Note: Meant to post this before I posted Miles but forgot....but figured it was time to do a little something from Kevin's POV and was inspired.
They are who they are...
Las Vegas Suburbs
Little over a week ago
Connor hooked a hand through the strap of Kevin's overnight bag and gave it a firm tug.
"C'mon," he laughed, "If they keep saying goodbye, we're gonna be thirty before they actually leave."
Kevin stumbled forward half a step before catching himself, shooting Connor an exaggerated glare, "They're not that bad."
Connor stopped halfway up the walkway and looked back toward the Jeep parked at the curb, "...Kev."
"What?"
"They're literally still watching."
Kevin turned and sure enough, Miles was still sitting behind the wheel with the driver's window down, one arm resting on the door. Carter had leaned against the passenger side, his hands buried inside the pocket of his hoodie as if pretending he wasn't doing exactly what he was doing which was watching.
The second Miles saw Kevin look back, he smiled and lifted his hand in a small wave, not a dramatic one, just enough to say, ‘Go on’. Carter pointed toward the front door before making a pair of exaggerated "move it along" motions with both hands.
Kevin rolled his eyes, "Dear Lord, they're impossible."
Connor grinned, "They're worried."
"I know."
The words came out softer than Kevin intended. Connor didn't make a joke this time, instead, he slung an arm across Kevin's shoulders for a second and steered him toward the porch, "They'll survive."
The front door swung open before either of them reached it.
"There you are," Connor's mum smiled, "I was beginning to think your chauffeurs had decided to move in."
Kevin laughed as he stepped inside, "They're not usually this bad."
Connor snorted, "Kevin...they spent five minutes saying goodbye."
"It wasn't five."
"It was absolutely five."
Connor's mum chuckled as she closed the door behind them, "I think they're just making sure you're settled."
Kevin glanced back through the window beside the door, the Jeep finally eased away from the curb but it didn't pull away quickly, it rolled, almost cautiously. Miles had probably checked every mirror before putting it in gear.
Kevin knew he had. He'd watched him do it all the way over, at every stoplight, every intersection and every parked car. Carter hadn't been much different. He'd spent half the drive looking out the passenger window, casually scanning sidewalks and parking lots while pretending he was just enjoying the view.
They thought they hid it well. They really didn't, not from him. Not anymore.
"You coming?" Connor called from down the hallway.
Kevin blinked, "...Yeah."
He followed Connor into the kitchen where the smell of fresh pizza practically filled the entire downstairs. Three boxes sat open across the table, pepperoni, meat lovers and extra-cheese.
Connor was already reaching for a slice before he'd even sat down, "Mom bought enough food to feed an army."
Connor's mum laughed as she grabbed three cans of pop from the refrigerator, "I bought enough because I know you."
"Fair."
She handed Kevin a Dr. Pepper before taking the seat across from him, "So..." she said with an easy smile, "How have things been?"
Kevin shrugged, "They've been...good."
"As good as they can be?"
He nodded, "Yeah."
She didn't press, she didn't ask about therapists that he knows Connor had said something about or sometimes his recurring nightmare. She didn’t ask about everything she'd politely danced around ever since she'd learned what he'd been through, instead she smiled, "I'm glad."
Connor folded a slice of pizza in half, "So..." He pointed at Kevin with it, "What's it actually like living with the world heavyweight champion?"
Kevin laughed, "You mean besides the ego?"
Connor grinned, "I knew it!"
"Oh, don't encourage him," Kevin chuckled, "He'll somehow hear you from fifteen minutes away. But no, Miles has this amazing ability to compartmentalize and remain the coolest head in the room. Not at all ego-driven..."
Connor's mum smiled, "And Carter?"
Kevin's smile grew without him realizing it, "Carter's..." He searched for the right word, "Loud."
Connor burst out laughing, "That tracks."
"He's loud, he makes terrible jokes, he sings along to songs even when he doesn't know the words, and he somehow convinces everybody else to join in."
"Sounds exhausting."
"It is." Kevin took another bite of pizza before adding with a grin, "...But the house would feel weird without it."
Connor's mum watched him for a second, "They sound good for you."
Kevin nodded, "They are. They are both amazing and so different from my birth parents. They are actually accepting and supporting, non-judgmental and keep things so off kilter that I never know what the next day is going to bring."
A comfortable silence settled over the table, Connor reached for another slice.
"So..." He looked up, "Are they strict?"
Kevin thought about it, "Not really."
"No curfew?"
"I have one."
"No phone checks?"
"No."
"So what's the catch?"
Kevin smiled to himself, "They just..care. They’re there for me at every possible turn and "
Connor raised an eyebrow, "That's it?"
"They trust me." He took a drink before continuing, "If they say they'll be somewhere, they're there. If they promise something, they do it. If I have a bad day...they somehow always know."
Connor's mum rested her elbows lightly on the table, "They sound like good parents."
Kevin answered without thinking, "They really are."
The words slipped out as naturally as breathing.
"My dads have been..."
He stopped, everything stopped for just a moment and Kevin blinked, his stomach dropped somewhere into his shoes.
"...I..."
Heat flooded his face, and Connor looked up from his pizza. His mum simply watched him with patient eyes. Kevin rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly finding the tabletop fascinating.
"I mean..." He let out an awkward little laugh, "They're not..."
His voice got quieter.
"...they're not actually my dads."
Nobody rushed to fill the silence and nobody corrected him. Connor simply took another bite of pizza.
His mum smiled warmly, "We know what you meant."
Kevin swallowed, "I didn't even think."
"No," she said gently, "I don't believe you did."
He stared down at his paper plate, "I guess..." He shook his head, "It just came out."
Connor finally spoke, "I mean...they kind of are."
Kevin frowned, "What?"
Connor shrugged, "They're the ones who make sure you're okay. They worry about you. They drive you everywhere but they also are making sure that you are learning as well. They embarrass you. They probably tell you to text when you get somewhere."
Kevin laughed despite himself, "...Every single time."
Connor pointed his slice of pizza toward him, "See?"
Connor's mum smiled, "Family isn't always about whose name is on a birth certificate."
Kevin felt his throat tighten.
"Sometimes..." She folded her hands together on the table, "...it's about who shows up."
Kevin thought about Miles sitting in hospital waiting rooms, about Carter refusing to let him face a nightmare alone. About movie nights stretched across the couch and his mountains of homework at the kitchen table. Miles pretending not to laugh at Carter's ridiculous jokes and Carter somehow making him laugh even on the days he didn't think he could.
Neither of them had ever asked him to call them anything. They never expected it or even hinted at it.
They'd just...Loved him, despite everything.
Connor reached over and stole another slice from Kevin's plate, "So."
Kevin looked up, "Which one is the embarrassing dad?"
Kevin laughed, shaking his head, "Oh, that's Carter."
"And Miles?"
Kevin smiled into his soda, "...Miles just pretends he isn't."
Connor grinned, "So they're both embarrassing."
"Oh..." Kevin smirked, "...Absolutely."
