berating him, I won the SCW world title and as I stood on top of the world, a younger stronger challenger knocked my ass off the mountain and watched me tumble down. It’s the same as out in the animal kingdom. The alpha lion being replaced by his younger counterpart to lead the pride.”

“That’s what it felt like in all honesty. It felt like I was being replaced, that I was a stop gap solution for the company to go from point A to point B and I was just an afterthought. Alex Jones, the Black dragoin, leader of wolfslair was no longer relevant.”

“My entire being was tied up in what I could and couldn’t do. And as I got older that seemed like it was less and less, dwindling day by day. But with loss came perspective, with perspective came purpose and with purpose came motivation.”

“So, I doid what any weathered champion would do…”

“I picked myself up, I dusted myself off and I told you all I wasn’t done. And I get it, I sound like a broken record sometimes but it bears repeating just how crazy it was. From losing the world title, to regaining it in the weirdest of ways to beating the kid who took it from me a year later and being able to loof forward instead of backward. See that’s what I thought the win over Jack would be. That's what I thought I was going to be able to do.”

He paused and laughed to himself throwing his hands in the air before reaching down and picking up the Sin City Wrestling title putting it over his shoulder. The beautiful championship shining under the light above.

”After the title defences I had, after winning the damn thing I took time to settle a personal score. That’s what the match with Levi was, personal. He slandered my gym and my integrity so he had to pay. And when the dust settled he tucked tail and backed off. I forced Levi Russow to show humility and respect. And it speaks volumes that I beat that man once and he bent the knee, when Mac Bane has fallen to me twice and can’t even show me the most minimal respect that I am owed or deserved.”

“And I have done it for him, even in victory I looked at Mac and I told the world how amazing he was. A bull of a man, ready to knock down walls and cave in peoples skulls, a guiy who was dominant and is one of the toughest challengers I have had. I even went as far as saying I didn’t so much BEAT Mac Bane as I escaped him. I showed him the utmost respect because I didn’t want people like Jack Washington and Mark Cross being able to say that Mac was anything less than a fucking worthy world champion.”

“But that seems to have been a mistake on my part. Because here I am trying to look forward and instead I’m being forced to look back.”

“I beat this man twice, I beat him once to win the title and then again in an immediate rematch. Both times they were his decision and his choice. He chose to defend the title against me in what many sid would be an “easy ride” he chose to call for an immediate rematch instead of waiting because his bruised ego wouldn’t allow him to see that I was simply better. And it’s no shame really. Sometimes there are people in this business who simply have your number. For Alicia that seems to be Keira Fisher Johnson, for Austin that seems to be Senor Vinnie and for you Mac Bane, it;’s me”

“But third time’s the charm eh?”

Alex scoffs, he shakes his head again and adjusts the title, anger boiling up from his stomach to his heart as it pushes the blood through his body, it feels like lava running through his veins and his eyes burn.

”You earned this opportunity though Mac, I’ll give you that but the problem is that you were always going to. You were always going to step up and have a title shot cause you take opportunities with both hands. You proved that time and time again. Mac Bane is a beast, Mac Bane is one of the best. I get it. We all do. But the fact remains I beat you twice and that has you shook. As the kids say. It has you soo shaken up that you have turned tail on the very company itself thinking that it will somehow give you the strength to take back this title. This company that has given you so much.”

“Before you came here you were known Mac, you were. Alot of p[eople had heard of the veteran known as Mac Bane but SCW has given you opportunities to call yourself the best in the world. And the way you repay the company and the way you repay Mark Ward and Christian Underwood is to run the company and it;s employees down and essentially piss in the mouths of those who made you.”
Alex starts a slow golf clap, highly condescending ”Bravo….BRA-FUCKING-VO. Brilliant move Mac. Cause now, not only do you have me wanting to beat you to keep this title after everything you’ve said about me…you’re forcing me to do it for the pride of Sin City Wrestling…”

He throws his hands in the air again, his lips twisting into another arrogant smirk.

”You ran down me, the company and who has been at the top. You have said SCW needs “saving” saving from, what exactly Mac? Saving from competition? Saving from sold out arenas and tours? Saving from high viewership numbers and key demo wins and sponsorship deals with fucking mega companies and all the other stuff that SCW has had going for it? Saving from never having a show that is preempted or fucked with? Saving from what exactly Mac? I never thought it possible but the Cowboy bad ass has gotten himself so shaken up and in his feels that he has resorted to cheap tactics on twitter like agreeing and siding with Mark Cross…”

“Are you kidding?”

“And the funniest part is you think that will work in your favor and you think somehow you’re under my skin…”

“Mac, you are so worried about not being able to regain this title and you are so shaken up and insecure that you brought in a goddamn army and all your buddies. You thought you reattled me and have my number when you have formed this group and are trying to take out any threats to you. And I get it, you probably think you can make comparisons to myself, Austin and the rest of Wolfslair but we don’t run that way. We are a group, a dominant one. Two mixed tag team titles, an internet title, four roulette titles and six….FUCKING SIX world title reigns between us. And maybe a seventh with Johanna taking on your wife if she gets passed Bella.”

“That is what we bring to the table Mac and we didn’t have to group attack people to do it…”

“When the going gets tough the tough turn into insecure bitches who need back up…”

“I don’t need Austin to be out there with me, I don’t need to corner you and kick the shit out of you with him. I don’t need to claim I’m “saving” SCW. But, I will say I have brought some stability to a championship that started to bounce around a little too much for my liking. Since September 12th this title has been around my waist or on my shoulder and I have represented this company proudly. Over three months, at the time of recording I’m at 96 days as world champion, fun fact Mac, that’s longer than your World, Roulette and Internet title reigns combined…”

“And that’s with me being generous and giving you seven days as roulette champion after you bounced from the company…”

He scoffs and shakes his head getting even angrier now.

”The fact is Mac I have given you too much credit and respect for too long. I know how good you are, how dangerous you are and how dominant you can be. But the way I see it is I’m doing you a favor. You work best when you’re chasing a championship. When you’re a dog chasing a car you are determined and dominant and someone who can be looked at and respected and appreciated but much like a dog with a car, when you actually catch it you have no idea what to do with it. When you get a championship you freeze. The roulette title…you bounces, dropping it and leaving the company in a shit position…”

“The internet title, Myra and Amber were having a match after Myra had been dominant and was essentially cashing in that title to get a shot at Amber, so you ended up getting the same opportunity for some dumbass reason, losing the internet title and putting the company in a shitty position. Then, well, then you chose to defend the world title against the Roulette champion…that would be me…forcing me to have to vacate the roulette title…putting the company in a shit position..,again…”

“It seems to me Mac, that I was wrong and that SCW might need saving….from you…and your selfish shitty decisions and actions. So, final Climax control of the year, Climax Control 320…that’s what I’m going to fucking do”

Conflict of interest

He was hiding.

Not intentionally. It was a subliminal. Since the match was announced he had trained in secret, not taking his time out on the main floor with the others, waiting instead till the end of the day before locking up, or getting there early. It was a hard thing. Being a leader. And, for better or worse, that’s what Alex was. A leader. Not just because he was now the reigning, defending word champion of sin city wrestling, but also the founder and lead trainer of wolfslair. The new York gym, but also Orlando, his sister still holding a higher position but scaling back her duties as she became General Manager of up and coming company Pro Wrestling Excellence.

So it all fell on Alex. It was on him to make sure both gyms ran smoothly, to help push the members to reach their goals as well as his own. It was alot of pressure, and it was pressure that Alex thrived in.

However, there wa sa nagging thought in the back of his head, how long was this going to last? The success, the growth. It was different and new. All the members in their own way were improving, becoming what they were supposed to. It filled him with pride and happiness. But there was the problem. He didn’t feel like he should. These were adults. Grown human beings capable of their own careers and destiny.

So, after his victory, his redemption and his defence, a match was announced that shook who he was to the core. But, Alex would never admit it.

He watched them, they finished their training for the day, the entire gym. The New York contingent, the Orlando group, all under one roof for the first time in what felt like years. In reality it had only been a few months. But, Alex still watched them, all of them. Sierra, Lachlan, Miles, Johanna, Alicia, Dickie, Aiden. The rest of them all laughing and moving around the gym and out the door. Alex smiled, knowing how far they had all come since coming to Wolfslair, and there it was again. The feeling of pride.

They say Pride comes before the fall. And maybe that was his curse. Pride. For years Alex had felt it, pride in his accomplishments, from title wins to names he had collected. Touting them in promo after promo and interview after interview. At nauseum in some points. It made people angry, jealous and in some cases sick. But therein lied the beauty of what Alex was capable of. Using it all to make those around him feel insecure. But this was different.

”Not going to say goodbye?” Austins voice boomed through the small office area. The doors were shut, the windows too, just the blinds pulled open so Alex could see out onto the floor. His wife Sonya gave his sister Charlie a hug, Alex just slowly shook his head, he looked back down at his paperwork, shuffling them before signing the bottom of one of the contracts with a grunt. Austin rolled his eyes, moving his hands to Alex and pushing the papers down onto the desk and away from Alex. ”Not even to your sister huh?....come on..” Alexs’ nostrils flared. He knew Austin was right.

He was trying to put him in a better mindset, it was what Austin always tried to do. Maybe he was the real leader. ”You’re acting like I’ll never see them all again Aus..”

Alex chuckled, Austin didn’t. It was almost like he knew what was on Alexs’ mind before Alex did. The last few months had been hard, Alex questioned everything about himself, why he was getting opportunities, if he could take advantage of them and of course, was he the same competitor he always was? But this was different. Some of the members of wolfslair had come from somewhere else, trained somewhere else. And maybe, just maybe they didn’t quite trust him, maybe they were there for other reasons.

”Besides, I have bigger things to worry about.” He heard Austin scoff, he could feel the attitude change and Austin moved towards the door opening it before leaning against the wall folding his arms. Austin didn’t have to say anything, he never had to say anything. He looked out towards the group, all of them still laughing and smiling He looked back at Alex, nodding in their direction. He sighed moving up to Austin with a shake of his head ”You’re persistent you know that?” He just smiled, Alex sighed and walked through the door.

The mats beneath his feet squeaked as he kept moving toward the group. There was high fives, laughter, quick hugs and like that it was done. The Orlando crew left, there was sadness and the sound faded and disappeared. Alex moved back into the gym as the others left, his hands felt heavy, they weighed down his shoulders. There was work to do, he knew it, they knew it and now Alex had to start it.

Choices

”Did you all believe that this was going to be the end of me?”

Alex sat on the end of an old wooden chair, his head hanging down with his hair flowing. He stared at the ground, he should be happy, celebrating. But for whatever reason, he wasn’t.

”So many thought Jack Washington was going to beat me, take the Sin City Wrestling world title from me and send me back down to the Internet or Roulette divisions or maybe, just maybe kick my ass out of this company and get rid of me for good. Truth be told. He was close. Closer than most. See, Jack is what you would call a prodigious talent. He doesn’t have to work as hard as some because everything comes natural. And kickin my ass came very very natural. But even after he did that, even after he came into the biggest match of the year at the biggest even of the year he still couldn’t stop my redemption. He was it, the final piece of the puzzle, the final little missing passage in that chapter.”

“But now, that piece is in place and that chapter is finished and you’d think I’d be happy. Right?. That I can leave the past behind me now and look toward the future. But what is that future? Where do I go from here? I mean, the number one contender has been decided. And it’s Mac Bane, the former champion, the goddamn bulldozer who I escaped twice now. And I suppose that is something to look forward to.”

“But, I can’t just focus on that.”

“See, being a champion, the champion, means that everyone is gunning for you. Everyone. Not just the number one contender. But everyone else who thinks they’re owed a title shot or they have somehow earned one by simply existing. I have a target on my back and everyone has a goddamn gun. And the sad part about all this is before the match with Jck, my biggest fear was losing to him again, but before that it was getting beaten without successfully defending this….”

Alex pulls the SCW title up, looking at it before lowering it back down and holding it between his knees.

”But now, I don’t know what to be afraid of, I don’t know what I should be desperate to protect or fight for. See, a year ago when I did lose this title, the fight was obvious, the need was obvious. I needed to start from the bottom and fight my way back to the top. I did it by facing the best like Fenris, Ben Jordan and Vinnie, and sometimes I stumbled, I failed and other times I succeeded. It took me to the roulette title and then when I had to put that on the line to face Mac, the fear was failing again, after I won the fear was losing it right away and then the final hurdle was Jack and now I have no idea what I should fight for.”

“Do I fight to simply keep the title? To prove I’m the best? Nah, that time has come and gone. Now the best thing I can think of is to fight for those around me. To give my friends and family a sense of pride.”

“And that is where Levi Russow comes in.”

“Levi fucking Russow. As far as the pecking order in ACW goes, it’s not like I could find someone lower right now could I? Now, for the uninitiated, or for the people who don’t care, Levi is a star in other promotions, a man who for years considered himself to be a veteran wrestling god among men. A guy who in the places where he worked and stayed was indeed important. But when he spreads his wings and tries to fly often comes crashing down to earth in a realisation that he really isn’t as good as he believes. Are you Levi?”

He can’t help but smile and shake his head before standing up, pushing to his feet and stepping forward.

”And you desperately want to recapture that feeling, that feeling of being important. And I get it, I understand it better than most. You watched people you trained with, people you knew surpass you, you watched your own son surpass you. And now here you are, in your early forties and instead of being a beacon for the younger generation or people who you’ve worked with you are nothing but a whiney self absorbed child with dreams of recapturing the self importance you had. And that’s what all this is about isn’t it? This isn’t about you hating me for any substantial reason, this isn’t about you thinking you can slingshot your way up the ladder to face me for the title. No Levi, this is about one thing and one thing alone…”

“Your ego.”

“It’s currently bruised and broken. It’s been destroyed all because people you trusted, people you trained with and helped train decided to walk away from you and train with me. And the sad part, the ultimate tragedy of all of this, your hate, your anger, your ego, it’s all misplaced. It shouldn’t be aimed at me, it shouldn’t be aimed at Lachlan or Miles. It should be aimed at yourself. This has never been about me taking credit for their success or saying I trained them. This whole thing, Wolfslair is a brotherhood.”

“Steel sharpens steel.”

“Yes Lachlan and Miles have become even better athletes and wrestlers working at Wolfslair Orlando and Wolfslair New York, this is true, it’s a fact, a matter of fucking record. But what you are too stubborn to see is that I have numerous times stated how I have improved with them. Seeing their youthful exuberance, seeing how they think of new ways to move and think. Miles and Lachlan have helped me become a world champion again as much as Austin, Alicia, Johanna, my sister and every other member of Wolfslair...this Sin City Wrestling world heavyweight title is not MY championship…”

“It’s OUR championship.”

Alex growls and sneers, his eyes flash and for a moment the respectful leader, the gym head and world champion disappears and instead we see the arrogant one, the guy who did everything he could to become a champion, no matter the cost.

”For months Levi you have thrown cheap shots anyway you can, without ever actually addressing me, running your mouth behind your phone. And myself along with Finn, Charlie and other head trainers ignored it. We went about our business and trained, we became stronger. All the while you threw petty barbs at us, and why? Because people who you considered to be your friends decided to train somewhere else? Or was it because you weren’t invited to be a part of it? Because I didn’t come to your son and ask Jack if he wanted to be a part of it?”

“Or, is it because I didn’t ask the mighty Levi Russow to become a trainer? To help the next generation prepare and become better wrestlers? Is that it Levi? Is it less about Miles and Lachlans decisions and more about mine? And your exclusion? Is that what bruised your ego so easily? Oh Levi, the reason why I didn’t ask Jack to come to Wolfslair is because that would have been disrespect to you. A kick right in the nuts. But, as far as you? The reason why I didn’t ask the great Levi Russow to train others?”

“It’s because you’re not good enough…”

He pauses again, thinking about it for a moment before placing the SCW world title down and folding his arms over his chest, the corner of his mouth twisting up in a small smirk.

”And it’s not because of any lack of skill or foresight when it comes to the ring or the art of professional wrestling, I’m not going to be a stone faced liar here and say you’re not a fucking great wrestler Levi, because you are, your whole family is and Jack could be a legend someday, but you? You are the fuck up that we have all seen. You’re the cautionary tale that we tell the kids to make sure they stay on the straight and narrow. You are the dictionary fucking definition of wasted talent, potential and being your own worst enemy and not being able to get out of your own way.”

“And you want to train with impressionable youth and try and guide them? Mother fucker you couldn’t guide your way out of a walmart with a store map, GPS and a twenty year employee helping you…”

“And instead of improving yourself and being the wise veteran worthy of respect that you see yourself as you’d rather come at me. Attack me, talk shit about me and jump the line for a match with me when, truth be told, in SCW you haven’t earned shit. You faced Alex Rush, good for you, you had a chance to prove your worth against Ken Davidson and instead you shit the bed, went on a tired old rant about it, never taking responsibilities for your failures, and now here you are. After lucking your way into a match, a match that I am sure you thought I would either ignore or simply back out of. Due to some vain belief I’m intimidated by you in some way shape or form.”

“I’m the fucking world champion Levi…”

“I walked through hell twice with Mac Bane.”

“I faced my fears and earned my redemption. What the hell could you possibly do to me that is worse than what I have already been through? So at Climax control, take your veiled threats, bruised ego, childish subtweets and cheap shots, roll them up into a tiny, neat little ball...and shove em right up your Russow…”

Thriller at Wolfslair

It’s close to midnight, and something evil is lurking in the dark. Not really, in fact, it’s not midnight. Or is it? Alex Jones felt something was wrong. It wasn’t a regular day or regular night. Alex couldn’t even remember how we got to the gym, he didn’t remember waking up, he didn’t remember seeing his wife or his children. All he could remember as he strained and struggled in his own mind was waking up sitting at his desk in the office of the gym.

He had got to his feet and moved out onto the main floor. No one was there, the gym was completely empty, silent, abandoned. Things were put back in all of the correct places and the gym was clean, it was as if it was early in the morning before the gym was ready to open. It looked dark outside, he turned to look at one of the clocks yet for some reason he couldn’t read it.

The numbers were jumbled, Alex shook his head and growled under his breath ”Someone is playing a rib on me.” he moved from the main room back into the office, looking above the door at the clock that is normally there. The same thing, the clock was jumbled. Alex threw his hands in the air, he was frustrated and angry. They were really pulling out all the stops here for this rib. He pulled out his phone looking down at it it was turned off, that was strange, his phone was never off. He tried to switch it on but there was nothing.

Was his phone dead? How long has he been asleep? Why had he been asleep? Nothing seems to make sense, nothing seemed right. He took a deep breath trying to clear his mind. A thunder strike startled him. Alex jumping a little while he was in the office. He looked around mainly to make sure no one was around to see him jump. He sighed and grabbed his car keys, he was going to go home. He moved from the office, moving around the flat floor.

BANG

He spun around, the sound echoing through the gym. Then, there was silence. An uncomfortable silence. One that would send a chill up your spine. All he could hear was his own breathing, his own heartbeat. His own footsteps.

”Alex!” He turned, Johanna Krieger ran towards him, looking from side to side, Alex exhaled, happy to see a friendly face. Or as friendly as she could be. She stopped in front of him, out of breath. ”Where is everybody?”

”I don’t know” Alex answer bluntly, it was the truth he had no idea where anyone was., He didn’t know what the time was, he didn’t know what had happened before. Jo swallowed hard, looking confused herself. ”What is the last thing you remember?”

She bit her bottom lip and gave a small shrug of her shoulders. ”I woke up in the weight room…I must have fallen asleep in the bench.” it was a very matter of fact answer. But Alice could tell that it was weighing heavily on her mind. She would never fall asleep or white bench, just like Alex would never fall asleep at his desk. ”The clock…it was strange, jumbled up….like that one.” they both turned as she pointed up at the large clock on the wall. The first one that Alex looked at.

”Alright. We need to get out of here…” he motioned her towards the door. Both of them moving with haste, he reached out grabbing the handle and pushing forward, the door was locked. Alex growled in frustration pulling his keys from his pocket looking frantically for the door key. He shook his head and looked at Jo. ”Its not here.” they looked at each other, turning back at the office Alex took a step before hearing a groaning sound coming from the rolled-up mats in the corner.

”The fuck is that?” There was a second groan, followed by a thunder crash. The two made their way over towards the sound. Alex moving around in front of Jo. Move he wasn’t sure he needed to make, after all she was more than capable of handling herself. They moved around to where the rolled-up mats laid against the floor, Alex took a step against the closest one peering over before a figure stood straight up, causing Alex to jump back as Jo let out a small squeal.

”Nice to see you too”

”Alicia? Thank fuck.” Alicia Lukas, still in her workout gear stood up behind the rolled up mats, her hair a mess as she stretched and looked around the gym. He’s in confusion over her eyes.

She stepped over the top of them moving towards Alex and Johanna. ”What the hell happened? Did I f-“

Fall ”asleep?” they both answered at the same time. Alicia just gave a slow not as Alex looked at them both, he folded his arms over his chest raising his left hand up to his chin, grabbing it between his thumb and forefinger. ”Same thing happened to us. I woke up in my office, Jo woke up in the weight room.”

”And we don’t remember anything.” Jo interjected, not so much sounding frustrated as angry this time.

Alicia just shook her head raising her hand up to her hair running her hands through it and tying it back. She looked up at the wall confused tilting her head. ”Whats with the clock?” Alex shook his head and gave a shrug. ”This, this doesn’t make any sense? How could we all have fallen asleep here and not only not realised it but...not remember how?” It was strange. It was unsettling. All three of them felt it as there was another thundering crash. Alex looked towards the door then back at Joe and Alicia.

”Ok, we need to find the key to the door, or find the padlock key for the roller door, I don’t have either on my keys..” They moved towards the door, Alex reached out, but that door too was now locked. Alex pushed it hard, turning the knob as it refused to move. ”I didn’t….I didn’t lock this.” Jo and Alicia looked at each other. Alex looked through his keys for the office one, again it was missing. ”No...wait...I saw this on here, what the fuck is going on?”

Alicia screamed. Alex spun around, Jo stepped back. In front of them were all the other members of Wolfslair, but, there was something wrong with them. They all had pale skin, sunken eyes, matted hair. Aiden Reynolds, Millie Reynolds, Dickie Watson, Finn Whelan, Miles Kasey, Lachlan Kane, Sonja Jones, Charlie Jones, Sierra Williams, Kallie Reznik and at the front was Austin James Mercer. They shuffled towards the three. Jo shook her head, Alex swallowed hard. ”What’s wrong with them?...Alex?”

”I don’t know….AUSTIN...AUSTIN WHAT THE HELL?” The pack continued to move toward them, surrounding them. They got close as the three remaining members backed up against the office wall. Then suddenly. The pack stopped. The thunder crashed, a wolf howled. And the unmistakable bass lines of Michael Jacksons Thriller hit. Austin stood at the front, flanked by all the other members of Wolfslair. They started to dance back and forth. Alex blinked a few times when suddenly.

BEEP BEEP BEEP

An alarm? Alexs’ eyes opened, the sun hit him as it had just started to rise, shooting in through the far window. ”....I really need to lay off the shellfish…..”

A lengendary team up

”well, that sucked. I’m not going to sit here and lie about this. Mac Bane beat the shit out of me. Twice.”

Alex felt his arms over his chest, wearing a black shirt supporting the M7 logo from mass affect. Torn black jeans and black converse. His hair down as he shakes his head and gives a wry smile to the camera

”I said it before. And I will say it again, I didn’t so much Pete Mac as I survived him. He and I went to war and I was able to come out the winner, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have permanent scars after that. In the end I am still the same city wrestling world champion. And both times people wrote me off, both times they just thought Mac was going to steamroll over me. They thought I was going to be a victim in his long running championship aspirations in our first match, and in our second, The rematch, everyone believed that the championship was going to be handed right back to him and my second run with this title was going to end just as fast as the first did.”

“I proved them all wrong.”

“But, how long can I do that? How long can I move past every single expectation and barricade that they put in front of me. Every single roadblock and every single person in this business that believes I cannot keep this title? The thing is, now I am scheduled to defend this championship at the biggest show of the year against the guy who ended my first run. The redemption story never changes does it? However before that we have ourselves a fun little tag match.”

Alex chuckles to himself and shakes his head.

”Champions versus challengers. With the other challlenger for the bombshells title as the special guest referee. The truth is I couldn’t ask for a better Tag Team partner. Amber Ryan has been the most dominating woman in that division since she stepped foot in this company. And I say that full well with Alicia Lukas in my gym and group. But Amber has gone about destroying everyone that she’s been in the ring with. She even beat Alicia. She beat Alicia one-on-one in a title match which is very hard to do.”

“However, this does come with a small problem. You say Amber Ryan also happens to be the significant other of the man that I took the world championship from. And even though I know Amber is a professional and she, like Me hates losing I also can’t discount emotion. I know that Amber loves Mac, I know that they really wanted to keep going with this narrative of the golden couple. One of them dominating the bombshells division and the other one dominating the men’s division. It’s what they wanted, it’s what they needed, and I get it I really do.”

“Wolfslair once held The bombshells and world championships at the same time. Domination in a relationship or a team feels good.”

“I stopped that. I just hope that Amber realises it was just a business. And I also hope she realises that in this match her half will be taking care of and my half will be taken care of. I will do everything that I can do in this ring to make sure that we win as a team. Just like I know she well. And I will enjoy watching her go one on one with crystal before having to face her and Roxi..”

He smiles warmly and gives a small nod.

”Now, It’s no secret that Crystal and I know each other quite well. I’ve known her for over 10 years. She and I are friends. I spent time with her outside the ring I know her family, that’s just how it is. But as her friend I also know her fault and one of the fault is her arrogance. Crystal believe she is one of the best in the world and while she does have a great record she also has a failure is that bring her down to a level that I don’t believe she ever truly excepted. As good as Crystal is a lot of her wins have been due to pure luck and happenstance.”

“ and right now Crystal you have to realise that you are getting in that bring with someone who can destroy you. Amber Ryan is better than you, that’s just facts that isn’t me trying to be horrible that isn’t me trying to be a horrible human being that’s me being your friend and telling you the truth. Sometimes people just don’t do that and they save people‘s feelings. But it’s okay Crystal because I know you will still put 100% into this match. Just like your partner will.”

Alex bolts his arms back over his chest game with a small shake his head and a laugh under his breath.

”Jack. Congratulations on becoming the number one contender. Congratulations on stepping your ticket and getting ready to go to high-stakes to face me one on one for the championship. Again. I’m looking forward to this match Jack, I really am looking forward to it. Before we get there we have to go through this tag match. We have to get in the ring and feel each other out. We get to have a preview. We both have good partners, we both have a lot of expectation on our shoulders and we both have an idea of redemption.”

“Redemption.”

“You and I have done this dance before. But the last time I didn’t fully appreciate the talent you had. All the drive. All the intelligence. That was my biggest mistake with you. See anyone can look at you and see that you work hard, you keep yourself in great shape you’re clearly dedicated to this. I get it. But I underestimated what was between your ears. You got into my head, you pissed me off, you took me off my game, and you beat me. You beat me that’s it no excuses you were better than me.”

“But, before high stakes, we get this. Champions versus challengers. I’m looking forward to it Jackie.

Changes.

He knew something was wrong. Austin had been incredibly angry for months. Stomping around the gym, throwing things when he thought no one was looking. Things that would normally wash down his back like they were nothing becoming huge arguments and things that would set him off. Different members of the gym would go out of their way to avoid him, acting like they were walking on eggshells around the former world champion. It broke Alex’s heart. Seeing someone who he had cared for like an older brother spiraling down into a dark hole. There was definitely something wrong in Austin‘s personal life, Alex just didn’t know what it was and he didn’t know how to get there. Whenever Alex would try and talk to him Austin would change the subject, he would make everything about work, everything about the gym or the company.

It was maddening, Austin and Alex had started off as two people who didn’t know each other, all Alex knew about Austin was that he hated Austin‘s father. A dark history between the two men, involving a woman of course. But as time went on not only did Alex start to become kinder to Austin, his family, and the past, but Alex also made sure that Austin would be successful, he started to care about him.

He started looking at Austin like a younger brother. Someone who he could be there for not only in a business sense but also in a personal one. They got to know each other’s wives, Austin got to know Alex‘s children, had Alex was there when Austin's first and second children were born. Alex was there when Austin‘s sister came back into his life when Austin found out that he was an uncle when Austin became a world champion. Alex was there every single time, every step of the way, he had Austins back, and now? Now as Austin seemed so down, depressed, and troubled by everything in his life all Alex wanted to do was be there for his friend. To be a brother. Family.

Today was going to be different.

The second that Alex walked into the gym he could feel something was wrong. Everyone else was over one side, using the exercise equipment or the grappling mats. Nobody was in either of the practice rooms towards the far end of the gym. Nobody except for Austin. He stood in the larger of the two rings, his arms leaning on the top rope to either side of him as his back state against the turnbuckle. His eyes trained directly ahead, across the ring to the opposite corner. There was something different about him, a certain ora of anger that seemed to burn and radiate like heat off of his body.

Alex growled under his breath moving towards the ring past everyone else, they all stopped to watch him approach Austin. They tried to act like they were going to go about their business, grappling on the mat and lifting weights but all the while turning their heads and watching the leader of the gym approach his first in command.

Alex jumped up onto the apron, he leaned over the top rope with his hands clasped together. “Hey, got a minute?” Nothing. Not even an acknowledgment of his presence or existence. Austin just stayed staring forward, no emotion on his face but his body language showing what we all knew. He was fuming. Alex sighed heavily and stepped into the ring. “Aus? Gotta talk man.” This time Alex got a reaction. Austin’s had moved up until the side looking at his longtime friend and mentor. A simple shake of his head as he pushed off the ropes standing straight up.

“Sorry Alex. I have somewhere to be.” Alex moved in front of Austin, his hands up in a defensive position as he shook his head back and smiled at his friend. “Alex….move”

He shook his head again. This time moving his arms and folding them over his chest to stand strong in front of the much bigger man. “Aus, I know there is something going on here. Whatever it is, you don’t have to face it alone.” Austin growled, he reached out and shoved Alex to the side going to move past him. Alex reached out grabbing Austin by the shoulder, Austin turned and with his right arm, with very little effort, shoved Alex backward against the ropes.“Hey big guy….we’re all friends here.”

Austin took a deep breath and went to turn, out of the corner of his eye he saw Sonja. Instead of the usual authoritative look that she would have in her eyes, she looked at Austin with sadness and disappointment. This stopped Austin in his tracks, he shook his head and looked over his shoulder at Alex turning back around moving his head in a small note towards the corner of one of the rings to bring him over. “My sister…the scum bag she had a kid with…he’s not dead, he’s a lying piece of trash….I don’t know what to do.”

There was a book in Austin’s eyes. A look that many other people would mistake for anger. And while there was definitely some anger there, it was something else. Something that only someone who had been in the exact same place he was mentally would know and recognize. Alex swallowed hard, he reached out putting his hand on Austin's shoulder to make sure he looked right into Alex’s eyes “Don’t do it.”

“What?” Austin seemed confused, but not confused as to what Alex was talking about, confused as to how Alex knew what he was thinking.

Alex swallowed hard, trying to work up the confidence to share one of the darkest moments of his life with Austin. “When Dylan died, I wanted revenge. I was angry.” His voice started, it mixed with his breathing as his heart seemed to jump out of his chest and up into his throat. Alex had to swallow hard to push it back down again. “I lashed out, I went after his friends. The guys who…”

He swallowed his heart again, Austin raised an eyebrow. His expression changing as he realise just how much pain this caused Alex. “You don’t have t-“

“No. I do.” He closed his eyes getting ready to continue. Alex took a deep breath and moved around leaning against the top rope. “The guys who gave him the shit he took, that killed him. I sat outside, I was ready to go in there and…” He trailed off, his hands closing into fists. “I was going to make them disappear. But, that wouldn’t have helped. It would have hurt the family I had left….”

His eyes filled with tears, Alex pushed everything down again and looked up right into Austin’s eyes. Austin swallowed hard and his body seemed to relax. He exhaled for what seemed to be the first time in minutes. There was silence between them, Austin cracked a small smile before ordering one word. “Thanks”

A few months later….

Alex felt good. The best he had in a very long time. Walking into the gym he felt confident, he was happy. He was ready to train and ready to spend time with all of the people that had come to train with him. Not only the established styles like Austin and Alicia but some of the new kids who had been on fire recently. He wanted to work with them all, speak to them all, give them the knowledge that he had accumulated in almost 20 years of professional wrestling.

He smiled, he gave a note to a group of the younger kids. He gave a wink to his wife who smiled at him and went back to her paperwork.

He moved around to the back of the gym. Finding Austin in the ring with a group of the younger guys. He was working out with them, hitting the ropes, explaining ring awareness and where they should stand, explaining how they should be close enough that they can move a limb to the ropes or under the bottom row as it will cause a break. Austin was working hard to help. Night and day compared to who he was a few months ago.

Austin smiled as he saw Alex jump up onto the apron. “Alright guys take five.” The group dispersed, Alex stepped into the ring and moved over to Austin with a smile. “Good kids…”

“Yeah. It’s good to see.”

“You see everyone looking at you champ?” Austin laughed and tapped Alex on the shoulder Alex simply shook his head and moves towards the ropes.

“You know….I don’t know if I’d have done it without you.” Austin went to protest. Putting his hands up and stepping forward going to open his mouth. Alex shook his head and put his finger up. “Let me finish…” he waited, Austin took a deep breath, and folded his arms over his chest waiting to see exactly what Alex would say. “Sometimes, you need that support. I never thought I needed it. But this gym. All of you. We look out for each other..so..thanks” Alex held out his hand. Austin went to say something, instead, he looked at Alex’s head reaching out to take it shaking it with just a smile and a nod. And understanding between them, that is what family does.

Redemption

He takes a deep breath in. Calming himself down before starting the usual promotional material before a match. But this is not a usual match. Championship matches are never what you would call ordinary.

”Redemption. It is a word that’s thrown around a lot. Especially in this business where everyone wants to write themselves a good story. Revenge, redemption, justification. All of these things are words that were used to describe our motivations in the business that we love. In this competition, you have to be the best. You have to be striving to be the best because the truth is, if you are not trying to be the best and you are not trying to be the top champion in a company that you shouldn’t be in that company or in this business. I always want to prove that I am the best. Whether that is winning a world championship, or stealing the show with a match against another top opponent. That is what you should do as a professional in this business. Always strive to be the best whether that means being a champion or putting your best foot forward.”

“For the longest time, I didn’t put my best foot forward. I have not been able to shake this feeling that I wasn’t the best that I could be. I would sit there and I would look in the mirror, and the man looking back at me was a reflection of a man who was broken and confused about his place in the world and his place in professional wrestling. This is all I have ever wanted to do. From the first time I saw it on television, from the first time I witnessed a professional wrestling match in person I have wanted to do this. However, that does not make me unique.”

“We all want that.”

“Legitimately, we all want to do this if not we wouldn’t be doing it. And so many origin stories have started with that exact visual. A little kid sitting on the floor of his lounge room, eyes glued to the television watching heroes of his time move around a professional wrestling ring and making magic. But very few of us get to climb the top of the mountain and look at themselves in the mirror and say that they are the best. And mean it.”

“But, I get to look in the mirror and say that. And mean it.”

He gives a small smile. And for the first time, we noticed where he is. A place where we have seen his stablemate, Alicia Lukas. Her family’s home. The plantation in Atlanta Georgia. Behind him he’s a long table, a beautiful white tablecloth stretched across the entire thing. A dinner party was planned for the members of Wolfslair. In Alicia’s hometown

“When I lost the world championship, When I felt it slip away and I heard the bell rang and I heard Jack Washington get announced as the new world champion a part of my heart broke. A part of my soul died. And confidence in myself and respect for who I thought I was faded away. I watched disappear, I felt it disappear and I hated that feeling. I went home I looked in the mirror and I saw a man who was a failure and for the first time in my career, for the first time in my life I had no answer.”

“Every other time I had lost a championship, whether or not that was a world championship or some other title every time I lost it I would go home I would look in the mirror and I would have an answer as to why. A mistake that I made, something in my preparation or something in the match that I screwed up with. Whatever it was manufactured or not it was an answer. It was a reason for me to get up the next morning, have my coffee, go for a run and then go to the gym. It was a reason for me to get up and keep going and striving to be the best and climb that mountain again. But when I last lost this world championship? There was no answer which means there was no motivation for me to get up in the morning.”

“Do you understand what that is like?”

“Do you understand what that means?”

“This is all I ever wanted to do and it was what I was made for, and I wake up in the morning after losing a incredible championship that I wanted to hold and after having an accomplishment that I was proud of slipped through my fingers I woke up and didn’t want to do this any more. And it was my own fault. It was my problem, my responsibility, and my motivation. That feeling deep down inside breaks you. And I needed to change it. So, instead of getting angry and coming out and demanding an automatic rematch…I took a step back.”

Alex slides his hands into the front pockets of his tight-fitting black jeans. A button-up white shirt over his upper body with the sleeves rolled up. A smart casual look with his hair tied back away from his face and his beard trimmed.

“I realised I had to fix it. I had to start from square one. I went back to the beginning and I promised I would fight back up from that position and God help me I did. I faced some of the best of the best and I watched as they overcame me and moved on. Some of the best in this business left me in the rearview mirror and went on to become better. And then came the roulette championship. I faced Cassian Reed who by all accounts was going to be the next big thing in this company. But I looked in his eyes and I saw someone who wasn’t ready. He lost. “

“He failed.”

“And I had a championship in my hands that I never wanted, that I never wanted to represent. But, in being a champion I’ve always had a certain sense of pride and I always want to do my best. So I did. And I wanted to go on and be the best roulette champion that this company has ever seen and I believe I made a good case but what would’ve put it over the top would have been me breaking records. I was seven days away from breaking the longest single reign record.”

“But, I had that taken away from me. In a way.”

“Mac Bane challenged me. He challenged me and in the end both championships got put on the line. And I got why. How would it have been fair for Mac to be putting his championship on the line and me have nothing to lose? So I get it. I understand. But in Mac wanting a credible opponent, he robbed me of being able to say I was the longest raining Roulette champion of all time. And it was either because he wanted a name he could put on his resume as someone who he beat while my name still has some relevancy, or it was because he wanted a legitimate challenge and which ever story it is you believe you have to realise that it was his decision.”

“And it was the wrong one.”

Alex shrugs, he moves across the freshly cut green grass. The sun going down and leaving a beautiful purple and orange hue in the sky.

“Just like demanding a rematch against me is the right one. You see the world championship has been treated horribly over the last couple of months. Jack Washington won it, Lost it and walked away, Mark cross want it, lost it and walked away. I will give you all the credit in the world Mac you didn’t leave. And I’m not about to stand here and tell the world that you are not a great champion because the truth is as brief of a run you had with the championship you are still a dominant human being who knows how to get in that ring and beat the hell out of anyone in front of them. You put everything on the line every single time you get in that ring.”

“You are a hell of a competitor. You are someone who many people should be intimidated by to get in the room with.”

“I’m not going to take that away from you. The truth is I couldn’t even if I wanted to. You, I’d like a certain other two people stayed in this company. But it goes further than that. Kris Ryan’s lost and bailed too. So did Griffin and as much as I hate myself, and have a certain amount of regret in that situation, the truth is that so many of the former world champion to help this title over the last year and a half have disappeared after losing it. So the fact you have stuck around makes me smile. But the difference between you and me is that when I lost I went back to square one and I earned my way back up until I was undeniable. Until even you the world champion had to recognise that I was a threat.”

“But you?”

He can’t help but chuckle again, turning to look over at his stablemates who have now all arrived as well as other members of the gym. The food getting ready to be brought out signaling Alex to come over and eat in the gentle Georgia climate.

“Do you remember what you said to me right before our match at violent conduct? You talked about how my group was a shell of its former self. You talked about all the things you have done since you got here and about how you are a triple Crown champion. You ran me down and spat on my legacy while saying that you were dominant, basically repeating what I already said. You then said if I was able to beat you that it was not something your pride would allow.”

“Apparently Mac your pride wasn’t hurt enough that you couldn’t go crawling to Chris and Mark to beg for your rematch, of course that’s after telling Jack and Mark they would have to “earn it” aren’t you lucky I’m a fighting champion?”

“This is, I was happy trying to dominate the roulette division. I was happy trying to break those records and facing the best that division had to offer. The people who you decided to shit on. And it’s funny because I repeatedly called out Caleb storms for somehow getting championship opportunities handed to him time and time again. Now, while you have a right to get an immediate rematch, being the former champion, the fact you decided to throw yourself under the bus with your comments before our championship match at violent conduct really doesn’t help you does it?”

“You said you wanted the Black Dragon. And at violent conduct, you’ve got him. You want to talk about my group like we mean nothing when Austin is dominating the mixed tag team division with Tempest, when Miles Kasey, who is a member of my gym could be the next roulette champion? When Johanna Krieger has still destroyed almost everyone she has face and Alicia is a bonafide legend who is the only person who would actually be a challenge for your wife? You talk about how you have dominated in such a quick fashion. I see someone who can win championships but can’t actually hold onto them. I have too long rains with other championships in this company under my belt as well as one short one with this championship that broke me. And you think for 1 second that I’m going to allow that to happen again? You are a great professional wrestler Mac and you are someone who is a dominant human being, but I already beat you once. And I’m not afraid of you, I’m not intimidated by you, and I am going to do what I did last time and throw everything I have at you because this might be my final shot. And this is my redemption…”

And with that Alex turned, making his way to his friends and family. The people who mattered most.

It was so quiet now.

The gym, once bustling with more members and names that he could count or see. But now with the split into two locations, one in New York and the other in Orlando Florida, the large crowded bustle seemed to die out. As younger members travelled, as senior members left and relocated. The gym was more sparse. But, there were still so many names and stars.

Alex himself, Alicia, Johanna, Austin, Aiden, Kallie, Dickie. They were still here with many of the younger rookies and students. But, his sister being gone, Lachlan, Miles and Sierra being added but also relocating soon after.

Alex sighed heavily and looked over at the office, Sonja sat there, going through paperwork, it was just them in there now, Charlie’s desk gone. He shook his head and ran his hands through his long dark hair. Alicia coming up behind him, her arms folded over her chest. She sighed heavily trying to get Alexs’ attention, he stared away into the distance, distracted in his thoughts. Alicia sighed again and followed it up with a cough, clearing her throat. Alex raised an eyebrow and turned ”If you’re sick the gym is the last place you should be”

Alicia rolled her eyes and made a face, obviously done with Alexs’ shit. She moved around to his side looking left and right. ”A lot more room in here now.” Alex gave an agreeable nod as Austin James Mercer locked Aiden Reynolds in an ankle lock, Aiden kicked trying to get out of it, the young Australian unable to as his tag team partner and friend Dickie Watson laughed and cackled hysterically on the ring apron. ”I miss Charlie…”

Alex let out a groan and folded his own arms over his chest with a glance over to her. ”I know what you’re doing Alicia.”

”What do you mean?”

Alex turned towards Alicia, raising an eyebrow with a deadpan expression on his lips. Alicia smirked and gave a shrug. ”I miss her too, I also don’t like how the gym feels right now...you know? I mean, did I make a mistake here?” He turns away from the rings, the mats, the office, moving across to a bench slowly sitting down and holding his head in his hands. ”Opening a second gym, I get that we needed space to grow. But what if…”

”What if?”

He shook his head. ”What if, I have diluted Wolfslair?”

Alicia raises her eyebrows again and moves to sit down next to Alex, her hands gripping the bottom of the bench as she sits forward watching everyone work out together. Working on grappling, ropes, conditioning. Learning from each other, working together. All of it. ”I don’t think you did.” Alex looks up to see what Alicia does, she smiles to herself and leans back against the brick wall behind them. ”We needed more space but also new blood. Bringing in others just means that we will have new people to work with. It’s what you always wanted.”

”Yeah.”

He didn’t sound convinced. He just sounded like he was doubting himself, like he fucked up. And it’s what he felt to, Alexs’ heart dropped into his stomach. His mind raced and he felt like panicking. Then, he felt it. A hard slap across the back of the head. His eyes darting sideways to Alicia who shook her head. ”Don’t be a dumbass. Look around.”

He looked up, scanning the gym. A mixture of rookies, veterans and current stars worked together. Moving around the gym, smiling and laughing. Getting better and better. Alex took a deep breath in and slowly smiled. ”I get it...I still...I just hope Charlie ansd the others are going to do well.”

”Charlie is smart Alex...she’s a great athlete, a champion in wrestling and MMA. And...she’s smarter than you.”  Alex laughed looking at Alicia, she just smiled and shrugged tapping him on the shoulder. ”I’m not wrong am I?” He shook his head and got to his feet. Alicia did too, moving across to in front of Alex. ”The Orlando gym will succeed, so will we. No one has done what we have, the amount of titles from all these different companies? It’s insane. But, let’s add some more..”

She gave him a wink and a smile moving towards where Johanna and Kallie were working out. Alex watched and gave a small nod and smile. He felt better about it. The brand needed to grow, and things would only get better. But, he still missed his sister, even as proud as he was. But now...he had a match to prepare for. A match where he would again go in blind to the stipulation and rules. As was the way with the Roulette title...and the division he was champion of.

Three Strikes

”Here we go again, eh?”

Alex Jones, the name alone should inspire feelings inside anyone who knows anything about this business. His long wavy hair, tied back away from his face A scowl on his lips, his beard looking a little longer as hey sneers.

”Every single hoop they put in front of me I jump through. Gladly. I have been resurrected. Brought back up from the streak of losses I was on. And don’t think I don’t remember how it felt and what I was doing. Don’t you think for one second those failures aren’t burned unto my mind. The memory if each one and the feeling after. Fenris, Ben Jordan, Jack Washington. All of them. Right here.” His finger raises to his temple. ”And I was still here, still fighting. Through every single challenge I wanted to get better. Even as I questioned my place and my future.”

Alex shakes his head and folds his arms back over his chest.

”Even as others questioned it. In face I want you all to cast your minds back to last year. Last year I beat Griffin Hawkins for the SCW world title. And he left. Now, I have since hashed out my issues with Griff and I wish him well and I’d love to see the rocker back in an SCW ring doing what he does best, but he still left. Then, I lost the title to Jack Washington, my slide began. I let the things people like him said get to me.”

“I let the doubt and self loathing sink in and with each match and each loss I felt my heart and love for this business slowly dwindle down further and further. I felt my future getting darker and my career coming to an end.”

“But then I saw everything I had said come true. I told you all that Jack Washington was great at the time but he would fade away because he didn’t have the stamina to reach the top and stay there. And sure enough, Jack Washington, after beating me lost to Kris Ryans, then after regaining it, lost to Mark Cross. And since then Jack Washington has disappeared, Kris Ryans went back into retirement and Mark Cross got overshadowed and beraten by Mac Bane.”

“As short as my reign was, atleast it mattered.”

“You can’t say that about Jack Washgintons, who held the title longer but made people switch off in mass. You can’t say that about Kris Ryans, who came back then walked away cause he didn’t have the heart. You can’t say that about Mark Cross, he won a tournament, held the title and then stopped caring. Now, Mac? Mac is a name I know, Mac is a guy I can see as a dominant champion to bring back glory to the SCW’s alleged biggest prize.”

He pauses for a moment and reaches over grabbing the SCW roulette championship up and over his shoulder.

“See, this right now means more than the Internet and the world titles. Maybe Mac can bring the title back to the prominence it had when guys like Fenris, Austin, Ben Jordan and myself fought for and held it. Or. Maybe Mac will be just like Cross, Washington and Ryans. Lackluster.”

He adjusts the belt and swallows before shaking his head.

”I am closing in on breaking records. And I said since I won this that it’s what I wanted to do. I wanted the roulette championship to matter. So I could show that it isn’t simply winning the title that makes you a champion it’s defending it. I wanted to show everyone that I was worthy or it, that I was truly ready to make up for the performances I had that let the company and myself down. And, I hold this title till the end of the month and I will have had a longer title reign than the last five combined. I keep defending it and I prove what it is to be a fighting champion, taking on anyone the company deems worthy.”

“With that being said. Caleb Storms. He isn’t worthy anymore.”

“See, a few months ago I was honestly proud of Caleb. I looked at someone who had fought back against criticism and had fought back against people to finally earn a little respect and keep coming back for me. A guy who was hungry to prove the doubters and haters wrong and I respected that. I respected what Caleb had done since that fateful day where Austin almost took his head clean off. And I told him and all of you that. I was honest and it was from the heart. But we fast forward a few months and where are we know hmm?”

He pauses again and shakes his head glancing at the roulette title.

”You’ve had two chances Caleb, two chances to take this championship from me. First time was with Miles Kasey there too, and I made Miles tap, giving you an out to talk about how I didn’t beat YOU. And, the SCW management team heard you, giving you another opportunity in yet another triple threat match. An ultimate X over the pool match, one that is a staple of the Summer XXXtreme cruise. And you again lost, but had the out that I never pinned you or made you submit.”

“How many times are you going to use excuses and come up with things to say as reasons to get title shots? How many more Caleb?”

“This is your third match against me for this, the third opportunity you have been gifted by SCW. Three strikes and you are out.”

“And what makes this worse Caleb, is the realisation that you have NEVER beaten me. Ever. Not here, not in Honor. You just cannot get the job done. And, hey I’m not saying it’ll never happen, you could get lucky, lightening could strike and I could get complacent. But right now? I have all the reasons in the world to beat you. I have title records to break, I have points to prove and I had an intense,  burning desire to shut your mouth. Cause this plucky underdog spiel that you throw out there month after month, year after year is becoming tiresome.”

“After I beat you this time you need to take a step back, realise that the broken record in your brain that causes you to spit the same bullshit out time and time again needs to be changed and you need to look at life and professional wrestling in a different way. Show some respect, acknowledge when you lose, don’t just ignore it and act like it never happened, don’t make lame excuses. Own up to it Caleb. Be a fucking man.”

“Like I did...like I admitted. Cause, and this is free advice kid, you can’t get over your failures...until you admit they exist. So I am about to give you another lesson...and another failure…”

“You’re welcome

Orlando.

It was all in placer. The new gym, the transfers, the ideas. Alex smiled as he finished filing the paperwork, a sigh escaping his lips. The last few weeks had been hectic but rewarding. New contracts had been signed, new ideas and policies put in place. The Wolfslair twitter accounts had been active and interest had flooded in from new names and talents. There was a part of Alex that felt bad, conflicted. His sister had agreed to take up a head trainer position in Orlando. They wouldn’t see each other as much. And as such, in taking the position, she had resigned her spot in Kingdom Pro, vacated her Atlantic title.

Charlane “Charlie” Jones was a star there, she had returned to the wrestling world after a stint in MMA and also as a bodyguard and personal trainer. She had been successful in everything she did. But now, now she was stepping away from the ring. It was her decision, her idea, but that didn’t make Alex feel any more uneasy.

He swallowed hard and shook his head turning around to sit at his desk, his eyes flashing over to the background. It was a “team” picture. The originals. Charlie, Alex, Sonja, Alicia, Austin. The first ones there. In the beginning it was Alex and Sonja, his wife inspiring him to do it, to open it. Then his sister, then Austin and Alicia. He smiled and shook his head, how far they had come in the last couple of years still astounded him. From a small gym with a small group to the name they had become and the group that had taken over SCW.

The door opened and Charlie poked her head through with a small smile. ”You got a minute?” Alex smiled and gave her a nod, she stepped through the door closing it behind her. It was just Alex and Charlie in there, Sonja having stepped out to go talk about merchandising the new logo. Charlie sighed and sat down across from Alex, her arms folding over her chest as she swallowed hard. Alex raised an eyebrow, her body language showing trepidation and anxiety.

”You ok?” Charlie shrugged and sat forward clasping her hands together on the desk.

She let out a sigh and looked her brother right in the eyes. Her long black hair was braided and tied back, she and Alex looked similar, in everything. Height, build, fac%ial features. You could tell instantly they were related. ”I wanted to talk to you about Orlando…” Alex stayed silent, he gave her a small smile trying to be warm and understanding, he wanted to know what was on his little sisters mind. ”I have no problems moving, I have no problems helping out, but...are you sure I should be head trainer?”

Her voice faltered, she looked away, Alex was confused, Charlie had usually been so confident, in traini9ng and in her career. She had come a long way from the awkward, unsure teenager who questioned her place in the world. ”I can’t think of anyone else that would be better for it, why?” Charlie looked back up and shook her head.

She turned and looked out at the gym through thew window, she watched Alicia Lukas and Johanna Krieger talking, Austin James Mercer and Aiden Reynolds working in the ring and Kallie Reznik chatting toi Lachlan Kane. She let out a sigh and looked back at her brother. ”You’ve been the leader here, the driving force. Wolfslair has become a success because of you. I just don’t want Orlando to fail...and I don’t know if I should be the one leading it, Maybe Austin sh-”

Alex put his hand up and shook his head. ”This place got successful because of all of us. You put in just as much work as me, I couldn’t do this without you…” He sighed and pushed to his feet moving over to the window, he pointed up and out at the wall where replica belts and trophies hung, he turned back to Charlie with a smile. ”You see all that? All those titles our members have held? We have all been a part of that Charlie. You, me and everyone out there.”

Charlie gave a nod and smiled, but there was still doubt, doubt that Alex could see and feel. ”I’m glad you have that confidence in me. But still. I have no idea what to do Alex. I can’t go both….wrestle and train...and I’m hoping I made the right decision.”

His heart dropped, he looked away from Charlie and his eyes moved to trail upwards. The replicas of Charlie’s Portland Pro Rogue title, her TFW MMA womens featherweight title and the Kingdom Pro Atlantic Championships all hung next to each other. ”I’m sorry, I’m sorry I put you in this position.” He turned and Charlie went to talk but Alex kept going. ”You have given up and sacrificed so much for this, and now it’s cost you a championship run you earned and deserved…” He trailed off, Charlie got to her feet moving across the office.

She reached out, her arms wrapping around Alex pulling him into a hug, he squeezed her back, the feeling rushing over them as it was awkward, both siblings never being good at expressing their love for one another. ”It was my decision Alex. Not yours.” She paused and stepped back with a small smile. ”If I didn’t believe in Wolfslair so much then I wouldn’t have done it..”

Alex laughed to himself and smirked. ”And you proved the kind of leader you can be by making that sacrifice. So why are you doubting yourself?” It hit her, the realisation that he was right, she again gave her older brother a nod and smiled.

”Well...I guess I’m moving to Florida.”

The king’s fall.

Alex Jones holds the Sin city wrestling roulette title in his hands, his eyes looking over the ornate design, the clever use of the roulette wheel in the middle, his name at the bottom, his head shakes as he laughs to himself and looks forward.

”And still the champion.”

He scoffs and shakes his head before setting the title down next to him and pushing himself to his feet.

”That’s what I’m supposed to say right? I’m supposed to celebrate the fact I’m still the roulette champion and that I defended my title again. See, that’s what a weak person would do, that’s what someone insecure would do. I defended my championship against Miles Kasey and Caleb Storms, that was a defence, that was something to be proud of. But the match against The Troll? Should I be proud of that? Should I look at the records and smile about having two defences? Or should I move on and be prepared for my next match? The truth is, I’m not sure where to go with my career in SCW. None of us do. Austin is gearing up for a tag title defence, Alicia and Johanna are both wondering where their place in the Bombshells division is, and me? Well, I’m going to do everything I can to keep this SCW Roulette title and to make the title mean something greater.”

“I want it to become a prize jewel in this company. To continue my resurrection.”

“My rebirth.”

“And that is what the last few months have been about. Reinvention, coming to terms with the fact I may no longer be the competitor I once was but accepting the simple fact that even though I’m not the competitor I was I’m still better than most of the roster. I am still a goddamn threat and I am still good enough to not only defend the roulette title but maybe win the Internet title in the future, become a grand slam champion and maybe even become a two time SCW world champion. And, truth be told, even though the grand slam is a goal, if I were to defend the roulette title enough to perhaps elevate my name back to the main event scene, well, I wouldn’t say no…”

“Because I have unfinished business.”

Alex swallows hard and shakes his head slowly.

”My world title run was horrible. It was an utter disaster. I did all I could to win it, I said everything I could to get in the mind of the champion at the time. And once I won it, once I held the Sin city wrestling world title in my hands I felt an urge to defend it, to be the champion the title deserved. Only to be beaten by a kid with a chip on his shoulder. A talented kid, but still a kid. And my title reign was so bad, so shitty, that even the company forgot about it. That is how bad my time as the champion of this place was. So, one day, when I am done defending the roulette title and someone is good enough to take it from me...well...maybe I will pull my socks up and come for the Sin city wrestling world title again…”

“Now, why am I mentioning this dark time in my own history and my career? Why am I bringing up the fact I failed as a world champion? Simple. I’m facing someone who I have that in common with. Senor Vinnie.”

“The six foot eight former world champion from Tijuana. A guy who has been the thorn in the side of Wolfslair for a long time now. A guy who Austin has gone to war with many times and lost not one but two championships too. A guy who teamed with Alicia Lukas in the blast from the past tournament. Someone who she was too nice to say cost them the tournament. It seems like Vinnie has been involved in our business for years. And, hey, I can’t deny he has had success. Vinnie has been at the top of the card and has been a main event player since we came into the company years ago…”

“But, consistency has been an issue. And it’s something I can relate to.”

He shrugs and sighs heavily.

”Vinnie and I are both talented, both former world champions and both have unfinished business in the main event scene. And I like you Vinnie, I do, I like you more than I like alot of others in this company. You put it all on the line every time and you never quit, you stay in SCW and always have a goal in mind and want to be successful. You even admit your faults and admit when you lose and when someone has been your better. It’s something to be admired.and respected.”

“Now, I know you’ve got under Austins skin, I know he hates you with a burning passion and a desire that I honestly think needs to be let go.”

“See, that much anger, that much hatred is never good for people like us. It gets in your head and you have been able to win matches against him before the bell rings.”

“But, I’m not going to fall into that trap. I’m not saying you’re not good enough to beat me Vinnie, truth is you are. You’re good enough to beat me without resorting to the cheap cheating tactics you have been using. But, with that being said, I am on a renaissance in my career. A rebirth leading to my future in this business. And as good as you are, as good as you have been and could be again, consistency has not been your friend. It hasn’t been your friend in or out of the ring and as you walk down that road I want you to know that I understand and get it...and that I will never underestimate you.”

The Expansion

The gym was packed. It was 9am on a Tuesday. The main floor had classes running, the gym had kids in there working out with Austin. The submission mats had two competitions going. The rings were full. Alex shook his head and sighed. He was happy, his baby had grown and he was looked at as a great trainer. But, things were getting more difficult. To schedule times and classes, but also allow his elite members, Alicia, Johanna, Austin, Miles, Lachlan, Kallie, Aiden, Dickie, Kerberos, Charlie...to train and prepare for matches or for their injury rehabilitation. He shook his head and sighed moving over towards the weight gym where Austin was.

Alex could see the annoyance on his face as he tried to keep it organised, make sure people who had never lifted weights before did it in the right way while also trying to get his own work out in. The huge upper body of Austin not quite getting a sweat going. Something Alex knew was important to Austin.

He moved back around to the grappling mats. A whole line of young girls stood around, watching as Charlie Jones, Alex’s sister who was recently taking time off from the wrestling business, just finishing up a few dates for Kingdom pro, demonstrated a submission hold on one of them, she groaned and tapped, Charlie letting go.Alicia had her arms folded over her chest staring off like she was distracted. Meanwhile Kallie was there trying to calm Johanna down, who clearly wanted to tear every single one of these new girls apart.

He chuckled.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Aiden stood in the ring with Lachlan and Miles talking as the new guys hit the ropes, the wrong way. Aiden shook his head as Miles went up to them to show them the right way. Lachlan rolled his eyes and looked over at Alex shaking his head. He got what Lachlan was trying to say and he gave a nod back. Wolfslair had become McDonalds. No longer a quiet concern, with the success and growth they had attracted attention and so many beginners, kids straight out of high school or college who had stars in their eyes and wild ideas….

That wasn’t what Wolfslair was supposed to be. But there was a spark. When the beginners and intermediate classes went home, or in the early hours of the morning. The pros would be at it. That was the real Wolfslair. The real group and meaning. And Alexs’ dream. But, to keep that dream alive and thriving he needed the new names and members, he needed them to pay their fees and work hard and learn.

”This looks serious.” Sonja broke the silence and concentration, Alex turned and gave her a small smile, his arms still over his chest as Sonya reached out and touched his shoulder lightly. ”Quite the little family we have here now.”

He smirked and shook his head. ”Little”

Sonja sighed and moved around next to him. ”It seems like maybe, just maybe, we’ll need more room.” Alex gave her a small nod bringing his hand up to his chin before he registered what she just said.

”More room?. We can’t really expand here, there’s not room on either side and we need the parking lot.” Sonja shook her head as the cogs were turning in Alexs’ head, he clicked on what she meant. ”Should we look for a bigger place? When we first found this warehouse...we didn’t think it would ever be this big.”

And it was true, when Alex and Sonja first conceived Wolfslair and looked around, they figured they would need a place fo twenty to twenty five members. But expanding out to double that had put a strain on things. Sonja cleared her throat and moved her phone around, the screen on a larger warehouse, a bigger piece of land, and an area closer to home and only twenty five minutes from here. He couldn’t help but laugh and smile turning to her. ”Always prepared aren’t you?”

”Not always...but I have put in a bid already…” Alex laughed again handing Sonja’s phone back to her, she turned heading back towards the office.

”Hey...what if I’d said no?” Sonja stopped and looked over her shoulder, a smile coming across her lips and a wink. Alex rolled his eyes and shook his head looking down and away. ”Right...stupid question…” She chuckled and moved into the office closing the door behind her as Alex threw his hands in the air looking over at Charlie. He motioned for his sister to come and talk. ”Hey...I have some news you might want to hear…”

The Bridge

”That was not easy for me..”

Alex held up the SCW roulette championship. A title that still had his nameplate on the bottom, a championship that as of the next Climax control he will have held for Seventy-seven days.

”I don’t just mean it wasn’t easy defending my title against two men at once. That is never easy. It’s never easy defending a championship period. It’s why we see so many people win them but lose them trying to jump over the first hurdle. When you win a championship, you become a target. People want what they can’t have. So they come at you, they chase you. And if you’re not ready for that responsibility? Well, you end up like the Barnharts facing Austin and Tempest last week. But, that still isn’t what I meant. It was easy to beat Caleb, easy to take him out and would have been easy one on one. I have no allegiance to him or what he wants.”

“I’m talking about facing Miles Kasey again. Seeing that kid come into this match and do all he could to take the title from me, and having to break his heart and keep it.”

“He’s a member of my gym, a good kid and someone with amazing talent who I can see becoming a star. And this setback will serve him well as he learns his trade and gains more and more knowledge. And I have always said, time and time again that you learn more from a loss than a win. So I hope Miles will learn from it, learn from his loss against Mac Bane too and become the professional wrestler and future champion we all know and hope he can be.”

Alex gives a small nod putting the roulette title over his shoulder moving around and stopping as he turns and leans against a nondescript white wall.

”But, the question remains, where do I go from here?.”

“I successfully defended my championship twice, and while I want to take the Roulette title to new heights I have to wonder, how?. How can I take what has been SCW’s “second” title and make it even more special? See this thing has been special due to the unique ruleset, some would say it’s a “gimmick”. We sign a deal to have a match, we spin a roulette wheel and we settle on a stipulation. It;s unique, it’s fun, it’s unpredictable. And it’s also hard to find a line of succession or contendership. And truth be told I don’t think I need one. I’ll face anyone at anytime.”

“I even have proof of that. My next opponent. Is the man affectionately known as The Troll.”

He sighs heavily, trying to hide his annoyance at having to face the man who has had the ire of most of the roster.

”But, this isn’t just about defending my title, is it Troll? See, last week you came out, during Miles’ match for the internet title, a match set up by Wolfslairs own licia lukas and you not only made your presence known, and interfered. But you cost Miles the title. He was going to upset Mac Bane, take that internet title and bring it to Wolfslair. You cost Miles that moment, that accolade. So now, you have been out in the ring with me. And that really isn't good news for you.”

“I get it though Troll, I do, you decide to use humor and outlandish things to mask your own insecurities. It’s happened for a long time in wrestling, shit Austins opponent this week, Bill Barnhart tries to do the same thing with his statements.”

“You’re really just harmless buddy.”

“I learned a long long time ago that people like you don’t know what you’re talking about. So they just flood the world with ridiculous bullshit. But this week, you have to get in the ring with me and feel what it’s like to go through real pain. A real fight. I’m a champion here, a legend in the professional wrestling world. And you? You’re just a sad little man who likes to run his mouth. But don’t worry Troll, I can’t end you and take you out of this business. Cause I made a promise to Miles.”

“I’m going to leave just enough of you to limp into a match against him, and trust me on this Troll...he’ll want his revenge…”

Reconciliation

Things were better.

Not perfect, not how it was. But still better. The students, the senior members and instructors all seemed to gell and get over the problems of the past. But there was still tension in the air. Alex opened the gym, nhe set everything up. Did his warm up, talked to a few members who turned up then went and sat in his office. Paperwork and deals, the less glamorous side of wrestling and having a gym. He moved his hands writing and signing things at a furious pace.

His eyes moved up as he knew he was being watched. Feeling eyes on him as he let out a small sigh and tilted his head determined not to acknowledge it. Alex had always been stubborn. He had that streak in him where he was determined to do things his way.

But marriage kind of ends that. Sonya was also stubborn, it was a miracle their marriage and life together has been so calm and collected. The two rarely if ever fight and instead discuss things. Sonya always, always had Alexs’ back and was someone he trusted. In his life, with his past relationships trust was a premium. So having her there, having Sonya as his rock was important. But right now, he knew what she wanted to say, he knew the discussion was coming and Alex was doing everything to avoid it.

Sonya though, was doing everything she could to make it obvious and get his attention.

From making subtle noises, to moving around in her chair to face him, to flicking rubber bands. Sonya was trying everything but her patience, it seems, had limits.

”Ignorance won’t get you anywhere Alexander.” Alex laughed under his breath and looked up before sitting back in his chair and clasping his hands in his lap with his eyebrows up. Sonya gave a roll of her eyes, a tut and click of her tongue before getting to her feet. ”You need to talk to him.”

”Who?”

She growled and turned her nose up. ”You’re not a fucking owl. You know who.” Her arms folded over her chest, Alex couldn’t help but audibly groan and get to his feet moving towards the window looking out at the main floor of the gym. Sonya stood next to him matching his gaze. ”Stop avoiding it.”

”I’m not. But everything has worked out.” He smirked, thinking back to welcoming Austin back and joking with him. Admittedly they had not talked since then, but this is how it had always been. Sonya wasn’t taking this as an answer turning and hitting Alex in the shoulder. ”What? Seriously, the kid is back, he’s working hard, everyone else is fine with him…” Sonya just stared. Her piercing blue eyes staying locked on Alex, he swallowed hard as she again folded her arms over her chest and her lips twisted into an unimpressed scowl.”Fine.” He turned and walked towards the door shoving it open as Sonya laughed and had a wry smile on her face. Alex grumbled and walked out across the gym.

Everyone looked trying not to be obvious as they did. Alex sighed and moved around into the weightroom finding Austin laying back on the bench press. He grunted and pushed up on the bar before looking over at Alex. ”Hey, little help?” Alex moved around lightly pulling the bar back into position and lowering it as Austin sat up, he wiped down where he was laying and got to his feet with a nod. ”Thanks.”

Alex gave a nod back and leaned against the door folding his arms. ”So, how you doing?”

Austin laughed and gave a small shrug before sighing heavily. ”I don’t know honestly. I apologised, I’ve been working with everyone. But something still seems, I dunno”

”Off?”

”Yeah. Like even though people accepted it all they still want the old Austin back.” He sighed and shook his head as he started to undo the tape around his wrists. He pulled on it hard and twirled it as Alex just stayed silent. ”But, I changed, I know I did. Maybe for the worse, but I just can’t go back to ignoring bullshit and just smiling happily ya know?” Alex smirked and nodded in agreement. Austin sighed and shook his head. ”But...I’ll keep my annoyance and anger for those outside the gym. In here, with everyone else?...we’re family.”

Austin smirked and shrugged his shoulders as Alex stepped forward. ”I have no problems with that. Thing is, I get it. I always got it you just didn’t want to listen.” He paused not wanting this to come off as a lecture. ”You kept telling me I went to far, I told you back then it was us against them. Wolfslair isn’t just a gym it’s an idea. Outside the ring, we help each other, but inside the ring, we destroy everyone.”

He offered his fist, Austin looked down and smiled before bumping it with his. A wave of relief washed over Alex as he backed up and looked around the area. Austin had been putting in work, he was determined. And it was now time for Alex to match that.

The Bulldog

”Here we go. My first defence.”

Alex smiled, his long hair tied back as he looked over at the roulette title.

”You know, many people said that I shouldn’t have had that title shot and to be honest they were right. I didn’t really do anything to earn it. But, that is what stock gets you. You built up equity in a company and the business itself and you get opportunities based on that. And I get it, some people don’t think that is fair. But people like myself, Austin, Alicia, even Johanna. We have earned that kind of treatment. Some others have to, whether you like it or not Crystal has, Roxi has, Fenris has, Mercedes, Ben Jordan, Vinnie, even Myra Rivers with her historic reign.”

“When you stay in a company, roll with the punches and constantly show that you are the top, you get opportunities.”

“The ones I can’t understand are those like Jesse Salco, Caleb Storms and my opponent this week Bill Barnhart.”

“Those names are people who have had longer tenures and gave handed opportunities for simply not knowing when to fucking quit. And, hey I understand, sometimes when people get on a little run they get rewarded, a small carrot thrown at them. Caleb took that carrot and made it into a salad by “winning” the internet title.,”

Alex pauses for a moment and rolls his eyes, trying to not go on a rant he clears his throat and refocuses back on Mr Barnhart.

”Bill, it’s a matter of public record here that you have a win over me. On that night you were at the best you have ever been, you were the bad ass veteran we all thought you were. You were a big beefy bad ass. And me? Well, I wasn’t. I have been going through so many things when it comes to my career and standing up in the last two years but, a few weeks ago it clicked. I’m not the same man I was fifteen years ago. Not physically and not mentally. I can’t act like the same angry kid with a chip on my shoulder when I’m 36 years old. That isn’t how life works.”

“So yeah, the best you was able to beat me one on one. Awesome.”

“But, ask yourself. Was I at my best then?”

“Was the Alex Jones you beat the same one that stands before you now? I have been doing this in some form or another for 18 years, from the moment I graduated high school and sighed up at a gym I have been eating, sleeping, living and breathing professional wrestling. I have had my ass kicked by bigger and better men than you. I have also beaten better men than you. I showed I can keep up with the new crop of kids when I beat Milo Kasey and then Cassian Reed. Two exciting talents that will only get better.”

“What have you done Bill?”

Alex laughs to himself and shakes his head before pulling the Roulette title up and over his shoulder.

”You got handed this shot because you impressed in a losing effort. I needed and wanted to defend this title so they gave you a shot. And now here you are gearing up for this opportunity but while I can sit here and talk about how you’re a veteran and you try hard week in and week out you will never do the same for ANYBODY. You won’t look at a man like Austin James Mercer and give him props for being a world champion or the internet champion, you don’t give a shit about anyone but yourself.”

“You beat me, you were better than me. Once.”

“But I have been consistently better than you.”

“At into the void Caleb Storms and Milo Kasey are waiting for me and I will be the one to go on to face them because they deserve someone who will appreciate the gravity of the match ahead of them and this championship. A title built on unpredictability and chaos, one that should not be held by someone as horrible and predictable as you. Seriously Bill, go back and watch your promos against me or Austin, or anyone for that matter. Have you ever given a shit about the company or peoples accomplishments in it?”

He pauses again waiting for an answer that simply will not come.

”You bury your head in the sand, make stupid jokes and expect any of us to give you respect? I can look at Caleb and Milo, mI can see what they have done and what they couple accomplish where ou, well, don’t. And I get why Bill. See I asked what you’ve done since you beat me. And if you asked me that question. Well. I’ve been a triple crown champion. I won the Sin City Wrestling mixed tag titles with Johanna and went on a great run defending them the most.”

“Where is your mixed tag title reign with your wife Bill?”

“I must have fallen asleep and missed the whole thing. Or hey what about your world title reign, have you had one of those in SCW? Cause I sure as shit have. I beat Griffin Hawkins and watched him sulk his way out of the company and throw a massive tantrum about it. And then to top it off. I have this. The Roulette title. So, I am one championship off being able to say I am a grand slam champion, I am a triple crown champion and I have earned it every damn step of the way and now? Now that I have been able to step back and realize i'm not the same kid as I was in 2003 I can finally move on, get better and realise that the rest of my career can still be great.”

“But, that’s the difference between us Bill. I recognise others, I recognise the faults in myself and I push forward to overcome them and be better.”

He steps back and smirks, his hand clutching the title hard as he looks at the nameplate and back up again.

”So, after all that. After going through our history as well as your attitude towards not only myself but everyone else. After reminding you of what I have been able to accomplish just in this company, I have to ask..yet again…”

“What have you done?”

One Bad Day

It was still pitch black outside as the clock told him it was time to wake up. Red flashing numbers along with a small buzzing hum right next to his head forced him to get up.; The body didn’t feel the same as it used to. Pops, cracks and aching muscles were his greeting as he sat up and turned. His eyes looked out the window across the room that faced out onto the street. The snow was falling, the white flecks hitting the window as the street was bitch black aside from a few street lamps that were obscured by the falling blanket that seemed to not let up.

Alex groaned as he got to his feet, the heated floor helping some as he moved from the bed, his wife Sonya stirring but still asleep.

He moved his arms, rolled his neck and shook out his body. Alex was still in great shape despite being in his late thirties and having years of landing on hard surfaces and getting beaten up under his belt. He took a long deep breath before moving into the bathroom. The difference in temperature under his feet shocking him as he stepped from the heated floor of the bedroom onto the cold white tiles of the bathroom, the cold shot up his feet and ankles, right passed his knees and up his body. He was definitely awake now.

His hand reached out, turning on the water waiting for it to get warm as he washed his face, standing back up and looking into the mirror. There were bags under his eyes, a few grey hairs in his beard that had once been jet black. Crows feet had formed in the corners of each eye. It seemed as if Alex had aged ten years in ten weeks.

The stress had gotten to him, built on top over and over.

It wasn’t just the losing streak. It wasn’t just his in ring performances. No, even in loss Alex felt as if he could be proud of the fight he put up against some of the best. It was the gym. While everything was going well financially. And while new members had come to train and be the best, there was one member, a brother, family, who had been causing him pain, frustration and anxiety. And he was about ready to snap.

He had been awake five minutes and already hatred had entered his chest, his hands gripping the bathroom bench hard and squeezing it as a small growl bubbled from his throat.

He was angry, and this wasn’t the first time. There were precious few moments in between waking up, looking over at his wife in a loving way, thinking about how lucky he was, before the reality hit him in the face like a brick. He would have to go to the gym, walk in and act as if business was usual, all the while knowing it was a lie.

He let out a small sigh and heard Sonya get out of bed, her footsteps getting closer as she leaned against the doorframe.

She gave him a small grin, her hair flipped over one side, her eyes still looking as if she could crawl back to bed. She wore one of Alexs’ shirts, her arms folded as he looked him up and down, he gave a small nod and smile back. ”Another day on the grind.” She was right of course. Wolfslair the group was successful in SCW, but the gym as a whole was growing in size and prominence. From the young kids who were just making their way in the business to seasoned veterans who had come to join.

Wolfslair the business was booming.

So, then why was Alex so miserable? Why did it feel like one bad experience was ruining it all? He took in a deep breath and looked over at Sonya. ”I don’t know how we keep doing this. Long days, hard training.” He paused and gave a small shrug leaning against the bathroom counter.”It should be fun right?” The question hung in the air. Sonya moved from the door frame and reached out grabbing Alex by the arm before sliding her hand to his intertwining their fingers.

She gave a nod back and pursed her lips together before standing on her tip toes to kiss him. While Sonya was an impressive physical specimen. In great shape, stong and fast, she was still only 5’6. ”Aren’t you having fun? Working with me everyday? And your sister? Not to mention all the kids we train...our little wrestle-babies” Alex laughed, he was always amused by the term. But she was right. Alex and Sonya had their son, they also looked after Alexs’ daughter Harley. But the kids at the gym were like their children too. Just in a different way. ”Just because one oifd them is acting up doesn’t mean life is going down the drain.”

He scoffed and shook his head. ”I know, I just….I don’t know how to stop it. Austin is tearing himself and the gym apart.”

He trailed off. Sonya put her head on his chest, Alex wrapped his arms around her as a reflex and gave his wife a squeeze. He couldn;t help but feel happy with her. She was what kept him grounded, prepared in life. Sonya was his rock. And now, without saying a thing she had helped him realise, it was nall going to be ok. He just needed to focus on what was important. And get his mind back into the ring. Where he could make a difference.

A final test

”Here we go again…”

Alexs’ voice cuts through the darkness. We fade in, he’s sitting on a chair with his arms leaning down on a table. In the hotel room he’s staying in prior to SCW’s climax control. Leaving New York a few days early, he needed time to decompress and get in the mindset.

”Another loss, another failure. I’m under no illusions here, losses happen in the world of professional wrestling, sometimes you go on streaks and pull yourself out of a tailspin. But this time? Well this time I’m not so sure of what I can and can’t do. Cause, to be honest I can hear the whispers, they’re getting louder and instead of them being said behind my back, well, they’re now being said in front of my face. Like I’m not even in the room. And it’s all the same. Alex Jones doesn’t have it anymore. Alex Jones is washed up. He was able to fluke that tenth world title and got rid of Griffin Hawkins for nothing…”

“I hear it, I do. And I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get in my head a little more than it used to. See, back in the day I wouldn’t care.”

“I’d ignore everything that was said because deep down I knew how good I was. I knew what I was capable of.”

“And now? Well, not the mind is willing but the body is struggling. I went toe to toe with Ben Jordan and put in a great performance, and lost. I got in the ring with Fenris and Austin destroyed it. I faced Vinnie and O’malley and came up short again. And yeah, three of those matches had extenuating circumstances. But, all that matters is if you walked out with the win or the loss. And I lost. And I’m man enough to admit it even if O’Malley wants to talk his shit like the child he is.”

Alex shrugs and looks away, having a difficult time maintaining eye contact with the camera.

”But, assessments about my performance aren’t the only whispers I keep hearing. I hear all the comments about Wolfslair, the group is splitting at the seams because of Austin and his actions. Alicia and Johanna have been silent and as a group we don’t look like a unit. And I can’t disagree with it. Things seem to be falling apart but at the same time Wolfslair has grown. The gym has gotten fresh blood injected right into it. Lachlan Kane and my opponent this week. Miles “Milo” Kasey have both joined.”

Alex can’t help but smile and take a long deep breath in before pushing up to his feet.

”And how funny is it that Miles and I get put up against one another a week after he decided he wanted to take up my offer to train at Wolfslair?. Now, Miles and I aren’t friends, we’re not close like I am with other members of the gym, but there is a reason I wanted Miles in there. When it comes to training in a group like this, going against each other on a regular basis the strongest gym has the strongest growth. And that’s why I wanted guys like Milo and Lachlan in there. See, Milo, I’m not blind to your talent, I think that’s clear. I can see the untapped potential and as good as you’ve been there’s still so much more you can do. So much more left to unlock.”

“That’s why you wanted to train with us right? You look at Wolfslair the group and see Austin, myself, Johanna and Alicia. You see ten separate title reigns between us just in this company. Then you see the gym and look at all the current and future stars. Training together, rolling together. Feeding off one another to try and become the best.”

“You know what the deal is with us Milo and I appreciate that.”

“You can add so much to the gym, just like we can help you, but, you have to put up with moments like this, when you will get booked against people you train with. And this time, well, it’s for a reason. See, you know my past kid, you know what I’ve done, I’ve been to the top of every single company I have been in. WWH, Honor, SCW. The last three major companies I stepped foot in and all three of them I held their world title. Honor wrestling was TWICE.”

Alex pauses and smiles with a nod.

”So this Milo, this random match. Is a test. It’s a tast for me to see just where you are in the pecking order on Wolfslair. And you can look at this two ways. You can either think you’re facing a fading star and the head of wolfslair, or, you’re facing a former ten time world champion who is hungry for a win and is eyeing off a young lion. I’m looking forward to this match, I want to see what you’ve got and win or lose you know I’ll be back in the gym ready to kick your ass the day after. And you also know because you had the balls to put your name on a contract to train with us that I respect you.”

“I look forward to seeing just what you have to offer and if I was right about you and I swear to god I hope I was. I am an excellent judge of talent Milo, so I am begging you to prove me right. I’m begging you to walk down to that ring and give me a fight.”

“Afterwards, I’ll shake your hand, I’ll thank you and we can go on with our lives, maybe you’ll learn something...but you’ll damn sure know you’ve been in a competition….lets light up the world kid…”

A broken pack.

”What the fuck was that?”

It was the night of Inception IV. The golden ring casino in Las Vegas Nevada. The limited crowd in attendance was still making noise as Alex Jones stormed backstage. Sweat poured from his body after a hard fought match against Fenris. He was sore all over, tired and beaten up. But all of that was overruled by the burning feeling of anger that now raged in his veins. He moved down the hallway passed the production crew and all the officials standing around to keep the show moving. Alex turned down the hallway towards the locker rooms knowing that is where Austin was heading.

The six foot six former world champion had his back turned to Alex and wasn’t paying him any attention. Austin turned into a room and Alex followed. The door shut behind Austin and Alex stopped in front of it, his hands were shaking, his body looking ready for a fight. But then it entered his mind, the doubt. Austin was his friend, like a brother. The two of them bonding over a love of wrestling and what it meant to their lives. Alex had been there for Austin when his father died. He had been there for the birth of his two children to celebrate it.

Was this worth breaking that bond?

Alex took a deep breath and tried to calm himself before entering. There was no point in blowing this up, there was no future in it. He ran his hands through his hair before reaching under his wristband for an elastic hair tie. He pulled his black hair into a bun and cleared his throat before entering. Austin was there, in his street clothes, his left arm still in the black brace as he had them folded over his chest. Alex took a deep breath and grabbed a towel before sitting down next to Austin, he toweled himself off getting the sweat from his body before tossing the towel into his bag.

Austin shook his head, a sneer coming across his face as he looked away from Alex disgusted. His heart sank. He hated disappointing people, he hated the feeling of a friend slipping away and a bond being broken. Alex leaned forward on his knees, his hands together as he thought of what to say. ”I’m not happy with what happened out there.” That was an understatement. Alex was furious, setting underneath the calm exterior. Austin had got involved, trying to hand Alex a win he didn’t deserve. A win that was not going to be earned unless it was from Alex’s own actions.

Austin snarled and looked as if he was trying to keep his own anger in. He turned back to Alex tilting his head. His voice was deep but commanding, this was not the same Austin that walked into Wolfslair years ago. This was a different animal all together. ”We had him Alex, I handed you Fenris on a silver fucking platter. And you refused to take it. What the fuck is wrong with you?” The question and attitude rubbed Alex the wrong way and gave rise to a different emotion. Shame. Alex felt it there, his old mantra of win at any cost had disappeared and been replaced in recent months. Since his loss to Jack Washington. Since losing the SCW World title.

”Winning like that, what would it have accomplished? You shouldn’t of been out there….”

Austins head snapped to the side, he pushed up from the chair he was sitting on standing over Alex, his hands balled into fists,he pushed his chest out like an alpha animal trying to assert his dominance and look bigger than he was. Not that Austin needed to look any bigger than he naturally was. His two hundred and sixty five pound frame had not lost anything with his injury. Austin worked out, he kept himself ready for when he was going to be cleared. His injuries almost completely healed. ”It hurts me seeing the pathetic shell you’ve become. The old Alex would have jumped all over Fenris, got the win and then celebrated like a conquering king after. Not whined like a petulant child.”

A child?

Alex’s eyes lit up, he also got to his feet standing face to face with his former protege and friend. He could feel the anger rising up again, the shame slowly fading as he had to fight every single urge in his body to just strike out at Austin, he swallowed hard and pushed passed him, Alex needed to get out. He needed to just get away. ”Alex…” He stopped in his tracks in front of the door. Maybe Austin realised he went too far. Maybe he would apologise. ”I expect you to fall in line.” He growled the words, forcing them out as if he was in charge. It was like the new lion, beating down the old leader of the pack.

Alex slowly turned and shook his head. ”Fall in line? Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?. Everything I have done was for the good of the Gym, for the good of the group. And now because I didn’t want or need your help you think you can dictate how I act?” There was a thickness that added into the air between them. The room felt smaller as their egos took up more space. Austin tilted his head again and stepped forward to Alex as they again got nose to nose. And then it happened.

crack

A hard right hand from Austin snapped Alex’s head sideways, he saw stars, or more accurately bright lights. He stumbled back into the door, Austin then ducked down and tackled Alex through it into the hallway, Alex hit the corner of a table, he regained his senses long enough to reach around and grab Austin in a front headlock to hold him in place. But in seconds they were surrounded. Mark and Christian were there with referees, officials and trainers as well as Alicia Lukas and Johanna Krieger. They pulled them apart. Austin put his hands up as Alex held his lower back. ”Get him the fuck out of here!” They pulled Austin away, Johanna followed Austin as Alicia looked over at Alex, before she could say anything Alex put his hand up to signal he was ok.

Alicia gave a small nod and followed Johanna and Austin. Alex went back into the locker room, he turned and sat back down on the bench letting out a deep breath while bringing his hands up to his face, his thumbs rubbing his temples as he felt a huge headache hit him like a ton of bricks. FUCK! He kicked his bag, he shook his head and couldn’t help but wonder.

Where do we go from here?

Luck of the Irish

”I don’t even know where to start here.”

His voice was deep and calm, but with a small solemn touch. There was sadness there being poorly hidden behind a smirking, arrogant face. His hair was tied back, his body covered in a tight fitting black shirt and bootcut jeans, his hands clasped together in front of him as he sat forward on a chair inside a nondescript room. He was alone. Very fitting.

”Failure, I guess that should be stamped on my headstone now when I eventually pass away right? The last few months have been one hit after another. One shot to the ego after another. As if my entire career has now been assassinated by someone up on the grassy knoll. I lost the SCW world title, I failed against Ben Jordan, I failed against Vinnie and then I lost to Fenris. Four  matches against some of the biggest names in the company. Four matches against former world champions. And each time I felt a little more of myself slip away. With that being said I can’t really feel cheated or make excuses. I lost those matches off my own back.”

“Some people would say that Vinnie and Fenris were both ones I should have won. But I failed to see Vinnie using cheap tactics and I turned Austins help away. And that last one. That last one is a match that I feel proud of.”

“I know, weird right?”

“But hear me out. Fenris and I got thrown into the situation. We faced each other one on one in a match neither of us were prepared for mentally. Now I won’t say it was a match neither of us wanted because let's face it, we are competitors. Fenris and I have the same attitude. Anytime, anyplace, anywhere against anybody. We went toe to toe, Austin got involved and I refused to win that way. Maybe that makes me a sad old man, maybe that means I have finally got to the point in my career where winning right means more than simply winning. I don’t know.

He shrugs his shoulders and sighed heavily before looking up again.

”I’m sure a lot will be made about the rift in Wolfslair. The fact Austin and I are clearly not on the same page, and yeah that is playing on my mind. The feeling of a family fracturing and falling apart. But with that being said, I need to get my head back into the game. The Blast from the past is starting and this year I’m not taking part. This year I chose to sit it out, because I don’t want to be a liability to anyone who is in it. That doesn’t mean I won’t be in action however. As Mark and Cheristian decided to book myself and O’Malley one on one. And hey, what’s another highly competitive match for me against someone who could very well be an SCW world champion?”

“But let’s get it out of the way early. I don’t like O’Malley. I don’t like his attitude, I don’t like his face, I don’t like his stupid fucking accent.”

“I think O’Malley is an arrogant, self righteous prick. And hey, I can be that way too.. O’Malley and I are close to the same age, but unlike O’malley I have the pedigree and record to back up my moments of cocky arrogance. I have a history that most people seem content to ignore or, in Jack Washington's case, make fun of and misrepresent to a criminal degree. But O’Malley? O’Malley has had an up and down career in SCW and SCU, he’s won titles and has tried to make the best of it and the more I think about it the more alike he and I are sounding. It’s probably why I dislike him to be honest. Without going to deep into my own fucked up mental state at the moment, I don’t like looking in the mirror, so I sure as shit don’t like looking at fucking o’Malley”

He scoffs to himself and swallows hard before getting to his feet and moving around a little grabbing a bottle of water.

”With all that being said, just because I don’t like someone doesn’t mean I can’t respect them. The last few months o’Malley has upped his game. Being the number one guy in SCU, being the SCW roulette champion, he has shown that he can hang with the best of the best and despite my string of losses, despite the fact I have been beaten down to the point of obscurity I am not a nobody, I am still a former world champion, I am still a future hall of famer and I am still a threat in this company. But, will O’Malley recognise that?”

“Will he show me the respect I deserve or underestimate me?”

“Will he look at Alex Jones and think of bringing his A game or will he look at me like I am nothing but a washed up has been who can’t buy a fucking win to save his life?. That would be a mistake, cause in this business the only thing you can count on is yourself and I am not going to stop fighting. I want the SCW world title back, I want to be able to redeem myself after the arrogant prick I became and how I let myself get drawn in and beaten by Jack, I want to earn that respect back. And I’ll do that by getting in that ring and giving all the effort I can. I am not done by any means in wrestling or SCW. So whether I like you or not, I can admit this is a challenge. So lets dance…”

Reconciliation…
New York, New York

The sun had gone down leaving an orange and purple twilight glow on the outside shining in. Everyone else had gone home for the day, classes over, extra training done. Alex stood alone in the huge warehouse that he and Sonja had christened “Wolfslair” A small nod towards Elena DeDraca-Mercer’s deceased husband Christian, owner of wolfpack management who was a silent partner. Alex stood in the corner, away from the rings, away from the grappling mats.

He leaned down, his hands wrapping around the large steel bar of a long weight. He jerked and lifted pulling it up to his chest and into the air and back down again. Over and over Alex used his legs, back and arms to pull the weight in the air, his veins popping out as blood coursed through them. Sweat dripped and fell, his black TapOut compression shirt clinging to his skin as he dropped the bar back down letting out a large sigh. A familiar voice breaking the silence and his concentration.

“You still lift like a girl.”

Alex laughed to himself and turned looking over his shoulder. Standing next to one of the rings was his younger sister Charlie. Her long brown hair tied back, her toned, muscular arms folded over her chest. Her lips twisted in a small grin. Alex shook his head and grabbed a towel throwing it over his head as he stepped forward. “Yeah well you always had better form than me sis.” Charlie rolled her eyes and scoffed before lightly punching her older brother in the arm.

“You have time to talk?. Or you too important Mr World champion?” Her voice was light and happy, obviously making an effort to keep things civil. The years since they were last alone seemed like an eternity ago. So much had changed. Alex went from an unknown independent wrestler to where he is today. Some would say he was a respected veteran. But someone who was still in his prime.

“Well, for most people I require an appointment but for you….I think I can make an exception this one time.”  Charlie sighed and stepped back leaning against the ring, her hands sliding down onto the apron pushing herself up onto it sitting down.

“You know how long it’s been since just you and I spent time together?” Alex gave a small nod and moved next to her leaning against the ring post. His mind flashing back to all the time they had spent in the gym, the laughter they shared, the good times and hard work.

“Yeah I know, but after what happened….I never...I never thought it would be right to just ring you. Besides it hasn’t always been pleasant between us.” He shot a small smile, hiding a lifetime of pain. Charlie and Alex were two different people.

Charlie kept her voice light and upbeat. Trying to seem happy. “I know, and I’m sorry Alex. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Pix and talking. She’s been helping me with a lot of stuff. And I...we need to talk about Dylan” Alex sighed heavily, his heart sinking into the pit of his stomach as he looked away awkwardly,

Charlie stayed silent waiting for Alex to say something, anything. “There’s only so many times I can apologise, only so many times I can try and show my remorse. I screwed up, I didn’t see it. I’ll never forgive myself Charlie….never...so whatever guilt trip you’re here to torture me with I-”

“No!” She turned and shook her head sliding her knee up onto the apron as she faced him. Her eyebrows raised as she reached out taking her older brother’s hand. “That isn’t it at all. I’m not here to make you feel worse or make you feel like it was all your fault...it wasn’t.” Her voice cracked a little Alex turned his head and looked down at her hand on his, turning his hand to grab hers to give her strength. “It took me a long time to realise it but, Dylan was self destructive, he was determined to walk his own path. You couldn’t have stopped him.” She chuckled to herself and sighed. “We’ve lost so much time Alex, I don’t want to lose anymore. We lost one brother, I can’t lose another one...and besides, I kind of want to be an aunt since Ana won’t let me near Harley.” Alex nodded and smiled slowly, he turned and hugged Charlie tight before pulling back.

He let out a long deep breath and felt a weight lift off his shoulders. A genuine smile instead of the forced one from moments before formed on his face. “Thanks….I needed to hear that….come on….Sonja will love to have you for dinner….”

Am I old?

Has the world now passed me by? I remember when being a champion meant being the face of a company. The first name that people identified with when a name or lettered suffix was mentioned. The face in the posters, DVD covers, the leading name on the marquee.

All of it, the visible past, present and future.

But somewhere along the way from the ideals I learned and lived by to now something has gone wrong. Wires crossed, the role of a champion confused with that of an entitled child.

See the role of a champion is to be the shining light. The leader. You live up to and honor the title you work for it. It does not work for you. You use it to inspire others to be better. To rally the troops in a way that befits the company and the status of champion.

But now the role of a champion seems to be that of an entitled brat. Holding it hostage and only turning up when asked. Doing the bare minimum in promotion and effort. It makes me sick. It breaks my heart. But hell I might just be old fashioned in my beliefs.

I might be a relic of a time when champions were champions.

I might just believe things that are now antiquated and have been overlooked, replaced, destroyed.

The gentleman's game is dead.

And I helped load the bullet and cock the hammer….

Once upon a time in Mexico….

This wasn’t the same Alex Jones. The man sitting in front of us now. His long hair down and shaggy. His beard a bit longer like he had forgotten, or not cared to trim it. But it wasn’t just his physical appearance. There was something off in his mannerisms. Something unsure in his eyes.

”I’m sure many are wondering what it was all about on Climax control. So many questions coming out of that show. What was I planning on saying towards the end? Why has my match with Ben Jordan and the loss of the Sin city title affected me so much?. Why did Austin act the way he did? And the truth is I don’t have all the answers. I just have more questions. More questions for Austin, more questions for myself. But it’s no secret that something has changed….in both of us…”

“He’s always been the more level headed one, and I have always been the one more likely to go scorched earth. Sometimes when I have snapped, Austin has been a true friend and pulled me out of it. But now, well, now I look in his eyes and there is a different dynamic.”

“It’s clear he lost even more than me…”

“And I want you people to understand something. In this business it’s easy to lose sight of your goals and your own personality. It’s easy to forget why you do this and what matters most. When I first started it seemed like I knew my own reasons and what I wanted to do. But really, when you’re a dumb kid, you know nothing. And quickly this business clouds you, it slowly comes down over your eyes and all you can see is black. It blinds you to your own intentions much less other peoples. This should be about simply proving you’re the best in the ring, match by match, week by week.”

“But, quickly you forget that how you win is as important as just getting the win.”

He looked up through his hair, his eyes snapping into focus as he slowly pushed up, his upper body naked with a pair of black jeans on his lower body, a black leather belt keeping them up with a silver wolf's head buckle. He moves across the room grabbing a tight fitting white shirt pulling it over his head.

”Somewhere along the way I lost sight of that. And when you stop looking ahead, when you stop seeing what is right in front of you because you’re simply blinded by your own arrogance then the law of the jungle comes into play. And if you don’t stay on top of your game, if you start getting old, those young lions man, they’ll sneak up on you. And that’s what happened with me, a younger lion came on up and snatched that world title from me and there was nothing I could do about it, and Austin, well he’s another one of these young lions and he’ll get plenty more shots. More chances…”

“But me? Nah, I had my shot and I took it, and in taking it I exposed Griffin Hawkins for the whiny quitter he is. And I should be proud of that, I should be proud that I exposed Griffin and he quit. See people like that, people who quit have no place in a company like SCW. I didn’t quit, I’m right here, I lost that title and got right into the ring with Ben Jordan, he and I burned the damn house down and I am damn proud of what we accomplished, so for anyone thinking that I was about to walk out of SCW because I lost has no idea what I am talking about or what I am capable of…”

“Now, what does the distant future hold for me? I don’t know. I really don’t. But what I do know is that I’ll be getting in the ring at Climax Control and I will be facing an old foe…”

“I’ll be facing a guy who I have gone to war with. A guy who I am glad to see back. In Senor Vinnie. And, hey I know many of you are probably shocked that I said I’m happy to see Vinnie back but I am. See SCW needs stars. We need all hands on deck to keep this company rolling and getting a guy like Vinnie back is great. He’s a former world champion, he’s the guy who took both the world and internet titles off of Austin. And this should be a great match, This should be something that the wrestling world focuses on and watches and gets excited about.”

He can’t help but laugh to himself. For a moment Alex could feel himself get excited about this match.

”It’s not like he and I are strangers to one another. We have gone at it many times in SCW, and each time Vinnie and I have stood across the ring from one another we have gone tooth and nail. And I can promise you, that this time won’t be any different. Vinnie is a top flight competitor, a former world champion and someone who no matter the situation always puts it all on the line. So, I know what is going to happen, I know that I will be in for a dog fight. And I invite every, single one of you to watch.”

End of the road
Dallas, Texas

He had never been so angry. Not even when he would get into arguments with his father. He understood, Charlie wanted to protect Dylan. She and Alex got into an argument, yelling back and forth. She believed Alex was being to hard on Dylan, that Alex needed to be more understanding. And he’s tried. For weeks and months Alex had tried to get his brother on the straight and narrow. The drugs have been an issue, Dylan using them to deal with whatever mental anxiety he had. Using them to forget and to run away.

Run away.

Alex ran away once. The second he turned 18 years old he was out the door and ready to leave. After saving up almost every single sent from working from the age of 16 he needed to leave Texas. He needed to leave the house that he shared with his family. To get away from his father. He didn’t see it is running away. He saw it is getting it to live his life. But in leaving, he abandoned his brother, abandoned his sister. And all of those feelings have come to ahead in their argument. He was certain Dylan heard them yelling back-and-forth. But he didn’t come out, he didn’t come to speak to them or to make his feelings heard.

But the argument had pushed Alex over the edge. He felt like Charlie had been blaming him. Like all of Diylans issues were his doing. So he grabbed his car keys and stormed out of the house speeding away. He needed time to think, time to cool down. As he drove further away a sick feeling into the pit of his stomach but he pushed through ignoring it. He came to a nearby park stopping getting out with a bottle of water needing to move around. He paced back-and-forth, his head hurting from being so angry. How dare Charlie say the things that? How dare she blame him? As much as he understood her worry for Dylan and wanting him to sort his life out blaming him wasn’t the way. Or so he thought. He needed to close his eyes and breathe deep, let all the anger go.

He was lost.

He had no clue what he was going to do. How he was going to change everything. His brother was in deep and Alex had no idea how to relate to him. How was he gonna get him out of this? How was he going to make sure his brother knew that he had so much more of his life to live?. Maybe he needed to be better, calmer, more understanding. His hands drifted up to his hair as he ran them through looking up to the sky. He needed to breathe and calm himself down. His phone buzzed, he sighed and pulled it out from his pocket. It was Charlie. He answered it pulling it to his ear and straight away he knew something was wrong.

He couldn’t understand her. Charlie was crying and screaming. ”What? You need to calm down. I can’t hear..” He made out a few words. A chill went up his spine and he realised what was happening. Alex started to panic. ”Call 911! Charlie hang up and do it now!” Alex ran back towards his car, He unlock the door and got in. He started it up and had to get home as fast as he could. He sped down the street. He turned left, he came to a screech the ambulance was already there. Alex pushed the car door open rushing into the house. ”Charlie?. Charlie?” He pushes his way down the hallway and up the stares towards the bathroom.

Paramedics were moving Dylan out. He wasn’t moving, one of them using a pump as the others carried him, Alex moved into a door frame so they could get by. Charlie stepped out, tears streaming down her face. ”He...he wasn’t moving. He wasn’t breathing. I tried..I couldn’t.” She was shaking, she could barely keep herself together. Alex swallowed hard and reached out wrapping his arms around Charlie. She squeezed him tight and Alex shook his head. He had bonuses what to say. He was still lost.

”Come on, we have to get to the hospital…

. He tried to seem like he was strong. He tried to seem like he knew what was going to happen and that he was confident. But right now Alex was terrified. He wanted to be strong for his sister, he wanted to be strong because he thought it would fool himself into believing that Dylan was going to be fine. But now all we could think about was Dylan being carried past, his eyes were open. And there was nothing there. But now Alex had to lie, had to lie to himself and lie to his sister. Because he had no other choice

Are you happy now?

He was angry and frustrated. Who wouldn’t be? Alex Jones has spent the last 18 years working on being the best of the best. Priding himself when he won a championship that the person who beat him would earn it. That they would have to fight tooth and nail to get that championship off of him. But now, he was. His first match after losing the sin city wrestling world championship. And he honestly had no idea what to do. This is the first time ever happened, the first time he lost a championship this fast. And it made him sick to his fucking stomach.

” so, I bet you are all very happy right now aren’t you? So many of you are grinning ear to ear, laughing at my expense. Because 14 days is all I could do to hold onto that championship. 14 days where I got to call myself the best in this goddamn company. And then I came face to face with Jack Washington. Jack beat me, I have never once said that he didn’t, I never tried to take away from his victory. But, as time has gone on I’ve just gotten angry and angry about this entire situation. A kid, who is batting just over 50% was able to get in the ring with me at violent conduct and beat me. He didn’t earn that championship match, I earned mine because I just came off a successful run as a champion, I have a history of being the best. “

“10 world championships. 10 of them. Countless other championships, wins over some of the best names in this business. I have earned the right to go after any championship I choose. But Jack Washington? He was a cocky little shit who got lucky you’re gonna spend Jordan. He shouldn’t of even come close to beating Ben Jordan. But because he put in one good performance and Ben seems to struggle with the kid he ends up being able to write a cheque and faced me at one of the biggest shows of the year.”

“And now, instead of having a respected legend as you’re well champion you have this cocky arrogant little shit, this little parrot who if you didn’t say anything about him he had nothing to say because he can’t come up with an original thought. Someone who would rather dredge up someone’s dead past and lie about it and actually do anything of note.“

“Congratulations Sin city wrestling, you don’t deserve me as your world champion. You don’t deserve me as one of your best competitors. And I’m no longer going to fight to make sure this company is taken seriously because now? Now I’m going to get in that rain and I’m gonna beat the hell out of anyone you put me in there with, and I’m gonna do it to expose you. Mark Ward, Christian Underwood… You are both going to run out of challenges for me. And whether Austin or I end up earning our way back to that world championship..Wolfslair will rise again.”

Alex smiles, dressed in a well fitting black suit. He unbuttons the jacket opening it up putting it to the site before adjusting the tie.

”But my my, what an amazing event we have lined up. Our Halloween special, where all the matches have spooky stipulations. Just in case any of you don’t realise this, I am a 36-year-old-man. Not a child. I don’t care what kind of stipulation gets put on this match. I’m more interested in my opponents. One of them is a giant, A well put together mad man who seems to have an affinity for certain Victorian era serial killer. The other one, is the whipping boy of sin city wrestling. Interesting match. At least it would be interesting if it was just Caleb versus Jack one on one. But this is the first match you have me and after losing the world championship? Is this a joke?”

“Are you people trying to drive me insane? Maybe you think treating me like this is going to get me to quit this company. I know that’s what the majority of you want. I know you want me gone. Do you think with me gone then maybe the dominos will fall and suddenly Austin, Alicia and Johanna will be easier to handle? Face it. Wolfslair is the measuring stick. We hold championships, they matter. We lose them...they fade…”

“But now, well now your former world champion is in a match with two people who aren’t fit to tie my boots.”

“Jack is someone who is rarely seen in sin city. He’s not a regular here, he doesn’t deal with the week in week out running of this company. Why is he in a match with me? How did he earn the right to share the ring with a god?. Last time anyone remembers seeing him in the ring was against Austin. Everyone wondered, can Austin go against someone who is just as big as him? Austin beat him like he was nothing. And now he is being put in a match against myself and Caleb storms? Jack, I don’t care if you’re 6’8 and 278 pounds. That just means you’re a big, strong, inept moron. And I’m going to enjoy making an example out of you.”

Alex shrugs and lost him self before pushing up to his feet and adjusting his suit and tie.

”But then, there’s Caleb Storms. It’s funny but I just got done talking about how the last time we saw Jack he was being beaten up by Austin. And the last time we saw you Caleb, what happened? It’s almost like I’m facing the ghosts of Austin’s past. But Caleb you are a very special case. While Jack is used sparingly in this company and at least looks intimidating you seem to be always in sin city wrestling’s business. Week after week you get booked, you turn up. And fail. It really is incredibly endearing Caleb. Some people would say it’s worthy of respect and part of me does. Part of me respect you for having the kind of grind and heart to turn up week after week knowing that you aren’t actually one of the best in this company but willing to try and get better and try to improve.”

“With that being said Caleb the way you try and improve doesn’t work. You try and improve by turning up and sounding more confident every single week and in the end when you do inevitably fail instead of growing and getting better, admitting your faults, you stick your head in the sand like some kind of weird arrogant ostrich. I mean shit, before your match with Austin you started talking about how the Internet title rain would’ve ended against you, when he already destroyed you defending that title against you. You went on a weird tangent about putting in 120% effort.“

“Mathematically impossible by the way but also extremely redundant“

“At this point no one really gets anything from beating you Caleb. You don’t get a reputation boost, you don’t get a boost in the rankings here in sin city wrestling. In fact, what most people get when they beat you, is a sense of dread and sadness. They feel sad because they have beaten someone like you who should be so used to loss at the moment we should call you the New York jets. And I’m not going to coddle  you Caleb, I’m not going to go easy on you. Instead Jack and you are going to know what it’s like to feel the wrath of a disgruntled world champion.”

Sibling Rivalry
Dallas Texas

“Come on kid”. Alex laughed and moved to the side as his younger brother went for a double leg but slid across the canvas. Alex laughed as Dylan slammed his fist on the mat. At 15 Dylan was bigger than a lot of his friends but still smaller than Alex. He was athletic and wanted to try his hand at wrestling. They had got permission from their mother. After much begging from Dylan and kind words from Charlie, now 18 and Alex. now 22 convinced her to let Alex train Dylan at a local gym.

Alex moved around Dylan and as Dylan again ducked down he grabbed a leg, this time Alex quickly bent down wrapping his arms around his baby brother's midsection squeezing before lifting Dylan up and slamming him down. Alex then spun around Dylan's back and took him around and over locking in a rear naked choke. Dylan struggled and moved, he tilted his chin and grabbed Alex’s arm pulling back and away from his neck, turning around to gain the upperhand. Charlie looked up with a proud grin at ringside, nodding at Dylan.

“Not bad….” Alex laughed as Dylan smiled not realising Alex had wrist control. He looked down too late. Alex turned his hips pulling Dylan around wrapping his arm and his legs straightening into an armbar pushing his younger brother down. Alex straightened his back and pushed up. Dylan screamed in pain. “Tap DJ….” There was nothing Alex rolled his eyes and pulled harder causing Dylan again to cry out.

“TAP DYLAN” Charlie screamed and slammed her hand on the mat.

“No….” Dylan yelled and Alex sighed, pulling once more cracking his elbow before letting go, Dylan yelled in pain again and stayed on his knees holding his arm as Alex rolled over his shoulder to his feet, he paced back and forth shaking his head.

“If this was a match I would have fucking taken your arm off DJ…” Dylan smirked and gave him a small nod before sitting back looking over at Charlie who just sighed deeply.

“I ain’t a quitter Alex.” Alex stopped mid step. Charlie rolled her eyes and mumbled under her breath, Alex turned and slapped his brother across the face.

“Don’t be an idiot. You know what pride gets you in this?. Broken bones and time off…” He scoffs and throws his arms in the air as Dylan slowly wiped the blood from his lip. “There isn’t shame in knowing you got beat by someone better. You learn, take it in and never make the same mistake again.” Dylan nods slowly and slides from the ring, Alex turns to Charlie and slides through the ropes with a deep sigh. Alex looks at his phone as Charlie keeps an eye on their baby brother scowling as a few of his “friends” approach

“We need to do something about that…” Alex made a grunting noise and looked up for a moment putting his phone away,

“They’re just his friends Charlie….I’m not dad I can’t tell him who he can and can’t see…” He looked back at the screen, Charlie grabbed Alex by the face turning his head towards the entrance just in time for Alex to see it, Dylan shaking a friend's hand and a small bag being passed between them.

“Yeah...we have to do something about that...and soon…”

A few days later

Alex took a long drawn out breath, his hands on his hips as he looked his younger brother’s door up and down. Wondering if he should just walk in, or if he should knock. Alex holds his hand up, before lightly knocking. After a few moments the door opened. Dylan went and gave a small smirk. He looked tired. Alex noticed, he noticed the bags under his eyes, he noticed his brother's pale complexion.

“Hey D, got a minute?” Dylan gave a small nod and moved to the side so his brother could walk in. Dylan moved over to his bed sitting on the end grabbing his can of soda drinking it down and then burping “charming…” Alex laughed, Dylan just smiled and sat back as Alex looked around his room. Out of the corner of his eye Alex saw pill bottles under Dillans bed he swallowed hard as his heart sank, he knows what is going on but how can he bring it up to Dylan?

“We missed you at training today.” It had been true, a lot of the other trainees asked where Dylan was. Both Charlie and Alex could not give a straight answer. The truth was that they weren’t sure. Alex had yelled to Dylan early in the morning, asking him if he was awake. Dylan said he was in that he was going to be at the gym later.

But as the time ticked by in the morning going into the afternoon, there was no Dylan. Alex and Charlie were worried. They came home, hearing the music coming from Dylan's room. Charlie begged Alex to go and talk to him Alex wanted to ignore it but instead gave in. “Yeah sorry. I felt sick.” It was a bullshit excuse. And Alex knew it. He moved around Dylan's room, his foot touching an empty pill bottle. Alex turns sideways moving his foot to the side to kick the pill bottle out from under the bed as if my accident.

Alex looked down, Dylan did to his face twisting. Alex leaned down picking up the pill bottle turning it towards his brother. “What the hell Dylan?”

There was an awkward silence, Alex took his head and Dylan slid to the edge of the bed getting to his feet. He grabbed the pill bottle and turned, throwing it in the bin. “Must have been left here by a friend.” Alex took a deep sharp breath in his eyes focusing on his brother. He knows he’s lying, he can feel it, he can see it. Alex takes a small step back and folds his arms over his chest.

“You think I’m that dumb?” Dylan lockdown. Alex has nostrils flared, he could feel the anger rising even higher into his chest. His voice rising to almost a yell. “You don’t think I can see what is going on here? You pulling away from us, becoming withdrawn, looking the way you do. Dylan Charlie and I aren’t  dumb we know what’s going on.”

“And why do you care?” Dylan finally looked up  at Alex, his anger matched by Dylan’s. He got to his feet and stood right in Alex‘s face. Dylan only a few inches shorter than his older brother. “You walked out on us Alex, and then you come back in and think that everything is just going to be fine?. Stay out of my life unless I ask you to. Stay out of my business.“

Dylan moved over to his bedroom door, he opened it and looked through it signalling he wanted Alex to leave. Alex shook his head, his hands balled up into fists. He wanted to smack his brother as hard as he could. He wanted to make sure Dylan knew that this was stupid. But, Alex also knew it would push him away. He moved towards the door and out into the hallway hearing his brother's door shut behind him. He moved over towards the stairs getting ready to go down wondering just what he was going to tell Charlie.

This was bad, and it was only gonna get worse.

Trust issues.

The screen comes alive, we focus on the Sin city wrestling world Heavyweight championship. The gold nameplate at the bottom clearly reads Alex Jones. It sits over his shoulder, his right arm wrapped around it holding onto the main plate has his head tilted to the side with a smile on his face

“Well here we go. My first match as the world champion. The first time I’m stepping back in the ring as a champion with the gold. I know it will be something that all of you will remember forever.“

Alex has his hair tied back in a bun. Dressed in a black suit as we have seen him lately. We noticed that he is standing in the main room of the wolfslair training facility. Other members of the gym and stable around him training. But Alex just smiles and stares directly at the camera

“When the champion gets in the ring, it is an event, it’s an occasion, it’s not just a simple wrestling match it is the wrestling match. Even if I do have to carry two inept partners with me against a team of people who shouldn’t even be able to touch me in the confines of a professional wrestling match. I have to team with the other two singles male champions in this company. And I’m sure some of you are questioning why that would be a problem, after all they are like me they whole championships..”

“But you do realise, not all champions are created equal. I am the world champion, the best of the best. I walk down into that ring a few weeks after losing the mixed tag team championships, a few weeks after feeling the weight of propping up that goddamn division has been lifted off my shoulders.“

“And I once again, for the 10th time in my career, for the first time in this company, became the man”

“And II told you all it was going to happen. When I lost the mixed tag team championships, I told the world that this was going to free me up to go after the world title. That I was done standing in the background and wedding my friends, my students, stand in the spotlight. It was my time, my turn. And people laughed. They said that I was over the hill, that my time to be a world champion has passed.

“An apparent irrelevant has-been, at 35 years old.“

Alex couldn’t help but laugh. He looked down into the side holding the title tighter to his chest, an arrogant glint in his eye as he cracked his neck and looked around at all of his friends.

“I suppose I showed everyone didn’t I?. So not only did I become the champion, it seems like I broke Griffin Hawkins. I meant what I said, I like Griffin as a person I thought he and I were friends. And as a friend I will always be honest with people, I won’t sugarcoat things, I won’t lie. See I was a real friend to Griffin Hawkins. I told him he wasn’t world champion material, I told him what he needed to do to become world champion material, and he didn’t listen. So when I did get in the ring with him I forced him to listen, I tried to teach him a lesson and then instead of him listening to my lesson, and learning from me, he walked away. Proving my point.”

“And now I will be gracing the ring For the first time since winning this title!  And I know there are some people, my detractors, who say that I have not been a fighting champion. Because I haven’t been challenging people left or right. The truth is? As the champion people need to be coming for you. They need to be hungry for this championship. If someone challenges me, and I think the third the shot. I’ll put the belt on the line. But nobody has, even Jack Washington has just rambled on with the same things he’s been saying for weeks. And at violent conduct he will get his shot “

“Before that, we have a six-man tag team match to get through.“

“As a rule, I really only team with people I trust. I trust Austin, I trust Alicia, I trust Johanna. I don’t trust Teddy or O’Malley. Teddy Warren-Steele Fluked his way 20 Internet title shot, and he was able to pull another four leaf clover out of his ass and beat Vinnie.  Trust me, I will have plenty of things to say about Vinnie later on. But Teddy should not of been him. Teddy got lucky. That joke of a human being should not be a champion, he should be opening the show getting the shit kicked out of him by the latest star that sin city wants to have as a champion contender.”

“But this week I have to carry Teddy to win kicking and screaming.”

“O’Malley on the other hand, I don’t have to carry him. People underestimate him. But he’s clearly been able to win championships. Doing it both here and in sin city underground. The only problem I see with O’Malley, is that his ego is larger than his talent. And yes you are a talented professional wrestler O’Malley. But your ego, it’s okay to have an ego if you can back it up. And you seem to have trouble in that situation. Do you think I have a god complex?. No, I just know I’m good and I know I can back it up”

“I’ve done it my entire career. And I’m going to keep doing it while I drag both of you to win.“

Alex laughs to himself again, he moves along the main floor of the gym away from the practice rings and maths. Over to his office where he turns and leans against the door following his arms over his chest.

“And on the opposite side of the ring, We have a team of Contenders. We have Milo Kaaey, señor Vinnie, and Jack Washington. The only thing more pathetic than the two douche bags I have to team with, is the three douche bags on the outside the ring. Milo Casey was supposed to face Austin in a match, that match never happened yet Milo is still a contender. He’s going to go on and face O’Malley. Admittedly it’s for a championship that no one should really give two shits about, a championship that needs a gimmick to be relevant.”

“Miles, and I’m going to call you Miles from now on, because Milo sounds like the name you give one of those annoying little pugs that can’t breathe properly that has the tongue hanging out the side of their mouth and likes to run into brick walls. You may believe you can hang with the best of the best. But, on a team full of weak links that seem to be coming apart at the seams, you are the weakest. See, Jack Washington at least has a future in this business, he looks put together and he’s already proved he can stand up with the best in what he did against Ben Jordan.”

“Vinnie has had success. But you? You have exploded onto the scene, but not in a way that is going to actually make a difference. You are someone who will be looked at as a flash in the pan, and O’Malley is going to steamroll over you.”

Alex shrugs, his assessment based on over a decade of in ring activity and seeing people come and go in different promotions and the business.

“Now, don’t get excited Vincent. I know the fact that I just said you had success is probably made you jump up and down and try and give Cactus Pete a hug, or maybe you felt a nice little flattering of butterflies down in the base of your stomach that got you all nice and excited enough to jump on top of your fat wife.”

“But I was using success in a relative term. You have been somewhat successful in sin city. It took you many times to actually become the world champion but you did, you beat Austin one on one. Then you did it again to take the Internet championship. And while your world title run was good, It was stuck in an era where we have had dominant champions. Fenris, Austin and Ben. I don’t happen to agree with Austin’s assessment about your world championship reign. If it had happened at any other time, it would be looked at as amazing. But your Internet reign on the other hand.”

“You won the title, and then you rolled over on your back and played dead for three seconds for Teddy like your name is Kate. Not the best look Vinnie…”

“I’ll give you credit though, You got right back on that horse, going after the Internet Championship. And to be honest, you are better than Teddy and you deserve that championship more than he does. So good luck, but I’m still gonna be going as hard as I can’t win this match. Because I hate losing.”

Alex raises his eyebrows, it’s a pretty normal statement and something that encompasses most of what Alex has done in his career

“But, what people should be most excited about is this is the first time Jack Washington and I will be competing in anything that actually matters. He’ll be standing over the other side of the ring from the ready to get his hands on me and actually see what all the fuss is about. But what you need to remember Jack, I am the champion. And I’ve done it nine times before this one. You have not climbed the mountain. You don’t know what it’s like. So, I’m sure you believe your comments about me being irrelevant hurt me or got in my head or made me angry…”

“Oh sweet summer child.”

“The steroids have gone to your head.”

“I’ve heard comments like that for years. From people like Kaden Kessler. Where is he now? And Dinn Whelan, gosh where did he go?. From Kevin Hunter, he up and disappeared…..”

“Meanwhile, I’m standing in a gym I own, surrounded by friends, students, training partners and family that are champions or have been champions, holding the world title of one of the best companies in the world and you...you think off hand childish comments like yours are going to put me off my game or get in my head?”

“To steal from fight club. I am Jacks sense of disappointed and latent potential….”

“You are a great talent Jack. I’m not saying you aren’t. I’m not even saying you won’t be world champion someday. But if you keep down this line of thinking...then I’ve already won. But on climax control we will both have to compensate for lacklustre partners. But….they have me….”

“And you have Miles kasey”

Alex can’t help but laugh before shaking his head and walking off screen.

Climax Control Archives / Loss

Not what you thought…

”Losing someone isn’t the end..”

Atlanta Georgia. Not one of Alexs’ favorite places. It was a hot August day, Alex had his arms folded over his chest, decked out in a suit. He undid the buttons on the jacket letting it sit open. His long hair was tied back, his beard was neatly trimmed. His hands slid into his pockets as he looked down. Alicia Lukas gave a small nod, her long blond hair tied back and away from her face, her make up looking immaculate, she wore a black dress and slowly folded her arms over her chest.

She looked forlorn, a long deep breath passing her lips as she stared out at the crowded room. It was 2018, the room was full of people in black clothes. Alicia’s siblings moved around the room talking to people, her brother Josh towered over all of them, being six foot ten, mhis long hair was also tied back, Her sister Zoey wiped away a tear as she chatted away to family members. A large casket sat down the end of the hallway in another room, the top open. It was a wake. A wake for Alicia’s father Jason

Alicia cleared her throat looking over at Alex. ”I know. I know it isn’t the end. It’s just. He was always gone, I never really knew him.”

Her voice faded, Josh seemed the most distant. Zoey cried, Alicia felt guilt. But Josh, he stood in a room full of people and had to pretend to care. It all seemed very familiar. ”I met him once…” Alex sighed and looked over at Alicia who raised an eyebrow, she seemed to be confused. ”Your dad. I met him when I first broke in.” Alex smirked and shook his head before stepping around in front of Alicia to distract her from all the guests who looked over at her making her feel uncomfortable.

”I was at a spot show in Texas. It was small, maybe 200 people…” His voice trailed off, he shook his head thinking back, it was around that time Alex had his own problems, his own loss. But he continued. ”Your dad was there to sign some autographs, he was different than I remembered, his hair had started to go grey, not blond, he did a run in...powerbombed a guy...he was a professional..”

Alicia gave a small nod and cleared her throat. ”Wrestling was all he really felt right in, he wasn’t a good husband or father...he didn’t know how.” Alex put his hand up onto Alicia’s shoulder and smiled weakly.

”He was proud of you. Not just for what you did in the ring, but the woman you have become….Violet.” Alex never used her name, not her real name. Alicia choked up and sighed, she didn’t want to cry, she hadn’t cried. She buried it deep down and she had to be the strong one, for her sister and for her boys who lost their grandfather. Alex Stepped forward wrapping his arm around Alicia. ”You’ll be ok kid...you’ll be ok” His mind faded away, into the past….

July 2007 Dallas Texas. The sun beat down. The heat was high but low humidity as a warm summer breeze moves through the trees and across the grass. Cars kept pulling up to the small house and people dressed in black slowly shuffled into the house past an older woman, her face covered with a black veil as they all stopped to offer words of sympathy. Drowned out by the gravity of the situation. A tall blond woman sat next to the older one, Her hands in her lap as she stared forward.

Sitting alone to the side, his legs up and crossed on a white painted beam is Alex Jones. Much younger than we see him now. No beard or color in his hair. It sits tied back out of his fresh boyish face, his upper body slender and undefined hidden under a black suit with a white shirt and a black tie. He lifts a beer to his lips sipping it with a shake of the head, The blonde looks over and sighs deeply. Alex turns and looks out onto the street as more seem to be coming, a boy much younger than him but looking oddly similar stands with a few older people, they all talk to him, offer words of kindness and support.

He didn’t even hear her footsteps, her voice cutting through the haze. “I know it’s a wake but would it kill you to look like you cared about Dad?” Charlene “Charlie” Jones, Alex’s younger sister stood next to him. She was physically big for her age, at 15 she stood 5’9, only slightly shorter than her older brother, athletically gifted with a kind face and bright blue eyes much like his own.

Alex sat there taking another sip of beer, a sigh coming after the mouthful. “It seems like when you die your sins are absolved and everyone seems to forget what a royal asshole you were….”

The words spit like venom, anger, and frustration behind them as he noticed the young boy crying. Dylan Jones, or DJ. he was 13, he wiped his eyes turning from the group of relatives and well-wishers, no one noticed the tears. No one except Alex and Charlie. “He’s not taking it well Alex.” He scoffed and shook his head. His mind drifting to another place he’d rather be, far away from all the mess he’d left behind.

A place with a certain pale girl with long black hair and a mean look in her eye that seemed to disappear when Alex smiled. “And what do you want me to do Charlie?. The old man is gone, nothing will bring him back and honestly...I wouldn’t want him here anyway….” Alex shook his head again kicking his legs off the banister, a few small white paint chips fell to the floor and Alex turned to his sister.

“He wasn’t the same man, he changed. He knew the mistakes he made and he-”

”STOP!” It was said louder than Alex had intended, it rang out through the house and out onto the porch. The older woman obviously their mother looked up shocked. Alex sighed and turned away taking another sip of his beer.

Charlie shook her head and looked at it.“Continuing the family legacy I see…” Alex ground his teeth together and looked down and away, his hand gripping the glass bottle as he noticed Dylan, his younger brother's eyes staring a hole right through him.  “He never forgave you for leaving.” Alex shook his head and finished the beer throwing the bottle down into the trashcan on the ground below the patio.

“Yeah, the old man told me not to come back, remember?” Alex’s mind flashed back to that night, the sound of the glass bottle breaking in the small trash can taking him back to that moment, the small scar on his cheek burning with the memory or glass shattering off the wall and hitting his face.

“No Alex...not Dad…” Her head moved slightly motioning back down to Dylan who had now looked away and focused elsewhere.

Alex sighed again and swallowed hard. “You’re putting all this on me?. I don’t need this…” Alex pushed up and away making his way into the house as Charlie followed.

Alex made it to his old room but before he could close the door Charlie stepped in. “I didn’t say we were done” Her voice was low and filled with hate. Alex raised an eyebrow and stepped back surprised. “You don’t get it, when you walked out you weren’t just getting away from Dad you walked out on us...me... mom...Dyl….You left us, Alex, you stood there and took the abuse and even though Dad stopped drinking last year, how do you think it was before that?” Charlie snarled, her eyes filling with tears, her hands shaking along with her voice and breathing. “Who do you think he took his abuse out on?. It wasn’t mom, it wasn’t me….he needs you, Alex….” He looked down and balled his hands into fists, his stomach aching as his heart seemed to drop into it. He swallowed hard and again his mind flashed back to her.

“You don’t understand, I have...I have a life, Charlie.” His sister shook her head and stepped forward taking his hands in hers.

“It’s family, our family. Our brother, mom, me. We need you….what do you have there?...a job?..friends?...a girl?...” Alex twitched, Charlie scoffed knowing the answer with a sigh. “No piece of ass is worth abandoning your family, if it was meant to be you’ll be together someday. But right now...right now your place is here…” She calmed herself and gave him a kiss on the cheek turning to leave. Alex sat on his old bed, his hands under his chin.

“...Fuck…”

Griffin Hunting

”Well, didn’t take long did it?”

It’s definitely the voice of Alex Jones. But not as clear as it would usually be. Alex steps forward, his long hair is wet and hanging down. His eyes burn and shine with a fire he hasn’t had in months. His arms fold over his chest, around him is dark as a light comes from above. Alex's face is covered by a mask, black with a wolf's snarling mouth on it over his own.

”Shhh, shhh can you hear it?”

His eyes trail up and to the side, he unfolds his arms and his right hand raises, a few fingers sliding his hair behind his ear before moving to his earlobe pushing it forward, Alex stays silent for a few seconds, we don’t hear anything until Alex chuckles and folds his arms again.

”It’s the sound of people whining and complaining. Complaining about my position in Sin City Wrestling. Complaining that I have a title shot, complaining that I am in another main event. Complaining, complaining, complaining. That is all most of you do. O/Malley and his bitch are constantly complaining. A man I have respect for in Fenris complains despite the fact he took his ball and went home. But, if any of you have an issue. Let me explain a few things to you. Look at the mixed tag division. Arguably the best two teams to step into the ring in that division are London Underground and Team Eggplant. Team Eggplant are made up of two wrestlers who haven’t done shit as singles stars.”

“I’m sorry Lach, Si, but it’s true. The mixed tag division goes through stages of being competitive and relevant. Johanna needed a starting off point. So I stood next to her to help her career, but also to boost that division. Because a name like me, a star like me, it boosts the prestige of those titles. I mean, Malachi and Bella are going to be good champions, but they have to face Mikah and Kris Ryans, two of the most decorated professional wrestlers in SCW and that is just going to make those titles mean even more. For name value. I have been here, in this company working my ass off just like everyone else for months and I am also a bonafide legend of this business. So for anyone to have a bitch about me getting a championship match?...”

“Kiss my ass..”

“For years now I have been in this company. I didn’t have to, I could have just sat back and lived my life with what I have already done. I have enough money to retire on, I invested well, I saved, I’m not stupid. So this for me, it was never a money thing. I didn’t need SCW, SCW needed me. When the merger happened SCW got the ones that had already been in both companies, but without me, there would be no Austin, there would be no Alicia. Neither of them would have signed their contracts. They would have gone somewhere else.”

“I made it happen, I ushered in this new golden age.”

Alex tilts his head. In his mind he’s right. In his mind he started this. Wolfslair was his dream, his future. He had been over wrestling. He wanted to retire, to sit back and enjoy life. But the lure of the ring and glory was too much. That and the need to be the best of the best. It was an addiction.

”And, did I get a thank you? No, no i didn’t. See, I stepped forward and did my best and in the end I got involved in the title picture, a picture that at the time I wasn’t as invested in as I should have been. It was all about Austin. It was all about Alicia. Those two kids needed to take the brass rings. And not only did they reach up and grab them, they took them down and made them their own. I came in when I was needed, I won some matches, lost others, but the entire time I was still one of the best in the world and I never asked for ore demanded ANYTHING. I didn’t ask for a roulette title match, I didn’t ask for a mixed tag title match the second Johanna and I teamed, I didn’t even ask for this title opportunity..”

“I asked to be considered, I made it known I wanted a shot, I made it known I would work my way up to one but SCW, they didn’t see it that way. Mark and Christian are smart, Mark and Christian reward people who show how good they can be. Atleast thats what I thought till I saw how SCW are marketing this….See.Jesse Salco, Caleb Storms, Bill Barnhart, Vinnie, Crystal, they all sit around and demand title shots but I prefer to go out there and earn them…”

“But, my name. My name earned me this. My sacrifices earned me this and here we are a few days away from Climax Control 277 and what really pisses me off, what really gets under my skin is that I’m obviously being used. See, while the romantic side of this match is me getting the shot to begin with and people complaining, the real narrative that the company iosd pushing forward with is I’m the first “threat” and that I called Griffin out on his way to the next supercard and to Jack Washington…”

“Are you kidding me?.”

“I called out Griffin, I called him out and I said I would EARN my way to him, but SCW put me in this match two weeks after he beat Ben. And why?. Why would they do that? Why would they have Griffin Hawkins vs Alex Jones and then remind everyone Jack Washington ran his mouth? Because, they think since Griffin Hawkins won against me before, Griffin can beat me again, get a win under his belt and go on to the next supercard to face the golden boy….right?”

He scoffs, rolling his eyes. His anger and frustration boiling over. He steps back and forth, the light from above still on him with nothing around. Nothing to distract you or take your focus off of Alex. He is the focal point. Get it? Metaphors!

”If you think, for one damn second that I won’t get off on destroying SCW’s plans and forcing them to change everything, then you don’t know me at all. See, I am all about being the variable, the intangible, the pain in the ass. That is all me. I have stood back, deliberately, I have watched others go on to be champions and I have done it with a smile on my face like a proud father watching his kids go to school for the first time, but now it’s MY time. Now it’s MY narrative. This is about Alex Jones winning his tenth world title, and yes, I am still searching for that. I have been winning other titles and tag titles and all that jazz but I am still on the hunt for number ten and if you think I’m not willing to destroy Griffin to get it?...well you’re dumb as shit…”

“Thing is, I like Griffin. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, he is a stand up guy. I like Griffin as a human being and he has a great taste in music and is respectful and works hard. And he has great hair. Hell, as a world champion he’s even pretty good. Pretty good, not great. I mean, we get it Griffin, you had this as a goal. You wanted this. The dream since you stepped into the company. So amazing, so poetic, so heartwarming. So generic. It’s all of us Griffin, even me. We all want to be the SCW world champion, if you don’t then you shouldn’t be in the company. Shit Caleb Storms and that moron Stephen Callaway want to be the damn world champion too.”

“But, you did it. You reached your dream and your goal. Congratulations. Really Griffin. You beat Ben Jordan, that is no easy thing to do, you beat me, you went on a great Roulette run. You’re a great wrestler Griffin. You’re a great athlete. But this, this is just business…”

“I want my damn tenth world title. I want my time in the spotlight and it is your job to stop me. It’s your job to step on MY dreams and to live yours. And the difference between us Hawkins is that you’ll smile, shake my hand and wish me luck, I’ll smile, shake your hand, and get ready to stab you right in the back and snatch that pretty gold belt off your shoulder or from around your waist. People like you win the big one, have that wonderful feel good moment in the sun and raise the title over your head, then don’t go on. Because you don’t have the killer instinct to do what needs to be done. You’re not like Fenris, Austin, Ben or me.”

“I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, I’m saying when push comes to shove, you don’t know when to pull the trigger Griffin…”

“The Internet and Roulette titles are different than that one. They are different in how you feel when you hold it. How you present yourself and what people will do to get it. You and I went to war for the Roulette title and in the end you won, you had your hand raised and I give you full credit for it. I’m not here to take that away from you or say it was some kind of fluke. On that night, Griffin Hawkins was better than Alex Jones.”

Alex slowly applauds and nods his head. It was a real admission. An admission of honesty but also failure. Something that has annoyed and burned in Alex's mind for months. He failed against Griffin, he watched Austin win two singles championships, he watched Alicia win the bombshells title twice, go on a hell of a run and become a star. It was his turn now…

”But, what now? I have spent months sitting in the mixed tag division, earning more defences than anyone else has. I have been watching others build themselves up and be looked at as better than me. I watched Austin lose to Vinnie, I watched you beat Ben. I’m done watching Griff. I’m done sitting on the sideline and I can change everything by getting in that ring and simply being the best. Las Vegas Nevada, Sam’s town...Climax Control...Alex Jones versus Griffin Hawkins...you had a hell of a run, you deserve what you got...but...I’m going to take it all away Griffin….”

Remember When

The coffee cup got placed on the table, his hard wood brown table sitting in the office of Wolfslair. Alex sighed and put his hands on either side of the cup, his head hanging down as he rolled it from side to side, his neck cracking and popping as he stretched the muscles. Other members of the gym filtered in, Aiden followed in behind Austin as the two had a laugh, Johanna was in the corner stretching out some of the younger trainees. Alexs’ sister Charlie worked one on one with Kallie Rezik.

Alex couldn’t help but smile. The business he had built, the gym where he could impart his knowledge on the next generation. Not that Alex was old. He had just turned 36, still in amazing shape, still in his prime. But the sun was starting to set. And Alex knew it. But this, this was his dream. His mind wandered back to the early days. Working with Elena DeDraca, working in England then back to America to teach his sister Charlie and their younger brother Dylan.

Dylan.

His heart sank. His biggest regret, his biggest failure. He saw the pain, he saw the frustration. But Alex was too wrapped up in his own shit to care. Too centered on himself to see Dylan's issues and problems. This is why he takes care of the trainees. Why they were his family. Alex looked up and stared out the small window watching them all. The current champions and stars of other companies. His backup in Sin City Wrestling. He kept smiling.

”Penny for your thoughts?” Sonya piped up, their son Dylan, sat on the floor playing with papers and crayons. She smiled and tilted her head sideways as she went over the finances. Alex just sighed and shrugged, shooting another smile at his wife. Sonya was in amazing shape, she could still get in the ring now if she wanted to. And before the pandemic. She did. Every few weeks Sonya would take an independent booking, get in there against a new star and enjoy herself.

But, her real value and job was in financial and legal matters. Alex loved Sonya with all his heart, they had the love of wrestling in common, but also had music and movies, common interests. She was the rock that kept him grounded and kind. ”Just assessing the situation…” Alex took a sip of his coffee, finishing it before throwing it into the wastebin next to his desk. Sonya moved around and looked out at everyone.

She smiled and put a hand on Alexs’ shoulder ”Time to rebuild them all?” He laughed and gave a small nod. Alex knew what she meant. Charlie was still a champion for Triumph, Aiden was one half of the Apex tag team champions. But, Austin, Johanna, Alicia and himself had all lost their matches, lost their titles and opportunities in SCW, It was a bitter pill to swallow.

”Kind of” His voice was low, his eyes moving around the room. His heart was full and heavy, but there was an anger there. Alex had not been the man he needed to be. Alex had not been the star he needed to be. ”I think it’s time to let the others go. Let them handle themselves. I can’t coddle them anymore. And I can’t hold myself back.” He laughed to himself, her hand moved down from his shoulder and arm to his hand, their wedding rings crossing over. Alex can’t help but smile again. Sonya kisses her husband on the cheek and nods slowly.

”Go get em tiger”

Dead mans hand

”We were so close”

Alex ground his teeth together. Obviously angry and disappointed. His arms folded over his chest as he looked up at the ceiling and back down again rolling his eyes around as he tried to think of a way to start this.

”When you have been at this as long as I have you tend to get used to a lot of things. You get used to the aches and pains you gather over the long weeks and months. You get used to being away from home, hotels, airports, cramped car rides. You get used to all of it.And if you’re lucky, you get used to the feeling of winning. Losing though, and especially losing titles, well that never feels normal. That never feels familiar. No matter how many times it’s happened and trust me on this…”

“I’ve lost a lot of championships.”

“Now, some people would look on the bright side of this and they would say “Hey Alex, you lost those titles but it also means you won them.”. And yeah, that’s true. You can always look at the positives in life but the dirty little secret is that you only really learn anything from the negatives. From the things that grate on your mind and make you feel like you learned something. I can learn more from a loss than a win and I have told my students that. I told Alicia that, I instilled that in her when I met her and it has taken her career to heights that so many others aspire to. And that is what I have done for so many….”

“But now, well now it’s time for me to take what I have learned, and move forward.”

He smirks and pushes to his feet from his sitting position on the floor.

” But before I can move forward to where I really need to be, I need to deal with the past. I need to reconcile myself with the fact that we lost the mixed tag team championships. I need to realise that losses not only happen but they also happen to people who nine times out of ten would not have beaten you. And as much as I like Malachi and Bella, and as much as I respect them, even though they have to admit that there was a hell of a lot of luck involved in that win. In fact I dare say there was more luck and skill. And, while part of me wants to avenge that loss and take back those championships, part of me does just want to move on. And that part of me has won out.”

“So, Bella Malachi enjoy those championships. I hope you do them proud just like we did. In setting the record for most offences, and coming close to setting the time record. But before I can really focus on where I want to be I have to also look at where I am now. And right now as all the promotional material, and as everyone will tell you, I’m at a strange crossroads in my career and my life.

“Alex Jones, nine time world champion, leader and owner of the gym and affection that has been dominant, but a man who has really stood on his own two feet in so long that some have started to wonder if I can. I’ve stood in the shadows and I’ve let the people that I hold dear, and I have trained, take the spotlight. And I’ve been fine with that, they’ve opened it, they deserved it, and they can stand on their own two feet and continue pushing their careers forward.”

“Meanwhile, I need to plant my feet, look my next opponent dead in the eye, and make them know, not just think, know that I was not only the better man on that night, but every night that we could ever possibly step in that ring.”

Alex's nostrils flare as he paces back and forth.

”And the man to feel that kind of disappointment, the man who will be stepping in the ring with me for my first singles match in months, is Stephen Callaway. A guy who has made it known that if he fails to win the sin city wrestling world title he is going to leave. And I get it, I get the feeling, I get that he wants something so bad that he’s willing to put his career in this company on the line. The only problem is while Callaway and I seem to be in a very similar position he doesn’t have the talent or the drive to be where he needs to be.”

“See, I willingly took a step back. I willingly let others step forward and be in the spotlight in front of me. Callaway has been scratching and clawing and trying to get himself into a position where he could challenge for the world title. And each turn each look down the corridor each match in the rain it’s just led him to the same disappointment time and time again. He is challenged for the roulette title, he challenged the unit title, and each time he’s been left holding nothing“

“He and I are even both trying to rebound off of losses. Am I worried about Callaway? Of course not. I’m not gonna take him lightly and let him get a cheap win over me because I was looking towards the future, but someone like him is never gonna beat someone like me. As hard as he tries, as much as he puts effort into every match and every single preparation. He still is not Alex Jones. He is the first step. The first step on the next road that I am gonna walk down. And it all begins with this climax control..”
