Title: Issue #37
Post by: Roxi Johnson on February 28, 2014, 10:33:35 PM
When the bell rang two weeks ago, it still hadn't sunk in.

When my music played, it still hadn't sunk in.

When the ref raised my hand, when I left the arena, when I entered my hotel room, on the plane home the next day...

Nothing.

Even when people were walking up to me, congratulating me on winning, I was oblivious.

Finally, two days ago, I realized it.

I'm in the second round. I had done what I set out to do. Step one was complete.

But, just as soon as it hit me, it quickly washed away. Now, it's set in what must be done. I mean, the past two weeks have been full of surprises. Returns, out of control action, and upsets. But as the old saying goes, if it’s not one thing, it’s another.
But for me, it’s another case of…”of course.”
Of course I’m teaming with Gothika’s boyfriend. It’s just my luck. Why wouldn’t that happen in this random tournament. What are the chances? But yet here it is. Adding to my misery. The woman who has been my brick wall, who has turned back all of my challenges, has a boyfriend and I’m teaming with him to get a shot at her again.

Oh, the irony.

So not only do I have to team with my enemies’ boyfriend, but now I have to face Odette Ryder and Steve Ramone in the second round.
Could I possibly get a more ridiculous road to the finals of the Blast from the Past tournament?

I get the heavy favorites in the first round, and now the returning Odette Ryder this round?

It figures doesn’t it?

[We open in a desert area, as the sun is almost down and there is a campfire burning. The Party Horde van is shown in the background, with its members show walking, talking, joking and laughing. Then, in the distance, Roxi appears walking towards the area. One of the members knocks on the RV door, and it opens to reveal Karina, with a bottle in her hand and a big smile on her face as she spots Roxi.]

Karina – Hey! You’re here!

[Karina begins walking down the RV steps as Roxi nervously waves at the group. Karina makes it over to Roxi, stumbling a few times before she gets there. She throws her arm around Roxi.]

Karina – I’m glad you made it out. We’ve been waiting for you.

[Roxi smiles nervously as Karina leads Roxi towards the Horde.]

Karina – For a little while, we didn’t think you were gonna show.

Roxi – I figured I’d try something new.

Karina – It’s good that you did. We love having you in the fold. Here.

[Karina hands Roxi the bottle she was drinking out of.]

Karina – Enjoy.

Roxi – What is this?

Karina – Only the best. The Kraken!

[Karina turns to Glory, who is seated by the boombox.]

Karina – Play the music!

[Glory turns the music on, and a tune that you would normally hear at a rave blares out of the speakers. Karina turns back to Roxi.]

Karina – I love this song.

[Karina starts to dance around as Roxi continues to study the bottle in her hand.]

Karina – Come on, just lighten up. You’re with friends here, the Party Horde is on your side!

[Roxi looks at Karina and she smiles a forced smile, but a little less, as she gets more comfortable with the horde.]

Roxi – I guess you’re right. What could it hurt, you know?

[Suddenly, from seemingly out of nowhere, Dee Jaa appears behind them. Dee takes the bottle from Roxi’s hand.]

Dee Jaa – Karina! She can’t have that!

[Startled, Roxi turns away from them.]

Karina – I figured it couldn’t hurt.

Roxi – Jeez! Where the heck did you come from?

Dee Jaa – I’ve been here for a while. Karina, you know she can’t have this stuff, she’s too important.

Karina – Yes, yes, I know. The future.

[Roxi turns to Karina.]

Roxi – You don’t actually believe  that do you?

Karina – What? She’s from the future? Not the craziest thing you’ve heard is it?

Roxi – Well, no. But still.

Karina – She’s been right about a lot of things.  It’s like she has Gray’s Sports Almanac or something.

Roxi – But…again, you don’t actually believe?

Karina – Well, get me drunk enough and I’ll believe anything. I’m pretty buzzed now.

Roxi – Fair enough.

Karina – She’s the one who lead us to you in the first place.

Roxi – Really?

Dee Jaa – Yes.

[Roxi is again startled as Dee gets closer.]

Roxi – Stop doing that!

Dee Jaa – You are important.

Roxi – And stop doing that! I’m not who you think I am.

Dee Jaa – Yes, you are. It’s why I’m here.

Karina – She says that a lot. How important you are. It is kind of weird you know. I mean, you and Argento DID beat Emma Rose and Giani. They were favored to win.

[Karina turns and takes the battle from Dee.]

Karina – You going to drink that? Don’t let it go to waste.

[Karina takes a swig of the bottle and begins to walk away.]

Roxi – You don’t think that means anything do you?

Karina – Well, it wasn’t me who did that. It was you.

[Karina walks away from Dee and Roxi.]

Dee Jaa – You are really important.

Roxi – Look, You think that two weeks ago meant anything, your crazy.

[Roxi pauses]

Roxi – Crazier than you look anyway.

Dee Jaa – I have to do this. It’s the only way.

Roxi – I’ve heard that enough. Karina, wait up. You got any of that booze left?

[Roxi begins to chase after Karina.]

Dee Jaa – No! You can’t!

Roxi – Why not? Why can’t I enjoy myself? What does it matter to you?

[Dee shrinks a little, taken aback from Roxi’s sternness.]

Dee Jaa- I’m sorry, I just can’t allow it.

Roxi – You’re not going to stop me from having a good time.

Dee Jaa – I’m not trying to stop you from having a good time. I’m trying to stop you from making the choice that could doom this world.

Roxi – Stop. Just stop. Things are different now. And they are different for a reason.

Dee Jaa – And that reason …

Roxi – That reason is the change I made. Now I have made this change because of what happened already. It’s time to stop being the way I was. This change, is for the better. Now leave. Me. Alone!

[Roxi turns and storms off, away from Dee, who just sighs and shakes her head. ]

What is they always say?

[Time passes and later in the night, most of the horde has either passed out, or just gone to sleep. But Roxi is still awake, staring at the bottle in front of her. This bottle is full and unopened. Roxi looks at it and contemplates what she’s about to do.]

Old habits die hard?

[ Roxi removes the wrapping around the bottle and tosses it away. She now stares at the open bottle before beginning to bring the bottle closer to her lips.]

They sure do.

[Roxi stops. Pauses, and looks around. Unsure of what to do, She brings it closer and then, sighs deeply, still in thought. Finally, she turns the bottle up
.
And dumps the bottle out on the ground, before getting up and walking away.]

They sure do.

Steve Ramone…

I vaguely remember hearing your name being called at one point. But really, it’s been a while and I have faith that Argento can beat you, since he at least has won a title. It may have been a short reign, but he has an accomplishment to his name. Steve Ramone does not, but this isn’t about you. It’s about your partner.

Odette Ryder.

First and foremost, welcome back.  I trust everything went well with your hiatus. But the questions, there are so many of them. The most glaring of all being...well, why? Why did you bother to come back? Why did you drag yourself away from you exile to return now? You told the world last week, it was because you missed this place. And it honestly sounded true. Maybe you have turned over a new leaf, maybe you did what you felt you had to do to make that change in your life. I saw Misty do it, and if that happened, if that was real, there’s no reason to believe that you wouldn’t or couldn’t do it either.

It seems that this was inevitable. Like fate playing a cruel joke. Of course you and I would meet in this tournament for the second year in a row. Of course I would have to deal with someone like you. I was, at one point, the great hero of SCW. I was the beacon of light, and all that was good, great, and heroic. I stood up for everyone, and played the knight in shining armor over and over and over again.  And like all heroes, sooner or later, they go down. They lose, fall hard. And the people wanted me to get up, so I did. But I fell, again and again. It was a harsh dose of reality. The hero can’t always win in the end. Not without people getting hurt, a sacrifice that shakes the core of a person.

But really, something else happened that really makes this entire situation more interesting to me. Certain things can just become cliché. Heroes always go through this journey and I was no different. You see, While I was on top, I lost something I should have had. I figured at one point that I could just dip back into it, slip it on like a glove. But when I needed it, it just wasn’t there…

It was the desire, the hunger to be a champion. Because I had the title. I had it all, and now, it’s all gone. Now, everything has come crashing down. I’ve become a cog in the machine. I’ve become passé. Like the cowboy making room for the space man. And you, Odette Ryder, are the spaceman.

You’re the old toy with a new moveable part, the old car with a new paint job.
You’re shiny. New. Sleek.

I saw your name across from mine a few days ago. And my only response was “Of course.” Of course because it makes so much sense. Odette Ryder comes back, and is triumphant as she seeks her redemption, and to ride into town and become the hero that saves the day. It seems my time has come and gone, if you ask anyone out there. Odette will do what I cannot. Odette will save the townspeople and all will be right with the world.

Let’s face it, you have all the momentum. If we’re being honest with ourselves, Argento and I pulled off a fluke victory, and now here we are. Once again, seemingly in life for the firing squad, to get rolled over by the new hot thing Odette Ryder and Steve Ramone.  You’ve come back to be my replacement. You’ve come back to be the hero I was.

They all love you again. Proof that no matter what you do or say in this business, no matter how much you give the fans grief, or tell them they are the reason you are going away, once you leave and come back, they will forget everything that happened.  But it’s obvious that the new shiny white knight is now without her demons is she?

It’s not a big secret you burned a lot of people Odette. You pushed a lot of buttons and rubbed people the wrong way. You insulted the Bombshell’s division and you wanted a challenge and someone to keep you around. Apparently you though so highly of yourself that you wanted someone to beat you. Just so you had something to do. And if memory serves me correctly, no one, not one person seemed to care whether or not you stayed or went.

No, I take that back, actually.  There was a person who did not want you to leave.

That was me.

Because of what I wanted from you. And what I wanted was to beat you. So the honest truth is I’m glad you are back, because I want to defeat you in the ring. It’s purely selfish, I’m aware of that, and I was the bombshell’s champion when you left, and well, I was handling challengers that SCW was putting in front of me, and I couldn’t actually take you up on that offer. And then you were gone, and I got nothing out of it. It seemed like a far-fetched idea that you would return after what happened, and I didn’t pay it any mind after a while. But now, you’re back. And now, it’s you and I, with our respective partners in this quarter final match. This was the finals last year, you and I. You obviously remember, because well, you won, you and Jordan Williams. But that was a different time.

Now, I will do what I must to complete this journey. Odette Ryder, you stand in front of me, and we have the proverbial Mexican standoff. It seems we are the gunslingers destined to draw and see who walks away. We have our scars, we have our demons, and they don’t go away no matter how hard we try. But there’s a big difference Odette. You can conquer your demons without winning this tournament.  I cannot. I have to win. Winning is the only way to complete my journey.

So when we have our showdown, when we are forced to draw down at high noon, I have to be quicker, faster, stronger and tougher. I will shoot you down Odette.

Because I have to.

It’s time…

Draw.

[It’s the next day, and Roxi is shown walking, and getting ready to enter a movie theatre. She walks up to the counter.]

Roxi – 1 for Robocop.

Cashier – That’ll be $11.50.

[Roxi plays her money and enters the theatre before purchasing her popcorn and drink. She enters the theatre and plops down, in the somewhat empty theatre, considering it’s a weekday afternoon. But it’s not long before. Dee appears in the row behind her.]

Dee Jaa – What are you doing?

[Roxi is again startled by Dee.]

Roxi – What is it with you?! Why won’t you leave me alone, just for a little while?!

Dee Jaa – I saw you.

Roxi – What? You saw me?

Dee Jaa – Yes.

Roxi – So? What are you talking about?

Dee Jaa – You didn’t drink that booze.

Roxi – That doesn’t mean anything.

Dee Jaa – I think you’re starting to believe.

Roxi – I…Whatever.

Dee Jaa – That’s a good sign.

Roxi – No, it’s nothing. Just like this whole thing. What do you think this is even about? You think that Argento and I beating Emma and Giani meant anything? It doesn’t lend any credibility to you. It was just…

Dee Jaa – Just what? You two were huge underdogs and you won.

Roxi – It was something that happened. It had nothing to do with you.

Dee Jaa – You and Argento, you know, the boyfriend of the woman you dislike the most?

Roxi – It just happened. I can’t explain it, but that’s what happened.

Dee Jaa – Maybe. Maybe not.

Roxi – Enough. What are you even doing here anyway?

Dee Jaa – What?

Roxi – What could I possibly do wrong in a movie theatre?

Dee Jaa – Because you have other things to do.

Roxi – What are you talking about? There’s nothing going on. I just want to relax and watch a movie.

Dee Jaa – Robocop?

Roxi – Yes…What about it?

[Dee gets up and begins to leave.]

Dee Jaa – You have other things to do. Things that require your attention.

Roxi – I just want to watch this movie…

[Dee turns back to Roxi]

Dee Jaa – Did you watch the original?

Roxi – Yes…

Dee Jaa – Then you’ve seen this movie. Trust me. Now come on.

Roxi – What are you talking about? Go where?

Dee Jaa – Home.

Odette, My problem has always been you. Or...someone like you. There's always been a you. Everywhere I've ever been, there's been a  you. Maybe a different name, different face, different height, weight...but it's still the same. Someone who tries to stand in my way. Someone who tries to tell me what I can and cannot do. Someone who tries to deny me. A roadblock on my path.

But like every other roadblock, I can and will overcome it. Odette, you cannot stop me now. I will not be denied. It's that simple. I have tried, and I have failed before. I have been knocked down by you.

But I will always get back up.

You have come at me with many different looks, many different styles, and I refused to back down any time you have stepped up. And now, now that I'm so close to the end of the journey, you have once again stepped into my path and tried to block it. Same story, different characters Odette.

But I will take you down Odette. I will put you down. I will overcome you, just as I have before.

You have been all those big bad boogeymen. You have cost me a lot of time and effort, but I've had time to waste before. I don't have it now. No more time can be wasted. You are that boss that takes forever, I no longer have time to waste with you. I'm just going to beat you.

No more Odette. Not now, not ever again.

Things are different now, and I won’t be denied on this journey.

I will overcome you.

[Roxi is shown back in her apartment, she looks around for Dee Jaa]

Roxi – Okay, You drag me out of a movie, and now you’re nowhere to be found.

[Roxi enters her bedroom, and sure enough, Dee is seated on her bed.]

Roxi – There you are. What…

[Dee turns and holds Roxi’s “Lady Bedlam” costume in her hands.]

Roxi – What are you doing?

Dee Jaa – Put this on.

Roxi – I don’t do that anymore.

Dee Jaa - …You have to.

Roxi – Why?

Dee Jaa – Because of what’s about to happen. We don’t have much time.

Roxi – Stop being vague. Explain yourself.

Dee Jaa – It will effect everything.

Roxi – That’s not my job anymore. I don’t need to play that role anymore.

Dee Jaa – You have to. This is one of the key events that will shape the future.

Roxi – Why should I believe any of this? That match two weeks ago is not proof of anything.

Dee Jaa – It was.

Roxi – Okay, what about this week? You think that Argento and I are going to beat Odette and Steve Ramone? She’s the golden girl now. Let her do what she needs to do.

Dee Jaa – It also plays a part.

Roxi – So what happens if we don’t win? What then?

Dee Jaa – It’s not the only event I need you for. At least it’s not as important as this.

[Roxi sighs and shrugs.]

Roxi - … Give me the stupid costume.

[Dee smiles as she tosses the costume to Roxi.]

Dee Jaa – I’ll meet you at 50th street and Grand.

[Roxi rolls her eyes and goes to put on the costume and when she turns back around to see Dee, but she’s gone. Roxi throws her hands up and heads out the window. But Dee is actually still in the room, as she walks out of the room and opens up a closet door, and there, sits a ticking bomb, with a countdown timer.]

[Roxi sits annoyed on the top of the roof at 50th and Grand. Dee appears behind her.]

Dee Jaa – Good, you’re here.

Roxi – Yeah. What is this about.

Dee Jaa – You’re about to see.

[Roxi watches as they overlook a corner store.]

Roxi – What am I supposed to be…

Dee Jaa – Shh… There.

[A young man, dons a ski mask and enters the store with a gun drawn.]

Roxi – Okay…

Dee Jaa – You have to stop him.

Roxi – I don’t have time for this. It’s a robbery. It happens. What makes this one so special?

Dee Jaa – This is the event that will change lives… You stop him, you save many lives.

Roxi – How do you know? He’s getting money. It’s wrong, I can see that, but this is not my concern anymore. I’m focused on me.

Dee Jaa – People will DIE because of this man. People important to the future.

Roxi - …

Dee Jaa – Please.

Roxi – No. I’m through with this.

[Roxi turns and starts walking away.]

Dee Jaa – I saw it with the booze, I know you know you have to do this. This is who you are. It’s who I know you are.

[Roxi turns back, clearly conflicted.]

Roxi -  …Ugh.

[Roxi turns and runs towards the edge of the roof and looks down as the guy tries to make his get away. Roxi swings off the roof and in true dare-devil style lands on the roof of the man’s car, forcing the guy to stop really fast. Roxi hops off the hood, walks to the driver’s side window and grabs her staff and breaks open the window and jabs the guy in the face. He’s out like a light. And Roxi walks away before heading back up on the roof. Dee is there waiting for her. Roxi looks at her with an annoyed look. Dee is smiling ear to ear.]

Roxi – Satisfied?

Dee Jaa – You have done well.

Roxi – Now leave me alone. I’m done with this.

Dee Jaa – Everything so far is going like it should.

Roxi – I’m so glad. I have a match coming up. I don’t need this anymore. Anything else I need to know about wise sage?

[Dee stops for a moment and pauses, she shrugs…]

Dee Jaa – No. Not for a while.

Roxi – You sure?

Dee Jaa – Yes.

Roxi – Good.
